- Squishin: Accomplished! The Oregon Zoo's elephant family enjoyed squishing and eating some giant pumpkins, courtesy of farmers Larry Nelson and Amanda Gilmour. A gourd time was had by all!

Elephants are among my favorite animals. They are so intelligent and large. Each one has a personality, and I truly believe that they have sapian levels of sentience.

I've got to improve my scheduling to capture these events (then again, I'm low on cash this month). Nevertheless, Chendra, Shine and Rose-Tu all appear to have had tons of fun this year, smashing the pumpkins that Nelson and Gilmour were generous enough to provide. Hope they enjoyed munching on them! :D

Why do people feel the need to scream at the elephants?
No one was screaming at the elephants. They were laughing and gasping in surprise because the elephants were so entertaining and enchanting.
At the beginning? Very annoying woman.
I volunteer at a similar zoo and even I don’t know why people get so loud.

I enjoyed watching the elephants trampling pumpkins last year and was glad to see a second edition , but this time the ambient noise ruined it for me

Nice, but I wonder why the pumpkins were not placed in the grass instead of the dirt....once really dirty the elephants push away those parts. Must be a reason I figure.

You're insane. Do they look beaten, starved or don't play well with others?
They eat well and are given activities. It's a different experience. Just like people have different experiences depending on where they live and how they are raised.
Then donate more to help protect the ones in the wild. And besides, a significant percentage of animals at the Oregon Zoo are rescues that either cannot survive in the wild or are going through treatment to be released.
The Oregon Zoo takes better care of its animals than 99% of zoos. They were the pioneers in giving animals behavioral enrichment activities like this. I understand your concern, but this zoo is not the enemy. It has a very wealthy local tax base to support innovative care.
