  • Since Ableton Live 12 was just released yesterday, you probably already have Live 12 installed if you bought the upgrade. You will notice an option update your Live Packs at the bottom of the browser. While you should update them without a doubt, if you plan to keep Live 11 or earlier installed alongside Live 12, please watch this video first to avoid issues. If not, you might discover that the previous version of Live will no longer support your presets.
    Before following my instructions, please close Ableton Live 12, and delete the Library.cfg file for Live 12 to make it work as described here: help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/art...
    Don't worry if you've already updated your Live Packs; I'll also go over how to resolve the issue where presets that were in Live 11 no longer function after you updated them in Live 12.

    Thank you for this! I did not know that this was an issue that could happen since I do not remember any issues when upgrading from Live 10 to 11. I'm going to start doing this though since it seems like a good future-proofing method.

    Very good pointing this out. It think it would be great if there was a video with the more general topic of keeping an older version next to 12. How to proceed on installation, which choices to maken and where, to prevent your old work and resources from being (irreversibly) changed or even deleted.

      Thanks for the idea. I'll mull it over, but it sounds like a good topic to cover seeing how much interest there is in this video. I might cover how to preserve Live Projects for the future as well.

    Hey everyone! It seems Live 12 simply ignores the new Library path, so you need to delete the corresponding file as the very first step. Following along my explanation then works as expected. I've linked the knowledge base article by Ableton on how to do this as a video card. Here it is also: help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/360009323040-Resetting-Live-s-Library

    Hi there, thx for the info. On my system (MacBook Pro 2018 with Ventura system) after creating the folders as you described the packs are still updating inside the Live11 Factory folder. But after quiting Live12 and manually copying al the packs from the Live11 Factory folder to the newly created Live12 Factory folder, restarting Live12 and then choose to update the packs they will do so inside the right Live12 Factory folder.

    • @sonicbloomtuts
      @sonicbloomtuts  3 місяці тому

      Thanks for adding this information. I did actually quit Live 12 in between and probably should have mentioned it in the video. I always do this just in case the data isn't updated otherwise.

    • @SyNRG
      @SyNRG 3 місяці тому +1

      @@sonicbloomtuts He says he manually copied the packs over, not just restart, which also wasn't mentioned and seems to be a key part of the process because I ran into issues as well

    • @sonicbloomtuts
      @sonicbloomtuts  3 місяці тому

      @@SyNRGYou're right. Thanks for the heads up. This is new in Live 12 and looks like a bug to me, because if you set a new path for the Live Library it should be recognised and applied, but isn't even after a restart. This wasn't the case in previous versions of Live, so I didn't even consider checking if it still worked. My mistake.

    • @sonicbloomtuts
      @sonicbloomtuts  3 місяці тому

      @@SyNRGI've added a link card before the instructions in the video. The Library.cfg file needs to be deleted first to make it work as expected. Otherwise even though the path is set to a different Library, it still points to the one for Live 11, which certainly shouldn't be the case.

    I changed the Factory Pack location, and then when I updated one of the packs, it updated in the folder it was already in, not the new Live 12 Factory Pack folder. Only new packs seem to go in the new folder

    I replied to a comment, but my reply has gone (or even the comment?). I found it worthwhile to mention an example of presets gone in subsequent versions of packs. I found it in the Knowledge Base, Preset changes to the Core Library in Live11. I was looking for a preset used in a remake video. So in some versions you could use in some not. Unless....?(I think after reading the comments).

    • @sonicbloomtuts

      Yes, this can be the case. I've gotten a lot of follow up questions on this tutorial all over social media. I'm preparing to release another one next Tuesday answering as many of them as I can. It's basically going to be all about file structure and management in Ableton Live incl. how to make Live Projects accessible years down the road.

    • @fritsvanzanten3573
      @fritsvanzanten3573 3 місяці тому +1

      @@sonicbloomtutsIndeed, I realized I had no clue about that kind of things (set vs project for instance) and only today started delving into this. I never gave me any problem though, except for when I moved things and clips were missing in sets, so now I never move things again. I only do this for a hobby, and only when you become a somewhat more advanced user you start to understand the usefulness and even importance of being organized (in the beginning you hardly know what there is that needs being organized, using only three or four tracks, no audio clips editing etc.). But by then it's a mess already. Which wasn't a problem for a long time. But being organized from the start is a large benefit, so an instructive video would be great, I can only applaud it,

    • @sonicbloomtuts
      @sonicbloomtuts  3 місяці тому

      @@fritsvanzanten3573I think pretty much everyone makes similar mistakes in the beginning and risks losing files. Even people using Live for years sometimes still do. Knowing how the file structure and management works in Live is essential, so thanks for the idea.
