Is NES Godzilla Creepypasta THAT Scary?

  • So here’s the thing, I think the vast majority of creepypastas are low effort garbage. There are some well written stories here and there like “Penpal” and “Borrasca” but, like analog horror, the market is just so oversaturated with slop that it’s hard to find something that isn’t just cookie cutter nonsense where the premise is if this piece of recognizable media was scary. Even as a little kid, I just didn’t find these stories even remotely scary. Stories like Jeff The Killer, Slenderman, and Smile Dog weren’t all that interesting to me. The worst, though, were the video game creepypastas where le game is haunted. From my understanding, that sort of subgenre started with “Ben Drowned”, a decently written creepypasta that was centered around the game “The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask”. This subgenre got to be extremely repetitive and, again, oversaturated with trash like “sonic.exe”.
I absolutely loved Godzilla growing up and being a child with unlimited unsupervised internet access, I would inevitably hear about the NES Godzilla creepypasta. However, I never read it. I just rolled my eyes and thought “wow this looks stupid”. I saw the design of Red, thought it was lame and moved on with my life. Not scary. Not interesting. Just slop. I remember getting annoyed whenever the NES Godzilla game was brought up because it always felt like the creepypasta needed to be mentioned in the same breath.
It wasn’t until I mentioned the NES game in my retrospective on the Godzilla PS4 game that I realized how many people truly love this creepypasta. I had so many requests for me to cover this story, so I figured if I’m going to do this, I might as well go as in-depth as possible. Mind you, this is my first time ever reading this story. All I know about it is that the game is cursed, Red is supposed to be really scary and “Run” is sort of the most memorable phrase from this creepypasta. Will I be pleasantly surprised or will this be just another piece of creepypasta slop? Without wasting any more time, let’s get right into it.

For me this story starts like a typical Creepypasta but ends like a classic horror movie from the 80s and 90s, with the main character surviving but with lifelong trauma and the monster or villain de4d (the difference is that there is no ending with unexpected plot twist where the monster returns to claim its last victim)

Is the NES Godzilla Creepypasta scary? No. But I can’t help but still be invested every time I read it. The spritework is absolutely incredible, and the story, whilst nowhere near perfect, has a very fun and investing style that I can’t really say I dislike. Overall, it’s quite the enjoyable time, even if it fails at what its original goal was.

Not gonna lie the first time I watched Goji73 videos on the Creepypasta I thought it was pretty creepy (granted I was younger at the time those videos first popped up but still, those videos were very well edited and did creep me out every time I watched them). But now that im older its not as scary to me anymore. Its still entertaining to watch though. I guess it all depends on who you ask that might find this story scary or not. Hopefully the second story will be just as creepy. 🤔🕹📄👺🤷‍♂

What I liked about the Godzilla NES creepypasta was how the environment and the monsters made Godzilla feel small, Godzilla the KAIJU. In the creepypasta Godzilla the guy who the game is based off of, the guy ON THE COVER! isn't the main villain, he's not bloodshot eyes, he's not "Monster of Monsters.EXE", Godzilla is just used as a way to move the story, like Mothra, Anguinus, and Solomon.
What I'm trying to say here is the creepypasta was truly special as a game creepypasta. As creepypasta in general there have been better, but this creepypasta isn't Godzilla being the monster, its Godzilla monsters being killed, eaten, mutilated, transformed. Which is something you don't see from other video game creepypastas.
So yeah, it's not scary but it is a very unique game creepypasta. I agree with the criticisms. But to me this game isn't really a creepypasta, it's more of a journey.

Good review! I've always thought the story was meh but atmosphere and screenshots make it worth the occasional re-read.
As far as Red though, for sure I can see why it might not be all that to someone else. Personally, anyone I've ever showed Red has the same reaction as myself, he's unsettling. Something about his face, so hollow and soulless and human. I think his normal body, as well, is just freaky.
I can agree all his other forms are not nearly as effective, they're scary in how they show Red's power and threat; but the bodies themselves aren't nearly as freaky as the main body cause they look like real creatures, a fish and a bat. The final form especially is just a final boss, it's freaky looking but not in a creepy way.
I think it's GOOD that Red looks out of place. That's the point. A more normal-kaiju looking creature already isn’t going to look as scary; but also we're talking Godzilla. The king of the monsters, there's nothing Godzilla hasn't been able to eventually surplant. Godzilla doesn't stand a chance against this thing, it instakills him. In order to make this monster unsettling to the reader, and to Godzilla, it has to be different. It doesn't look like a kaiju, it looks like a demon. It doesn't move like an animal of any kind, it's unnervingly human in actions, it's simply WRONG. Wrong to the person viewing and wrong to the kaiju in the game, it's excellent.
Not to try and sway your thoughts on whether it's scary to you or not, Red just deserves more respect that it already gets. It's an excellent design for the main threat.
(Also I'd recommend looking up footage of Red in the fanmade creepypasta rom, the updated sprite, sound effects and movements REALLY sell how terrifying this creature is if the old crusty sprites don't do it for you)

