Hey Sam! I loved this video a lot! I’m studying audio engineering and music production in college and would love to see more videos of you explaining and demonstrating your gear! Especially since I’m also obsessed with the Beatles and their equipment!
Great demo. I think the Dr. Robert pedal has the edge over the Mocker. I think its more versatile. I've played one for quite some time and its probably my favorite pedal.
Great video Sam! REALLY great to hear AND see you! You are great …. keep those covers coming! As I said b4, your dedication and ability is INCREDIBLE!😊
You have one of the best gear setups for Beatles stuff I’ve ever seen - good mix of old and new equipment, and rather straightforward. It’s a credit to how good your ears are that you can pull that together so well. Great demo(s), good video, and all that. I’m not usually into “amps in a box” but the Dr. Robert pedal nails that Beatles era tone so perfectly and considering how rare of an amp it is - well, I wish I wasn’t broke, lol.
Fun demo, thanks! I bought a Dr. Robert when it was released and like it a lot - recently found a great tone I've looked for for ages with my 1957 Hofner Club 60 thru the Mach Schau, tone down on the guitar and mids way up on the pedal . . . it has a lot going for it. I'd actually like a Mocker, sounds terrific! I've also been using the Victory Copper V4 Pre-Amp Pedal (with 3 tubes!) which has some great Voxy tones!
I was watching this and realized that I'd love to see a comparison between the Dr. Robert and the KOT. A side by side with a unique OD and a transparent OD would show off its tonal character. Could add in the Mocker vs your Sun Bender for good measure :)
The doctor Robert is a fuzzy overdrive, the mocker is more fuzz , I like both, I have the Lumpy 7 series overdrive that is a fuzzy overdrive more similar to the doctor Robert
This is an interesting demo. Thank you! I can clearly hear how the Dr. Robert gets Revolver era rhythm guitar sounds and the Paperback Writer riff sound. The Mocker is not instantly reminding me of any Beatles record. Somehow the actual Beatles fuzz/distortion sounds clear and bright with a very buzzy sound. Almost like hearing a direct signal and a fuzz signal at the same time. Or maybe it's that the guitars were set bright, but because they recorded to tape, it takes away the harshness. I don't know, but again, the Mocker doesn't quite evoke the Beatles, to my ears anyway.
I know what you mean, the tone bender and fuzz face pedals can sound closer to Beatles fuzz. The mocker is based off the fuzz in the UL730, which the Beatles didn’t use much anyway. But I think the mocker is a killer fuzz tone
Well shit, I didn't realize this was such a limited edition thing. At least I got one of the Jext Telez white pedals before they stopped those., those shot up in price like crazy.
Hi Sam! Love your videos! Have you tried playing through the Jensen C12N reissue speakers? Would you recommend the Weber 12F150’s over the Jensens? Trying to decide speakers to use with a 64’ Bassman cab! Thanks!
I would definitely recommend the 12F150’s. I have them in my Pro Reverb, which is my favorite amp My black Bassman has original Oxford 12T6’s in them Jensen C12 reissue is good but too bright
Great overview Sam. I have the Dr Robert, as well. I love it - I suspect it has some form of optical compressor within the circuit - so it's unique to the pedal. I don't know if I can justify just the fuzzface circuit. Which Beatles songs will you be using it for?
Great video. Now I'd really like The Mocker... but it was a limited run of only 200 and is now SOLD OUT. Do you think they will do another run of them?
Have you tried the lumpys lemon drop? It's supposed to be similar (and based off the runoffgroove peppermill, but with some changes). I've been thinking of making a clone out of a kit because I'm broke lol
Hey Sam, another great demo. Thanks. Just curious… did you try putting the Dr Robert before the Mocker in the chain? If you did, which way sounded more authentic?
I haven’t tried that, but it would work. But putting overdrive before fuzz just makes the fuzz more intense. Usually you want it the other way around so you get more character/volume and not just more crunch
Hi Sam Do you notice if the Epiphone Casino actually adds any noticeable tone to capturing a Beatle sound? P90’s in general do have a specific sound somewhere between humbuckers and a darker single coil..
Cool fuzz pedal, but the Dr.Robert one I have gives you closer Revolver era sounds, if you have the patience to get the thing dialed in properly. My complaint about the Dr.Robert pedal is just that, it takes a lot of messing around with the settings to get a decent tone out of it, and sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. The cover of Rain I did, I managed to nail the tone, but a few others from Revolver I did it didn't really work as well. I've been mostly happy with the Dr.Robert pedal, but I felt after getting it that it didn't quite live up to the hype they gave it. The Mocker is a cool sounding pedal, but too much money in my opinion, for just a fuzz tone. Anyways, it's a moot point because they are all gone now anyways, not available to purchase.
