Hi. Just found your channel. I'm a native New Yorker moving to Tirana 11/22/24. Been there twice already and it reminds me of a mini NYC. Cost too much too live in US now. I've been to europe 5 times and will live out my life there. Hope to meet up soon. Mario
Cool, I recommend you to see breathtaking places in Albania, Albania is an ancient country with stunning landscapes and has a stunning history, hidden from Europe.
I left the US 6 yrs ago. I'll be 66 this winter. Most rents in the US were more than my SS income. Not listening to the constant political discord, shootings, racism, extreme cost of living is HUGE for ones mental health.
You have my full sympathy! My situation ist rather similar here in Berlin, Germany: 68yo, a monthly pension of 850 Euros, most rents are equal or even higher. Currently I live in with old friends or my seperated wife. Been to almost 80 countries during those cheap days during 70s, 80s and 90s, when working one month in Germany could pay for 6 months in India, including air fare. These days are over. 😮 Do you know a place where our retirement benefits are sufficient?
I was in Albania for three months in the Spring. Good experience and would return to live in spite of language barrier. Speaking Italian helps. I really like Elbasan to live. I also appreciate the Turkish influence. Albanians are kind and appreciate good manners.
girl, I am so happy for you & I love this!!!! I moved to Spain about 7 years ago; it was the best decision ever. Safe travels and I hope you enjoy Albania!!!
I love this! Albania has been on my radar for a while, so I’m thrilled to see this video. Thank you for highlighting awareness of the local situation and ways to support the community-it’s something that’s often overlooked. I’m excited to follow your experiences in Albania and hope to plan my own trip there someday!
I just spent three weeks traveling throughout Albania as part of a longer Balkans trip. The country blew me away! I was already thinking about it as a longer-term stay option, and now with the election results …
I was in England doing a 2 month house sit when Albania came on my husband's radar. He was looking at all these Albania videos made by a guy from Texas. He moved there 6 months ago. We are checking out Albania after our house sit in Mexico.
Some people are saying gen z in Europe are more conservative and right-wing then Americans but its mainly due to illegal immigrants destroying some European cities and way of life. So that makes sense. I’d still choose Europe over America due to better quality of life. I am also conservative myself so i got happy that a lot of young Europeans are also conservative
Won't it be nice NOT to have an opinion about politics but rather where to get a good cup of coffee... Hope you make the right choice for you and enjoy.

During my “let’s explore the Balkans” wanderlusting moment a hundred years ago (though not really, cause I’m not that old 😅) I visited Albania many times and learned the languages a bit though not well. I will say this though, share the countries beauty and culture, though when you happen upon a hidden gem keep that so secret. The country’s beaches were in a Lonely Planet list years ago and people from other European countries started flocking to them which stressed the infrastructure at the time. Learn about Besa, speak Albanian as often as you can, find friends, and be discerning if and when you decide to date (tell them you plan on staying in Albania forever and see if their interest is still there). Have fun! 🎉
We love Albania! We have visited three times (Tirana March, Durres June, Tirana November) in 2024 and always look here first to take holidays. We are two Americans who live in the Netherlands. Eindhoven Airport offers direct and cheap flights to Albania, so it's the perfect getaway spot for us. Our favorite pizza spot in Tirana is Pizza Seni. It's tucked away from the busy streets, but we love the people and atmosphere. It's definitely worth a visit! Enjoy Albania
You should visit Korça!! It’s beautiful, there’s good food also because that’s where I’m from 😭 But also u should visit Vlore it’s so beautiful there the oceans are so beautiful and it’s so so beautiful there

Oh absolutely, shop local, and avoid the big supermarkets where foreigners tend to go. We don’t buy our produce, bread and meats there generally. If it’s looking pretty and packed nicely, it costs double and it’s not even local or organic. Discover the farmers markets, that’s where the best cheeses, olives, fruits and vegetables are. And they are dirt cheap and so much tastier. Don’t make this foreign German and Italian supermarket chains richer, help that local farmer survive.
Oh too bad to hear, since the intense smoking everywhere in public areas and beaches is a big reason I can’t see myself living in Greece even though it’s one of my favorite countries.
Hello, so glad I found your channel, I’m a remote work planning my escape from the US and I really had my heart set on Thailand or Portugal but after seeing multiple videos of people exploring Albania I think my mind is made up! 😌
@deafheart23 when do you think you will go?? I am going to Thailand for a year but think Albania might seriously be my next stop! For all of the reasons in this video. Either Albania or Paraguay!
