    I wish you were my professor. Thanks for giving me the understanding of what is a cultural anthropology. I had hard time deciding which anthropology class I wanted to take for my next semester in college. Now, I know I want to take cultural anthropology. My goal is to get a degree in geography.

    I was planning to enroll between SOC or ANTH for the summer, and I came across your video to search what is anthropology about. This short video made me quite intrigued to learn more!

    I've already applied and accepted to do my university degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, but today I really stopped and thought to myself; if I couldn't teach English to travel, what would I be interested in? That's when I found out about Cultural anthropology, and I feel like I'm being seduced over to the dark side haha
    This video was amazing, thank you for making it!

    can anyone tell me what's the difference and similarities of the concept of anthropologist and sociologist in CULTURE
    and in SOCIETY pls. i would really appreciate it.

    • @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
      @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology  4 роки тому +5

      The funny answer is that they are not really all that different. I would say that anthropology is more broad as a discipline, and more global in its reach. A sociologist tends to focus on the culture that they live in. These are broad generalizations though, and of course anthropology is much cooler.

    The work of Sahlins, Douglas, Mintz and the like skew the idea all cultural anthropologist are interested in living people doesn't it? My favorite definition was always " the study of anything that currently had, once had, or could have anything to do with humanity." Through methodologies Anthropologists can study just about anything.

    • @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
      @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology  2 роки тому +1

      I'm not going to give all those loser cultural anthropologists access to my precious archaeological resources! In other news, I saw Sidney Mintz give a talk when he was in his 90's. He looked like a doddering old man and I thought it was going to be a train wreck, but he was still super sharp and his talk kicked ass.

    • @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
      @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology  4 роки тому +7

      I went to UC Santa Barbara (BA), then Cal State Northridge (MA), and finally UC Riverside (PhD). Lots of colleges will work for you, just don't spend too much! In high school, good grades are the best thing. Try to do well in English to get your writing skills up. You don't have to worry about anthropology classes until college. If you have an opportunity as a senior to take a college class in anthro, that might be worth it. Keep on going!

    What are the job opportunities in this field

    • @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
      @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology  3 роки тому +2

      That is a very involved question. Here's a very short answer - Beyond working in academia, you can work for private companies (as an anthropologist - rare but it does exist!), government agencies, world health/culture groups (and similar). I also know people who used it as a stepping stone to law school. It is also a major that sounds cool, which matters. The American Association of Anthropology (AAA) has lists of job possibilities on their website if you are curious.

    How is this any different from a sociologist or a social-psychologist doing ethnographic fieldwork? I guess I just missed the point there.

    • @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology
      @KinkellaTeachesArchaeology  4 роки тому +6

      Anthropologists have the corner on the market of fieldwork more than the others. Sociologists just ain't the same. Plus, saying you are an "anthropology" major is about a thousand times cooler than saying you are a "sociology" major.
