If someone made me sell my stuff, and took the money to replace my furniture with 'funky pieces', I'd be absolutely furious. That beautiful brick covered with that horrible wallpaper, what even is that? Why would anyone pay her to ruin their homes?
If anyone did a design like this in my home, I'd sue them! Barry was being polite. His face said it all he hated it. I would hoard it on purpose just to hide that abominable design. It could have been so easy. Study Dr. Who and design his home after some of the sets. Though Barry has lost his collection, he would have walked right into a Dr. Who set rather than an episode of laugh in
It's entertainment. These people argee to have people come in and change their homes. They're going to do that in the easiest, most effective way for them. the hoarder can change them iof they're that bothered surely...if they were that bothered they'd have done that already. thers' only so much spoon feeding they can do.

True. 42:32 shows what would be nice to put in other rooms of the house if desired to add personality. The collectibles that are more valuable and more personally cherished can be placed on wall-hung decorative shelves as shown, decorative illuminated bookcases as shown, wall-hung shadow boxes, or in larger decorative curio cabinets. A smart, flat, floating shelf hung with a French cleat and adorned with decorative knickknacks is a great addition to any wall. Here in Arizona, I would go with the shadow boxes and curio cabinets because the dust here is simply hellacious. It settles on everything. It gets into every crevice. One needs to take down and dust everything every few days just to keep things looking decent. Unless of course, the person has a brand new house that was built using the complete sealing design with filtered make-up air being used to replenish oxygen and remove odors and CO2, along with an oversized HVAC filter box which is so big it can use a HEPA media without destroying the blower motor or compressor. Alternatively, one can just have a legit air purifier in every room. 😸 My mother moved us here from the East Coast, and she was happy that a secondary consequence of the move would be that our asthma would improve due to the lack of huge trees and fields of weeds and flowers blowing pollen out all over the place. How wrong she was. It's sooooooo much worse. 🤣🤣🤣 Jesus Christ. So yeah, definitely display the collectables to add flair and to allow yourself to actually ENJOY them, but do it in a manner that protects them/their value.
I'm upset this program doesn't include a professional in hoarding disorder to help Barry. His collection is not just stuff, it's his security blanket. He has a strong emotional connection to his collections. Without professional mental health support for Barry he may just gradually keep collecting and his house could return to how crowded it was before.
There was a professional involved. The hypnotherapist. I also believe that Barry would have been recommended to have ongoing counselling and that his very caring brother will make sure he follows up. However, I do agree that hoarding is an emotional/mental problem and redecorating is not the answer. Hoarders are seldom concerned with aesthetics and they certainly don't see their surroundings in the way other people might.
These are scammers. They sell his with people they conspire with and split the sales and on top of it they take what cash he got and give him cheap vomit “design” and pocket from the rest of the money too.
Emphatically speaking, the dark and gray paint is depressing and that trend needs to go. They are sterile and uninspiring colors especially when assisting someone suffering from a hoarding condition. I am disappointed because one's home needs to reflect their own personal charms and not a decorator's odd style superimposed on to them. A decorator should be consulted to help one discover their own style and help them develop a home they are happy to be in.
barry’s works in the science department at my school and he’s always being hassled by other students. i’m gonna ask him how he’s doing on monday and how his house is now🙂
If Barry has a compulsive collecting disorder, or HD, simply removing his stuff and redesigning his home will not solve his problem. These "clean-out" tv shows are entertainment more than actually helping someone with a mental / emotional disorder that often has a genetic component. He needs cognitive behavioral therapy to help him work through WHY he has this compulsion and to create new attitudes and habits about "stuff". Otherwise, he will refill his home again in a few months. This therapy takes months, years, to be effective. Notice that none of these types of shows have follow-ups a year later to see if their "helping" actually worked?
I think there is something missing in his life and that thing is replaced by collection. I would say if he found and nice wife and got kids he would no longer need to collect and fill his home with stuff ...
@@mariehaikal3048 he's hardly likley to with a home like that though..kind of needs to do that the other way round..clear up first, then try being a bit more sociable..

“It’s different” aka he hates it “Me, me, me” the designer thinks it’s about her What a load of BS. Poor guy gave up about 98% of his collection for a dull and depressing couple rooms and has been left with basically none of his collection whatsoever. That’s absolutely horrible. He should’ve been able to keep at least a few hundred more items after spending so much cash and dedication to his collection. Doesn’t need to be messy or cluttered. Have it stored in multiple large boxes and get to it when you can. The designer sucks. This was so sad. Guy is like me, and many others. Needs his collection and stuff to help his anxiety and mental health and it makes him happy. This obviously didn’t. Can tell by the multiple “it’s different”s and the tone. What a shame.
