I appreciate you guys looking into this when other popular gaming outlets dismiss technical analysis altogether other than the shallow, "graphics comparison." Keep up the good content.
actually read patch notes of patch 1.09 rockstar says they just fixed ambient occlusion to match version 1.00 and originally removed it to help framerate
I hope R* can make moose, parakeet, rio grande turkey, california owl, and western pronghorn spawn rate higher, man those animals spawn rate is pretty shit 😆
I compared SDR to HDR on the Xbox One X and a Sony XF90. The HDR in this game is bad and I can't understand how anyone can recommend it. You loose lots of contrast and get that silver haze thing going on. White never looks white in HDR, no matter how you set it up. Switch back to normal mode and it's night and day. The artdesign uses a very specific bright red in the pause menu, cover and logo. in HDR it's dark compared. Interesting is that they build someting into the SDR picture that kind of emulates HDR. When inside cabins and light floods through the windows, the effect is stronger in SDR than HDR. Same goes for fireplaces, candles etc. Because of all that I think the graphics look better on SDR. No washed out colours, more contrast, more details. DF's video comparison has some kind of issue showing off SDR. It's not how the game looks live in front of you (no clowns makeup). I see that the art directors invested a ton into making this game with a very specific cinema level of colour grading and it looks as they just couldn't translate that vision into HDR afterwards. Instead of relying on some benchmark heatmap just look with your own eyes and take in what you really see.
gimme jokers man you gotta keep playing with your settings then because it’s so flat in SDR. I have a Sony x900e and while I have some black crush issues, the HDR looks better than the SDR.
Alex White I play with sdr on My TVs natural mode. For some reason, only with RDR2, the hdr looks horrid. There is little contrast, as compared to my TVs sdr Natural mode which has accurate colors (not the overblown ones seen here) with great black levels.
Just tested the HDR, going from SDR, and I like this fix a lot. I couldn't stand the fake HDR (or "cinematic" as they call it) before, but this new game HDR is a lot better. It has its own art to it, of which some people might prefer to stick with SDR which arguably has better colour saturation. But I feel the game HDR feels more realistic. There are some fine details that I didn't notice when using SDR before, which is down to the magic of HDR. Kudos to Rockstar for continuously improving the game. Next up, checkerboard fix?
I actually kind of get that. I was so eager and hyped for this game for the better part of a decade and now that it's out there (and it's so unbelievably masterfully made) it just kinda doesn't feel real. Like my brain hasn't fully caught up to it yet.

Thanks for the vid about AO, people were attacking me on my channel for insisting AO wasn't removed, it's density was just changed a bit in 1.07, i posted videos for proof and got attacked claiming i was wrong and AO had been removed even though it was present in every scene i tested. Now i can refer to this video in the future to shut people up.
@@Jambobist I even admitted the density of the AO had changed, i posted videos just to prove AO was still present, just slightly lighter. They just kept calling me a liar and blind, and that AO was definitely missing. I gave up replying to them.
Wait so the ambient occlusion was removed? I did not know that...interesting. Does it look that much worse than it did? Perhaps they should give us a choice. They already have both versions and giving us the option to play in SDR with AO or HDR without AO. I would love to have the option to overclock the Xbox One X and have both options! A man can wish right?! ;)
to be fair things changed over time with new patches it is during patch 1.03 and 1.05 or so where it looked completely off like missing shadows under the trains/trollies or inside stores/bar things looking more flat, did later patches fix it very likely esp the current newest one, but i do wish digital did compare it further past the intro and i dont have the game anymore to check myself
Sinn0100 nonono. People were saying it was removed from objects or downgraded, but this video proves they merely tweaked the AO with a patch and it was in fact largely for the better afterwards.
Thanks for looking into it, I love this game so much and knowing the HDR was so poorly implemented back on launch was kinda frustrating. It's really encouraging to know the devs still patching graphical improvements like these. And regarding the ambient occlusion, I figured the internet was crying g over imaginary spilled milk and that wasn't the case, glad you guys out the nail in the coffin of that nonsense.
*I really don't care about having a part of the picture being as bright as a flashlight..* The contrast is nice, if it achieves near true black, and a bright white, on the same screen. *My interest in HDR has always been WCG, wide color reference is the true star of the show, I don't see how its not showcased by everyone as the most important thing in HDR..*
The two work hand in hand. WCG is indeed often forgotten about. It is made more apparent and beautiful with the highest contrast ratios. The eye can perceive the colors more when they are not suppressed by a lower contrast ratio. But it is easier to measure in terms that the general consumer can immediately see measured by simple units, rather than DCIP coverage and stuff like that.. In the case of RDR2 though, your point is really proven. Rockstar capitalized on this general trend to avoid going in and doing the real work. I agree 100% that the biggest improvement I saw when I first used HDR was going to 10bpc.
I thought that for a while too when first swapping from sdr to hdr in any game or movie but looking back now, hdr looks more natural and less oversaturated. It looks more realistic imo in hdr. I get some people want more color which is all subjective and fine but hdr gives a very real feel to everything imo.
It depends on your tv..because in the previous digital foundry videos they prefer more natural color the way developers intended.. Maybe they are using oled tv..
What they did with HDR and additional ambiant occlusion effects is amazing, Rockstar did a really good job. I even have to give them a small credit on the checkerboard rendering effect since they improved it and the game look clearer and I'm able to see more details. Take this shot for exemple where you see a closeup of the protagonist at 16:44 I'm able to see more individual hairs on his head and on his fur coat, I'm also able to see more detail of the fabric on his winter coat and on his lether strap. Sadly, the stair stepping effect is still here, but the game is a bit clearer in the end.

