How to use the Roland SE-02 for External Midi CC Parameter Sequencing w/ MC-707 inc Midi info

  • A quick demonstration on what midi control change messages are available for the Studio Electronics / Roland Boutique Minimoog clone the SE02, and how we can sequence those midi cc's to control parameters in external gear, in this instance the Roland Aira groovebox MC707, along with recording the incoming sequence directly into the groovebox itself.
Initially I was going to use the 707 to sequence the parameters of the hybrid monosynth, (that's right Roland, I went there... when did you last see an analogue synth with THIS much Midi info..? lol), but it was much more fun this way around!
For anyone who has been following the "should it stay or should it go" dilemma this video might have just helped me make my mind up... Just listen to the part where the 707 sequence is raised over the SE-02's to see why...!!!

Sweet video! The candle was a nice touch. I use my SE-02 on everything. I've been digging into Midi scripting and can already in my opinion tell its more important than learning music theory. When it comes to sound design! Hope things are well for you! Cheers

      Hey Sunny, cheers mate!
I've not come across midi scripting before, thankfully! It sounds like a fun project though... lol What are you doing with it??

@@krsTBedfordStudios MIDI scripting is intended for hardware manufacturers and advanced users to create custom support for MIDI controllers. If you are new to programming, MIDI scripting will be confronting and confusing at first. This is normal, but patience and persistence will be rewarded! Its the programing language of Midi.

At first glance I saw it to be python based, and handy for midi mapping from Fruity Loops?? (Showing my age there!!)
      It sounds interesting!

@@krsTBedfordStudios I have just scratched the surface of it but I think it could be worth the time to learn how to use it. I think we have heard all the individual sounds, finding different ways to manipulate them is endless!

Where did you get the document at 1:57? I am trying to do something similar.

I think I found it in the manual downloaded from Roland's website??

Hi Krs ....... pretty new to music production , but having learnt music theory over LD, I see I’ve bought all similar kit to yourself - MX1, 707, TB-3 SE02 & Tr8s ...plus Novation Launchpad 3. ....but I need a guru like you to help me use/link it all together .....& create the magic these boys deserve ..do you do paid work ....I’m in Uk , South coast if that helps ??? Cheers for looking.

Haha I'm far from what I'd call a guru, I'm just an explorer the same as the rest, with a pile of gear, a heap of manuals and an inquisitive mind! Lol
I'm happy to help with advice though Mark...
I certainly don't do paid work, but i have patreon if at any point the advice seems worthy of a coffee lol
To link those I'd use the USB ports on the MX-1 for the Aira, TR-8s in USB 1, MC-707 in USB 2 (I'd remember those in those ports as primary and secondary drum machine lol)
TB-3 in USB 3 for bus power and the Boutique into 4...
Are you using the Launchpad with Ableton???
I'm also UK, East Midlands, but I get around a lot!!

Did the 707 play back that same pattern with the cc messages

Hey Steve, yes, with the motion record on whilst recording the incoming sequence then it recording the incoming parameter changes too 😀

@@krsTBedfordStudios was it just the 4 different cc's. Also I want to setup the 707 to record pitch bend from my midi controler did figure it out

@@stevewoywitka3258 yeah, that's all I did, I've done more with the 707 in the past though...
That should be fairly straightforward, assign pitch to one of the macros and then assign that macro to whatever cc # the modwheel on your controller transmits 😀

@@stevewoywitka3258 I'm pretty sure I did, I was sending the control changes from elsewhere but it recorded them in...?
I'll try to do this again and get back to you to confirm though!
What controller are you using? Are you still able to control the parameter changes from your controller ?
