The last ever game for South Melbourne Swans & them playing at the Lake Oval before the move to Sydney the following year in 1982. North Melbourne 15.17.107 (Goals: Good 5, Briedis 3, Dugdale 2, Spencer 2, Demetriou, Hodgeman, Wright) defeated South Melbourne 10.14.74 (Goals: Carroll 4, Browning 2, Foschini 2, John Roberts, Round). The highlights of the South Melbourne vs North Melbourne match on World of Sport is actually the first time that any footage of South Melbourne's last game before the move to Sydney & their last game at the Lake Oval being uploaded on UA-cam I think. So thank you Yellow & Black. 👍🙂

I turned 15 in 81. Love seeing this. The personalities, it was Australialiana personified. Australia and Melbourne in particular is nothing like it once was. You go into the city and you'd think you were in a foreign country. I miss Melbourne as it was and the old WOS and the panel.

They had Jacko and Lane kicking loads of goals in the lower Grades as well...seem to remember thinking that they shooda had BT playing on a Flank.

@@hanajinks1044 That was in 1980. For 1981 Jackson was cleared to Melbourne whilst Lane became a 'fly-in' player down in Tassie without ever getting to the reserves for Richmond.

    Nice upload!
Abysmal ground conditions at local council owned venues and dismal crowds at rundown venues.
Can see why more than half the clubs ended up broke a few years later.

World of Sport was great as was the Footy Panel ...
-Barry Round won the Brownlow in an ordinary side so it was interesting to see him given 3 votes here
-Fitzroy were so good in 81 and 83 and did in fact win the following week. They lost by a kick to Woods in the First Semi - win that and then the Flag (they loved playing Carlton) and it might've been difficult for the Gayfl to Stalinise them.
    - Not so much in evidence here, but Sam's "discussions" with Peter McKenna were hilarious.
    - Very interesting result for their Award. Ashman was a Blues Great, N Daniher is quite simply the best full-back l ever saw and Barker was a Freak, all finishing just ahead of the Brownlow Medallist, Round.
    - When l see that Sunday Comp it always reminds me of John Bourke.

Ashman won nearly every media award that season but finished 3rd in the Brownlow behind Round & Bernie Quinlan, two ex-Bulldogs from Gippsland.

....had a feeling l was neglecting something when l wrote that. If anyone deserved a Brownlow then Superboot did. Amazing that they came from the same area...very sad for Dogs that they were let go...along with a few others.
I was just watching the 83 QF ...win that and Roys ard gonna be playing off against Hawks, having had a weeks rest.

@@hanajinks1044 In that era Footscray kept selling players to stay solvent: they received a transfer fee & didn't have to pay big $ to the player leaving, thus saving $.

Gayfl? That's lovely ... and beat Carlton after playing 3 finals in a row? Yeah, right

      - Honestly Sav, l dunno how Carlton did it during that Era. We barracked hard against them and thought it was hilarious that McLure could get a game. 81 was an incredible season - Cats beat Dons at Waverley for the double-chance- problem for Essendon was that N Daniher was gone and that upset their balance for two years. They'd have thrashed Carlton if they'd met, and while Cats and Woods weren't quite up to it....the Roys were a funny side with an excellent record against that Carlton...not saying they'd have won but they'd have given it a shake.
      - And why should what l said offend you, any more than Pride rounds and whatnot offend me?
