Great job with the run, Dan! One version of my story: I started running in high school with a friend who was considering joining the military and wanted to get into better shape (Spoiler: He didn't join.) and we ran a local 10k on a whim a few months into it. Skipping over a few decades, by the start of the 2000s I'd run out of running buddies and tried some other sports looking for social experiences, but always seemed to end up cycling or whatever by myself. In 2015, I saw the London Marathon live on the NBC Olympic Channel (RIP) with three consecutive world record holders--Kipsang, Kimetto, and Kipchoge--blazing through the streets side by side, looking effortless at 4:30/mile, and was inspired to get back to running more consistently. I haven't gotten back nearly as much of my '80s/'90s running shape as I expected to but I keep trying.

And I absolutely agree about running 5ks. I think more than any other distance, you can keep getting better at 5k races by running lots of 5k races, and improve at other distances by doing so.