Still in the midst of watching the video, but I have learned so much about technological and visual fidelity and concepts from another amazing Digital Foundry video. Even without an HDR television, it is fascinating seeing how Rockstar has managed to address their approach to HDR with current gaming consoles and their limitations. The ambient occlusion effect looks far better on the patch 1.09 version than the original game release.
HDR isn't much of a console "limitation", it's how it's done, which takes time, which is why some developers can pull off GREAT results and others just do basic stuff. As long as the hardware supports HDR metadata then that's the only real requirement.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the different technologies a factor into how HDR was done on the Xbox One X version vs the PS4 Pro version? A lot of people were discussing how the effects were arguably better on the Xbox One version compared to the PS4 version. If that isn't the case, how come Rockstar made the effect different on the two competing consoles?
Antoine Milien The HDR isn’t different. It’s exactly the same on all consoles that have HDR. As HDR doesn’t use more horse power to run. The difference between the consoles is when they talk about the resolution of the game. The Xbox One runs at under 900p, the PS4 runs at 1080p, the Xbox One X runs at Native 4K (2160p) while the PS4 Pro only runs at upscaled 4K, which doesn’t look as good.
I just can't help feeling that the "expected to get doubly blown away" level of expectation these days, when it comes to game graphics... It's so extreme. Talking about games in general these days, games can get some heavy flak for failing to have the "expected" level of colour and light, when they honestly still look pretty good. It's like our expectations to HDR and stuff get top priority and if the game fails a little on it, in comes the rage. Sometimes I think this whole subject gets blown out of proportions. I played RDR2 on a vanilla PS4 on a TV that did not support 4K or HDR for a long time, and I was stunned by the beauty of it. I have since switched to a PS4 Pro and a 4K TV with HDR, but I never thought "man, this game isn't quite pretty enough". Also, all these videos comparing PC, PS4 and XBOX - most of the time, I hardly see the difference. Oh, right, if a big fat arrow points to the difference then maybe yeah, there was an extra light source, or maybe the texture in that wooden wall is a bit sharper, maybe...
I noticed that too. I play RDR2 on just an SDR display myself and it doesn't look like this. Perhaps somehting went wrong when they encoded the SDR footage within the HDR container of this video.
Yeah at 5:35 it basically looks like a poorly calibrated image, like the characters senselessly appear sunburned. Yet then around 6:00 they suggested that cinematic, the more correct looking mode, was “fixed.” Also, it’s personal preference, but I would not increase the brightness slider past the capabilities of my TV, as this oled owner did. Creates a less faithful image, I would think
The thing that you are missing between 1.00 and even 1.09, they turned off a lot of lights at night in cities like Saint-Denis and Valentine. I did a comparaison with my friend who is running at 1.00, and there is a big difference at night.
@@JabPlayz-Gaming For consoles it makes a difference when reinstalling games. You can always go back to v1.00 with a disk; but digital always installs with the latest patches and there's no going back. So for RDR2; some of the more fun single player gliches only exist before v1.05; meaning; digital will never be able to do them unless they never updated their game. If the next gen of console lets me delete patches separate from the game file then I'd be fine with that. Thus only the patches (a few GB) would be much easier to reinstall than the entire game again just to go back to v1.00. Or even better, the ability to delete individual patches! Also constant internet connection required to validate digital games from both server and client sides. If one fails, then you can't play the game. The disk always has the license encrypted to it, so you can always play it.
