The Hooters are an amazing band with a unique sound. Their hit album “Nervous Night” spawned several singles, including “And We Danced”, that featured on the Top 40 charts as well as had several videos that were in heavy rotation during MTV’s heyday. Several Hooters fun facts: came out of the rich Philly music scene, are still together to this day, are HUGE in Japan and their lead keyboardist and one of the founding members, Rob Hyman, wrote the song “Time After Time”, which Cyndi Lauper took and turned into a Number One hit single. Love The Hooters!
I loved The Hooters in the 80's. Finally going to get a chance to see them live on a fun 80's tour with Rick Springfield and Tommy Tutone. There are even more great songs from them to react to.
Yep, great live band too...plus Rick is awesome (new album Automatic with 20 songs out on August 4) & Tommy Tutone are an underrated powerpop band, I'd go myself!!
That instrument is called a melodica. It's an acoustic instrument that integrates elements of woodwinds and organs, not unlike the accordion or harmonica. It's mostly used in Dub Reggae, but in the 80s it was also used in lots of Pop/Rock and even Synthpop (New Order and Depeche Mode used it in a few songs each). In the intro, break, and outro it is played alongside a mandolin. The Hooters were great. They were one of many Heartland Rock acts (Springsteen, Petty, Seger, Hornsby, etc) on the radio during the 80s singing about nostalgia for decades gone by and teenage love. Fun fact, two years earlier, they were also the backing band on Cyndi Lauper's HUMONGOUS hit LP She's So Unusual, which featured the hits "Time After Time", "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", "Money Changes Everything", and "She-Bop" (plus her amazing cover of Prince's "When U Were Mine"). They didn't have a ton of huge hits, but their follow-up single to "And We Danced" (1985/US#21) was "Day by Day" (1986/US#18) and charted even higher, becoming their only US Top20 hit.
As a high school grad in 1985 I can tell you, without a doubt, It was an amazing time to be alive as a teenager. The feeling you get when hearing these kinds of songs. It was exactly that! Its so hard to put into words but the music nails it perfectly. We knew it even back then. It was a very special time.
Oh, this song......such a memory. My husband was a musician with a rock band....my friend Rena's boyfriend was a member of that band. Rena & I went with the band everytime they played. Rena & I would dance almost the entire night together. One night we danced so much & so hard that we were soaking wet with sweat. The next night, Rena was murdered by a heroin addict who broke into her apartment while she was there. About a month later, this song came out. Whenever i hear it, I always have a good cry, then remember the awesome memory of dancing with her, and I dedicate it to her. Love you, Rena.
A melodica, also known as the pianica, is a sort of harmonica-keyboard hybrid where you blow air into it through a mouthpiece and, like an organ, pressing a key opens a hole and creates a note by making the reeds inside vibrate.
The Hooters were an amazing, fun, down to earth band. I remember my under age self seeing them at clubs around Philly. The Exton Drive-in was a few minutes from my college, now West Chester University, where I worked on the Program Board booking and supporting concerts, guest speakers, lecture series. We’d done a particularly good job on a concert event, the local promoter gifted our team a beach party starring The Hooters. They were huge in the area club scene. Great memories.
One of my favorite songs! In my mind I always pair it up with "Come Dancing" by the Kinks. They both sing about dancing, evoke nostalgia, and feature some unconventional rock music. And they're both such a joy to listen and bop to!
One of my favourite tracks of all time! The Hooters are an awesome band. "Why can't we have music like this any more?" Exactly. If anybody from a music company watches reaction videos, you should be listening to comments like this. That's why there are far more sales of historic music than up-to-date tracks. People want to listen to decent music in which the band really can play their instruments, don't have to be autotuned and don't build tracks pieced together from a hundred takes. That takes talent, musicianship, song writing skills and stagecraft. The Hooters have all that.
Philadelphia's own! I grew up halfway between NYC and Philly, so I listened to radio stations from both cities. The Hooters were REALLY big in Philly and New Jersey.
I will never not love the transition from the melodica to the electric guitar at 1:52. Ever. It’s the musical equivalent to hitting the Turbo button on a Colonial Viper takeoff from Battlestar Galactica. 🚀
From the city that brought you Hall & Oates in 1970 - Philadelphia - brought us The Hooters in 1980 and they broke through with a handful of hits 1985 and 1986. Oh and of course Poison launched two hours west in Mechanicsburg, PA, ( near Harrisburg the state Capitol) in 1983. And in between the two cities the band Live (Lightning Crashes -1995) began in 1984 in York, PA. Southeastern Pennsylvania an unheralded hotbed for rock. Hair band Cinderella - Philly suburbs. Jim Croce - Philly active 1964-1973. And oh, Taylor Swift - West Reading, PA.