I Honestly Think Making Red Not look like an Actual Godzilla Kaiju makes Him look Creepier.
It also Fits his Nature of Not being of The Game, when does the whole not being of the Godzilla Universe Either, It makes him look more Alien, and I think what People find Creepy About Him is His Face, Humans are Natrually Scared of Things that Aren't Quite Human, Red looks like The In-between Stage of a Human and a Skull, Hence hes Quite Uncanny to Look At, which makes him creepier in my opinion

(24:15) Not gonna lie that was one of the things that kinda creeped me out when I was little. I don't just mean someone directly looking at the camera I mean like someone standing there staring at you back from the TV or movie theater screen. Doesn't say or do anything and just stands perfectly still like a statue, like Micheal Myers or Jason Voorhees sometimes do. Like something bad is about or their planing on doing something pure evil. Maybe thats why Biollante's Rose form terrified me the most when I was younger. And yes I know, out of all of the Godzilla monsters in the entire series, a flower was the thing scared me the most as a kid lol. 😬👤📺🌹😱
(42:53) Well to be fair the narrator didn't really need to mention Melissa at the beginning of the story because it wasn't until the game kept taunting and reminding him about her and what happened. If he did mentioned her at the very beginning then it might have felt a bit obvious as to whats gonna happen down the road in the story. 🤔🕹👩🪦🤷‍♂

    • @FirewoodMediaTV
      @FirewoodMediaTV  Місяць тому +6

Regarding your last part about Melissa, there's a thing in storytelling called "set ups and pay offs". You set something up and it pays off later. "Back To The Future" has tons of them. Almost every single line in the first act ends up having a pay off later on in the story. A good writer can implement set ups in a subtle way where the audience won't realize it will pay off later down the road. So, I strongly disagree with you, the narrator absolutely needed to at least set up Melissa earlier on. Melissa is never set up anywhere in the story, so that plotline ends up feeling like it's coming out of nowhere. A good writer can make that set up feel natural with the story while not feeling like it's too obvious in terms of foreshadowing.