I've found, recently moving to an OLED for my gaming PC, that just bumping digital vibrance in nvidia control panel to like 55 or 60% brings back that saturation and keeps the beautiful bright highlights.
I'm happy about the AO and the HDR boost but the CBR still being shit still is making me wait to play this on next gen consoles or wait for another patch. The game just looks way too soft and it looks downright blurry next to the 4k XB1X.
Get the PS4 Pro if you can find it for cheaper. I own both the pro and the Xbox One X and I wasted $300 on the Xbox One X because dumbfucks kept telling me there is a huge difference between the two yet they're nearly identical on my 55" 4K TV which is a TCL 6 series which is a true native 4k 12 bit panel and has FALD and wide color gamut. The difference is so small you have to put them side by side and stare at the details for minutes to see any difference. Xbox fanboys lie too damn much.
@@anthonyj810 , if you can't see a difference between native 4K and 1440p you're the dumbest guy on youtube. Games like Dirt 2 are 1080p on "not so pro" and 4K on X1X but let me guess no difference right? Lol
Man, I dunno... That color desat is real as hell. It totally drains the game of all of its life, and I am watching in HDR myself here... I suppose if you do as Adam said, and adjust the panel itself to saturate the colors more, it could do the trick... But wow does that stock effect take the wind out of the image.
@@halofreak1990 it typically isn't... In sloppy applications, or in cases like this where things were developed with sdr in mind first and foremost, then hdr is cooked up real fast at the end, it certainly can be. A lot of hdr content looks incredible though, it itself is certainly not a bad thing.
I love HDR but this implementation of it is horrific! and for a AAA game that's simply unacceptable. SDR looks like what you'd expect the HDR to look like, what a fuck up. Turn it off and enjoy a rich and vibrant, beautiful game.
I just tried it out and still think that the SDR mode looks better. HDR Game Mode still has this grayish haze over everything, probably the 10% raising of the black levels. While I like how the sky and highlights look in HDR, everything else is lacking contrast and overall it looks worse than SDR.
After all this time and still everything looked blurry until last night when I accidentally found the setting. Ignore what DF or anyone else says. If you want to get rid of the blurry picture on PS4 1000 and 200 paper white are setting. After that go in your tv setting and turn on on high black enhancement and contrast enhancer. Blurry picture should be gone and you can enjoy the game.
i was confuse at the color hue at first but i can say now that the HDR color tone (in game mode) is more acurate than the saturate SDR since just by looking the metal engraving on guns there is a clear difference between Brass and Gold whille in SDR the gold was just slight more "yellow"
@ absolutely you can catch some nice sun rises/sets over the Dakota river. Just finished my second playthrough and still find the game as immersive as the day I bought it. I just keep finding new ways to role play. Of course I know the mechanics like the back of my hand so I can kind of see past oz's curtain so to speak. The A.I from a combat standpoint is still pretty bad but it helps if you know the places in which to start fights in the open world. Nothing like bounty hunters converging in on you as your fighting a gang at say hanging dog ranch. Gives you that holy shit I'm just a speck of dust in a massive world feel that feels next gen.

