What you're talking about is absentee voting. It's mail-in voting for a much smaller number of people who have an actual reason why they can't show up at the polls. Yes, it's susceptible to voter fraud, but neither side has complained and suggested that we not have absentee voting. Trump specifically defended absentee voting.
The problem comes when they go willy-nilly and send out ballots to the entire state and do mail-in voting statewide. It's a bad system, and it should never be trusted.

We already have the law that you have to be a US citizen in order to vote. When you register to vote, didn’t you have to show your Social Security number and date of birth? Didn’t you have to show an ID or birth certificate? There is no way that noncitizens can register to vote now or get a valid ballot or show up to vote because if you don’t have a Social Security number that is ONLY given to US citizens, you can’t vote! This Briefing is some kind of political game because we don’t need a law to prove citizenship that we already have . What we do need is the Republicans that are in charge to pass a border bill so that we have more border security, , More border technology, and new laws that will actually give the power for the president to shut down the border. Right now we only have the power to do a temporary 90 day ban, But that is a Band-Aid that the courts intervene on so we need the laws. My adult child moved out of Maryland and registered to vote in that state 9 years ago. Every year we get letters from Maryland board of elections to invite my child to vote. Why hasn’t Maryland even attempted to close this simple loophole?

We already have the law that you have to be a US citizen in order to vote. When you register to vote, didn’t you have to show your Social Security number and date of birth? Didn’t you have to show an ID or birth certificate? There is no way that noncitizens can register to vote now or get a valid ballot or show up to vote because if you don’t have a Social Security number that is ONLY given to US citizens, you can’t vote! This Briefing is some kind of political game because we don’t need a law to prove citizenship that we already have . What we do need is the Republicans that are in charge to pass a border bill so that we have more border security, , More border technology, and new laws that will actually give the power for the president to shut down the border. Right now we only have the power to do a temporary 90 day ban, But that is a Band-Aid that the courts intervene on so we need the laws. Why won’t the Republicans change the law and pass a border bill right now? Why are they not working day and night on that instead of some silly New law that already exist to prove citizenship to vote? This is a Political football game and we all have to stand up and say no to it. Demand that the Republicans pass a stand alone border bill right now!

Yes, there has been too much talk, politicians making political hay out of the issues without doing anything. I can only hope this is different. I believe there was cheating in the last election, so if they want to be elected they will be motivated to pass this law.