All Barry needed was a neutral space with lots of storage and hidden storage. Something that will last trends and 'modern' living. He's clearly a muted type of personality and isn't interested in funky pieces. This designer is such a 90s/00s 'Changing Rooms wannabe', who needs to be designing beauty salons and the interior of wealthy people who think the expense they pay looks classy, when in actual fact it looks cheap, garish and tacky.
Wow...that was the worst reaction to a home makeover ever. You can just see how Barry was so wound up but stayed the course and was a complete gentleman to the designer. He showed every indication of disappointment and regret. ...lol
ok, he has a problem. But i don't understand what was the point of selling thing he liked to buy things he did not want. If they wanted him to like the space, why not involve him in the designing, it is his home after all and he is the one who has to live in it.
Barry seems very lonely he is a lovely young man bless him. He needs a nice young lady, just blink those lovely eyes sweetheart I hope you get what you want in life❤
The designer makes it all of these changes about herself, not the client. It's arrogance on her part -- Barry doesn't like, let alone "love" her design.
This is rather upsetting. Berry seems to me to be ND. It's frustrating when they say "Doesn't it make you happy that you can see the walls?", what kind of gaslight is this?? lmao Sure it has come overwhelming to the point where it is dangerous, but some therapy with managing it would be a lot better than ripping it all away suddenly. This can be really traumatizing and make things worse. I'm a hoarder as well that is ND, it seems to me that he has an attachment to Dr Who. But just because I say this doesn't mean I know what to do, it's just frustrating that people have to be a certain way to fit into what others expect of them. Yes, it was unsafe. But I feel like there was a much better way to go about helping him. Shock therapy doesn't work for everyone.
This is the best idea I’ve seen when dealing with hoarders, moving it all out of the home ,the collections were well organised into categories- someone even went through the magazines and piled identical copies together. I suspect Barry is autistic.
"We brought a plant in for that all important splash of color." YOU HAD COLOR!! You covered it up with black and white wallpaper for some reason! I don't understand.
I don't mean to be unkind, but the designer's make-overs seem to all end up looking cheap, garish and gimmicky, despite the money she spends. They never achieve any level of classic design or elegance, and all look frighteningly similar - no matter what type of structure she is working with.
Does the designer ever listen to what the people actually want? Do you think if she seen all these comments about herself she would still be a designer ? haha. 😅
I came here to say things, but I think everything I wanted to say has been said in the commentary section here. As a former collector I felt his pain when I saw the transformation. He's not an unreasonable person, and absolutely not a "hoarder" as we know it, the guy was actually fairly organized, he just didn't have the space - and he wanted space for his grandkids. Unfortunately I know this story far to well (speaking for myself here), you clean up your entire home to a showroom near hotel-like state, and while the first visits are nice, it all fades back to loneliness again. But I solved it myself by redesigning the entire house to my liking, it's been clutter-free for 2 years now, but the secret to my happiness with the clean and organized home is to have it my way, meaning not some hippy designer with a 70's thing going to make the place into a dark depressive flashback to the 70's on steroids, but a practical enjoyable place with lots of space and a feel like "I want to be there every day I come home from work". That place in this makeover is, gastly, dark, depressing and I wouldn't set my foot in it, I'd be depressed in 10 minutes there. And if I know him right (and I think I do, judging by 90 percent of the commenters in here) I'd say that has got to be the worst interior design I've ever come across.
Keep it Simple. Example: I have 5 book shelves. The only books I keep are ones that fit into these shelves. I only keep books by my favorite authors. I limit the number of authors I collect to 3. The other books are one-offs. I keep open areas for bookends and collectibles or knick knacks. If I buy a new book I must have space for that book on the shelf or I have to get rid of a book in order for the new book to remain. I donate my old books to the library or other organizations so that other people can enjoy them, too. I see it as a gift to others to donate my well loved and no longer needed books. If I have a need for sentiments I can take a picture of that item so I have it to look back on. I can also make notes about a book that I have read, why I liked it, what inspired me, etc. These things help me to love my things and not become a hoarder like my mom was. I love books. I love stuff. All kinds of stuff!! I could collect a million things but I choose not to so that I can enjoy what I currently have and just live day to day life without having too much to overwhelm me. I always seem to have things to donate and that's okay. New comes in and old stuff goes out. It's the way of life. And we have to accept that. Also, by not collecting all the things you can enjoy other people's homes and their collections. The internet is now a great resource for learning and reading everything!! Books on Kindle can keep you from creating a hoard or being bombarded by a hoard. You just have to make the decision to say I can let go. I can let go because I'm not going to be here forever and as my time is limited I should enjoy all that I have while I'm here. The rest of what I don't use can go to someone who can use it. I would like my items to remain in good condition until it is passed along to someone else. So I have to be able to keep my things and my spaces clean and maintained. I will not neglect my family, my responsibilities, my own life for the sake of my stuff. I can let go because I refuse to have so many things that overwhelm my family after I pass away. I can let go because when I look at my things they make me happy. I can let go because I want my family and friends to look at my things and it brings them happiness peace and fond memories. And if it does none of these things.... It has to leave. And I say good bye. 👋 I make sure the item leaves my home within 3 days. If you set a time limit you will find it helps you to stay on task and focused. And most importantly....If you need help ASK SOMEONE. 💜🙏💖
The "designer" on this show says repeatedly that if they like the room, they won't want to clutter it up. She's as dumb as a box of bricks. Hoarders don't want to clutter up rooms, it's a side effect of other things. This show is terrible.
