      Why not just buy regular rubbing alcohol? Alcohol is cheap and can be used as an all around sanitizer. You can put it in a spray bottle with water to clean and sanitize surfaces. Add Alcohol to aloe gel for a hand Sanitizer. You can use alcohol topically to take down a fever. 😊

      Knitting is not only a barter item, but a usable skill. I’d trade a few apples for some socks, a couple dozen eggs for a sweater or shawl… keep stockpiling the yarn honey, get all kinds of colors & different materials if you can. Heck, you may even get some sheep & learn how to spin their wool into an unlimited supply of yarn.

    • @jessicasarmy8896

      Knitting is such an important skill. I, too, am a knitter. Hats, cowls, mittens, socks are all needed items. Also, knitting needs make handy personal protection if you need to use them for that! Knit those items for bartering for food or anything else you need and do not have.

    Great ideas. Thanks for pointing out some gaps in my stocks. I have always wondered how bartering would actually work. Every day with close neighbors or a “market day” in the parking lot of the abandoned grocery store with a larger group? Also, how to agree to bartering rules beforehand to keep people from begging for your stuff or just trying to steal it from you?

    • @diypreppertv
      @diypreppertv  9 місяців тому +11

      If things lasted long enough, established markets would probably start to form, but it would probably start out very small. The show Jericho had some interesting ideas about that. I think the episode was called Blackjack.

    • @OhNo-jq6iz
      @OhNo-jq6iz 9 місяців тому +8

      Honestly, I’d stick to a few trust-worthy sources for an ongoing exchange of goods/services. Maybe you have an apple tree & your neighbor has chickens. Meet every week or 2 to see about trading some eggs for apples… maybe another neighbor is a hair-stylist. Ya’ll can pay her for monthly haircuts with eggs or apples, etc

    • @sjordan7085
      @sjordan7085 7 місяців тому

      Rodents do not like the smell of Irish Mist soap. That said, if you have 'off duty' cats, sometimes just the smell of a cat will keep mice out, expecially if all food items are propery sealed, such as dry foods in mylar, then placed inside sealed plastic buckets. Make sure other dry foods are either in sealed tins or thick plastic totes that seal well. Any animal feeds should be stored in metal containers with well fitting lids or those gama lid topped plastic vaults used for dog food. A farmer friend told me nobody has just one mouse or rat. Sh used to put out commercially made potato flakes which are quite salty, the mice eat them and get very thirsty, then drink lots of water placed in bowls near the potato flakes..... end of story. The other thing my friend used to do, was take a plastic stright sided bucket with a wire handle, that has a bead hand grip on it. She covered the bead with peanut butter, and the mice would fall off and drown in the bucket of water. Both methods are less than kind, but probably a lot better than mouse traps or those nasty sticky strips. That said, when I discovered a family of baby rats in the back garden eating seed that had fallen from birdfeeders, I just waited for them to leave, and never saw them again. Lots of predators around hear and I didn't have the heart to harm them, especially when their lives were likely very short in any case.

I don't have a family myself, but a lot of niece's and nephew's. It'll be good to have games, puzzles, crayons and markers and even video games to keep them busy. Personally, I think one of the things most people are going to struggle with if SHTF does happen is being suddenly bereft of modern entertainment. Sure, in the initial scramble to secure your location you probably won't notice, but once things quiet down? Especially during winter? People are gonna go stir-crazy fast

    Mice will eat hand soap bars, so store those in a secure tote as well as toilet paper and other paper products. I store three 4lb bags of sugar in 50caliber Steel Ammo Cans with a rubber seal in the lid (this keeps moisture and rodents out). I don't advise storing sugar in glass jars/bottles because glass can break. Mice "can" eat through plastic 2 liter bottles, so I don't keep anything in them that I can not afford to lose. On personal hygiene, I don't see Hair Brushes, Combs, Razors and Mouth Wash on Lists. I would not Barter Sawyer Mini's because my group will need those someday (they only last for 100,000 gallons of water). If you know how to make charcoal, you can use charcoal and sand in a container to Barter. Scissors and Magnifying Glasses will be great Barter Items. Be prepared and be safe my friends.

      Just grab and extra “one” when you go shopping. For example, if you want lamps and oil, grab one of each on a shopping trip. Next trip get some extra cans. For propane, look at marketplace or yard sales to get a cheap old tank for $5 and trade it in for a new, full, tank for $20-$25. No one goes and buys everything at once. I’ve been at it for years and still have bigger gaps then I’d like, but I’m still at it, little by little.
