  • Honey Boy: Shia LaBeouf, Noah Jupe, Alma Har'el, Byron Bowers Interview
Let me start off by saying how much I loved director Alma Har'el’s Honey Boy. The fantastic film was written by Shia LaBeouf and the semi-autobiographical drama pulls no punches as he draws back the curtain on his childhood in Hollywood and his complicated relationship with his father (who LaBeouf plays in the film), told across different time periods. One part sees Lucas Hedges playing a character named Otis Lort (it’s clearly LaBeouf), who has landed in rehab after a traffic accident. The other part has Noah Jupe playing the younger Otis when he’s working on an unnamed TV show (it’s most likely Even Stevens) and living with his abusive father (LaBeouf), who is also his acting coach. One of the many reasons why I loved the film is Har’el’s feature narrative debut always feels authentic and every performance is pitch-perfect. I can’t recommend this movie enough.
A few days ago at a Los Angeles hotel, I sat down with Shia LaBeouf, Alma Har'el, Byron Bowers, and Noah Jupe for an exclusive interview. Usually, when you talk to a large group it can be difficult to keep everyone engaged in the conversation, but it was clear right from the start that they all loved working with each other and share a special bond. They talked about fun moments from filming, how they prepared for their roles, how difficult was it for LaBeouf to tell his story, what it was like for him to play his father, what they were most concerned about with the limitations of a 20-day shoot, and so much more.
If you’re curious how Honey Boy was made or just want to watch a really fun interview, you’ll enjoy this conversation. Check out what they had to say in the player above and below is what we talked about.

if you like Noah then check out The Night Manager; an adaptation to the John Le Carre book. Think it was the first 'big' production he was in... His character is not central to the plot, but nevertheless The Night Manager is so so good that it's worth mentioning. [Must have Amazon Prime though].

Alma’s absolutely correct, trauma never happens like... as it happens? i didn’t know i was traumatized until i went to therapy and Alma does such a good job at displaying that dynamic and how it feels to be abused and especially processing that idea. Shia putting his life out there and having to re-live it, especially as his father that’s such an incredible feat and it’s so wildly impressive that he didn’t break down. You can also see just how he connects with Noah, on and off screen, and how he respects Noah’s dedication to his craft. It’s so incredible. And Byron does such a good job at weaving himself into that dynamic as not being part of the family dynamic which is hard to navigate in real life so i can only imagine how difficult it is in film. A honest thank you to everyone involved this film is a masterpiece and it’s worth so much to me.

Noah gave an amazing performance in Honey Boy. His emotions just came through so easily that I was constantly moved. However, I wish so much that he had that deeper raspy voice that Shia had in his Stevens days. I know he can’t help it, but his high pitched voice made him seem younger (like 10-11).

Shia's speaking voice that time wasnt as pitchy-high as Even stevens..that was him stay in character, along with that nostril. I remember his early interviews on disney, he had normal pre-teen voice. If you watch Project Greenlight season 2, his speaking voice also normal. I believe he used different pitch for acting purposes. But I do agree Noah should impersonate Loius Stevens in some of Even stevens shooting scene.

I relate to Shia with his story in a parallel way. I've lived what he lived with his father. Exploitation, grief, being the parent, parenting the parent, losing childhood, wanting to see your parent step up and be one... waiting for it. As an adult now I still wait, though I love her very much I come to terms that she will never be what I want but... I still wait. I don't tell my family much about her, they know a bit of what she's like from what they see but I can't bear to paint her badly with the people she calls family. "Just make me look good", Ma, I'm tryin'. Only children are aliens, but only and alone make you one hell of a misunderstood child-adult. Oh, Shia. I feels.

Love this so much, and I love everything about Shia, including his sincerity. This interview was great-I definitely think it was overlooked how incredibly Lucas played adult Otis / Shia going through his breakdown and recovery process (and maybe just overlooked for timing purposes). Even though they look almost nothing alike, he portrayed his antics, almost frantic speaking style, his nervous tics, his internal explosions so beautifully that you would’ve thought it WAS Shia. This was such an incredible film, it literally rips your heart out-and it’s my opinion that it especially speaks to the soul of any emotionally abused child who is now an adult who also very much loved their parent/s and just wanted their love and affection in return. CATHARTIC is what this movie is, for Shia, for us... Shia taught me that word in an interview long ago, and it keeps coming back to me with this film. I love that man.

this is dumb but I love where Shia says Noah was beautiful in the car smashing scene at 11:55 because he really is such a beautiful boy, and the scene he's talking about he really is so beautiful in it

If you like Noah Jupe, check out the adaptation to John Le Carre's book entitled THE NIGHT MANAGER. It's on Amazon Prime and is one of the best shows I've seen in years. It is also the first big production Noah was in, [albeit his character is not central to the plot].

This interview has piqued my interest in this film, now. Way to go Honey Boy and especially Shia LaB eouf for carrying it brilliantly and yet with so much humility 💙

Why was the director not comfortable saying that the movie was rewritten in some parts? Even shia's dad recently said in an interview that the script that he saw was changed just like shia said in this interview.

Blake Flexin Right? He’s soo freaking dry and non-empathetic. He’s a Method interviewer so I doubt anyone wanted to be there after that point. From Shia’s face afterwards the energy shifted. So pretentious.

really bugs me how shia answered his question about how they found their chemistry with a long in-depth answer just for the interviewer to say “sure.”

      Same!
Also, there was no need to constantly cut back to the interviewer's reactions to the answers being given.