Hey! I just wanted to leave some of my thoughts here for the comment section to read, since... I have my own takes regarding some aspects of the story
I wanted to share a theory regarding the true nature of the cartridge, because I feel many have misinterpreted it, and this is mostly based off of the new information that has been given in Nes Godzilla Replay.
From this point onward, I will freely discuss the plot points seen in what we currently have of NGR, so... yeah, spoilers!
    ...
    ...
    ...
    ...
    ...
You still here? Good, now I'll continue,
As shown by the Transcendence Project, we can gather that the cartridge itself is anomalous, and one other thing: Every player experiences a whole new game.
Taking this into account, and taking into account Zach's experience... my personal theory is that the cartridge might be some sort of "extreme therapy"... it might sound crazy and I know it does sound crazy, but hear me out for a bit. I think this cartridge first establishes a link with it's player, usually finishing around Earth to Jupiter (which might depend on how much the player has on their head), after which the heavier anomalies begin manifesting.
As we can see, Pathos was the first proper fully new world in Zach's experience, while in Carl's experience, it was a whole new game from the get-go. Zach's experience was closely related to his status as a Godzilla fan, but Carl's experience is totally alien to any Godzilla media for the most part because he's only playing the cartridge due to Zach's account piquing his interest. Now, going mainly into Zach's experience, I don't think Red was the one pulling the strings, but rather he just tried to show himself as such; Red tried to impose himself as the God of his world, getting excruciatingly furious when things didn't go his way, and that's because *he's forced to play by the rules*. Red is just the main driving force, the manifestation of the event that killed Melissa, and thus, the biggest trauma Zachary is burdened with, but this doesn't give him absolute power over everything, he's just another asset the cartridge created for the game it wanted Zach to play, meant to be defeated. The game put Zach in extremely dangerous situations, outright almost killing him by the end, but the reward he reaps by killing red is closure for his trauma, he gets to be absolved from all guilt he felt regarding Melissa.
As I talk about this, I want to go on a brief tangent: I like to believe the theory that says Zenith is a representation of Red's body, it would explain the organic level... the seas of fire... the red angel, possibly being the blue angel still being digested... it all makes sense and would make it so much more than just gorey for the sake of being gorey.
Going back to the main point... my way of seeing it is that the cartridge essentially forces the player to overcome their burdens in a twisted, brutal way. Carl didn't seem particularly troubled by anything from what I recall, which would also explain why his experience isn't as terrifying as Zach's, he doesn't have any trauma or major fears to overcome.
I also like this idea because it would make Red seemingly more scary as an antagonist. He was never meant to be a powerful, undefeatable force that could destroy every Kaiju in Godzilla's universe, he's a monster. A handpicked monster specifically for Zachary and Zachary only. His worst nightmare, only for him.
And... the way he always seems to be so wrathful, so filled with anger, at the brink of snapping... it makes him all the more realistic and horrifying, because he's not all powerful.
I hope my way of seeing stuff is interesting, I'm open to receiving any other ideas regarding what I've brought to the table! This might be a bit too convoluted... but I'm really passionate about this story!
Pd: Sorry for any mistakes on my comment! English ain't my first language, so... yeah...

Sometimes people focus so much on the story that they end up not having the "immersion" in the Creepypasta, because what makes the other Creepypastas very famous is not necessarily the story itself, but the immersion that some channels put in and managed to make people feel, in addition to the music, ambient sounds, and even the narrator's voice, it's not just about the story or the visuals, I a person from Brazil, many of the videos they made about Creepypastas seemed to take themselves quite seriously to the point of entertaining me too much, of course at some moments I was still a child or I was still young, but even today, they manage to attract me to it, and what drives me away is either the "jokes" in the middle of the stories or just criticism with a humorous tone that ends up breaking the immersion of of the videos telling the stories, honestly, I love this Creepypasta from start to finish, I can see the "mistakes" even though some seem like just someone's personal taste, but in the end, it's a good creepypasta

The first 2 chapters absolutely rule, the worldbuilding is solid for the most part, the plot with the dead girlfriend kind of drags it down and could be reworked, but overall it’s a fun read. It’s not overly melodramatic like Sonic.exe, it’s not as trollish as Ben Drowned, but it’s clear that the work CosbyDaf put into the story stands tall with some of the great gaming creepypastas.

To answer the question, no not at all. But it's still a pretty fun time. I love the pixel art in it and unlike most creepypasta I feel like the writer actually likes Godzilla and kaiju in general. Also I love red as a design, he feels out of place due in a good way and while not being the coolest villain ever I feel that the "RUN" would be slightly creepy if I was playing it as a kid.
Definitely gonna play the fan made remake when it finally finishes.

Personally I've always enjoyed the story up until it becomes.. well beyond ridiculous. RED having always been a present force? The spirit of a dead girl that the story just.. expects the reader to care about? Especially when the whole introduction to her existence is literally in "Oh yeah, by the way this reminds me of" segment that just feels out of place. The game displaying graphics beyond the capabilities of the NES. The sheer cheese of the ending.. The whole thing was pretty great and eerie until it just becomes schlocky.

The Godzilla Creepypasta stands out because it is engaging and has a really likable main character. The sprite work and writing are great there are none of the stupid troupes, sometimes you don't need to be super scary just being a good story will do.

I like to think of creepypastas as those trash horror movies from the 90s. It is shit, but we like it, because it's entertaining. There's a scene from the movie Training Day, my favorite movie, that describes it perfectly. In this scene, Alonzo, the character played by Denzel Washington, is reading a newspapper and he says "This is a newspapper. 90% of what's in here is bullshit, but I read it anyways, because it entertains me."

