- St Vincent de Paul was tinyurl.com/2z... a French Catholic priest who dedicated himself tinyurl.com/46... to serving the poor. Vincent de Paul was born on 24 tinyurl.com/37... April 1581 in southern France in a tinyurl.com/27... peasant family. Vincent de Paul tinyurl.com/pr... spent his childhood days looking after his father’s sheep. When Vincent de Paul was 12 years old his father sent him to be educated by Franciscans nearby. Trusting in divine providence Vincent de Paul father sold his property to educate and secure his son’s future. Indeed Vincent excelled in his studies. Vincent de Paul perused his seminary studies and was ordained a priest in 1600. Five years later he was captured by Turkish pirates and was sold in slavery in Tunis. Within two years’ time Vincent de Paul converted his master and escaped with him to Paris. In 1618 he was appointed as a chaplain general of the galleys of France bringing hope and rays of light to the prisoners. At night he walked on the streets of Paris rescuing children who were abandoned and left to die. He is known as the friend and protector of the children left on the streets of Paris to die. In the course of time Vincent began earnestly to lead a life of prayer and self-denial. Vincent de Paul pastoral Ministry made him aware of the religious and moral destitution of the poor. Later on, Vincent de Paul decided to take concrete steps to remedy the situation. In 1625 Vincent de Paul founded Societies of Charity in many parts of France to look after the poor and the sick. In 1634 the charitable ladies were formed into a religious community under the name ‘Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul’ and their spiritual needs were met by the Congregation of the Missions ‘the Vincentians’. This congregation grew out of the companions St Vincent de Paul gathered in 1625 to help him in serving the country peasants. In the following year, Vincent and some like-minded secular priests pledged themselves to live in community and to devote themselves to the salvation of the poor. The Vincentians are dedicated to preaching missions to the country folks. These two congregations continue the work of St Vincent de Paul around the world.
From his room Vincent de Paul carried out extensive charitable activities. His influence was felt in the neighbouring countries too. Vincent de Paul was a revolutionary of his time and outstanding in active charity, humility and constant prayer. Vincent de Paul was an apostle of service and a giant of Charity. The idea of service was central to his teaching. Vincent de Paul got priest and lay people, both men and women, in the service of the poor and thus witnessing the gospel values of love for God and love for neighbour. Vincent de Paul put the basis of his charity works to Jesus who was sent to preach good news to the poor.
St Vincent understood that pastoral ministry is the primary scope of the priesthood and insisted that a priest is a man for others and that priesthood is not a status but a service and mission. He was a pioneer in clerical training. He was instrumental in establishing seminaries. He is the founder of the Congregation of the Mission and Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul.
He was preoccupied with serving the abandoned and the suffering. He became the consoler of the afflicted, a defender of the orphans, and a benefactor of the widows. He died on 27 September 1660 in Paris. He was beatified on 13 August 1729 in Rome by Pope Benedict XIII. He was canonised on 16 June 1737 by Pope Clement XII.
St Vincent says, “We must not judge the poor by their appearance, clothes or by their mental capacity as often they were ignorant and uncouth. Service to the poor is to be preferred before all else and to be performed without delay. Charity takes precedence over any rules.”
Let us resolve to participate in the charitable activities of St Vincent de Paul Society in whatever way we can, and thus share in the ministry and the merit of this great saint