Out of all of them if I had to choose without a lengthy explanation of which one I think is best I guess I would say Rdr2 because I have spent the most time playing it of the three. AC origins/odyssey was also good albeit derivative of the witcher 3 but those games probably have the best HDR implementations for an open world I have seen

Wait, raising colour saturation on my display may solve the lack of saturation in "game HDR"? It still sounds weird to me, I prefer to have the original authentic colours of the game and play in SDR.
It's great that you revisit RDR2 after this patch and honestly, I didn't think they were going to fix it. But you still haven't made the promised final analysis of Nier Automata on XB1 and I can't decide which version to get.
The X version is sharper but for me the Pro version was a little smoother. Bother base versions looks and run like shit. If you buy games physically there is sadly no physical copy for the Xbox but there is for PS4. Both versions are great but I say get it for the X since it’s a bit sharper but if your a collector and want the game physically the Pro versions is also pretty good and in my experience slightly smoother. Hope we'll see an update to this video after the latest patch to the game. I'd particularly like to see what kind of difference HDR10+ makes, though idk how hard that would be to get across in a youtube video. I currently use an LG OLED as a monitor, so no HDR10+. But, I have a Samsung QD-OLED in the living room that does support it, and I'm curious if it's worth lugging the PC in there.
HDR looks great on every one of my X enhanced games except for RDR2, even after this new update, it's *slightly* better but still has a washed out look when I've switched it between both "cinema" & "game" HDR settings.
I can give you a bit of a rundown as i just played Just cause 4 post patch on Xbox one X last night. Overall the game seems to have less pop in but it still has shadow flickering . Especially on guard railings for some reason. Water is still atrocious as well. I really can't see why they keep doing these massive patches but don't fix the elephant in the room which is the terrible water rendering which brings down the entire presentation along with the horrible Anti Aliasing method used which results in too many jaggies still. It's not a horrible looking game aside from that but surely after all these patches a decent AA solution should be present on at least the Xbox one X as far as consoles go. I guess at least it is on Gamepass on Xbox one X but that still means you need to purchase any season pass content if you want it and it is just too expensive for this title to bother.
Shame they couldn't fix the checkerboard rendering. You'd think with a game like this and a studio like this, their implementation would be some of the best out there.
I don't think the matter is they "can't" do it , i mean they pulled off native 4k on OneX with solid 30fps , the issue could be that the Pro couldn't give a stable performance with full checkerboard
Given the strong sony '4k hdr' marketing on the ps4 pro, Its a real shame R* have done this. Nice the hdr is 'fixed' now I wish they would just allow for a drop in overall pixel density and give us the option of the additional horizontal resolution @ 2160x1440p
Thanks for doing this video! Been curious about the AO "downgrades" people were talking about. It's strange that an HDR update came so long after launch. I wish it came out back when I was playing it but oh well. Also, you should do a video on the new Just Cause 4 update!
If it's any consolation, I usually prefer the colors and uniformity of my 1080p Plasma over my 4K. For current gen, at least. I don't have an OLED, though.
There is no wide color gamut and that picture is still 8 bit in a 10 bit container....You can tell by looking at the menus that they didn't do anything besides add more compensation for this defect
Been trying it out on my OLED. Meh. There are definite improvements to the HDR using the game option but still a lot of remaining issues. On the positive side there is actually peak brightness and it’s definitely noticeable. Unfortunately the blacks are fall short of true black and appear gray and the image still lacks the vibrancy of the SDR version. Hello HDR offers 1 billion colours instead of 16 million and the ability at least on an OLED to have black be black. Why are the blacks not black and does the version with more colours have less colour in it. You’re telling me it took Rockstar one of the biggest names in the business 9 months to patch in HDR and only to still fail in the implimentation of two of the three main benefits? Come on...
Sam Lloyd-Gale I know HDR colours can appear dimmer despite there being more colours. HDR is not about just saturating all the colours and making reds even more red. It’s about seeing more shades of red even if they are not as deep. What I mean when I say it lacks vibrancy is that the picture still looks like it has a filter limiting the colour range rather than offering the full pallete with more subtle changes. The deepest part of a deep red should still appear just as red due even if the reds as a whole appear less red due there being more shades of red where the SDR is forced to use the deep red for a bigger portion of the reds.
It's so sad that a company as big as rockstar hasn't implamented a top of the range hdr setting for this game. I don't even play this game in 4k it looks alot better in 1080p and I don't mean graphics I mean the colour saturation, which is a real shame as I have a high end oled TV and the hdr looks terrible even with this patch. And before people whine I play on xbox one x and ps4 pro and I'm not convinced with this hdr patch. Just one man's opinion. Rockstar have the budget this should be a masterpiece in every way which in most cases it is but the hdr.....its bad there is no justification, trying to convince yourself its just bad.
That's the fact, how much RS* tries to implement HDR into the game, the problem lies in that the game has been created on a SDR basis, so the game can never be true HDR, just simulated HDR. Unlike Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, uncharted 4 etc. I have a pretty capable HDR TV (Samsung Q6FN) and I use SDR with this game, because HDR is just not good with this game, it's dim, unsaturated, and really hard to get the game at a correct black level. Therfore I suggest, leave it in SDR and be done with it, you will thank me later.
@Elijah Israel You can disagree all you want, but the fact remains that the game was not made with HDR in mind. Vincent from HDTV test has proven this. The HDR in RDR2 is a SDR basis with a fake HDR container.
Given the strong sony '4k hdr' marketing on the ps4 pro, Its a real shame R* have done this. Nice the hdr is 'fixed' now I wish they would just allow for a drop in overall pixel density and give us the option of the additional horizontal resolution @ 2160x1440p
Am I the only one that doesn't like how SDR looks here? Way too colourful, and it doesn't suit this game in my opinion. It's a realistic game and I definitely prefer the HDR look over that. On my C9 it doesn't look that crazy colorful either.
I finished the game 2 weeks ago and i visited every location available in the game and trust me this is the best looking game ever made so far 💯💯 i doesn't matter if the hdr disable ir not it will blow your mind your mind 🤩💯