I agree the Dr Robert can be hard to dial in. It’s a very bright pedal, but inside there is a treble trimpot which helps. And having the mids knob is also nice. The mocker is a one trick pony but it’s one of the best fuzzes I’ve tried
Thank you very much for this demonstration! Why not try the two coupled pedals? Which one should be placed before the other in the chain? Can we also add the Iridium (with or without the sim amp, just sim cab) Thanks ;-)
I did put them on together at the end, but both placements are valid. Mocker before Robert is more midrange and compressed. Robert before Mocker is more fuzzy and scooped I’ve never tried an iridium but I imagine these would work well with it. I just use vintage tube amps
Seems like The Mocker would probably be more usable in most players’ rigs because it’s a dedicated fuzz pedal and not an “amp in the box” pedal like the Dr. Robert.
Great video and terrific playing! I have another gear related question for you. I have a SM57 mic I use for everything including vocals. I’m interested in acquiring a neumann tlm 103. My question is would spending that kind of money be better put towards a nicer interface or a nicer microphone in your opinion? My interface is a scarlet
It’s a tough answer, because interfaces and mics are both important. I have a focusrite saffire pro 40, which is like a bigger Scarlett. It’s not great, but I find that with the TLM103 I can get any instrument to sound amazing. It’s just the best mic
Like the Dr Robert, actually got one. I hate those holes in the pedal though. They are specialy made for their wacky pedalboards wich i tried and send back direct.
Amazing playing and demo!! Had a Dr Robert shortly but couldn’t get it to work for some reason. Know they take a special 9V adapter. Which one are you using?
“Mocker” was actually inspired by a comment made by Ringo from the cocktail party scene in “Hard Days Night”. Ringo was asked by a journalist if he was a “Mod” or a “Rocker” and he said he was a “Mocker”…
I'm not too sure about the mocker.... I have the Dr Robert... I love the skinny spikey lead guitar on sgt pepper..... but I don't think it's the mocker.....
Have you tried running the "mocker" without an amp and going straight to your computer? I wonder if it would sound good or does it need an amp to produce the tones
since you are quite the multi instrumentalist i has a suggestion...you know 'COLD TURKEY' was presented to the others as a potential BEATLES tune but none of the others incl. george martin liked it. using yer imagination do a vid where you do a version of it as it mite have sounded as a BEATLES tune. i think it and 'SOUR MILK SEA' would've both been awesome as BEATLES songs.
@@sampopkin no wonder I havent been able to get the same fuzzy sounds out of it as on songs like Taxman, Got to get you into my life, nor Sgt. Pepper's. On an unrelated note, I've been meaning to ask you what type of program you use for editing your videos. Especially for songs containing multiple/double tracked parts.
@@sampopkinso that probably means Paul didn't use the amps distortion for that solo. Oh well. That doesn't really make it any less reliable of a pedal to me. Also, does iMovie allow you to combine multiple clips in the same video together, like on Fixing a Hole for example?
I’m just going to say it, Dr Robert was underwhelming for me(to be fair, I only used it on an AC15). Beatles have the greatest guitar tones of all time. I’ve had v1 and v2 because I was desperate to love it. Even factoring the internal trim pots, my sound was always inferior when I engaged the Dr Robert. The saturation seemed muddy and lacks the clarity of an overdrive, more of a distortion. You can get Beatles tones all night long with a good overdrive and Vox preamp.
Dr Robert for me shines into a fender amp with the Mach Shau on. It’s definitely a specific tool and can sound horrible in many setups. But once dialed in right, it’s the best conqueror distortion pedal I’ve heard
I’m happy that it works for you and to be fair, maybe under the right circumstances, I may like it. Your base tone is absolutely fantastic. There are three preamp pedals that I’ve been using constantly: Thorpy - Scarlet Tunic based on Syd’s Selmer amp, Jackson Audio 1458 based on old Silvertone amps, and the Victory/Thorpy V1 Copper Vox style preamp. All three are excellent and lots of fun. Thanks.
Thanks man!🤩

Interesting pedal! Great demo! The Dr Robert is my favorite guitar pedal, I use it a lot and I like that it gets into fuzz territory as well.
Ringo was asked “are you a Mod or a Rocker?” He said, “I don’t know..I’m a Mocker.”
That 5:42 "spitty" sound might be that elusive "And Your Bird Can Sing" lead sound. Might need to buy this dang thing.
Nice! Didn’t think about that
Great demo! I was expecting to like one better than the other, but it seems like both are completely different and each serves a different purpose.
Great demo. I think the Dr. Robert pedal has the edge over the Mocker. I think its more versatile. I've played one for quite some time and its probably my favorite pedal.
Agreed. The mocker is a killer fuzz pedal but does one thing really well
@@sampopkin frankly, I'm surprised the two were even compared. I thought they were meant to be used alongside each other.
@@elirosen1391 That wasn't my impression, but they do work well together
I have a Dr Robert clone for that overdriven sound, but for deeper fuzz I prefer my 1.5 Tonebender or modified Shin EI FY2 to the Mocker.
Wow they are both beautiful and sound great, never heard of the Dr. Robert before but thanks for bringing it to my attention!
Great video! Interesting. You should make more of these. This one is just as great as your music videos. Looking forward to the next one 👏👍
