"Tin Soldier" was like a glimpse into the future. If you wanted to know where rock music was headed in the late 60s and early 70s it is pretty much all here. Steve Marriott was one of the first to show how a very special sort of performer could deliver a powerful vocal over a very heavy guitar sound.
Robert Plant said in an interview, circa 1975, when Zep were ruling the earth, that marriot was the best singer to come out of the UK...he said his voice and bravado was unmatched. Fun fact - plantvwoukd go to many SF gigs
So well put, Tin Soldier took rock to the next level, and today everybody reacting to it for the first time is blown away too, as we know they will be.
Probably my favourite band of all time. Steve Marriott is the greatest male vocalist the uk has ever produced in my humble opinion. Their album Ogdens Nutgone Flake is an absolute classic - stand out track is Afterglow.
The genre of music (late 60s) was called 'psychedelic rock'. The Small Faces were formed in London in about 1965, and Steve Marriott had a breathtaking voice and a stage presence to match. Tragically, Marriott died in his sleep when a fire, caused by a cigarette, swept through his home in Essex, England, in 1991. Chris Clements, who played with Marriott, said this about him: "One particular memory sticks in my mind. When we rehearsed with him, he almost spoke the words of the song, rather than sang the words. He was listening to us, making sure we got the backing right, so he didn't put himself out vocally. But when we did the first gig with him, out came this fantastic soul voice, we all looked at each other, and our mouths fell open!" RIP, Steve - and thank you for your music.
Oh man, The Small Faces are up there with The Who as my favourite bands. So many amazing tracks to choose from, including (but not only) All or Nothing, Here Come the Nice, Itchycoo Park, Lazy Sunday, The Universal, Afterglow of Your Love, Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Song of a Baker, Happy Days Toy Town, Collibosher, Red Balloon, Wide Eyed Girl on the Wall, Wham Bam, Thank You Mam...
The Small Faces were the most underrated band, listen next to their song You Need Loving released 1966 and compare it to Led Zeppelin Whole lotta Love released in 1969
This and Ichycoo Park, by Small Faces. The next band with singer Steve Mariott is Humble Pie. Try 'I Don't Need No Doctor' and take off from there. Yes I was 16 in 1967. So dam LUCKY. Also Steve was one of the best front men in Rock and Roll.
They were called the Small Faces because they were all "short" men. The two main songwriters, Steve Marriott (singer/guitarist) and Ronnie Laine (bassist/singer) recorded an album called "Majik Mijits." They were 5'4" and 5'5" respectively. Steve wanted to bring Peter Frampton into the band as a second guitarist and Ronnie said no, so he eventually left to form Humble Pie for Frampton. The Small Faces dropped the "small" when Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood joined from the Jeff Beck band and they went on to success as "The Faces." Steve had success with Humble Pie, but his life was rough financially and he met an unfortunate death in a fire supposedly caused by a cigarette. Steve Marriott was truly one of the greatest voices in music history, as you have discovered. I highly suggest a song Steve did not like all that much, but it was one of their greatest hits ... a Ronnie Laine composition called "Itchycoo Park". Tin Soldier is simply one of the best songs ever recorded. BTW - the lovely young lady singing backup is P.P. Arnold, a star in her own right in the UK and Steve's girlfriend at the time.
@@ariesred777 Thank you for your kind words. Yeah, Steve was broke and the cause of death is suspicious. He was screwed by just about everybody in the music business ... imagine that! I tend to think he likely owed money to somebody. Very sad, he should have been huge! Very mis-managed!
I saw the Small Faces here in Cambridge and later The Jeff Beck Group as a “replacement” for Procul Harem who had to pull out during a busy tour. I also saw The Yardbirds on stage but not sure if Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page was the guitarist at the time.
Born in Feb. 1952, I grew up in the greatest era of Music; the 50s and 60s, and listed to the Small Faces along with the many, many other Bands of that time. I agree with the reviews posted....Another great song to listen to is "Itchycoo Park" ....another great classic. AND, the Album, "Ogden's Nutgone Flake", recorded Oct. 21, 1967 to Apr 3, 1968, and released on May 24, 1968 is an absolute masterpiece and a Classic of an Album........OH, another great song off of the that Album is "Afterglow".
The small face's, Rod, Ronnie, after the face's, Rod Stewart, Ronnie wood, before he joined the Stones, Real music sweetie ✌️❤️ Greetings from Scotland
Their other hits were ' Itchycoo Park', 'Lazy Sunday Afternoon' and I have a soft spot for the sillyness of side 2 of 'Ogdens Nut Gone Flake'. Also they were one the only bands not bother singing with an American accent. The Woman is P. P. Arnold who is/was American. This was about 1967.
I had the privilege of being a teenager in that decade. Of all the music from that era , Tin Soldier is probably for me, the standout. So much so in fact, that I have left instructions with my family, to play Tin Soldier as I am carried out at my funeral service. I was the biggest Steve Marriott fan in my youth. I had posters for Africa of Steve and The Small Faces on every wall, ceiling, cupboard door, everywhere. I parted my hair down the middle a la Steve. He tragically died in a fire in his apartment. 😭😭😭
Just imagine, these very young men were mis managed from the start. Before just two years, they broke up after recording 14 unforgettable songs. What would or could they have done if they remained together for twenty years! My heart goes out to steve Mariott and Ronnie Lane who both died so young in devastating circumstances. You will never be forgotten and your music will live on.
The lady is PP Arnold who wasn't a regular member of this band.Small faces early music is psychedelic a well as jazzy. Thei classic album is Ogdens NutGone Flake. Other great songs are Lazy Sunday, Sha L La Lee, My Minds Eye, The Universal Watcha Gonna do about It, Here Comes The Nice, ,Lazy Sunday, Itchycoo Park. They were also Mods. Have you done Who, Kinks, Traffic ,Pink Floyd. The Nice. There's loads more that I can't think of just now.
At any time most current music is rubbish - but is rapidly forgotten. when you look back twenty plus years, only see the good stuff because that is what is remembered (yes, this is a huge generalization and not quite literally true)
Back in the day... we used to be able to see bands like this in local dance halls and small venues. And it was cheap to get in. This band morphed into The Faces with Rod Stewart... the best live shows ever.

