I take you through my week at my home and show you my rooms and ideas. I also share with you a home I came upon in my city where I found a picture of a handsome soldier on some steps. It's rather ironic that you mentioned the memorial on your neighbors steps. Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the funeral at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA, of my friend's father, Ernest L. DeSoto, a Vietnam veteran who was MIA for 54 years. His remains were found two years ago and it has taken this long to properly excavate and identify the remains. It was a very complicated process which included DNA testing along with several visits to his family to gather information prior to confirming the discovery. As you can imagine the family's grieving process has gone on as long as he's been missing. Fortunately, his widow, Joyce who just turned 90 years old in May, was able to witness his return. She fought hard all these years to find him while being a mother and father to their three children. She's just as much a hero as he is. No one can say how long the grieving process should take. For this family it has taken 54 years. Thank you, Susan, for sharing your neighbor's memorial for her soldier. XO

Bless you for sharing your story. God keep this Vietnam soldier in his loving care. My oldest brother (who was movie star looking) was sent to Korea as a young man. He passed in his 50's. He was a peace maker and really never belonged in a fighting profession but he answered the call of duty. We are enjoying so much freedom because of what young people fought for. Happy 4th of July. Blessings galore.

In 2021 I lost my my 33 year old daughter, my 3 and 5 year old grandchildren and my 36 year old son in law, who I knew since he was 8 years old. I'm devastated still. I took a 13 week class through my church called "Grief Share." Everyone in that class had lost someone. I lost 3 someones. There is no time limit for grief and when we're ready, we don't move on, we move forward. Blessings to you Susan.

I am 88 years old and tired of too much stuff. If I can get moved into small apt. I will decorate with the stuff I use on a daily basis instead of having cabinets full of stuff I might use someday or just special occasions.1 set of dishes, cookware, linens, a few books and simple but colorful furniture. Room for a radio, tape or CD player and a small TV. Hope it happens soon.❤

I can’t imagine anyone not liking your home or your taste. You have made every home you’ve had look amazing and this one is beautiful already after such short a time. It’s a gift you have. The garden looks wonderful already..you’ve worked so hard. Every week we see such improvements. I don’t have any folk art myself, haven’t seen any to buy to be honest, but it looks very original and eclectic in your home. Desi loves his new environment and it’s a joy to see. Lovely video Susan…very touching about the soldier….wonderful tribute to her loved one.🌸

They loved me like I was there own and loved my children madly. I will honor them for the rest of my life. I moved on when they died, but I keep their memory alive with that photo. It’s as if they’re smiling back at me saying ,” your doing a good job kid”.

As a Gold Star Mom, I totally love and appreciate this beautiful ladies sweet memorial at her home. I have many displays throughout my home to my son. You are right Susan in saying that some people think they know when we should be done grieving, but we are all different. Some people are more comfortable being reflective with their own thoughts & memories and enjoy time and space to themselves after they have lost a loved one. Some people don't want to be alone with their thoughts and want other people around them all the time. But regardless, we all must find our "new normal" that is anything but normal. I, like the lady with the tribute to the military service of her loved one, also display a tribute to my son filled with patriotism and love. Every day is a Memorial Day for me having lost my son while serving our country, 17 years ago, that still feels like just a few days ago. I am not wallowing in grief, I am so thankful that I had my son for 20 years and I am blessed. I never want him forgotten or his sacrifice for all of us. He is always with me in my thoughts & in my heart. I carried him in my womb for 9 months, but I now carry him in my heart until one day when I will see him again. Love never dies and we all choose are own way how to continue feeling & celebrating that love daily. Thank you for sharing this beautiful little story of this loving tribute as we celebrate the greatest country in the world's birthday. So many have fought and died for that freedom. God bless the USA!

First: I want to thank your son for his most precious gift. His life. For us. I’m so sorry you lost him. And, thank you for saying what you did. I lost my husband three years ago. He served in Vietnam on a river patrol boat in the Navy. He was also exposed to Agent Orange. His death certificate (from the VA) attributes his death to Agent Orange. It showed itself throughout the years through illnesses, ending up in Pancreatic cancer and death. He was healthy otherwise, so when he returned home, he ultimately became a sheriff's deputy and served that way. He always wanted to make a difference and help people. I may have lost him three years ago, but it feels like it was yesterday. I miss that man so much. I loved him with all my heart. I can’t imagine dating or “finding” anyone else. But that’s just me. And that’s just my love for him. But I hear people talk about how others should let go and move on when they’re widowed or lose a child, their parents or their grandparents. I’m sorry if it bothers others that I can’t “get over” my husband's death, but I can’t do that. Love goes on. Love is the only thing that lasts forever. How people show their loss is different. Those people who want others to move on or get over it can do so when it’s their turn to deal with it, but I think they should keep their thoughts to themselves until that time comes. I’ll tell you what, though: I’m tired of hearing about it. I’ll say prayers for you and your son. Thank you again. ❤️

Years ago my home was filled with antique furniture. I refinished all of the pieces myself . I had sideboards desks tables dining table chairs. I lost it all in a house fire. I can never replace them again at this stage of my life . The pieces I had can’t even be found anymore . They had a story and so much character . Grief is all the love in our heart and why it hurts so much. We take them with us and although we move forward they remain with us on our journey.