@@SEOshogun I was in Thailand last year. It's great but Albania is slightly cheaper and less visa issues. Thailand has increased in housing due to tourism coming back and making up for what they lost during the pandemic.
$1 USD got 106 Albanian Lek in December of 2022, on my first stint there. Now it's at around 93 Lek to $1. Rent prices have also increased a lot in just the past two years and will continue to go up. Renters must also fork over 3.5 months up front to move in. That's a lot considering that landlords in Albania can be unscrupulous and there's no guarantee at all that a renter wouldn't have all kinds of drama with their landlord. That said, the food is good in Albania and it's still cheaper, for the time being, than major metro areas in the U.S.
Thank you so much for sharing your relocation journey with us! Are you in the capital city of Albania and would you say it’s a safe place to live? Low crime rate? Political unrest? Lastly, I would love to know more about working as a travel/digital creator or working remotely.
I'm an Albanian who lives abroad. I have visited a lot of cities in Europe and I can really say that Albania is the safest country I have ever gone to. This is because there is a strong sense of community. I cannot leave my car unattended in the middle of Berlin because someone will scratch it, hit and run, steal my wheels or worse. In Tirana, this never happens. The only downside is high car traffic tho.

Thanks for this video. I believe a black guy was attacked in Greece a few years ago which really turned off a lots black travelers, when I saw how close Albania was to Greece I was like Oh no!
Thank you for your channel Abigail. Your informative vlog about not damaging Albanian economy by over-paying is very helpful. My husband and I just retired and are coming to Tirana in January. We look forward to really spending time touring around Albania and the surrounding countries and the EU. We aren't interested in living in a palace as our budget is fixed. Just a regular life amongst friendly people.
Taxes are really high tho… on groceries too. Right now, due to prices being relatively low, life is affordable. But I don’t think it will last long… within the next 2-3 years life will get quite expensive.
What a great video! I really appreciated the fact that you informed us how to support the local culture. I moved to Mexico for years ago and I'm now thinking about Eastern Europe. Thank you for your work!
This is awesome! We are planning to move to Europe asap. Would love to hear about the visa process or lack thereof for the year stay in Albania! Can’t wait for more videos.
There is no visa process. By having a US passport, qualifies you for a one year visa free stay. If you want another year, you'll have to leave Albania for 90 days. Upon returning to Albania after your 90 day exit, you'll have another visa free year.
I’m looking to Albania too! I’m going to travel around UK and EU first but then settle in Albania for the year under my U.S. passport. I want to be in Europe on coast that’s affordable. I read their history and it’s very interesting. Didn’t know it was more Muslim but a secular country which I love that it’s secular and the religions live in peace with each other.
I took moved to Albania during pandemic. I was shocked that no one wore mask and life went on. I was so relived after being in lockdown in the USA. The quality of life here 1000x better than USA . Am happier and healthier, the food is so amazing. The people are the warmest I all Europe. This is home now. Congrats that you found Albania.
You are very sweet. Best of luck, also thanks about the explanation on Portugal. If I knew about many more things, to include tax issues I wouldn't have moved there...but that's ok, live and learn. How will you be renewing your visa? On a yearly base? Also where do you recommend we look for remote jobs? Thanks again and best of luck in Albania and in your work!

Albania is at the top for expediency, and I like the Visa on Arrival. I'm a seasoned woman whose done some traveling and long ago I lived outside the country twice, so I'm not too intimidated. I love Europe. My first questions are can I bring my little Chihuahua dog, Nui, who is 8 pounds? Will it make it hard to get a rental? I'll do a lot of research but your help, would help. Guess that's it for now but I'd have no problem helping promote them the place, I know people all over the country considering their escape route.

Hey girl ! Thank you for video! Vey informative. I am from the UK and coming to Tirana next Sunday for few days ! Any recommendations would be appreciated
Great tips regarding "how to support Albania" - I can relate to "outsiders over-paying" - currently I live in Nevada; we have been deluged with folks moving out of California and into our State, driving prices too high for locals to afford. Now I see 2-3 families living on one property; most in the house, but also in RV's or campers parked outside.. this is illegal, but authorities don't enforce it unless someone complains. Folks rarely complain, because we know this is because of the high housing prices - and there are homeless people EVERYWHERE in the U.S.
WOW! Great info. I too was planning on retiring to Portugal, but now they are going to tax soc.sec. and you are right, it's getting expensive there, so now I'm planning a trip in 2025 to Albania instead of Portugal again. I would like to find some kind of Free-Lancing other than writing/editing...any suggestions? I will be following you. Thanx, Lilly R.
