In the world of real cameras the resolution stated in the specs is true resolution: a count of the number of photosites on the sensor. Simple as that. Whether there are truly 40 million photosites on the P20's sensor isn't something I claim to know. All I'm stating is that if the sensor is a true 40MP res, there ought to be a notable increase in detail over what would be found in a 10MP photo. That's what makes all this talk about "f/1.7" and now "f/1.5" lens apertures for "low-light photography" ridiculous. Tiny lenses squeezing tiny amounts of light to tiny image sensors provide equivalent light to ~f/16 in 35mm format. f/16 is nobody's idea of a "low-light" aperture. (And in fact there is no such thing. Handheld photography isn't meant to be done in the dark. That's what flashguns and tripods are for.)

Because 40 million pixels are actually there, by using algorithms it can produce a normal 40MP photos - in fact when you shoot raw on this thing it spits out 40MP files instead of 10. However, when producing a 10MP jpeg image, 4 pixels are combined and treated as 1 - This allows much faster software processing and HDR with no shutter lag without loss of details. When you zoom into the subject, extra resolution is utilised to interpolate lost details and achieve lossless zoom, and up from 3x the information from telephoto lens is also used to zoom in even further. 40MP photos look bad because without dedicated ISP it will take too long to process such high-res files so presumably Huawei decided to skimp software processing to make it quicker... most likely NOT because the original files have poor quality.

Despite the P20's inability to deliver true 40MP photos, the review conclusion is that "Photos are where [the P20] really shines." although the "40 megapixel label is a bit misleading." But that's fine because the camera performance is better than the previous model. That is a reviewer lowering the potential buyers' expectations and putting a positive spin on a criticism. That doesn't sound to me like a review; that sounds like marketing is the guise of a review.
XMACHINAv2 But It IS capable of delivering "true" 40MP pictures. Like I said in my previous comment, it only looks bad in daylight because of poor jpeg processing (and what's even more interesting is 40MP images in low-light look all right because stronger NR and sharpening are applied to create slightly smoother images). Find and download a sample of dng file from P20 Pro, edit it yourself and see it on your laptop, obviously it will not be as impressive as a picture from a DSLR with the same resolution, but details look pretty darn good for a smartphone - and obviously it will look much more detailed than any 12MP photo other smartphones can produce... in fact I already compared the raw samples from P20 Pro to my Mate 10's raw output - it indeed was miles ahead in terms of details. And finally, if a reviewer is doing a PR, they need to mention it somewhere in their video. GSMArena didn't, though, and that should tell you something.
Oh how wish i can get the p20 pro . For me the pro would be the camera, The A.I help to boost the images to look stunning and enhanced the color, but of course you can switch off the A.I to get natural looking images. The 10mp images does look great unless we zoom it too far. But really i would use that 10mp photos to post in social media because nobody would zoom images too far in social media. Hope they can fix the 24mp front camera via software update because it does produce an over exposure images. I don't like the notch (Essential started the notch but Apple did start the trend) though but luckily it can be disabled in the phone, and shame about the 3.5mm jack, it would be nice to have that without carrying extra dongle every time. And the SD card slot would be nice too because just like DSLR camera it would be easier to transfer photos with SD Card to computer. And the glass display looks nice but they should have the wireless charging, though i don't mind that feature. And also the 4K doesn't have the stabilizer but for me i wouldn't use the 4k because it always take so much size and if i would use it i will use it with tripod to record video for stills. And i think the price should be lowered a bit since the Kirin970 consider as older processor.

I don't like the notch (Essential started the notch but Apple did start the trend) though but luckily it can be disabled in the phone, and shame about the 3.5mm jack, it would be nice to have that without carrying extra dongle every time. And the SD card slot would be nice too because just like DSLR camera it would be easier to transfer photos with SD Card to computer. And the glass display looks nice but they should have the wireless charging, though i don't mind that feature. And also the 4K doesn't have the stabilizer but for me i wouldn't use the 4k because it always take so much size and if i would use it i will use it with tripod to record video for stills. And i think the price should be lowered a bit since the Kirin970 consider as older processor.
