"Blues Stories" Ep. 1: NICK CURRAN

- Episode 1 documents three short Nick Curran Stories. Nick was an incredible performer from Biddeford Maine my home State. He played with Ronnie Dawson, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Gary Primich, Lou Ann Barton and many more. He is an inductee to the Austin Music Hall of Fame and has won many other prestigious awards. He was almost as well known for his producing and recording abilities as his guitar playing and singing. Nick is missed by many and I hope these stories bring a few smiles to the faces of his close friends and family that loved him so dearly.

Asked him for his pick after a show, and he looked at me like I was crazy, but he gave it to me. Very humble.
I'm sure players were scared when Nick walked in. In my humble opinion, his loss was VERY tragic to the future of Blues music. His version of Freddie King's"Lonesome Whistle Blues" is just phenomenal.Nick, along with Sean Costello were the future of the Blues. Both can't ever be replaced. The folks at Lone Wolf say your a good guy. Thought I'd add that so you know how they feel about you.
Glad you mentioned Sean Costello, one more sad loss. Saw him live in Chicago and dug every minute of the show.
I worked at the doctor who treated him for cancer. He was was such a cool guy. So sad that they are both gone now.

Great stories about Nick. Those of us that were lucky enough to know him here in Austin definitely miss him. He was just as genuinely friendly as he was talented, and he absolutely loved to turn people on to new music.

Nick, Raf and I would come back to my place after hours. Nick would pick up my guitar. He would say something like "remember when Robert Smith did All Along The Watchtower?" He would then play whatever he mentioned verbatim. We would call it Dr. Velvet's Name That Tune.
It became evident to me that anything he could remember in his mind - he could immediately play. Unreal. Complete genius. I'm so very lucky to have those memories.

Saw him play live on several occasions and was completely blown away each time. The world was truly robbed when cancer took this guitar master.

Thanks Dude. Nick was the most badass of all the badasses. 👍👍 one time, his amp broke when he was backing Lazy Lester in Austin, at Justine’s. So he just plugged into an acoustic200h bass amp I had in my trunk. Nobody knew anything different 🤘Lazy Lester thought it was great 💰
I just listened to the whole story didn’t even know it was Jason Ricci until the end.
Nick was a bad dude for sure musical freak of nature.
I picked up Nick's "Doctor Velvet" recording in 2004 without having heard a note of it. Maybe I'd heard mention of him or maybe
it was just the cover photo but I went for it and I came out a winner. It knocked me out. At the time it seemed that Nick had his
own sound. His singing gave off the vibe that he was cock sure of himself, and when "Player" came out it was a no brainer. Then
I lost track of him. I think the last time I took note of Nick is when I saw a video of him backing up Gary Primich.
Those are really great records.
I still have that home-made upright bass here in Portland. Was made by Kris Eckhart of King Memphis at a mutual friend's carpentry shop. Not by Nick, but he fine-tuned it. In between the blues open mic thing and Ronnie Dawson, Nick, then 19, pulled into my driveway 'cause I had old cars too. "Nick Curran and the Sideburners" was suddenly hatched w/me and the bass player, brave sole played "The Bassonite". Named as such given it's sound deadening front made outta masonite. We tore it up at the Free St. Taverna and other holes for a several yrs. straight. The Taverna owner would send him upstairs to drink given his age. He and I would hang for hours there just laughing and being boisterous. Like you say he was awkward, so it was a great outlet for his young self. And yes, he could play any damn song if he heard it once...wtf?!?!!! The 3 of us connected brilliantly, like we were a part of each other. We only practiced ONE time at the beginning. We had too much fun and had zero pretentions of being perfect. He was the glue we all stuck to musically. Thanks! Oh, and your name sounds familiar...

I was lucky to have seen him once with The T Birds !! He was very laid back for that show but strictly in the groove .

My dad played in Big Meat Hammer. Made his own guitars and amps.

I’ve seen that dresser drawer being played on stage at the Elvis Room in Portsmouth , that gig was with Ronnie Dawson , wich he wound up going on the road with- I know lots of people that know nick, he was from shapleigh/ I’m from Wells, full respect. I never really got out in Portland, I went out to Los Angeles-

Probably 14 when he started in to the open mic and jam scene.
When he was going through cancer there was a fundraiser at a bowling alley that had iirc 7 double bass slapping on stage.