Please do go into the freelance aspect. I am trying to come that way. I agree wholeheartedly with how important it is to support the community you are coming to, and as a social worker, it is extremely important to me.
Something I've heard a few other travel channels talk about is the smoking. Specifically in Tiranna and Durres. Cafe's being overrun and even walking by they felt like they had to hold their breath. Did you find the same issue with smoking? If so, is it ubiquitous across Albania or are some cities or parts of cities worse than others? I realize you just got to Tirana, so you might not be able to answer about the other cities if you haven't had a chance to get there yet. But if you have any experience thus far, I'd love to know.

I know I kept gasping every time she moved.
Helooo from boring California, I’m Armenian I live in California more the 30 years, and never call home,America is the best country to work make many ,America after a lot compared to many many countries in the world, but America doesn’t have a vibe there’s no life there’s only people working not leaving and pay the high price for house ,tax ,utilities, insurance, the gas,so that good money, you work, one hand, another hand you give it back, dear Abigailhow is Albanian health plans , house prices, can Us citizens by house ,and best country side to live in Albania, thanks for great ℹ️ information hope you enjoy living Albania 🇦🇱
@@yankeesfanadventures6174 that’s what I thought this last time when I went to Tirana, it became busy and alive like a mini NYC
I found out about this channel as of November 17th 2024.
I left the US 6 yrs ago. I'll be 66 this winter. Most rents in the US were more than my SS income. Not listening to the constant political discord, shootings, racism, extreme cost of living is HUGE for ones mental health.
Great for you❤️Where did you move?
So you must have to move every few months, right?
Starting the research
Taught myself 7 languages, and still haven't left the Country. I've only been to another Country while on a Cruise earlier this Summer
girl, I am so happy for you & I love this!!!!
Ha! Same. I'm moving there next month :)
Won't it be nice NOT to have an opinion about politics but rather where to get a good cup of coffee... Hope you make the right choice for you and enjoy.
@@candyfields535Hi Hello whats that texas guys channel called?

Hope you have a great live, greetings from an kosovar albanian person👍
Welcome to Albania, ure part of us have funn and exploree
Have fun! 🎉
I have lived in South America for many years. Want something new and had considered checking out Albania. Thanks for the information.
Enjoy Albania
good to know!
You should visit Korça!! It’s beautiful, there’s good food also because that’s where I’m from 😭 But also u should visit Vlore it’s so beautiful there the oceans are so beautiful and it’s so so beautiful there
Glad to see more black Americans going out and exploring the world and letting the world see us.
Thank you for this video! I'm about to head back to Canada but am planning to head back to Europe for as long as I can. Albania has been at the top of my list and now I'm going to start researching more. ❤
I currently live in Poland and the temporary residence permit wait is so long! I've been waiting a year to hear anything from them, so you definitely made a good decision by just living in Albania.
I'm so sorry that sounds awful, I hope it get settled soon !
You are brave and inspiring. I hope you love Albania
Congratulations on finding your own little piece of paradise! I left NYC for Vienna, Austria over 20 years ago and I'm LOVING every second of it! You're absolutely right, the US has become unlivable and many Americans don't seem aware that there's a higher quality of life outside the US. I look forward to accompanying you on your journey...
I was looking at Albanian too, but I had some questions about the trains and the connection to the rest of Europe. So I started looking at Bulgaria.. originally like you i was looking at Portugal then switched to Spain.. but I want to live below my means so I can travel too. I live off my disabled Veteran pay. Glad I found your channel. Good luck 🙌
This is my plan too. ❤ I’m assuming va benefits will stay the same even if you’re in another country ?
@aubreylynn8751 they are supposed to.. technically we should be able to get them on the moon. I think we still get them even if we become a citizen of another country.
Please can you discuss:
1. How to research long stay rentals and estate agents recommendations
2. Getting around the city by public and taxis.
3. Is there Amazon?
4. Opening a bank account
5. Night life
Thank you
Hi Lady,
I would love any information on moving to Albania and the travel money making work.
Albanian here i live in the NY rentals work online just find a realtor
Public transport isent any good theres buses and taxis but other than that railway is only for goods
No there is no amazon whats worse is if you try to buy somthing online the tax is like as much as the package itself
Opening bank account id go with opening one in germany then using that in albania
Nightlife is we have nightclubs but usually everyone sticks to theyre own social groups its not like i uaa
@@THEPRESSTV Except, if you decide to stay in Albania, one of the requirements for a residence permit is having an Albanian bank account.