Love these guys. Lived in Delaware as a kid in Newark where the university of DE is located. These guys played several weekends each month in the early 80's. Rob Hyman wrote Time after Time that became a Cyndi Lauper hit.
Very lucky! I only saw them live 2 times. I met them at Live Aid in Philly before the album broke. I later saw them on their "Nervous Night" tour. We wanted them to play our university Spring Fling in '86. It was a toss up between them and The Outfield. Crowded House was also wanted, but The Outfield being foreign bands, were too expensive. Hooters weren't available. The Hooters were blasting from dorm rooms and Apts around campus. I have them permanently on my playlists because "Nervous Night" is flawless.
The 1980s were so optimistic. America may never be as optimistic and looking forward to the future as it was in the 80s and this song/video is an example of that optimism.
Jay, you always speak about the fact that people/teens were dancing in the 80’s and yes we were. Many of our parents were teens in the 50’s and that’s what they did as well. The 50’s had a great influence on the 80’s as far as dress (Levi’s, penny loafer shoes, collars up) just look at John Cougar. In my state the drinking age has always been 21, so there were “under 21” clubs that we could go to and dance the night away.
Btw that instrument is a Mandolin. Diamond Rio who you reacted to yesterday is well known to have it featured in most of their songs. Soooo I remember like it was yesterday. They were an unknown band who SOMEHOW got on the lineup at the Biggest LIVE Concert event in history in the Summer of 85 ... LIVE AID. It's where famously Queen is said to have the greatest live performance of all time. Anyway ... The Hooters got exposure and became pretty big right after because of it with 2 big hits. This being one of them.
This is one of those songs that still holds up 40ish years later. It rocks just as hard now but also gives that nostalgic vibe. It’s one that I never skip over when it comes up. My other favorite by them is “Day By Day”, would love to see a reaction to that one.
I was in Germany at the time (Army), and both the Army stations and the German stations were playing Hooters music like crazy. So they went beyond Philly.
GREAT 80s TUNE!! So nostalgic!! In case you were wondering about the beginning....THAT brought back memories, too! You had to pay for each person in a car to get into the drive-in movies....so, we'd put people in the trunk to "sneak 'em in"!!! SO NAUGHTY - and, SO FUN!!! HUGS TO YOU-GUYS!! j* 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Yet another "GREAT" song from my senior year of high school. I cannot believe it only made it to #21 on the Billboard Top 100. The instrument at the beginning is called a "melodica". We had some GREAT music all over the different genre's in the middle 80's. Living most of that time frame as an American military brat less than 100 miles from the Iron Curtain, we felt that the world "on the brink" was beginning to change for the better. Just a few, short, years I ater, the Iron Curtain and the Warsaw Pact collapsed... Truly a wonderous time to be a youngster...
I saw them in the mid 80's when they opened for Loverboy. They blew Loverboy out of the water and put on one of the best concerts I've ever seen. I already liked their music, but I became a true fan after that. All You Zombies and Karla With a K are great tunes to check out as well.
Catchy as hell and the bonus is it's a hilarious satire on televangelists with a fun controversial video to match...it was their 1 hit in the UK, did it on Top of the Pops...
Very nice, Amber yes. The 80s was a romp. We just had fun. Yes, there were folks who were into street pharmaceuticals (always), but for the rest of us it was music, fashion, dancing...that's pretty much it.
I was at that drive-in for this video! There was an "open call" for people to show up and be part of it. The Hooters are totally underrated! They were totally amazing! I saw them several times before they got their first record deal. One of the many bands playing clubs around the Philadelphia area. The recording of this video took HOURS. But it was such a great time that almost everyone stayed the entire time. And more people kept showing up. And no, neither my friends nor I made it into the video. We weren't trying to be (jean jackets or army jackets with flannel shirts types) but it was a complete BLAST!!! Thanks for finally hitting the Hooters. Great reaction.
They still play today, and i see them in concert every year. Such a fun great band from my hometown. Hope you do more songs from them. They helped Cyndi Lauper and wrote Time after Time for her and they wrote One of Us for Joan Osbourne.
Rob Hyman wrote "Time After Time" with Cyndi Lauper. The band didn't write it for her. It was co-written by her and Rob. And Eric Bazillion wrote "One Of Us". Just thought you'd like to know.😊🙏💖🍀 *I edited my comment because I wanted to add an extra sentence.