Cinema / Movie mode + standard sharpness value + a bit more in game brightness looks great for SDR. The SDR in this video doesn't look like its calibrated.
Disappointed R* could do nothing about that terrible PS4 Pro resolution.. A nice, square 1600p or even 1440p resolution would have been better than that weird, rectangular 2k by 2k approach. Oh well.
Great video yet again. I however will still play in sdr, as mentioned in the video, rockstar graded this game in sdr with hdr 'in mind' that's why we got the hdr we got day one, hdr really looks out of place in this game even with the peak white being unlocked. I have the new Samsung q90r that's calibrated, so no dynamic contrast and all that crappy postproccessing. That being said the logo goes full white at 1000 even though the my TV can get way brighter. Just a quick FYI, days gone was graded for both sdr and hdr. They were promoting hdr for it 2 years ago already and the end result looks amazing, great color, highlights, contrast and all this without dimming the entire picture. Highly recommend days gone for hdr and as a game in general. Here's hoping when the next gen of consoles come out there will be a standard for hdr because right now it's hit or miss especially for static meta data. A hybrid log gamma would be nice for games.
I played this on a 4k monitor at launch and it looked amazing to me. I had to double check if I had HDR or not (I don't) b/c the lighting was amazing in SDR
Most shadows under objects (indoor , store) are still missing in Patch 1.09 compared to the version on the disc. I checked this today. Ambient occlusion is back in V.1.09 BUT it's an "ambient occlusion light". Feel free to prove me wrong here. Go into a store, check for shadows under objects on the shelves. V.1.0 vs V.1.09 there is a huge difference in the shadowing! Outdoors (daytime) the game looks pretty much the same regardless of the version.
Shadows under objects is ambient occlusion. Several screenshots have been taken to compare 1.00 and 1.09 and they are both quite identical. Ambient occlusion is the formation of shadows if nonliving things
@@AdityaSathya "quite identical" is pretty subjective isn't it? Quite identical yet totally different. I'm not making this shit up for fun. Ambient occlusion is a shading and rendering technique used to calculate how exposed each point in a scene is to ambient lighting. So, The lighting, it's distance and it's positioning affects all shadows. Not just those under objects per se.. or those of nonliving things, It affects basically everything.
First they deny the whole thing, Calls it a conspiracy theory.. Badmouths everyone who dares to ask questions about the graphics after the "day one patch".. What a bunch of dumbasses =) =)
I finished the game in the month it got released on the xbox one X with a 4k led 55inch. I think i will play it again with the proper HDR and all the patches on my new 65 LG oled. Cant wait to check it out again 👀👍🏻
HDR colors look better in terms of accuracy. I personally prefer an accurate image to an over saturated image. In fact you can easily over saturated colors in HDR to compensate by cranking up the color on your TV. But I'm somewhat of an image quality snob, so I go for accurate not oversaturation.
Guys, make sure your hdmi port is the hdr compatible one, I’ve had my tv for 4 months and never could get hdr to look right till I started trying out the different ports till I found the hdr compatible one, try that out. Hdr actually looks good now
RDR2 is my favorite game of all time but no doubt about it the HDR is completely broken, still even after the patch.. I just bought a beautiful 65” Samsung QLED and I’m playing the game on the Xbox Series X the HDR is so horrifically bad I have to turn it completely off and play it in SDR it looks so much better! The horrible HDR really shows on this TV wow!! I’m happy that I can still enjoy the beauty of this game in SDR. Little less sharp with a little blur in SDR but nothing major..
@@yeehawww5345 if you have Xbox go to settings, TV & display options, video modes, and uncheck the HDR box. You can mess with all your settings there. Hope this helps
