I was just given a 2014 V Star 250 (technically I paid $10 for it). It's in pretty rough shape but it runs well. I don't even know where the sight glass is. It came with a tool kit so I should be fine there. Thanks for the video.
Well the o-ring sealed so good for atleast one more use. As far as bolts, if they had been rounded off in a way where it was difficult to get a tool to grab them then I probably would have, but since I was able to tap another size in and it fit tight with no chance of slipping then might as well reuse them. I sold the bike to a girl locally and she’s put a few thousand trouble free miles on it since then.
Thanks for the video. I have a couple of questions. What center stand did you use for your bike? Can you send the link? Is it a universal bike stand? What were you looking at to see the oil level? When wiping any excess oil do you just use a rang or do you also use some kind of chemical? I started riding this year and I'm completely new to doing my own bike maintenance. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
@ as long as when the bike is standing vertically straight you can see oil in the window you are good. Ideally right in the center, over filling can be as damaging as not having enough
Thanks Bro will be changing mine today,my FRAM oil filter #CH6004 came with 2 sizes of seals for filter housing ? Also a seal for oil filer cap?? This is in Toronto, anyways am going riding tommorrow and want to be pepared, Thanks aggain for video,I am riding a 2016 V-star 250 It has2,000 miles on odometer oil has never been changed? I am new owner!
Amazing how people will screw up a simple oil change. The allen key holes stripped, the o-ring pinched, too much oil! I just changed my oil on my 2013 Yamaha Super Tenere. Had the dealer do all full services B4. I just changed oil&filter at 20k miles. Looking at buying a V-star 250 for around town. Seems like a cool bike. I'd buy a few of the o-rings from the start, and replace one each time. Can't be very expensive. My dealer wanted $13 for a spec crush washer!! I showed the parts department the flat aluminum washer that their mechanics had used B4. It was $2 with tax...👍😺
Great machine for running around town on. And always service a new to you purchase, no telling what could be wrong. My atv had 2 extra quarts of engine oil and the rear diff oil was filled full when only .3 quarts was needed, was blowing oil past the seal all over the wheels lol
Hey, i have a 2008 V Star 250 and in the manual it says to use Yamalube 4 10W30 OR Yamalube 4 20W40, SAE 10W30 or SAE 20W40. Is there a difference in those to the one you are using? Thank you.
The weight is the only difference. I used mobil1 4T which is there motorcycle specific oil and it is sold in 10-40 only. The most important thing is you use a motorcycle specific oil and not car oil. Car oil isn’t designed for use in things that have a wet clutch which these motorcycles have.
@@DirtRider22a To bad it's exactly what I have been looking for . I want one that attaches to the forks not the handle bars . I have a 2019 and love this motorcycle .
Good stuff bro. I just changed the oil on my Suzuki DRZ400 and for the first time ever I finally replaced the crush washer with a new one. I always reused them also. Seems to not be an issue whatsoever. Btw, I HATE Allen (hex) bolts/wrenches. Hate them with a passion. Always an issue with those! 🤬
I would have to re watch the video to refresh my memory but I believe the reason I had to tap the Allen key in was because they were already damaged from a PO not because I didn’t have the right size (as a machinist I have a plethora of tools and plenty of metric and SAE Allen keys, even JIS bits). But that’s pretty common on used bikes and atv’s unfortunately.
Allen bolts are a million times better than the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screws that they use on most Japanese bikes, which everybody mistake for Phillips screws. Allen and Torx screws are by far the best way to go. Use the right wrench, and they don't strip out like JIS/Phillips screws do. Harley uses only Allen and Torx screws, and I have NEVER stripped one.
Drain plug: 17mm, 25lbft.
Screws on filter cover: 5mm, 7.4lbft.
1.4qt 10W40 (or 1.6qt with new oil filter)
K&N Filter element KN-145
Taking my motorcycle saftey course tomorrow. To get my license. Have a 2009 vstar so glad i found ur video
Good luck!!! And glad you liked the video
Update. Got my license today
That’s awesome, stay safe out there

Why would you not got buy new bolts and O ring?

According to the owner manual, when changing the filter the quantity of oil is 1.6L
It also says to tighten the drain bolt to 25 foot pounds
Bought a 09 vstar. U wouldn't happen to know where I could get a owners manual

My bike stand is one from harbor freight, I always wipe oil off with a rag and then may wash with soap and water once the job is completely finished

Another great video. Thanks
Can I change the filter if it’s full of oil?
Possibly, not 100% sure. If you leaned it far towards the opposite side for sure could.

If you overfill it by what now?
Not sure I understand your question, are you asking what you should do if you over fill it?
take some out by draining it a little and tighten it up again. simple.
C#@t hair was the amount I believe!? 😃
And 2 years later I finally understand what he was asking hahaha

1.69 quarts with filter change.