I totally agree! I love supporting local businesses.
Welcome to Albania! Albanians love Americans , you will feel like you are home and I’m sure you will live here for a long time! Enjoy it ❤
We were in Tirana in October and loved it (too much smoking!) we also love Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia
Oh too bad to hear, since the intense smoking everywhere in public areas and beaches is a big reason I can’t see myself living in Greece even though it’s one of my favorite countries.
Love Albania. Very walkable and proximity for international travel is great
Welcome to my country, and enjoy it.
Hello, so glad I found your channel, I’m a remote work planning my escape from the US and I really had my heart set on Thailand or Portugal but after seeing multiple videos of people exploring Albania I think my mind is made up! 😌
Thanks for watching 💕
@deafheart23 when do you think you will go?? I am going to Thailand for a year but think Albania might seriously be my next stop! For all of the reasons in this video. Either Albania or Paraguay!
Hi, does your company allow work/live anywhere? I’m looking for opportunities like that to relocate. Any information is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
@@SEOshogun I was in Thailand last year. It's great but Albania is slightly cheaper and less visa issues. Thailand has increased in housing due to tourism coming back and making up for what they lost during the pandemic.
What do you do for work?
$1 USD got 106 Albanian Lek in December of 2022, on my first stint there. Now it's at around 93 Lek to $1. Rent prices have also increased a lot in just the past two years and will continue to go up. Renters must also fork over 3.5 months up front to move in. That's a lot considering that landlords in Albania can be unscrupulous and there's no guarantee at all that a renter wouldn't have all kinds of drama with their landlord. That said, the food is good in Albania and it's still cheaper, for the time being, than major metro areas in the U.S.
Just in time! Thank you for this! 🎉
You're so welcome!
@theladywhotravels 🤗
Wow now i have to visit Albania!! Thank you for this video, you leaving the US is admirable and you got a new subscriber!
You are very smart women
That was my experience, exactly, after visiting Eastern Europe: huge increase in quality of life
Meanwhile eastern Europeans leaving eastern Europe, how sad right?
New Subscriber! Loved the video. ❤ Looking forward to following your journey.
Welcome to Albania, welcome home.
Mireserdhe.
god bless the youtube algorithm, keep up the content diva 😘
Commenting on said topic(s) helps.
I love this! Wishing you the best. ❤
you seem like the most considerate, thoughtful expat. i will definitely be taking your words into consideration in a few years when i make my way to europe finally. i want to get PSLF before i move.
Sister...you have to move where your spirit moves you!! Never ...ever..move somewhere just because everybody else is moving there...go where you all loved...go where you have your peace...happy to see my sisters moving just because they want better options for living life...I'm a new subscriber...I will be watching your journey
u have such a nice voice to listing to! enjoy your new life gal!
Hello Abigail and thank you for sharing this information. It was very insightful as we are considering Montenegro, Albania and a few other countries in the EU for the very reasons you mentioned. When you have time can you please expound on ways to have a steady income as an expat please.
Thank You and enjoy Albania 🙂
Thank you. I just liked and subscribed. Look forward to your future adventures.
as a solo travela who relocated to Colombia this year, you go girl‼️ this video hit every question a curious traveler or tentative civilian may have ❤
Thank you for sharing your experience 🎉.
It's still warm in the south this time of the year! I took at dip in Ksamil on December 2020, so you can totally enjoy the beaches! Less tourists now too 😉 I miss Albania 🫶
Awe you are adorable! You just did it!
I want to live in another country, but I am scared. I have a house and I am retired and set in a very secure routine.
But I think I would love Albania! Thanks for this video.
I believe a black guy was attacked in Greece a few years ago which really turned off a lots black travelers, when I saw how close Albania was to Greece I was like Oh no!
Yeah, nothing about the elephant in the room. Places like this and Eastern Europe concern me with the lack of diversity.
@@cherylparker1448 That sounds very close minded. Eastern Europe is overflowing with diversity! Certainly not the lack of it.
@@saml849 Thank you!! 🙌🏻
Thank you for the nice words!
In Albania we value liberty and as you can see, you have much more freedom compared to other countries.
Wow,
This is such good stuff.
I love how intentional you were about unmovable needs.
Its great to hear about your intents to fit well economically also.
Subscribed and looking forward to more!
Congratulations on your new home! ❤ Here’s a question for you to discus; what do you do about your hair products?
