Hello, TAS author here. I'm glad so many have appreciated my project! I never expected so many to see and enjoy it. It really made the countless hours I put into this worth it. Cheers!
It is absolutely incredible what people can do for the projects they're passionate about. It took 4 YEARS to make this? That's my entire degree lol. Kudos to the team that made this.
linkus explaining back in time so well in such a short, concise explanation is incredible -- i don't think i've ever seen someone go through that trick so casually before. can't wait to hear the rest of the explanations here (and the popoff reactions)
He's called Zanto in German (and Xanto in French) because that is just one version to interpret the original Japanese name of ザント (Zanto). It's similar with Midna who is called Midona in French. The localisers will probably just choose whatever flows better in the respective language.
Everyone always says TP early game is “slow” (or flat out boring) and I’m not saying anyone is wrong, but it’s something I’ve always really liked about the game. There’s just something really relaxing about playing through a little slice of life for a day in the life of the farm hand in this otherworldly forest village. I feel like it would be a really nice life to live and the escape from the real world is just…nice.
I get where you’re coming from but most people just wanna play a Zelda game, not a slow slice of life fantasy story, we want a sword and a shield so we can fight things and solve dungeons🤷♂️
I totally agree… Most of the time, we don’t get to take a look or sometimes even the idea of how Link was before he took upon the role of the Hero… TP showcased just that perfectly and it's such a nice little reprieve from the common hack and slash action games that LoZ games commonly take, as much as that is very fun and all… Makes this version of Link seem much more relatable than usual…
Honestly. I always thought people just meant the bug smashing especially in Hylia lake and the back and forth for iron boots and the amount of time it takes to actually get to the second dungeon. I never imagined the people actually hated the very beginning farm life part. Besides for the annoying kids getting in trouble and the girl just taking your horse for "mistreatment". That part actually felt very fast and just enjoyable to see Link go from a country life to actually being exposed to Hyrule.
Thematically, I adore it, and I think it really raises the stakes when they give you time to actually get to know the village children and Ilia so that there’s more of an incentive to want to save them, and it really hammers home the idea that Link is a normal person who isn’t just saving the world because it’s his destiny, but because it’s always been part of his nature to want to help others, but after the first couple times, it’s definitely a slog. I’m glad it was included, I think the game is better off with it, but I also understand the complaints
46:25 That was definitely one of the coolest things I've ever seen in a speedrun. Just pure, unadulterated, unapologetic swag. I also had no idea you could use the bow on Ganon. The first time my brother got to him we spent forever trying to figure out how to open him up (not even thinking to use the wolf for quite a while) until finally noticing the action command for grabbing him. Hard to believe we never thought or tried just shooting the gem with the bow, seems very obvious, but we were just kids I guess.
I really love how the doors open in this game it looks so cool! And did you guys know that if you go through a door twice then there is no dirt falling down anymore! Cool little detail
@@kaycee7738they replay back inputs that were done at frame by frame. It takes 4 years because you’re literally playing each input at at frame not including fuckups, repeats and whatever else. The editing is literally just put a screen recorder on, put it into an editor, add whatever you want or nothing at all.
It’s really interesting watching this stuff as a studying game designer, because all this sequence manipulation and the glitched etc gives an interesting glimpse into how Nintendo codes the game.
Used to read the author's notes on tasvideos, but have since been lacking the time. Thanks for condensing it and allowing us to grasp the impressiveness of the authors!
What I always find funny is how a tas will sometimes do things that doesn't look like precision but instead makes it look like the original game is just really broken, like how easy it seemed they were going through doors and gates.
I love watching speedruns of old games like this. Where a combination of precision controls and spaghetti code allows you to just abuse the hell out of everything. With newer stuff people don't write as much spaghetti because they're not trying to save every possible byte of memory and processor cycle, so there's less to abuse.
42:23 They actually did that for me in my first playthrough. You’re telling me that I performed a TAS strat that Linkus didn’t even know about on my first playthrough?
51:04 You actually got it backwards, the original Japanese name of Zant is ザン (Zan - To), So it was the English Translation who got rid of the o, because it didn't sound english enough.
32:25 I remember doing a glitch in this game where I would take off the iron boots before landing and be able to walk around on the magnetic walls at normal speed without the iron boots. I guess it's not practical for the TAS for some reason, but it's definitely nice in a casual playthrough.
26:37 i think he grappled there to save time it would have taken to let go from the grassy wall, since if you grapple a climbable surface right at the bottom it just instantly places link on the ground
15:36 actually no, it's the flag getting reused. So instead of reading "oh you're in this boss state", it reads it as you having 22 monkeys (or something around that) which causes it to have the max
This is perfect content and I mean that with all of my soul. Truly a pleasure to watch something like this and the breakdowns are perfectly expressed for somebody like me who is it familiar with the mechanics of curtain games. Thank you so much for the amazing content over the years I can’t express how entertaining you are.
27:40 this is incorrect. This is not Map Glitch, it is Universal Map Delay (UMD). In this tas, you don't actually get the Map Warp ability you normally get in kakariko gorge. Because of this, you can't do the standard Map glitch. Instead, the tas calls midna, selects the Warp option, and after selecting a location, mashes the A and B buttons extremely fast. This confuses the game and puts you in a Map glitch like state without needing the Map Warp ability
The key difference is that when you do UMD you need some external trigger to interrupt the warp for you, in that case the snowpeak intro cutscene does it by playing while you try to open the map screen. This is why the bulblin camp bomb boost is in the run; there's no cutscene trigger to use UMD on in the bulblin camp. (The bomb boost on its own is probably faster than the RTA map glitch method, but there could've been other better uses of bombs if that one wasn't needed)
Normally I hate the typical “well actually” comments but I appreciate these informative correction ones! Didn’t realize it was done slightly differently. For anyone reading through the comment section and to simplify this whole thing, the way to obtain the glitched state is different than an Any% RTA run, like User-cm8 explained above, but the effect you obtain from doing the glitch is still the same, and what was described in the video is still accurate regarding that! Enjoy the rest of the video! ^^
32:01 you can actually Clip through that Gate as Wolf Link if you stand in the perfect position. im very surprised this speedrun doesnt use that trick.
required is just another word for optional it would seem with stuff like the 2nd skull kid... and i love seeing speedrunners break the games, seeing TAS over break games is one of the things that give me joy. edit: linkus, lets be real, arent speedruns in general just a massive flex?
17:07 I can tell you that this is called "Rupee dive", and that there are humans who do a very similar trick called "midna dive" on the wii version of the game to get into lakebed.
11:08 I feel like the TAS from Mario 64 is another good example for how brake sliding works as well. But the physics is different compared to Zelda games.
Zant is named Zanto because it's closer to the original Japanese name. No Japanese syllables (aside from ん / ン) end in consonants. Zant's name is written ザント, which ends with the letter for "to". So if anything, the name was made more English for the English version.

My real question is why does the Boss flags gives you all the monkeys as "oh you have already beaten this dungeon", but the gale boomerang mini boss is still there
