No joke, when I was seventeen I lived in Calgary and had barely any friends. I was a depressed teenaged boy with not much will to live, but my best friend was this local Canadian girl at my school who taught me what it means to live and to be human. Afterwards, I lived out as many days as I could in whatever young years I had. Eventually, I moved with my dad when I was 19 to California and the years went on. When I was 23 I had already graduated, got employed at a job and had money to do what I wanted. I wanted to go back to Calgary and visit my old friend. Right as I got into my rental car and turned on the radio, this was seriously the first song I heard playing. It was a beautiful time I had there, revisiting the places I spent my youth, catching up with old friends, and meeting her again. Sadly later on that same year, she and I parted ways as she had changed mentally, yet I still appreciate the good times I had back in Calgary, and this song always takes me back.
It's funny at he mentions when he was 31 years old at one stage. I don't know what it is about being 32 and 33 but the number of people I've known who have gone through a year or two of total crisis and breakdown, turbulence and change at that exact point in their lives is surprising. It happened to me,it happened to a couple of guys a bit older than me who I worked for,it's happened to friends a bit younger than me who've needed support and understanding to help them through. I believe even Jesus was that age when he went through his betrayal, trial, crucifixion and resurrection! However, just take it from me,as a 50-something who's been through a few ups and downs on life's rollercoaster, than even though you may be down in the dumps and no longer see any much of a future,at least none comparable to the life you had and were enjoying before you took the hit,if this happens to you that you just have to hang in there until it turns and sooner or later it will, and bountiful times will return.
There is something about this tune….makes me feel… empty, nostalgic, and a impending doom on moving forward with life. But the lyrics are alive and passionate. Confusing and saddening me yet liberating me.
Last year in my forties. Never cared about my age. But 50 is bothering me and I don’t know why. I’m in good shape, still feel good and still love to laugh. But I’m seeing the horizon getting closer. We all go through it I suppose.
My dad used to blast this on drives he loved Cochrane and red rider , I find myself thinking about my dad when I hear this . Now I have my daughter and I want her to hear her dad listening to it like I once did
Well yes and no. Canada produced such great artists as Rush, Saga, Alexisonfire... At that point you got to admit that our country produced some of the best artists of this gendra.
Tom Cochrane is playing live tonight here in Moose Factory, ON CANADA! Los Lobos last night its been an awesome Gathering of our People 2024. We are all one.
THIS is my favourite for all time Tom Cochrane/Red Rider song. Absolutely brilliant lyrics, singing and song writing. I just don't understand why "Life is a Highway" made it so big and "Boy Inside the Man" didn't. Crank it up and sign your lungs out, it's a cure all for anything that ails you!
A great driving song! when i graduated from school in 1990 I loaded up my old metallic green Chev pickup with all my stuff ,and I played this As the skyline of the city disappeared into the western horizon as i headed east.
Well......................not to pretend I'm a math wiz, but 5 out of 500 would be exactly 1% since you were asking. Now it's 12 dislikes so there's at least 12 who have no taste. Red Rider should have made it as big as any band in the world including the Beatles and Stones imo.
I just sewn him live at the Richmond Hill Theatre of the performing arts, Tom you and tour band Rock, loved the acoustic intro, still have the pipes chum!
I am 57 My Mom died when I was 10 years old I am this boy inside the man - this song has been my personal anthem sine it was released - miss I u everyday Mom - ❤ till we meet again
I cranked this song in my 84 Chevette was I was 19. "walked out with my girl,"was right, been married to her 20 years now. Im 43 & this song's come around more than full circle!
Just cruising old artists and stumbled upon an awesome tune! This should be rereleased today. It would be hit! What staying power. Sounds like it was justrecorded. We missed out on getting more Tom Cochran in the states. SOunds great cranked!

Boy Inside the Man Tom Cochrane, Red Rider When I turned seventeen We had passion, we had dreams Thought the love we were fighting for Was something holy, something more When I turned twenty-one We were outside on the run When I walked out with my girl We went halfway around the world I dreamed that I saw her standing there They're running for the boy inside the man I was hit hard by the light so bright it burned And all at once I knew she'd understand Boy inside the man Boy inside the man When I turned twenty-five We were hungry, we had drive When I turned much older then 'Cause the boy was lost in pride Now I just turned thirty-one And I've lost and I have won Still I've kept my dreams alive 'Cause the boy will never die I dreamed that I saw her standing there They're running for the boy inside the man I was hit hard by the light so bright it burned And all at once I knew she'd understand Boy inside the man Boy inside the man I dreamed that I saw her standing there They're running for the boy inside the man I was hit hard by the light so bright, it burned And all at once I knew she'd understand Boy inside the man Boy inside the man Boy inside the man Boy inside the man

1986. I was 25 and dating my wife and she was 18. She helped me in so many ways. We are still together and we will forever be together.
This song is about growing up and not wanting to lose the boy and youth inside you... Man i can relate, we are all victims of time..
This Song is Better Than Ed Sheeran's castle on the hill

Boy Inside the Man
Tom Cochrane, Red Rider
When I turned seventeen
We had passion, we had dreams
Thought the love we were fighting for
Was something holy, something more
When I turned twenty-one
We were outside on the run
When I walked out with my girl
We went halfway around the world
I dreamed that I saw her standing there
They're running for the boy inside the man
I was hit hard by the light so bright it burned
And all at once I knew she'd understand
Boy inside the man
Boy inside the man
When I turned twenty-five
We were hungry, we had drive
When I turned much older then
'Cause the boy was lost in pride
Now I just turned thirty-one
And I've lost and I have won
Still I've kept my dreams alive
'Cause the boy will never die
I dreamed that I saw her standing there
They're running for the boy inside the man
I was hit hard by the light so bright it burned
And all at once I knew she'd understand
Boy inside the man
Boy inside the man
I dreamed that I saw her standing there
They're running for the boy inside the man
I was hit hard by the light so bright, it burned
And all at once I knew she'd understand
Boy inside the man
Boy inside the man
Boy inside the man
Boy inside the man
