Hello there! I’m an aspiring film director and am in the process of trying to transfer to Chapman university myself. I have no experience with film directing and was wondering if I could have some help on where to start? Great film btw!
Of course!! I’ll leave a little bit of my advice here and there is so much more that you can pick up in UA-cam that helped me so much! The first thing that helps me is just to practice and get experience. With a phone, you always have a camera available so just shoot whatever and whenever you can! The second little piece of advice is that directing is all about knowing where to place attention, so in a scene I always look for where my attention is going and then use the camera/editing to highlight that. Third is just to have fun. Filmmaking can be some of the most fun and interesting times you will have and there is no right or wrong way to make a movie, so experiment!! Thank you for your support!!

I love making and working on small films and projects and I’m thinking of applying to filmschool as well.. any advice on how to come up with ideas for short films or films one can use to apply?
Usually ideas just pop up suddenly and other times you see or read something and get an idea but I currently feel like I don’t have any films that I’ve made so far that have a good enough storyline or look good enough to send in with an application. And just generally I’m kind of at a loss of what stories to tell or what to write. Is there anything that helps you cone up with ideas?
My ideas always tend to come to me right before I sleep, where my mind can wander. And those ideas are always based within my own life. Then I take those narrow ideas and try to change them and make them more general, but in the most interesting way I can, to make them relatable to others! But yeah, I always start with sometime that I’ve experienced or something that has affected me, and then find ways to illustrate that differently in ways others might understand
