Your message is spot on. A couple of clarifications. 1. People put off learning the language until they arrive because they think you can learn it better surrounded by the culture and language. This is false. a) It is cheaper to devote a month(s) to study at home with your parents than in the target country. b) Native speakers can forgive pronunciation and grammar mistakes. If you do not know the word, it is game over. So concentrate on learning words while getting a feel for the grammar and pronunciation. It is quite possible your grammar book will give you incomplete pronunciation and grammar rules anyway. c) German has some big words. Focus on learning the little words. For example, die Unterstützung - assistance is too long. It is difficult to retain. It comes from unter - under (very easy to remember) and stützen - to support and -ung which just makes the word a noun, -en makes it a verb. By learning stützen, you will automatically understand another 6 words besides these two (see Wiktionary). To remember stützen, you can associate it with the English strut, if you know the word. In other words, first associate stützen with strut and when you have that link down, with the derived term, support. Once you have that connection down, then learn Unterstützung - under support, i.e., assistance. This will be easier, faster, and more likely to lead to long-term retention. 2. It is not that people do not want to help foreigners (if they do not look dangerous, like a homeless person (because of likely narcotics problems)), but they get tired of it. If the person has the time, he or she might be quite happy to help, but maybe they budgeted 10 minutes to reach their destination and helping you is going to mean they miss their appointment. Or maybe they already have plans for that day. Likewise, spending all your free time helping one person gets old. They want a social life too. And Western societies are not so macho nowadays. This idea that females are helpless is mostly gone. So, dressing sexy and expecting some man to bend over backwards for a look at your chest is not going to attract the right attention. 3. Asking for help can lead to pickpocketing and scams. There are criminals who look for foreigners in need of assistance and then exchange the just-purchased valid bus ticket for an expired one, for example. Or worse. So, you are safer taking care of yourself. Western banks have websites that can be accessed from your home country. Before moving abroad, familiarise yourself with them and the terms they use. That will help in using a cash point, for example.
Hi I fully agree with your sentiments. I actually was not aware of the bus ticket scam, I guess it is because I only use a digital ticket. Thanks for the info!
I love your content. Keep up the good work. Can you please talk about timelines. From when you made your school applications to when you finally landed in Germany. Also talk about your first student jobs. Thanks.

Actually stud, not strut (airplane term), is the English deriviative.