Brought some over but I found a lady who sells shea moisture, and a lot of black hair care brands
Wow. I'm a 29 year old black British guy and I travelled solo to Albania for two month long stays in January 2022 and December 2022, I had a very pleasant experience in Albania, and I met my (now ex) boyfriend in Durres. Lots of great memories. I'll never forget the burek! The best burek shop in Albania is in Durres :D
Now it’s November 17th 2024.
@ thanks for reminding me!
Yes please, would love to learn more about your remote working while travelling.
Same here.
Congratulations on your move. Your video was very inspiring.
this is a great video with incredible information -- thank you
So glad I stumbled on your video- what a great intro!! I have been looking to travel and possibly retire in Albania or Italy. Although I have never been there, it checks many of my boxes. I wish you well!!
I'm definitely thinking of a backup plan. Have you been to Montenegro? What was it like? Great video.
Love from Albania
Great video! So much positivity and thoughtful insight.
Soooooo inspirational
Love this video and your mindset 💖. I leave in France and want to visit Albania and want a major change in my life also but the reverse as yours going to North America wishing you the best 🙊💖
What a very unique story ! Best wishes !!
Albania is beautiful! 🇦🇱 Hope you enjoy living there ❤
Thank you. Do you have insight into medical coverage/quality/costs?
Just did a video on IG/TT, $33 dental cleaning!
New subscriber here! this was my 1st video, and I do have questions. I'm also looking for a new country and right now it's a short list. I'm a very youthful senior, so for now I get social security, but I think the far right wants to crush that. I'm also a Photographer/Digital Artist, so I'd want to work. I'll do a lot of research but your help, would help. Guess that's it for now but I'd have no problem helping promote them the place, I know people all over the country considering their escape route.
Welcome to your new home
How is the healthcare services? What happens after a year can you easily renew?
Horrible
Great video. Albania has a lot of promise and opportunity. The Albanian language is really obscure and different, but not because of communism - that happened much later. Keep up the good work!
Where do you find cheap housing? May I ask which app you use?
That sounds amazing! So happy for you!
How are you able to get things done with the language barrier in all the countries you’ve visited?
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing. As an american I love my country, but we aren't without our issues. The polarized politics.... I have been wanting to get some international trips on the schedule to see how other coutries function. More in depth on the financial aspect would be great. 😊
hey!!!! we are moving to albania too!! such a beautiful place :) maybe we'll get to meet up at some point :)
Albania is so beautiful, I hope you love it!
Oh my god😲 How is this video not viral yet?!?!?!? its so interesting and well done👏
Thank you so much

I stumbled across your video. I’m currently trying to make a blaxit plan and I would love to hear more ideas to support yourself abroad. Thanks so much for this video ❤
Thank you for sure. Best of wishes to you! Enjoy!
Yes, ideas on what to do for work while traveling? Thanks!!
Hey girl ! Thank you for video! Vey informative. I am from the UK and coming to Tirana next Sunday for few days ! Any recommendations would be appreciated
Awesome video. Albania has been on my list to visit and so glad I found your channel. I will definitely tune in for your adventures.
Congrats on the move! Same sentiments when I left the Philippines to return to Europe 😍
Why did you leave the Philippines?
Great tips regarding "how to support Albania" - I can relate to "outsiders over-paying" - currently I live in Nevada; we have been deluged with folks moving out of California and into our State, driving prices too high for locals to afford. Now I see 2-3 families living on one property; most in the house, but also in RV's or campers parked outside.. this is illegal, but authorities don't enforce it unless someone complains. Folks rarely complain, because we know this is because of the high housing prices - and there are homeless people EVERYWHERE in the U.S.
Thank you for this video.
WOW!
Very smart!!! I’m glad you’re living the life!!!!🎉
Yes! Please make content on how to get freelance clients and make money on the road
Enjoy ❤
Something I've heard a few other travel channels talk about is the smoking. Specifically in Tiranna and Durres. Cafe's being overrun and even walking by they felt like they had to hold their breath. Did you find the same issue with smoking? If so, is it ubiquitous across Albania or are some cities or parts of cities worse than others? I realize you just got to Tirana, so you might not be able to answer about the other cities if you haven't had a chance to get there yet. But if you have any experience thus far, I'd love to know.
Europeans don't shirk from smoking nor do they care if their smoking bothers others. In addition, smoking is rampant all over Europe.
Can't wait to visit☺️🙏
God bless I and your travels …what a great life thx u for the info