Conservatory way to dark everything shouldn't be so dark not everyone likes orange 🤪she does her own thing. I don't like designer's that don't consider the client.

@@kg6801 i would be yes. im very familiar with hoarding, and ive never come across one who gave a damn about how it affected anyone around them. if they were, they wouldnt be hoarding.
@@lucyw.7597 It's unfortunate that that's been your experience, though it's not always the case. People can't just stop something that's a neuropsychological disorder no matter how much they care how it affects people around them, that's just not how it works, it requires specific treatment to change the behaviours. Just like people can't just stop having conditions like depression or OCD or schizophrenia because it affects others around them. It's not a choice.
Clearing out clutter--absolutely makes sense. Hiring a decorator--why? Your home should be comfortable and of use to the people living there, not some kind of art project that is to impress people who don't live there.
The "lack of design lady" should have put a little WHO in thr design....all her disasters are worse than being in a cave. I wouldn't trust her to design a little box
Why does this designer always use deep dark colors? Every show I've watched her do are small in sq footage, and some with low ceilings, she turns them into dark and even smaller dungeons.
Recently I heard someone on social media refer to this type of "decorating" as, "Too crowded for comfort." Ironic, since people accumulate with the goal of living in comfort.
Fantasy thinking: "My collection of toys/dolls/enter any obsessive purchases are worth a fortune." Reality: Any items purchased are only worth what someone at that particular time is willing to pay for it. Many times, hoarded items have NOT been taken care of and they aren't worth anything.
The man obviously live alone and you give him a depressing color of black, gray and orange. Remember how he said the ORANGE? I don't think he is happy about it.
It's an OCD spectrum disorder, yes. Hoarders exhibit obsessive and compulsive habits/characteristics which collectively conglomerate to produce the hoarder and their hoard. :(
Why isn't she doing something he likes doctor who theme it's not about what she wants it's what he wants and as a collector he will not let go easily I know as me and my kids collect doctor who DC marvel horror and I can't wait to move so I can display them properly most of his collection can be displayed upstairs in his home
I know I feel like she forces her dark colours and out dated ideas on everyone. Guarantee a Deer head, dark grey accent wall and naff vase every single time.
Does this woman really think her design will vure a mental disorder? "He'll live it so much he won't want to fill it up." That's not how this works. And, please. An orange desk? Does Barry look funky at all?
Why on earth wouldn't she incorporate Dr. who or star wars or something pop culture that he clearly likes in to this design 🤦♀ That would be so much fun to do and he would genuinely like it enough to keep clean and show off, but nooooo.
"It might be a little out of Barry's comfort zone but " = the client will hate it and I don't care

such a healthy mindset . I wish my elderly Mom could realize this....
He needs to remain in counceling if he hopes to stop his behavior. He's a shopaholic and a hoarder and it doesn't end with a remodel
Of course. Nobody ever says that... Anyone who thinks that is a fool and not thinking completely through the problem. 🤷🏻♂️
The "designer" on this show says repeatedly that if they like the room, they won't want to clutter it up. She's as dumb as a box of bricks. Hoarders don't want to clutter up rooms, it's a side effect of other things. This show is terrible.
@@mannys9130 the "designer " says it
That designer has a serious color scheme problem. If she is one of the best in UK, I'm glad I live far from it ahahaha
They are giving a lonely man am empty space.
which he will soon fill with load more of old tat!
When you get your interior designer from Temu
This man just needs a store to rent or buy.
do not forget his father started the radio obsession.
Conservatory way to dark everything shouldn't be so dark not everyone likes orange 🤪she does her own thing.
I don't like designer's that don't consider the client.
Awful interior design
One thing to put a desk in a living area, but in a doorway? Time for a new designer.
Can't stand Abby 😢 she's all about her!
Oh, that is one awesome nephew 😆
VHS tapes as shelves = Genius!!😊
I am a toy collector and I was like if I had the space I would 100% have a toy collection display/play room. He has the space so why not use it. He has no kids or wife.