I always liked it in concept. It's very original for the kind of story it's trying to tell, but it has the issue of those early creepypasta where everything turns into this gory nightmare of a game, and they start describing things that the NES couldn't have handled, but also how the player turns into this kind of immaculate pro player sorting the hardest challenges on the later stages for a game that was literally writing itself on the go.
If anything the demon would be a great game dev considering he made those levels so tense, challenging, and still winnable. Heck, the demon could've thrown an I wanna be the guy style of game but was too proud to not deliver an actually gun experience.
The demon should've taught the devil how to make a proper game instead of the half-baked poorly-coded game that was Pony Island.

I'm someone who's generally not scared of horror stuff in general with the reactions I do get being more like chills and creeped out rather than real terror.
I am definitely not scared by the Godzilla creepypasta, but I do find it fun, interesting, and engaging for the vast majority of its "runtime" so I would say that even if the horror part doesn't hIt it's still a pretty good story, especially for creepypasta standards and especially especially for gaming creepypasta standards.

Reading through it, the only parts that stuck out to me as "creepypasta" was mostly just the beginning chapters and the ending. Other than that, I thought it was wholey unqiue to have a game start off as normal, only to flip to a whole different set of stuff. Like you turned on a secret B Side mode for the game with new levels. Scary? No. Neat? Yes.

    So a few things.
While I do whole-heartedly understand people for not being too scared by this story, horror is still subjective. When I first saw Goji73's read aloud of the whole story, with his editing and music choices, meeting Red for the first time actually gave an impression on me. I was 13 when I first found this creepypasta and Goji73 sounded very genuine as he narrated. But that's a lot of stories in this genre with narrators trying to be funny in a crude way.
I probably was of age to be consuming that kind of content but Red scared me for a while. And then I quickly grew out of it and didn't find the creepypasta scary anymore. But I still found Red's design to be kind of awesome. I disagree mostly with it not fitting the Godzilla design philosophy. Clearly this is pixel art and there was a bunch of other original creations in the game that wouldn't fit the Godzilla world but I didn't care. Red and all the new sprites looked liked it fit the game's art style in my opinion. Perhaps computer animation or maybe even cgi with some live action can also be another medium to adapt these monsters.
Now as for how younger generations view older media, I do believe that's our fault with us making these creepypastas and videos in the first place and younger generations not having the same restrictions we did growing up. It was a Gen Z issue and it's definitely becoming a gen alpha issue as well, if not worse. Instead of not properly educating our young with how old media use to be like, we instead create false stories of our past with creepypastas and analog horror and young impressionable minds aren't going to know what's fake or not. That can be a detrimental issue if not properly guided. Most of us, if not all of us should be accountable and guide the younger generation towards a better path. Not continue to feed them this garbage.
Need I remind you that there were actually documented of cases where children committed underage felonies because they thought these stories to be real and inacted their twisted fantasies in real life. Please, let's not have more of that. I'm serious. The parents/guardians of these children failed them.
Please monitor what your children watch on the internet and don't make them watch this kind of content under the age of 15.

In my opinion, Nes Godzilla Creepypasta is awesome, and it makes me want to continue reading a story or watch it dubbed on UA-cam. For me, Red the Hell Beasts' design is terrifying. It makes me wonder if he was one of Godzilla's kaiju; he must be a Hellish Giant Scorpion with a Skull-Human Head. For Melissa's plot, I think the narrator like Zachary keeps his memories for a long time, like he kept this trauma past for years, but after the game haunts with the words "Melissa Kill Yourself" he is shocked by the game that knew Melissa too. I think Cosbydaf made a good original Kaiju design. And, I think you should check the Nes Godzilla sequel like the Nes Godzilla replay.

Short answer? No, lol. Thinking of a giant radioactive lizard running around scared to death because an even bigger skeleton monster with the head of a human bigger than GODZILLA himself is just too wild and crazy to be scary. It can be a somewhat scary game itself, like the more scary versions of the Sonic.EXE stuff, and it can be unsettling and give that horror feel for it, but the concept itself is not scary at all IMO. (Plus I saw the Hanna-Barbera Godzilla who's 30 stories tall fight an electromagnetic turtle that grew so big Godzilla was in his mouth stopping him from eating him, and I just imagine that every time which is just a funny visual, lol.)

"And theres a big spider demon and it hurts you in real life when you get hurt in the game and then his girlfriend is in the game because she died but the demon made her die and then he gets the super monster and it destroyed the demon"