It was an awesome decade of music for sure. I enjoyed your reaction! ☮ and 💕

Hey Jay, that instrument is called a Meladaka, but it has other names as well. Love the Hooters! Need to play "Day By Day" or "All You Zombies" from them. I remember summers at the Drive-In as a teen and we would stuff people in the trunk to sneak in because the theater would charge by person. Gotta save some money for the popcorn, Right?😂
The weird looking instrument is a HOOTER!! They were a Philadelphia group in the 80's, and took their name from that instrument. They were voted Band of the Year, had a few hits, but their biggest success was writing "Time After Time" which Cyndi Lauper made HUGE!
Back in 1988 my cousin and I moved into an apartment together, I had about 100 cassettes and he had about 300. The Hooters Nervous Night was the ONLY cassette we both had.
The instrument he was blowing into is called a hooter.(official name Melodica) it's harmonica and keyboard together.
inspiration for their name iirc
It's a great way for a keyboard player to play harmonica parts for, say, Stevie Wonder songs, without having to learn the chromatic harmonica.
Hence, the band referred to as 'the Hooters"! I believe this was the tale end of the 1980s... if I remember correctly, late 1987, at the earliest.
I know I've seen Billy Preston play that before.

Born in 71, so I was a teen in the 80's and got to listen to these tunes when they were brand new and on the radio.
This song was HUGE in 1985 when I was in 10th grade. Such a fun song!
One of my favorite songs! In my mind I always pair it up with "Come Dancing" by the Kinks. They both sing about dancing, evoke nostalgia, and feature some unconventional rock music. And they're both such a joy to listen and bop to!
They reacted to Come Dancing if you've not seen it.
@@robertlanier2235 I have, thanks!
Ahhhhhhh That takes me back!!!! I loved this song when it came on the radio. Thank you so much!!!!!!!
The cool instrument is a Hohner Medlodica.......They called it a "Hooter" hence the name of the band
The epitome of heartland rock, an opening with mandolin and Melodica, then power chords and a synth riff, and it all blends together.
"That" is a Hooter! 😂 love your reaction. The Hooter's are from my hometown, Philadelphia PA. Take a deep dive into this rabbit hole.
I freaking LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. Dancing was everything in the 80's and this song embodies that! ✨
Philadelphia's own! I grew up halfway between NYC and Philly, so I listened to radio stations from both cities. The Hooters were REALLY big in Philly and New Jersey.
Day By Day was my fav.
Top 5 of the 80s.
Best decade ever.
love this song! My wife was almost crying. She was an 80's girl, now married 33+ with a 30 yr. old daughter, and a granddaughter
You two have been taking me through memory lane lately. Thank you for bringing me so many smiles and re-living so many songs of my younger years!!!
I just saw them live last night in Sterling Heights, Michigan. They sounded great and put on a wonderful show.
I graduated from UD in 1998.
My ex-wife and I saw them at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis in 1986. They were the warmup band for Heart.
Being from Central Jersey, these guys were very big locally.
Hello from Lambertville!
Was a senior in high school and man how we danced to this song. Miss the 80’s when music was happy and about love.
YAY! A Hooters reaction! This whole album was very unique and cool.
So was the album after this one. I may like it even better.
The 1980s were so optimistic. America may never be as optimistic and looking forward to the future as it was in the 80s and this song/video is an example of that optimism.
This was one of my favorite dance songs in the mid 80s. Always loved it. So catchy and you can really move to this on the floor....
This was filmed right outside Philly. The only reason I wasn’t there was I was pregnant. They opened up Live Aid here in Philly. ✌️❤️🎶
I grew up in South Jersey, where was this video filmed?
@@chrisolivo6591 the Exton Drive In in Exton, Pa.
@@dianedavies8291No shit. That's right around the corner from me. Never knew Exton used to have a drive-in.
We do still have music like that. The Hooters are still touring and making new music after over 40 years. The make Philly proud.
To answer your question, Jay:
That instrument is called a Melodica, it's often referred to as "A Hooter", hence the name of the band
This is one of those songs that still holds up 40ish years later. It rocks just as hard now but also gives that nostalgic vibe. It’s one that I never skip over when it comes up. My other favorite by them is “Day By Day”, would love to see a reaction to that one.
That instrument is called a Melodica. Reggae artist Augustus Pablo used it a LOT in his music!
That breath-powered keyboard/harmonica is called a MELODICA.
I turned 60 today. I love the 80s. We had the best music and songs like this one sure bring back great memories
Happy Birthday Shirley 🥳🥳🥳
@@juliewhite7469 thank you 😊
You need to check out WHERE DO THE CHILDREN GO. Patty Smyth is guest background vocalist. Really thought provoking song
That song always brings tears in my eyes, but in a good way.
Plus “All You Zombies “
This song was everywhere when I was young!! The Hooters were a local Philly-area band so every station played any song they released.
I was in Germany at the time (Army), and both the Army stations and the German stations were playing Hooters music like crazy. So they went beyond Philly.