Weird. The checkerboarding method they’re using on the Pro is known to wash out the image but it also really seems to screw with the colours. I set my pro to 1080p using the same HDR settings and colour pallette looks miles better.
It's normal... You need to setup correctly or else it looks like shit. But the settings will depend on your TV. After this update HDR is so much better than SDR.
I'm sure that 4K HDR looks great but honestly I just customized the settings of my 1080p TV, and it still looks amazing. The softness is always all the way down, and it gets as close to anti-aliasing as I can get tbh.
8 mins in and you've only had one side-by-side, DONT tell me-Show me. been watching your vids since ps2 days and this one confused me SDR/ Cinematic/Game/ HDR? mode. So having SDR(hdr disabled) has the best visuals. Need better labeling
I love how Rockstar doesn't specifically say that the HDR has been "fixed," which is admitting that there was a problem in the first place. Instead, they're just adding a "game" mode, which is what it should have been at launch, and calling the original broken mode "cinematic." Geniuses!
I've seen comments that parallax occlusion mapping is now misssing in areas. In particular tiles on roofs. I can't roll back the patch to compare, but theres no POM on roofs in my 1.09 patched copy.
The trick for best HDR picture is to enable game mode on TV settings and tweak a lot of it to get perfect colors. The standardised TV mode on HDR is washed out, you must tweak the game mode of the TV settings to achieve stunning clear picture definition with perfect black and white and true colors.
Rockstar is such a big company i cant believe they fucked up the resolution on the ps4. Till this day the graphics are blurry as fuck. I have both xbox one x and ps4 pro and the difference when you have it in front of you are insane. I cant believe they havent fix this and the HDR as well.
Any clue as to why the fps seems smoother on videos like this then on my ps5 right now? Should I change any tv settings or something? It stutters a lot here and at 6:35 for example it looks very smooth
Here's hoping UA-cam allows for 60fps on resolutions below 720p for all videos, cus that would be a god-send given my slower wifi not being able to handle 720p60, but it can handle 480p60.
You know what looks better than "HDR"?: The first time i saw a UA-cam video through a consumer-grade C.R.T (not even a P.V.M), of a 720p source downscaled to 576i... How: The cable-box of the service which provides me T.V, Internet and Telephone has one SCART output, and the UA-cam app. When i saw one of D.F's coverage of Forza Motorsport 7 (which is HDR-implemented) it blew my mind: The contrast is beyond any "Modern" set i've come across. You'll never see true, powerful RED unless you experience it (a good 'RED TEST' is the Classic Game Room's intro). Not to mention that 60 fps on a C.R.T is blur-free, so you can go 120 Hz; 240 Hz; or even 9000 - - it won't matter - - Digital/processed pixels will always be a Sin compared to the pure Light of analogue. The only obvious set-back is resolution, but even then there's 1080i and 1080p C.R.T's...! But what do i know, right? I'm the village's OL'-FooL, or maybe i always saw the Light, since i'm PAL?
There are a ton of fake hdr displays. If it's not a 10/12 bit panel tv, you're wasting your time. On my KS8000, looks absolutely beautiful with the new patch.
Honestly the game looks so much better without HDR on, it’s brighter, much more vibrant, and the blacks are deeper. HDR looks washed out with the blacks looking blueish.
I wonder what is the reasoning behind cinematic mode. Was the color and light crush intentional? Do people at R* have some sort of weird HDR tv with weird tone mapping?
Best setting is. Go to settings in xbox one x. Go to video modes and turn on hdr then start the game and now within the game go to settings again in xbox one x and turn off hdr but you will still retain HDR settings but without all the pale and dull look. Give it a try is night and day difference.