The narator is so excited by everything:
narator: Barry moves into his brother's house and get to spend precious time with his nephew
Reality: from a hoard of games Barry didn't bring anything for his nephews, sits down and gives them H5
Unsuprisingly...a hoarder seesm completely immune to anhyone else around them...
That narrator is Jane Horrocks, aka Bubble from Ab Fab!!!
@@lucyw.7597 You'll be surprised that hoarders are not all like that at all 😉
@@kg6801 i would be yes. im very familiar with hoarding, and ive never come across one who gave a damn about how it affected anyone around them. if they were, they wouldnt be hoarding.
It's not a choice.
paint : a masculien soft gray, give this man tardis bleu, with amber an gold finishes
"Hypnotherapy has been shown to help " citation needed
Why the f are they trying to sale his family heirlooms! He has a lot of duplicates, sell them, and creates displays for his priced positions.
Clearing out clutter--absolutely makes sense. Hiring a decorator--why? Your home should be comfortable and of use to the people living there, not some kind of art project that is to impress people who don't live there.
Best win-win solution: Barry just needs the Tardis, problem solved 😊
That´s an Idea! 😃
The "lack of design lady" should have put a little WHO in thr design....all her disasters are worse than being in a cave.
I wouldn't trust her to design a little box
Everyone was very sweet in this episode.
Im so happy my addiction is miniatures
There she goes again - covering bright colors with dark, depressing ones. I haven't seen a single design of hers that i have liked.
Why does this designer always use deep dark colors? Every show I've watched her do are small in sq footage, and some with low ceilings, she turns them into dark and even smaller dungeons.
Design Crime! And „it’s orange!!!“
Recently I heard someone on social media refer to this type of "decorating" as, "Too crowded for comfort."
Ironic, since people accumulate with the goal of living in comfort.
How brilliant to bring in a former Doctor Who!
Fantasy thinking: "My collection of toys/dolls/enter any obsessive purchases are worth a fortune."
Reality: Any items purchased are only worth what someone at that particular time is willing to pay for it. Many times, hoarded items have NOT been taken care of and they aren't worth anything.
I like this show so much more than I like the US version.
The man obviously live alone and you give him a depressing color of black, gray and orange. Remember how he said the ORANGE? I don't think he is happy about it.
He looks like the pingouin in Batman
"...Penwing....Pengling...." -Benedict Cumberbatch
At least he isn't intellectually void like you. I do love the fact you attempted to insult a decent bloke, yet you can't even spell.
Kids speak the truth - “looks like you’ve woken up in the show home”. Tru dat 🤢
Barry's out of touch with reality. Now that I've seen the entire show, he has changed. he seems lighter, less "stuck". Good for him!!!
Isn't hoarding due to be put on the DSM as a mental illness?
It's an OCD spectrum disorder, yes. Hoarders exhibit obsessive and compulsive habits/characteristics which collectively conglomerate to produce the hoarder and their hoard. :(
Big up Barry, love it when he brings the stuff for our practicals.
Is this an in joke that is going right over my head, or is he actually a science teacher?!
@@charlie_says3841 he works at my secondary school
same barry lets me in the lift
I'd never paint doors and trim the same color as the walls, but still an improvement.
Why isn't she doing something he likes doctor who theme it's not about what she wants it's what he wants and as a collector he will not let go easily I know as me and my kids collect doctor who DC marvel horror and I can't wait to move so I can display them properly most of his collection can be displayed upstairs in his home
As an anti-Whovian, I always found the shows dark, gloomy and oppressing. Decor matched perfectly lol.
I like the VHS shelf’s and not much else
No way would I have sold anything. They could have built him a shed and helped clean up, but that wouldn't make good TV
why would you want to design something for a home that is outside the comfort zone of someone living there? The designer is just full of buzz words.
Those gray walls went all the way through the house. Gross.
But I liked when he said,"It's Orange."
"How much is Bill Oddie going to be worth in 50 years time? Nothing!" 😂😂😂
Oh goodness not this god awful designer again 😬
I know I feel like she forces her dark colours and out dated ideas on everyone. Guarantee a Deer head, dark grey accent wall and naff vase every single time.
His house looks like mine and I'm packing up to move I think if he had things to properly store and display his stuff would be great
The decor is beautiful but soooo not his style he doesn’t seem to like it at all
The way the designer pulls her gob around she is like a ventriloquists dummy😅
Does this woman really think her design will vure a mental disorder? "He'll live it so much he won't want to fill it up." That's not how this works. And, please. An orange desk? Does Barry look funky at all?
Why on earth wouldn't she incorporate Dr. who or star wars or something pop culture that he clearly likes in to this design 🤦♀ That would be so much fun to do and he would genuinely like it enough to keep clean and show off, but nooooo.