I gig and play older music like this and the kids love it. We thought that young people would only want new stuff and not like what we do but its the opposite. Just because a song is 50 years old doesn't mean you cant listen to it or play it or enjoy it, it's all out there to go and get. Some of us like me were lucky enough to have been around when these songs were first heard on the radio. I only remember from the late 60's but consider I have lived through the best times for music.
You should maybe check out the band Humble Pie and their song Black Coffee which was the band Steve Marriot was in after the Small Faces. That is a brilliant song 🎵
The Small Faces - 60s pop/rock. Lead singer Steve Marriot left to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton. Those remaining became 'The Faces' with Rod Stewart as lead singer, when they split up Ronnie Wood joined the Rolling Stones and Stewart went solo. Drummer Kenny Jones later joined The Who, Ronnie Lane (Bass) formed 'Poacher' and Ian McClagen (keyboards) became a highly sought after session musician. Sadly only Kenny Jones is still alive. Brilliant band, IMHO Steve Marriot is the greatest rock singer the UK ever produced.
I saw Steve Marriot with Humble Pie way back in 1971 in Los Angeles and that band molded my entire musical future to this day. You need to check out Humble Pie! Steve is one of the greatest Rock/Soul singers of all time!
The female singer is P.P. Arnold, not part of the group, probably included because she was in a relationship with lead singer Steve Marriott, she was a great singer in her own right
I grew up with this music, and I can honestly say this song sounds even better now than it did when it was released way back in 1968, except it was also said to be released on 2nd December 1967? But I don’t recall hearing it for the first time until early ‘68. Also give All or nothing a listen to as well 😍😍😍
I know the feeling. I have been down a Small Faces rabbit hole for the past year. Listen to The Faces when Ronnie Lane was still with him. Listen to Humble Pie - Thirty Days in The Hole will amaze you.Listen to all of the members music subsequent to Small Faces.