9:20 HDR BETTER

*I really don't care about having a part of the picture being as bright as a flashlight..*
The contrast is nice, if it achieves near true black, and a bright white, on the same screen.
Both are equally important imo.. Both in conjunction is required for peak realism.
The peak brightness is required to achieve wcg anyways..
Exactly
I agree deep color is a big deal
Properly done HDR on good screen is not bright as a flashlight, except when you stare at the sun just like in real life.
Many viewers asked for this, thank you very much for the service!
It still looks too dark and lifeless in HDR. I still prefer the vibrancy of the normal mode.
I thought that for a while too when first swapping from sdr to hdr in any game or movie but looking back now, hdr looks more natural and less oversaturated. It looks more realistic imo in hdr. I get some people want more color which is all subjective and fine but hdr gives a very real feel to everything imo.

All the HDR scenes look like there’s a coat of white mist over the whole screen. Lacks depth contrast and saturation.

Antoine Milien
The HDR isn’t different.
@@spookylemon4947 Didn't know it was more focused on the resolution. I learned something new.

It’s cool. It’s all a bit jarring when you first learn about it. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing when I first bought my 4K TV.

@@JabPlayz-Gaming
For consoles it makes a difference when reinstalling games.

Great video like always. Are you guys going to do an analysis of the new Just Cause 4 patch?
I guess not. It doesn't seem like many people still play it.
I don't think the matter is they "can't" do it , i mean they pulled off native 4k on OneX with solid 30fps , the issue could be that the Pro couldn't give a stable performance with full checkerboard
ps4 pro is too weak lol
At 4.2 TFLOP, that puts Ps4pro below a RX570 in performance, as the other dude said, any other implementation would also add atifacts, or drop frames.
Given the strong sony '4k hdr' marketing on the ps4 pro, Its a real shame R* have done this. Nice the hdr is 'fixed' now I wish they would just allow for a drop in overall pixel density and give us the option of the additional horizontal resolution @ 2160x1440p

Here I am with my 1080p non-HDR TV in 2019 missing out on the good stuff. Dang.
Matt768 HDR is trash in General watch Quantum TV he explains it all
It’s seems like everyone wants to believe that HDR in rdr2 doing his job while SDR still look better

Sorry u dont have a hdr tv
The HDR in RDR2 is a SDR basis with a fake HDR container.

it may sound weird but I love how green the grass is
in sdr. I think I may stay with sdr.
I agree
Any game I prefer brighter colours
Am I the only one that doesn't like how SDR looks here? Way too colourful, and it doesn't suit this game in my opinion. It's a realistic game and I definitely prefer the HDR look over that. On my C9 it doesn't look that crazy colorful either.
+1
watched it in HDR, still ,from the comparison shots we have seen , the color of SDR is still more vivid than the game mode in terms of colorfulness .
Thanks so much for making this video ❤️!
I finished the game 2 weeks ago and i visited every location available in the game and trust me this is the best looking game ever made so far 💯💯 i doesn't matter if the hdr disable ir not it will blow your mind your mind 🤩💯
2 weeks ago? Took you that long?
@@H.E.M. i always wait for sell and it not easy to 100% completion in red dead redemption 2
@@H.E.M. maybe he finished the game even more than 100%. There is many thing that didn't counted as 100% completion, such as find every interest points, study + kill + skin every animals, catch every fish with recommended bait, and more
@@louniis great, took 5 months to finished the game a 100% and more
@jvalex18 I absolutely disagree. I own a pc, a ps4 and a One X. There is no game that looks as good as this game on the One X. Especially not on pc. The only games that are arguably on a similar level are God Of War and Uncharted 4 (both not on pc).
Yeah on Xbox One X in real 4K looks so amazing
Most shadows under objects (indoor , store) are still missing in Patch 1.09 compared to the version on the disc. I checked this today.
Ambient occlusion is back in V.1.09 BUT it's an "ambient occlusion light".
Feel free to prove me wrong here. Go into a store, check for shadows under objects on the shelves. V.1.0 vs V.1.09 there is a huge difference in the shadowing!
Outdoors (daytime) the game looks pretty much the same regardless of the version.
Yeah, appears me that too,Wich plataform do u play? I'm on the Xbox one X,seems the thextures are a little worse than before, what about your game?
This game is still blowing people's minds with its craftsmanship
Until you actually play it
@@josephaziz4971 what's that supposed to mean
I finished the game in the month it got released on the xbox one X with a 4k led 55inch. I think i will play it again with the proper HDR and all the patches on my new 65 LG oled. Cant wait to check it out again 👀👍🏻
I thought it was just me. The HDR looked dimmed
Its razer sharp on that xboxone x with that native 4k.
This is about fixing the hdr not resolution
Guys, make sure your hdmi port is the hdr compatible one, I’ve had my tv for 4 months and never could get hdr to look right till I started trying out the different ports till I found the hdr compatible one, try that out. Hdr actually looks good now
They should also talk about color banding in almost every game that has hdr
RDR2 is my favorite game of all time but no doubt about it the HDR is completely broken, still even after the patch.. I just bought a beautiful 65” Samsung QLED and I’m playing the game on the Xbox Series X the HDR is so horrifically bad I have to turn it completely off and play it in SDR it looks so much better! The horrible HDR really shows on this TV wow!! I’m happy that I can still enjoy the beauty of this game in SDR. Little less sharp with a little blur in SDR but nothing major..
how do you turn on sdr instead of hdr
@@yeehawww5345 if you have Xbox go to settings, TV & display options, video modes, and uncheck the HDR box. You can mess with all your settings there. Hope this helps
@@KBTheHun do i allow the YCC thing?
@@yeehawww5345 I unchecked that too
@@KBTheHun so it should be sdr now?
Ha I was looking for an excuse to play through this game again. So glad they finally fixed the HDR.
Excuse? Played this game twice and going 3. The story and gameplay is fucking amazing.