Omg...I had forgotten all about this group and I even remember the words...wow the great memories!!!
„All you zombies“, „Satellite“, „Karla with a K.“, „500 Miles“… You got a lot to react now.😉
GREAT 80s TUNE!! HUGS TO YOU-GUYS!! j* 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Wow, never knew that, thought the guy in the trunk was kidnapped!!
This song still slaps. Totally loved your review!
100% one of the best tunes of the 80s. Never fails to make me happy
The instrument you were looking at is called a melodica. It also has a nickname: a hooter. That instrument is what gave the group its name.
AAAMEN!! Just like I've always said, the new music just doesn't hold a candle to the old music!!!
Met them at a small club in New Hampshire in 1984 when they were just starting out. Fun High School memory.
I saw them in the mid 80's when they opened for Loverboy. They blew Loverboy out of the water and put on one of the best concerts I've ever seen. I already liked their music, but I became a true fan after that. All You Zombies and Karla With a K are great tunes to check out as well.
Their song "Satellite" is another good one. It has this whole Celtic/80's synth thing going on, that you can't help but dance to.
They were so under-rated. They were fabulous in concert. If you want another great song, try "Where Do The Children Go"
Not were. Saw them 2 nights ago. Only a 10 song set, but they were fantastic.
Great stuff “Day by day” “all you zombies “ “Karla with a k”…all great Hooters songs!
Saw them with Loverboy at the Roundhouse in Chattanooga, TN … sometime in the 80s. Both were great live.
That was one hell of a band back in the day. Great concerts! That thing is a “Hooter.” A melodica.
I was in the service when this song came out and I was stationed in SoCal. It was a happier time with happier music.
Such a feel good song! Always turns a bad day to so much better! Thanks for picking this
For me there are just some songs that really bring back memories of my childhood. This is one of those songs. And yes I did dance to this as a kid.
@@frauleinmonathe key is that the Hooters were the backup band on Cyndi's big album She's So Unusual, so it was total collaboration...which is why that album was so good...
@@lawrencedavis4406 Yes, but the op said that The Hooters wrote "Time After Time" for Cyndi Lauper and they didn't. Rob Hyman and her wrote it together.😊 And yes, I know that Rick Chertoff The Hooters producer and Eric Bazilion played on her debut album 'She's So Unusual'.👌
@@frauleinmona correct, you & both know the truth, the op had it wrong...
FINALLY!!!! Lol....I have asked about The Hooters for years....One of the most underrated bands of th 80's...try a Day By Day, Private Emotions, Where Do The Children Go (with Patti Symth)....you can't go wrong!!!!
Love this one - simple, innocent song about young romance. "The room is spinning as she whispers my name", it doesn't get any better than that. "Don't Take My Car Out Tonight" is their best song IMO.
'South Ferry Road' is another great Hooters song.
The instrument Jay was asking about is called a melodica. Have a Tenacious Tuesday!!
They also call it a hooter.
I had totally forgotten about this song! That's the great thing about this and other reaction channels. So many forgotten songs are revived.
Always loved this! Such a feel good song.😊
Got to see these guys live a few times in the mid-80's and they never disappointed. Such a great live band! Always a fun show! The instrument is a Melodica.
You’re right, they were fantastic live. I also saw them a couple times in Pittsburgh. They opened for Loverboy and actually stole the show and got see them a few later with Bryan Adam’s and didn’t disappoint that night either
👏👏💕 I still love this song! Yes, I agree, a great song for Summer! Jay says: "Why can't we have music like that anymore?" I must say, those of us who were teenagers in the 1980s had many choices in music to listen too, a lot of interesting genres to choose from within our reach! It was an awesome decade of music for sure. I enjoyed your reaction! ☮ and 💕
The Hooters...being from Philly...had the honor of being the first band to open the Live Aid concert. July 13,1985. Nice way to get the party started! ✌️
Gotta save some money for the popcorn, Right?😂
Melodica. Donald Fagen of Steely Dan plays one during shows.
The weird looking instrument is a HOOTER!! They were a Philadelphia group in the 80's, and took their name from that instrument. They were voted Band of the Year, had a few hits, but their biggest success was writing "Time After Time" which Cyndi Lauper made HUGE!
I love this joyful song. This whole album (Nervous Nights) is great!
Hooters had another big hit off this album called DAY BY DAY!! That should be your next Hooters song!
Brings back a lot of good memories from the mid eighties. Check out All You Zombies, next. ✌️🇨🇦
Back in 1988 my cousin and I moved into an apartment together, I had about 100 cassettes and he had about 300. The Hooters Nervous Night was the ONLY cassette we both had.