I love that someone put the time and love into a shrine for the person who they lost. Do you ever stop missing a child? Your husband? Never. You shouldn't move on because they're forever a part of you. You should be proud of them and always honor their memory. I still go to Veterans' Day services and I'm damned proud of my father who was a three-war vet. He's been gone since 1997. A hundred years couldn't erase my pride and I have moved on. But, there's still a Dad shaped hole in my life. On another note, your house looks beautiful and I guess I'm trendy. I painted my kitchen blue 8 years ago. The rest of it might be trendy next year? Who knows? LOL I hope that Desi is sooo happy getting to play in his yard whenever he wants. No more waiting for a lead and trudging out through a parking lot or down a walkway. Good boyo. You have such a beautiful home, and you are such a lovely person. I’m really enjoying spending time with you. Too bad we’re not neighbors! I’ve never been one to follow trends…. I’ve never had the money to do that. So I acquire what makes me happy. I try to stick with ‘classic’ versions of things…. Be it furniture, art, clothing, etc…. so I enjoy it forever. Your discussion about grief is very timely, as I’ve been supporting a friend who is slowly losing their spouse. I have been in that situation too, and was literally told - only three days after burying my mom - that I need to “stop living in the past.” Can you imagine being so cruel?! Grief has no limits, and we each have our own path to take. Let’s love and support each other!

I was always love of the color greens and white . I had white and green couch for years and a pair of green chairs, in dinning area had chairs with green veletal coushion but as the years went by I did change my style a few time sense I am 77 years old. I sold my house 13 months ago and move and I pick different shades of blue s beige and grays and I am liking it. Only a few of my thing from my old home to my new home. I am glad I did this it was hard move and it made my heart feel good to remake this place I now will call home who sayys you can be this old and not move and make it yours is so very wrong it;s about what make your happy and smile and love where you are in this stage of life. Having been very lucky in life with a husband that was a very successful Alpha guy with a heart of gold that I was married to for 44 years before he left me for the other side of life, he gave me the resources to travel, move, build numerous big houses so since the early 70's I've collected a wide range of "antiques" which could almost all be called "folk art" today. Paintings, vintage furniture from different eras, pottery, hooked rugs, quilts, woven pieces, hand painted animals, creatures big and small, beautiful teapots/teacups, figurines, dishes and the like. Whatever caught my eye at the time when we'd go "antiquing" together a million times for amusement! All items filled with MEMORIES of him wrapped in each and every item that have been a part of my life since almost the moment I met him and his loving generous nature and love he had for me and my interests.
I've been told by a few friends (?) that I have too much STUFF, it would drive them crazy and I should get rid of all of it and move into a tiny house and forget those wonderful years I had with a man that was the "love of my life" and you know what I tell them "not going to happen" and then I think quietly "I'll live with this stuff until the day I die!" I also think silently to myself "none of your business what I do with my life, time or what I live with so mind your own business and leave me to live my life the way I see fit!"
Buy what you love, can afford and make life your own! Never listen to anyone else's ideas of what you should do because they're not YOU!

When people come to visit , they’re visiting me , they know what they’re getting before they come , a different expression of me extended to them that hopefully makes them feel welcome .

It is a cat on a bicycle peddling his little paws away. The wheels spin in the wind. It is adorable. They are in novelty catalogues. Hope you put a little shed out there for Desi. Oh, he is so adorable. Great idea about a room for listening. I think you can still find old radio shows you can listen to. You be you - you have old soul. Remember, per the psychology experts, people transfer their own thinking onto others so telling someone's to move on is something they are dealing with. Krishnamurti's book explains it all. table linens, bedroom decor..anything to sew.
I love gardening and have done some for people. I lost my 2 younger siblings and my Mom...all in 9 months in 2021 and 2022. I planted flowers they all liked and the colors they liked as a memorable enjoyment for me, too.

I am drawn to items I have found in Antique Stores that my Grandmother or my Mother had … or something I saw in my Mother’s friend house or their kitchen … Fiesta dishes … the Harlequin coffee cups I would see hanging in my Mother’s friends kitchen … all the different colors hanging on hooks in her glassed white cabinet! I have had two or three boyfriends since I broke up with that former boyfriend and I still haven’t gotten rid of his picture. Why because I keep holding onto to his picture because I know I’ll never love that way again, even though we’ve broken up. He was kindhearted with a dry sense of humor, but he knew when I was sad and needed to be comforted and I meant the world to him. Nobody has ever made me feel that special since him. If one shows up at your door, you’ll know it’s for sure ;) My new favorite trend for decorating in the new place I’m in is just thrifting, and waiting for the perfect piece to come along. I used to be in such a hurry to fill up a space with decor. I want only a few pieces now that I’m older, and a more personally curated space that’s easy for me to care for and keep clean, and also beautiful to me, and hopefully peaceful, and beautiful for others to enjoy.