Same 😎
Weird. The checkerboarding method they’re using on the Pro is known to wash out the image but it also really seems to screw with the colours. I set my pro to 1080p using the same HDR settings and colour pallette looks miles better.
When I turned my hdr back on after the update I seen no difference. The hdr still sucks
Exactly, game still looks better in SDR.
Thanks for the information DF!
14:01 why is the horse on the "patched" red?
It's over saturated
@@rajamb732 no its a different horse because the brown one died
I have a 2018 Samsung QLED TV and I am very happy with the HDR performance, it has a peak brightness of 1500 nits and very good black levels. 😁
Paul-Ove Eidem what nits number did you use for this game now after the patch for your Samsung?
What settings did you use on red dead
About time they patched the hdr settings been waiting on this since Launch!!! Holy F.
JayDope me as well now I can do a second play through
The trick for best HDR picture is to enable game mode on TV settings and tweak a lot of it to get perfect colors. The standardised TV mode on HDR is washed out, you must tweak the game mode of the TV settings to achieve stunning clear picture definition with perfect black and white and true colors.
U guys should do a Video about recommended tv settings for qled TVs
Rockstar is such a big company i cant believe they fucked up the resolution on the ps4. Till this day the graphics are blurry as fuck. I have both xbox one x and ps4 pro and the difference when you have it in front of you are insane. I cant believe they havent fix this and the HDR as well.
Excellent vid DF, absolutely amazing game, great to see the devs focused on Console.
Any clue as to why the fps seems smoother on videos like this then on my ps5 right now? Should I change any tv settings or something? It stutters a lot here and at 6:35 for example it looks very smooth
It’s the PC version
You guys are great. Thanks for the video. SDR still looks the best.
Thank you for doing this.
This game looks so damn gorgeous in Xone X
Here's hoping UA-cam allows for 60fps on resolutions below 720p for all videos, cus that would be a god-send given my slower wifi not being able to handle 720p60, but it can handle 480p60.
*title [4k HDR]*
*UA-cam proceeds to render in 1080p only*
You know what looks better than "HDR"?: The first time i saw a UA-cam video through a consumer-grade C.R.T (not even a P.V.M), of a 720p source downscaled to 576i...
Not to mention that 60 fps on a C.R.T is blur-free, so you can go 120 Hz; 240 Hz; or even 9000 - - it won't matter - -
Digital/processed pixels will always be a Sin compared to the pure Light of analogue.
The only obvious set-back is resolution, but even then there's 1080i and 1080p C.R.T's...!
But what do i know, right? I'm the village's OL'-FooL, or maybe i always saw the Light, since i'm PAL?
loving and still playing red ded redemption 2 story single player mode..
dead online second job mode has better luck cash grabbing a hobo
great video! It might be time for a second playthrough with good HDR. loved this game, but was pretty disappointed with how crap the HDR was

There are a ton of fake hdr displays. If it's not a 10/12 bit panel tv, you're wasting your time. On my KS8000, looks absolutely beautiful with the new patch.
Got the same TV looks amazing 😎
What settings you put on?got same TV ks8000
paper white to 140 gives it a realistic look
What about the draw distance? The draw distance looks allot worse since my first playthrough!
It looks exactly the same mate 😂
@@rajamb732 it's not the same. You see a lot more pop in now compared to 1.00
It’s still a blurry mess on PS4 Pro and I have the digital version.
Honestly the game looks so much better without HDR on, it’s brighter, much more vibrant, and the blacks are deeper. HDR looks washed out with the blacks looking blueish.
To mutch Halo rings when HDR is turned on. It annoys me more then how realisticly the colors look.
You must have a shit tier TV because I see no halo rings anywhere I look
I wonder what is the reasoning behind cinematic mode. Was the color and light crush intentional? Do people at R* have some sort of weird HDR tv with weird tone mapping?
HDR or not, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a beautiful game. So detailed.
Best setting is. Go to settings in xbox one x. Go to video modes and turn on hdr then start the game and now within the game go to settings again in xbox one x and turn off hdr but you will still retain HDR settings but without all the pale and dull look. Give it a try is night and day difference.
