      Yeah - Wow!!
      The word that came into mind while listening to these performances was 'mature'. He's beyond the point of feeling the need to try to show off, he just plays them as the musical poems that they are. When he brings out an inner voice, it's done with enough restraint that it doesn't call unnecessary attention to itself; it still sounds like a natural part of the musical fabric. Even the transitions between pieces are done thoughtfully and with a natural sense of flow.
      This joins the late-40s Rudolf Serkin Library of Congress performance as one of the great live versions of Opus 25 on record!

    This is the latest recording I know of, of Lewenthal. While still generally superb, it's somewhat world-weary and hard in spots. It's too bad he never came out with any commercial recordings after 1975, he lived another thirteen years. He did have a contract with Angel Records to record "six discs of unusual interest", but only two were released.
