i had a Hornet 600 for about 6 years, a bloody warhorse that bike. It's over 20 years old and still registered so it's still knocking around god bless it. The only time it ever broke down on me was (drumroll) RR failure. I live in Australia and Jim wasnt around so I had to diagnose and fix it myself. A good learning experience it was too. Cool vid, I love the Hornet. I’ve got the 2002 CB500, been expecting the reg/rec to give up by now but charges well for the moment. I’ve put a little volt meter on the bike to keep me informed 😂. Good demo of diagnosis, wish I had an oscilloscope as would love to get into the stator and really see how it’s doing. Great vid as always, not many professional bike mechanics on UA-cam, glad you take the time to share.

you don't need to do all those checks for the phases. probe connectors A and B, move probe from B to C, move probe from A to C. There are only three possible checks you can do. A-B, B-C, C-A.
Hello Really enjoying your channel ,regarding the reg/ rec on Hondas , I wonder if you have come across the problems on the fi Honda blackbirds with the inspection multi plug in the loom which is used once when checked at the factory and then taped up ,the problem is where it is situated as it gets all the elements thrown at it ,then it corrodes causing all sort of problems.on my own bird it spiked the ecu which cost me a packet .there is a fix for this as to cut the plug off and join the wires up . Just thought this might make a good topic for you to show . Thanks again fun For your channel .

When lights are on, and when I turn on the blinkers the bike idles really rough. I measured charging and it seems that its charging the battery okay (also with ignotion off batt was at 13.1V so I guess that means all is well?). What to look at next?
how do you reach the hoses that are between the tank and the engine... i can't fit my fingers in there 😐and even so, removing them is easy... reattaching them must be a pain

What would cause a new voltage regulator rectifier to fail a day after being installed? I have an 2006, diagnosed the issue following your video. Got a new regulator, installed it, ran great, then today it died again. What would cause the bike to kill the regulator again?
Hi, I bought a JMC gel battery to replace my old one. It lasted me only 2 days. How reliable are they? I obviously had some sort of issue with my bike but my concern is I charged this one couple of times and now doesn't even fully charge/hold enough charge to start the battery. My old one still does OEM one. Do you think that I might have a faulty one? I don't trust the garage that I bought it from. But they assured me I would have one year warranty. Bought it two months ago and charged twice then left the bike until now. Do you think an electronic problem would damage the bike this bad so quick? The other one is still not that bad and it is years old.
I run a old Honda Blackbird through rain and snow, crud and shit in Scotland where they cover the roads in the most aggressive corrosive rock salt there is. Honda bikes are the only ones that keep going in my opinion. Brembo brakes fantastic on a track, try riding through winter with them 🤣
for the price its not worth it. they are lighter yes, but very unstable and must have a delicate charging/discharging board to make them work. lead battery are heavier, but has been proven safe and reliable for a 100years.
They make good sense for a race bike, really easy way to shed a bit of weight. For a road application its probably overkill for most people as a meaningful upgrade. One big positive is They can obviously take up a lot less space for a given amount of cranking amps which is why they are starting to show up on new bikes as standard.
Superbike Surgery TV , I live in the tropics where generally the old acid bike battery doesn’t have a very long life span. I reckon the lithium will last longer and will be more cost effective. I’ve noticed the lithium stays better charged whilst the bike sits unused too. Time will tell.
I tried a lithium battery on my Triumph Speed Triple, it needs up to 14.5v to charge it properly and if it reaches 15v the battery is killed outright I found it wasn't worth it and was a lot less reliable than the AGM Yuasa The £100 for the lithium battery and £80 for the specific charger is quite a financial outlay. Both are just sitting on a shelf now I think the charging system needs upgrading to provide the 14.5v needed as mine maxes at 14.1v
Only practical benefit is less weight. Risks are many. Worse performance in extreme temperatures, sensitive charging, yadda yadda. I was considering one myself, but it makes much more sense to just spend the extra money on better equipment and maintenance.
re your winter storage advice. first of all the bike should be moved regularly to prevent flat spotting the tyres. repositioning with a different wheel position. topping the tank of course. if you do not run the bike up to normal working temperature regularly and if posibble take it through all the gears, just up and down the drive for example you will allow the cogs to stick and seals to dry out. leaving the bike for long periods (over winter) will sometimes cause sticking valves and weaken those valves which have been positioned under compression also the bores will be re oiled. so regularly turning the engine over is a sensible thing to do. if the battery is placed on a trickle charge it will not freeze and will be in tip top condition in the spring.

I've always ridden all my bikes 12months of the year as I commute to work, there has only been 2 days in last 5 years where I considered the weather to bad too ride ice or snow actually on the road. The only one I had any problems with starting was my (just sold) Ducati 1000ds multistrada some mornings I had to hook it up to a charger/booster and that did the trick. My old Fazer 600 was brilliant right through winter never skipped a beat started 1st time without fail, I've just got a Hornet 600 so we will see how this handles the north west of England on a daily basis starting in December.
You'd think they'd put some bird shit, sorry thermal heat transfer paste between the reg/rec and frame but then I suppose sales on new reg/recs would be down?
its normally internal heat and nano cracking inside of the semiconductor that kills them. they are simply build just strong enough to last a couple of years. i have worked for the military and most electronic is used for 30years and is still working without trouble. 'civilian" stuff is just disposable garbage.
@Francois Dupont, Yeah totally agree, I'm an electronics engineer and have worked on a lot of military design and build hence the use of MIL grade components. In this case a bit of thermal paste would have added some heat transfer. May not have lasted much longer, who knows but any aid is better than none. But then the bike would cost more. Doesn't help that it's in a place with little airflow.
Haha, yes I see your point. Ordinarily I'd never put anything shiny anywhere near the ground. What you didn't see off camera was me asking the owner if I could use his empty work bench to put the tank on. To which the reply was "just chuck it on the ground" what also doesn't come out in the video is the fact the tank already looked like someone had been playing football with it. Good point but don't assume you are getting the full story from the small snap shot you get to see. Anyone who knows me or has seen me work knows how OCD I am.

Yup, it's AC, he is measuring the came coil in two directions. no need.
hook up a ctek trickle charger and leave it all in the bike and plugged on is they way to go everything I own is plugged into one each

At idle I have 13 V form the stator but when I rev it it goes to 40-42 V. This means that I have to replace the stator?

Check the AC side (both the RR plug and the joint plug - left side in that large clear plastic cover).

What’s your thoughts on lithium batteries..? I’ve just put one in my Ducati 848, seems great however early days....
