@ Daniel Moncaster Several of the Founding Fathers read every book that was published every year, along with the classics. Today it would be impossible to read every book published on any one subject in a year. K-12 basically teaches how to learn and the basics. When you get into college studies become more focused on a subject or discipline. Then there is historigraphy. Teaching is a art, and teaching the love of learning is one of the greatest gifts

There was a tug company on the Thames that had a code word given to them, and when they heard the code word they used their tugs to go and collect a number of small boats and tow them down to the coast. The Sheen was one of the tugs that they used and she is still around on the Medway. Engine still runs but she needs some serious work on her hull.
We are hoping to restore her. We might be crazy but can't stand the thought of her going to scrap, there's too much history in her.

He had always thought he arrived 2 or 3 weeks after it fell; from the the film he discovered he was there 3 days afterward. As a medic doing runs across the river returning injured Germans, and trading for injured Americans, he could have been on that bridge, except his orders were misplaced, slowing him down for 3 days.

Among the ten elements of the plan, Churchill included: “(i) Not only must the defence of Singapore Island be maintained by every means, but the whole island must be fought for until every single unit and every single strong point has been separately destroyed. (j) Finally, the city of Singapore must be converted into a citadel and defended to the death. No surrender can be contemplated, and the Commander, Staffs and principal officers are expected to perish at their posts.

@@CB-fz3li True but don't forget that the decision to send the best British and French armies to Belgium after the Germans invaded the Netherlands and Belgium was taken not ONLY by the French but ALSO by the British. That's how they got surrounded and cut off the other units. The best elements of the French army, which had been sent to Belgium, were stationed by the Ardennes in March 1940, exactly where the Germans invaded through the Ardennes in May 1940. The Battle could have had another turn if this regiment had stayed there. They were replaced by poorly trained and equipped conscripts.
Fun fact : the French had spotted a column of tanks moving in on the Ardennes but didn't take it seriously as they thought it was impossible to invade through the Ardennes.
Even stranger : "On May 7, an RAF reconnaissance Spitfire spotted a vast column of 400 Panzer tanks moving in on the Ardennes near Luxembourg. The clouds of dust made by the vehicles could be seen for miles around. The RAF pilot risked his life to overfly the column several times to be sure of his report and photos, knowing his information to be of vital importance. On May 8, the War Office in London issued an intelligence assessment that declared there was "no sign of an imminent invasion" ..... yet with the information and records on hand, it is inconceivable how they came to this conclusion". - Martin Allen.
      Really strange !!!!

My personal opinion about Dunkirk : At the end it was a wise decision taken by the British to retreat back to England. This way they didn't loose their professional army forces and could prepare for what was coming later. But also it wouldn't be fair to forget the last defence of Dunkirk being taken by the French. They fought until they fulfilled their mission and until they were running out of ammunition. It's not what cowards do.

This had such potential. But, no ... some idiot just had to BLAST THE BACKGROUND MUSIC!!! It’s called “Background Music” for a reason; it is played IN THE BACKGROUND!!! Not over top of the voice track!
Even closed captioning had a heck of a time getting the words right.

What is said here is not correct. People of my generation (70's and 80's) know Dunkirk. We Know what happened and we thank the gods that you went through it so we do not have to.
But the clock is ticking....We will soon have to.

    • @montygemma

I grew up in the 70's and we knew about most of the war because our grandads, some of our teachers etc were veterans but I don't think many of us knew much about the Great War though. Same with the WW2 generation in that they probably didn't know a lot about the battles of the Crimean War. So it's not surprising youngsters don't know a lot now.
One thing that is ironic though is that back in the 60's and 70's when kids did ask a lot of questions the veterans never wanted to talk about it and the ones that did were often bullshitters or were not at the sharp end of it.
