- Presenter and DJ Reggie Yates grew up knowing very little about his father's side of the family. Reggie sets out on the trail of his grandfather, Harry Philip Yates. His journey takes him to Ghana, where he unravels a complex family history where Ghanaian culture and British colonialism collide.

I wish Reggie would find his English second cousins (George's other great-grandkids) and meet them. He already has the names of their grandparents (George's other children). With the power of the BBC behind him, it should not be too difficult to trace those lines of his family down to the present day. Some of them may be quite shocked to discover that their great-grandfather had another family on the side, but others may love discovering a new cousin.
Wouldn't be useful for his career to connect with that side of his family...

I think the fact that his great-grandfather returned before his son was born says a lot about the man. It's very possible he had a loving relationship with his family in Africa.

I love Finding Your Roots its so interesting. Everyone should try to dig into their history a bit it really gives a lot of understanding. One day our future relatives might be researching us

I agree. Much more research to do to define the relationships or improve perspective. It was during the turn of the century, THE LAST CENTURY, so apply the standards of the time. I’m really despondent by how the lady is very permissive of his great grandfather. I shared Reggie’s disbelief of his behavior. She made everything so kind and clean often appeared to be defending great grand pappy’s behavior. I felt much irritation with her.

Everyone's in these comment making some really weird judgements that are obviously based in today's race-baiting climate. We weren't there so to make this more than what it is, is simply ridiculous. My family names have been mispelled repeatedly over 5 generations. Even from sibling to sibling! So, keep hold of that “W” and “E” yates affidavit. No telling what trail it might lead to.

In a colonial state some how I don’t think it’s a tradition to have a relationship with a native woman it’s probably something else.
It was very common to have local arrangements, hence the Cape Coloured population and the Anglo-Indians in India.
While most people would feel disgusted to have a slave master as a great grandad, Yates looks rather chuffed and proud.

He is not. He needs to know who he is. He is just stating the facts which he was unaware about. It is an immediate and genuine reaction to the information he is getting.
