The Semmeringbahn route is a major choke point for rail traffic between Vienna and Graz because trains can only go a maximum of around 75 km/h on some of the aharper curves. This is why they are building the Semmering Base Tunnel (something like 27.3 km long!), which will cut the travel time between Vienna and Graz by some 40 minutes. It will be interesting to see what will ÖBB will do with Semmeringbahn; will they keep it as a backup route like what the Swiss did with the Gotthard and Lötschberg lines in Switzerland and the Brenner Pass route between Austria and Italy?

So far ÖBB talks about the new tunnel to be a relief of the Semmering line. Possibly some tourism-oriented and regional services will stay.

    Bahnhof, not Bahnhoff!