Great band, was around when they first kicked off, and subsequently morphed into the Faces (with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood) after Marriott's departure. His death in a house fire took him at too earlier an age. Yeah, good bands are Small Faces, The Faces, Humble Pie, The Kinks, Peter Green's Fleewood Mac ( not present one), Rolling Stones (obviously)...so many that started in early to mid 1960s. Not just musically, but in so many ways life was much better back then. IT has given us computers mobile phones etc, but has poisoned life in general. IT has increased hassle for people not the opposite as was promised. Social media is largely a swill of excretia to one another. I have a phone and use it as such, I would willingly destroy it if the world turned its' back on the whole system.
Steve Marriott had so much soul. Loved him with Small Faces. First discovered them as a young teenager in the early 70s. Found their song Lazy Sunday on one of my uncle's albums he wanted me to copy for him on cassette called History of British Rock Vol. 2. Afterwards I had to hear all of their tunes plus all the ones by Marriott's band Humble Pie. Love it!
Another quote about Steve Marriott, this time from Robert Plant: '"You know Steve Marriott was the first choice to be Black Sabbath's vocalist. I tried everything I could think of to get him to agree, but he had other plans. He was Jimmy Page's first choice for Led Zeppelin too. He tried as hard as I did." I felt exactly the same way as this first time I heard Tin Soldier but that was in 1967 though 🎸👍🏻listening on my fathers car wireless a moment in time I have never forgot to this dayLucky enough to still have the original single in my collection along with their first album oooh and Ogdens Nut Gone Flake LP in its glorious unique round cover😘
Steve Marriott has one of the best voice in Rock ever a total ass kick of a vocal how have you not heard him before? most of the 60's bands are quality fact, the Small faces were rock and R and B maybe and were a top band in the Mods thing , delve into the 1960's UK and read and listen you will dig it .
Feeling like your plea at the end was speaking directly to me. Here are a handful of fantastic songs, a few by well known artists and the others not so much, that no one has yet reacted to. From the 70's, please try to do The Faces "Had me A Real Good Time", Tim Buckley "Because Of You", The Rolling Stones "All Down The Line". And from the 80's three female fronted hard rock/metal bands: Smashed Gladys "Eye Of The Storm", Detente "Holy War", Rock Goddess "Sexy Eyes". I think you'll like most of these. If so, I have plenty more. I'd start with the Faces, Stones, and Detente tracks as they're more high energy. Studio versions please. Thanks in advance.
I was a little girl when this was a hit & still love it. This was known as R&B back in the day. My daughter's generation rebranded the genre as R&B much later. So happy that you appreciate the music of days gone by
Steve Marriot was excellent! After Small Faces, he went to Humble Pie, which was also excellent. I heard he died pretty young, like in his 40s from smoking. Too bad.
I still find it hard to understand why people have still never heard of the Small Faces. Note P.P. Arnold and backing vocals Please play the whole thing before stopping and making a comment.
Small Faces were a Mod band. Lead singer Steve Marriott had one of the strongest voices in rock but underrated. PP Arnold is the lady who makes this video so watchable. Not as famous as All or Nothing or Itchycoo Park but a really great song.
What a brilliant band The Small Faces were here in the UK back in the '60's. If you want to get a real idea of what Stevie's voice was really like, then PLEASE listen & react to Humble Pie's live performance of 'Black Coffee' with Stevie Marriott on vocals🙋♂ Stevie tragically died in a house fire back in the late '80's I believe and he's still so sorely missed. 💔 The lady joining The Small Faces here was P.P Arnold, who had originally been a member of Ike & Tina Turner's backing vocalists.
Duuuuuuude this song is fekin incredible! ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥 what a shock to come across you through Sims cc tutorials and find you chattin about the most fire tunes Have you hear Itchycoo Park? one of my favourite songs ever , Small Faces are just 💚 I too am in love with Marriott, left too early

It's a shame that coke took over his life.

underrated by who?
@@willyharvey5563 by many unfortunately. Especially those who think Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande & Taylor Swift are good music.

This IS the sound of the 60s.
Sad storey behind Steve Marriott’s demise but PP Arnold is still making amazing music.
They were a really good band. When I was a kid I really liked 'tin soldier' and some other tracks by them.
Watching this again its very easy to see where Paul Weller gets his influences
I was a little girl when this was a hit & still love it. This was known as R&B back in the day. My daughter's generation rebranded the genre as R&B much later. So happy that you appreciate the music of days gone by
ITS an OMG moment
Small Faces - All Or Nothing
Steve Marriott had a tremendous voice with full range, sadly missed but his music will live on
Steve Marriot was excellent! After Small Faces, he went to Humble Pie,
which was also excellent. I heard he died pretty young, like in his 40s from smoking.
Too bad.
Once a mod ..always a mod ..nuff said ❤
I still find it hard to understand why people have still never heard of the Small Faces.
Steve Marriott was the whole package. Great voice, multi-talented!
THEY are the small faces listen to all their songs istill listen
❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥 what a shock to come across you through Sims cc tutorials and find you chattin about the most fire tunes
Have you hear Itchycoo Park? one of my favourite songs ever , Small Faces are just 💚 I too am in love with Marriott, left too early
look up Humble pie
With Billy Connolly?
This band was referred to as the Mods so I guess the genre would be Mod Pop
