    Today we are going to talk about something very important. Before you know it summer will be here and the last thing you want to do is miss that 4 - 6 week window where you should be getting RIPPED and ready to show off your gains! Am I right? But bulking and cutting goes much deeper than “looking” a certain way at a certain time. A lot of people just kind of fall into the category of “bulking” or “cutting” because they THINK they need to bulk or cut at certain times of the year…which is RIDICULOUS. Let me explain…
    Too Skinny Or Too Fat?
    Now if you’re extremely thin, it obviously makes sense to start bulking and if you are currently overweight, you obviously need to start cutting fat. But what if you belong in neither of these groups? What if you are kind of on the overweight side but you don’t really have a lot of muscle? Or what if you’re on the skinny side but you still hold on to a lot of fat around your stomach and love handles area?
    This is the place where I’m sure the majority of you will fall into and both of these types of “looks” are due to the same reason - not eating enough food. So let’s dive into that first and then be sure to read through to the end of the article as I will give you the most simple advice to follow for cutting and bulking once you have your EATING and WORKOUT PROGRAM under control.
    The Problem With ‘Eating Clean’
    A lot of times when we set a goal to “eat clean”, whether to gain muscle or lose fat, we instinctively reduce calories or just end up eating less because “clean eating” usually involves no snacking on junk throughout the day.
    So even though you’re eating “better”, your overall calories may have gone down, especially if you are not TRACKING THEM. If you’re skinny fat or kind of overweight with not a lot of muscle and are thinking about cutting, you’re just going to make things worse. Your muscles are STARVING for food and now because you VISUALLY see fat all over your body, you think the solution is even LESS calories. However, this is going to send you down a road too many people find themselves on which is LOTS AND LOTS of gym time with little to no results.
    So my advice is simple. Unless your body fat is SUPER high, like over 22% for men and 26% for woman, it doesn’t make sense to restrict your calories and place yourself in a deficit to start cutting. Clean eating and training at this point will actually result in muscle gain and fat loss at the same time which is known as “body recomposition”.
    You see, the only reason why you’re skinny fat or slightly overweight with no muscle tone is because your muscles don’t have the calories & nutrients they need to sustain or repair and grow from training. But once you start feeding them PROPERLY and combine that with a good gym routine, your metabolism will start to increase and that stubborn fat will melt off.
    So for the majority of you it’s not going to be BULKING or CUTTING…it’s going to be EATING CORRECTLY for the first time because now you’re tracking your macros, hopefully with MY CUSTOM MEAL PLAN APP…because it is awesome!
    How Much Weight Should I Gain When I Bulk?
    But what about for those of you who ARE seasoned lifters, eat right and already have a great workout program. If you’ve never seen my video “Bulking: You Are Doing It Wrong”, I suggest you watch it.

      heres my take on bulk first or cut. i think u should bulk first because the more you train the more muscle you gain so your metablism will increase therefore your old bulking calories will now become the maintainance and shoving heaps of food is harder as than cutting as we already naturally burn cals so we have fight throught it by eating more.

      +navid mehdi smart thinking man and you are totally right! More mass = more food to just maintain. Don't you love it when the advice that works is to just eat more? haha :-D

    This is exactly what I needed. I've spent the last 3 months working tirelessly, spending about an hour 6x a week at the gym and have gained little strength and actually lost about 2 lbs. I also cut out all junk foods from my diet: I described this as a "cut' but something didn't feel right. Now I'm going to keep the same limits on my diet just eat more. I have no doubt this will lead to gains.

    I subscribed to you way back when you first started and you had great advice, and I just started watching you again this week and you look better and you're wiser and more knowledgeable. Watching your videos in the past helped mold the physique I have created today. I used to be 5'11/195 lbs and just a ball of meat haha but now I'm 165-170 lbs and pretty ripped and muscular, and I'm way stronger obviously. I do mostly bulgarian style stuff now(Hack dl, jefferson, zercher, etc.) Anyways, just wanted to let you know your videos took part in what I am today and please continue dropping knowledge and educating people the best ways to promote their own health and welness. Thanks and keep up the good work!

    I’m not doubting someone like you with the experience to back it up.
    I lost 60 lbs when I was fat, from 200 lbs to 140 in one year. I’m 5’6”. But I still had a small belly fat. Switched to weights and cardio with further calorie deficit and went down to 130 lbs but didn’t even have a flat stomach.
    Then decided to gain muscles so did more weight training with the 250 calorie plus but gained a lot of belly fat (155 lbs). Then switched to only a 100 calorie surplus 5 days a week and a 500 calorie shortage two days a week (when taking a break from the gym). I’m gaining muscle and sloooooowly loosing belly fat. Not sure if I’ll ever lose that stubborn belly fat. I just finished my 3rd year of my health journey but only one year of real weight training.
    I always watch my macros and I’m getting a well balanced meal with enough protein (1 g per pound body weight).
    I guess my question is if I only can gain 12lbs of muscle a year, that’s 1 lb a month which means just a little over 100 calories a day should do. That means if I eat 500 calories surplus, 400 calories go to fat! Isn’t it?

