This is by far the best diy bed lift design I’ve seen. Nice work!
Thanks, I appreciate the comment!👍
I’m a garage door tech and the bearings you want are called center bearings, the ones with plates are called end bearings, the tube is 1” od called torsion tube. I’m going to make my bed lift similar using similar parts but add a torsion spring underneath so I can just push up on the bed with 5-10lbs of force and it will go to the ceiling, then pin it out
You will have to let me know how it works out. I had another guy suggest that as well. I think it is a great idea. I wish I would have done it that way in the first place. Cheers!!
How will you decide on a spring or is there enough adjustment just by adding more or less preload on the spring.
This is the best DIY setup I’ve seen. Great idea!
Great job Bill! I've been researching this lift for my trailer build. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see more.
This is the best design I hv ever seen!
Thanks!!
Outstanding, been racking my brain on which way to do the mechanics of lift. Always forget the kiss method. Will be using the strap and bar now, but with unistrut and trolleys for wall track. Nice job
Thanks. I was thinking of using unistrut as well!
Excellent idea, thank you!!!! I think I will be implementing a similar lifting idea into my build
For ease of use, longevity and smoothness of action the strapping should run on rollers where it goes around the end of the frame or the strapping with fray.
This is a great idea!
I was planning on using e track as well but was not aware of the load bars you used, I will be looking to pick some up.
Thanks for sharing !
Glad it was helpful!
I just put my mattress on a magic carpet
Can I suggest you to use four electric cylinders ? They will raise and lower the bed and keep it in place without a brake or a complex mechanic, it's something like $130 for each on Amazon. You just need to select one according to the weight. Also you can make them too, the principle is simple.
Great idea. Thanks for sharing it
You are so welcome!
Stumbled across this....did you know you recreated Lippert's Euroloft 2000 bed lift system? Check Winnebago Revel. Essentially a right angle motor spins one shaft with webbing. They use 2 tracks (in the front) to provide for-aft stability. This is a much more elegant framing solution than the Hippejack. Nicely done!
Thanks you, I will check it out!
Pretty clever. 👍🏻
Thanks
great idea!
Thanks!
Like your set up been looking for ideas for my trailer wondering what you are going to use to crank it up with when finished
Matt, It is still a bit of a work in progress but I think I will use a boat winch handle to crank it up and down. I have a 3/4” nut welded to the end of the shaft so I was going to adapt the boat winch handle and make it removable.
@@billellison thanks for replying would like to see your set up finished hope you put some videos on it you have some good ideas
@@678msf will do, I am hoping to do another one in a week or so.
Since it's lite weight, you can probably use a cordless drill.
They are pretty strong nowadays.
Can you list the parts you used in the description? That way we could make a list of what we need. Thank you. This is an excellent idea and plan.
Done! Thank you for your interest.
@@billellison Thank you so very much.
A quick question, the 2 parts that make up the end of the frame ( aluminum tubing) are they left over from you cutting down the load bars?
I used a total of 4 load bars to complete the project. I cut them to size as it was cheaper than buying stock aluminum. 😀
Works well, but seems overly complicated. Brian Rogers (UA-cam) has a fantastic system that uses pneumatic struts....just push up and pull down....simple.
Re-watching this and had a quick question, why didn’t you trim down the bearing bracket so you could bolt/rivet etc to the frame ?
That would have worked as well, but you would still have to cut holes in the tubing as well. I found this way was a cleaner finish overall.
E-trac for your side to side pieces, your end aluminum is from where? Thanks
They are Erickson E Track load bars
when you put the eye hooks on the rook frame. where those just self tapping or nut and bolt?
I used “rivet nuts” so I could bolt it up.
I would like to see how you attached the pipe to the winch
I found a nut that fit inside the pipe and welded it in there so I could bolt the winch to it.
would a cordless drill on the nut lift the bed?
It would probably be too much for the drill to lift
Where did you get aluminum frame. And or what is it called. thanks Tim
They are called E-Tracks Load bars. There are multiple companies who manufacture them. I purchased mine in Canada from Princess Auto and the manufacturer was Erickson.
Bill you look like your grandpa
where can buy the tools for that?
Hello Eddy, the tools can be purchased at your local hardware stores such as Princess Auto, Home Depot, Harbor Freight, Lowes etc. Cheers!
Bill - thanks again for your ideas - I have now posted my bed video on UA-cam. In the part of my video below you can see that I did not use the loading track but went with metal studs - not sure if this was any better but it did let me have the exact width I wanted.

I do think that bren5275 has got some really good ideas on how he used a 12V, 50 RPM, wiper motor purchased from Amazon for about $80.00. My only tension on the motor is breaking a strap with over stressing but I think that could be overcome with a fuse that would blow before it caused an issue. Your idea on using the Erickson E Track Adjustable Cargo Bars I like the best as it is very stable when locked into the E-Track.

I know one bed design is right for all of us - bren5275 has some skills I don't have but all of these ideas help the community to figure out what will best work in their builds.
Looks really good and I am sure it will serve you well. The rest of your trailer looks like it is coming along quite well too.
