I owe you a big thank you man, trained lau gar on and off for almost 16 years then lost my groove and ended up not training for 4 years when my son was born, recently found your channel again and it gave me the drive to get back training 💪
Congrats on finding that spark again. I am 27 and slowly losing it, afraid as this is sorta my identity lol. Did it haunt u deep down that u hadn't trained for so long?
Stef, start playing chess. Chess saved my sanity. It has the same strategic thinking as fighting, just no brain damage. You can get rid of a lot of aggro through chess. Come join me for Chess some time. I'll show you some of the things I've learned.
qi la la's fighting philosophy and the way he handles incoming punches is full of wing chun, it just doesn't look like in the movies because it is not supposed to look like that. a lot of people completely misunderstand the functionality of most wing chun techniques, therefore when it happens differently to their preconceptions, they will not recognize it as such.
Just as I was wondering about your braces you put in the message about the braces. I'm happy for you, make sure you never spar without a gumshield! Love the channel man!
Wing Chun is a style of Kung-Fu. It always seems silly to me when people can’t make that distinction. When you say you “see a bit of Kung-Fu”, which style are you seeing?
Yeah that also grids my gears... No one says: "this guy does Japanese stuff", when he or she practices Karate or Judo. Saying "I do kung-fu" is the same as "I practice Chinese stuff"...Not very precise. @@antonydrossos5719

one thing about proper kung fu is that when they get hit, it doesnt tend to matter. the hits dont do damage. we saw that with the systema guy, even tho its not kung fu, its got some similar principles. we see it with Qi La La as well. the proper posture and body mechanics of different kung fu styles, helps practitioners dissipate force they receive while taking minimum damage. even if the practitioner isnt necessarily "good", if their kung fu is proper, they still come out ok. still waiting for someone to pop up who not only does proper kung fu, but also does it "well".
I think you have a tendency to call out "wingchun usage" whenever there seem to be a clash in "trapping range", it whenever the stance looks like wingchun. But from what I can see he's constantly using it as part of his way of fighting. A pure example of the techniques though is at 6:45 where he does a typical parry trap attack move that is often demonstrated. But the way he tries to find his way in with touch sensitivity rather than mainly jabs and punching angles is the kungfu strategy possibly. I also a bit sceptical towards the often used hands near your face being the ultimate defense comment, as distance, angling and blocking/parrying can be used as well. Taking a kick or strong punch to the hands near your face can still have an impact. Even if there are risks involved, it can sometimes be better to stop the attack from happening, or cutting/redirecting the force of the attack. Example parrying the elbow to prevents the punch from getting the full swing, or moving to a advantagous range. But you're right that the taller guy probably should have used more looping punches in close range where his long arms and legs could not effectively attack Qilala
Being a shorter guy 5"7", pretty much EVERYONE I spar has a height/reach advantage on me. We spar once a week and I train in old-school Moo Duk Kwan Tae Kwan Do which most resembles in style to between a cross of tang Soo Do and Shotokan Karate. I have found that timing and combo's helps me overcome the height/reach disadvantage. Also being a bit speedier helps.
Qi-La-La definitely held his own against such a larger opponent, good on him. Proper training can help equalize against a larger weight/height class. I can definitely remember having to spar against larger, taller opponents back when I was training in 5-Animal Shaolin-Fist (decades ago, in my late teens).
Big Guy needs to visit the gym once in while..... I mean so should I, I have a beer belly, and I'm totally out of shape, but hey I don't step in to a ring to fight either. 😁
I see qi lala doing blitzing entries and bong saus. I was taught to keep my hands between my face and their centerline and keep continuous pressure and be soft, but always forward from the centerline.
I definitely think if his guard was kept high, he would def have a better time defensively. In the last reaction video we did of him, Qi La La for example, ate a lot of crosses but had a better time when his arms were covering his center.
Qi la la did really well against this big fella. Id really like to see him move towards the big guys back side when moving. He moves to his front side to often and is moving directly into his strike distance, and with his hands down too often. He is a warrior taking this match up.
hands low against a tall kickboxer can work because their legs take a different angle when they come up to kick, and their arms, when they come down to punch. you can pull their punches down easier, and arm shield their kicks more effectively, so lower hands is viable.
I love the no rules below the belt because sometimes you see boxers wearing oversize trunks that's yanked up and over their belly button. It's always funny.
big guy would've done better if he was more aggressive and steamrolled his smaller opponent. awesome fight tho, always good to see technique winning over size and power