    Great video Scott. Love how these are short and concise.... So if natural, there is kind of a limit to how big one can get? Would this also apply for strength?

    • @ScottHermanFitness
      @ScottHermanFitness  6 років тому +1

      There is a natural limit, or natural potential you can achieve yes, but it varies from person to person due to genetics etc. It probably applies to strength too. You just have to keep grinding to find it.. never stop pushing to get better though!! Break the limits man!! 💪🏻💪🏻

    Hey thanks for the tips man. I have been working out for 4 years and I roughly gained 15 pounds. Do you think that is good. But i think I would of gained more if I if I ate a lot more food. But I'm still pretty pleased with with how much I have gained. And I don't think I could have gotten this far without you so thank you very much Scott you're the greatest

      You have made great progress Thomas! I see all your photos on the site. Granted you possibly could have gained more if you don't think you were eating enough, but 15lbs of muscle is still a lot! Proud of you man, keep training hard!!

    Great video Scott, I always appreciate how accessible and well-researched your content is! Question for you - if I'm a bit overweight but with poor muscle definition, why is eating enough food so important for muscle growth? My body obviously has fat reserves lying around, and those are theoretically there for the purpose of energy storage. So for my muscles to grow and to lose weight at the same time, why isn't it more effective to go into a calorie deficit and have my muscles rely on burning my fat reserves for energy and growth?

    • @ScottHermanFitness
      @ScottHermanFitness  6 років тому

      That is effective, but really only if you’re a newbie. If you’re not a newbie, even if you have excess fat, it’s still going to be hard for you to build muscle in a deficit. Your fat stores aren’t going to turn that into a surplus, so you still need to be eating enough that your muscles have that extra energy coming in to grow. But like I say, it’s different as a newbie.
      Make sense?

    Thanks for the video, Scott. I’m beginning to cut for the first time and, like everybody, I’m always concerned about losing gains. BF% is around 22 right now, but I don’t look overweight. I always eat clean (good diet, no fast food or sweets), but have always had a hard time losing body fat. Never had a six pack, even when I was a long-distance runner. Would doing high volume workouts be better than cardio if you’re trying to lose fat and keep gains?

    • @ScottHermanFitness
      @ScottHermanFitness  6 років тому +1

      I wouldn't say better, but helpful, sure. The best thing you can do is keep your carbs low, protein high, and maintain INTENSE workouts including strength training to give your muscles a reason to say. That will help maintain as much mass as possible while cutting fat. Post in my forums if you need more help! www.MuscularStrength.com/forum

    Good advice, Scott.
    These past five months, I’ve really started to track my macros closer than ever and am starting to see results like none other.
    Question: Is eating after 10pm a poor decision? I’ve read some stuff around that it lead unwanted fat gains.

    • @ScottHermanFitness
      @ScottHermanFitness  6 років тому +2

      It's amazing what a difference tracking can make. There's really no 'bad' time to eat or a time when you need to put a curfew on your eating. What you might want to do is limit carbs really late at night. Personally I like to snack on leafy greens and/or protein if I get cravings before bed.

    • @BiggDeli
      @BiggDeli 6 років тому

      I will keep note of that. Thanks, Scott, and keep up the GREAT work!!

    Hey Scott, so after watching this video I'm still a bit confused. I have fairly good muscle definition, but I still have a bit of flab on my lower stomache (I've been lifting 2yrs btw). I have been doing a mild cut combined with some extra conditioning, and now I am wondering if that is the right way to go, or if I should be eating at maintinence? Thanks (also sorry if you gave clear instructions in the video and I didn't realize)

    • @ScottHermanFitness
      @ScottHermanFitness  6 років тому

      Well what do you think your body fat % is at the moment? If it's around 20% it's a good idea to keep cutting, but if it's more like 15% then it's time to get back into that lean mass phase! Post in my forums for more help - www.MuscularStrength.com/forum

  • @andrewmacdonald8711
    @andrewmacdonald8711 6 років тому +1

    I think this video was made for someone like me. I've been Lifting for about a year-and-a-half now seeing great results but I'm sitting around 16% body fat in this really weird gray area where I'm not sure if I should be eating less or more. So let me just make sure I grasped the concept, I should be eating at a 250 calorie Surplus for muscle gaining and as a bonus the fat will fall off? Or I should be eating it at 250 calorie deficit? My goal is to be around 12% body fat for the summer. Thanks for the video Scott! theyre really informative and they've really help me on my journey to Fitness.

    • @ScottHermanFitness
      @ScottHermanFitness  6 років тому

      Yes I would stay in a surplus for now, and if you keep it small you will limit fat gain and maybe even shed a little bit if you're only in your second year of lifting. Keep the carbs low-ish and then maybe start a cut abour 4-6 weeks before summer, at which point you should have gained a bit more mass but not too much fat to make the cut too difficult :-) Hope that helps!
