- Team,
Today were working on a chlorinator for the wave pool. The booster pump motor has locked up, and needs to be replaced. I also break down how the system operates and send chlorine to the pool.

I wish more engineering videos started with the lockout system, just... professionalism on display :)
forgot the tag, but a good start
We get fined if we don't and second I don't trust stupid people from turning stuff on they have no business touching
@@fischb22 he had a sticker on the lock, not sure if that counted as the tag or not.
@@NotAJosh To my (admittedly limited) knowledge, you only need it to say that it is locked out and to have a way to identify the individual that has locked it out (saying "The Pool Guy" probably isn't enough but it could be depending on the environment). I work at a manufacturing plant and we generally don't use tags, just the lockout label and the second label has our first initial, last name and employee id number and that is sufficient for us.
My lockout today was a big effin ziptie. Was just a household disconnect but still! LOTO.
Everyone talking about the nice LOTO lock, but I'm having Lock Picking Lawyer flashbacks.
Totally agree, I've seen him pick the Master Lock version, but not this one.
Nobody cares if its easy picking. You just don't try to take it off
... 3 is binding
@@gekkedirkie agreed. If for some reason someone wants the lock off they’ll just cut it off hah!
@@HiddenResolve ... nice click out of 4
Anybody else get excited when you see someone LOTO and actually do safety!?
Excited is an insufficient word for the emotion.
One of my first jobs out of high school was working at a pool as a life guard but also helped out with maintenance to earn some extra money. We used chlorine tabs as well (don't remember the brand) but our system just had a seal tube like hopper with a threaded cap that was inline with the flow. Had to close the valves in order get the top off and if you didn't do it right you got a blast of super chlorinated water, or if the last person forgot to open the inflow valve the gas would build up pressure and fill the room.
Thats a great lockout. I shocked the HVAC tecs I had my house because I have a lockout on top of my breaker box, when I work on stuff in my house I lock it up... I had a bad experience with my Dad almost accidentally to frying me in highschool.
Me too bro. Mu dad turn on the fuse and i had a blqck thing inside my fingers
Lol, I've had electricians who kept the breaker on.
yep go breaker lockouts at home here too, just 3D printed ones for me, which is enough to stop the wife/kids flicking the breaker. obvs if I did this stuff professionally Id buy proper ones.
Those shaft seals work bc they form a floating seal with a layer of water between the polished metal face and the polished ceramic face of the portion that presses into the seal plate. That’s why pumps leak if they are run dry often the polished faces get hot and deform if run dry.
Glad to hear wreck-it-Ralph found a great career after his game got shut down.
Jokes aside, it’s very clear you know what you’re doing, your voice is awesome :)
Yay LOTO and another great maintenance video! Thank you for all the behind the scenes videos you make, aside from the increasing desire to go visit the water park, it makes me appreciate all the engineering and maintenance that goes into keeping the attractions operational for everyone to enjoy.
That is a cool lockout device on that fuse.
Yes its the lockout tag out kit
not a fuse :)
@@actassii6362 You are correct of course, it's a breaker. Sorry, it's just common parlance to call them fuses.
@@teslafreak calling mcb/cbs fuses is not a common thing for educated people
@@actassii6362 I'm not sure if you meant to sound like an asshole there or not; but it would be accurate to say that people educated *in the field of electronics* don't call them fuses.
People who are not (myself included) do occasionally call them that because it is in point of fact a colloquial term for them from back when the device that had shut off your electronics was indeed a fuse instead of a breaker.
Nice LOTO lock
I audibly said the same exact thing lol
*triggered in OSHA 10*
Really like that his lock says "the pool guy"
I think i would speak for everyone in this case, Could we please get some on-ride videos for the slides 👀
^^^^^ yes
Or on ride 👀
If you know the name of the park you can get a nice compilation of all slides on the Tuberides channel - also for the sister park.
That's not this channel bud.
For some reason this channel has such satisfyingly content !
I know right? i'm an electrician and this guy is fun to watch! something totally different i reckon lol
@@HamiltonMechanical Agreed !
Love to see proper use of a lockout
I worked with accu tab before, I love it, you should make sure you stack your pucks nicely you’ll get better control and flow. Also make sure you clean out the inside once a year or you’ll get calcium buildup and it’s a pain to clean. I’ve done pool work before out by Chicago love your stuff
Nice lockout tag.
Didn't see how you put the wet end back together but the ceramic should go towards the motor then the sprung graphite part engages the polished side of the ceramic... Did two of these recently for my spa opening...
Tom Scott got me hooked on your videos :)
Whoops wrong whip… lol. People are loving that lock out. Def would have done it hot with that terminal bar there. Easy breezy. But people are loving it so good on you! Had you not done that everyone would be up in arms too.
I've learned from past comments. Show the LOTO or in never happened.....🤣
That's a nice mile marker sign you've got hanging on the wall there! 😉
I've worked somewhere they says it uses lockout/tagout for 7 years. THIS is the first time i've ever seen one used... Yes, not at work.
I have nothing to do with pools, but find any engineering videos fascinating...🤷♂️😁
Always happy to see an upload!!!
I like the mile marker. 😂😂😂
Nice Lockout/Tagout CFR 1910.147, and 1910.333. Nice redone box with relays, and new contactors!
Was intimidating the word you was looking for 2:57 😄❤️
It’s not an “actuator”. It’s just a simple Irritrol Irrigation Valve.
This is true. Thanks for the clarification
It’s still classed as an actuator :) both are right!
I just learned about those LOTO breaker locks from lock picking lawyer the other day and as an electrician I’ve never wanted to buy something so fast.
Kits are inexpensive on Amazon
@@thepoolguy I saw, but I placed an order straight through Masterlock. 3 of each breaker type lockout and 3 locks. It’ll be way safer than putting a piece of electrical tape on each breaker.
Crazy stuff happened at splash town this weekend.
Unfortunately yes.
@@thepoolguy what happened?
I used to work in the gold mines here in Australia and my job was working on the water pumps but ours ran by fuel
is there a way of mitigating the water splash say by a clear piece of vynl over the top? the ridges on the float ball are spraying the slurry around..
My question is do you get a strong chlorine smell from that tub? Once you mix water with those tablets doesn't the odor get so strong to cause it to become an irritant?
No, not really. In work we have huge electrochlorination units and they don’t make much of a smell. I mean, it still smells of chlorine but not massively.
The chlorine smell is caused by a chemical reaction of the chlorine oxidizing organic molecules, creating what we call chloramines. This is the reason most pools ask for you to shower before entering the water, to reduce the amount of organic matter on your body.
Watch the Mark Rober video where he tests chlorine odor before and after it mixing with urine.
@Exploring With Dark Dreamz it can be a combination of things. We monitor what's called TDS and Combined Chlorine. Both of these will affect how the water feels, smells and even tastes. High TDS make the water look dull and smell like feet. Combined chlorine make the pool smell heavily of chlorine. Its something that pool professionals monitor and mitigate, but not all do.
Is there also an acid feeder because of the high ph of cal hypo? Also, what are the calcium levels at near the end of the season?
Yes, we use pumps for acid and pH balance. Calcium levels are maintained under 400 all summer long by natural water replacement
I'm curious; what qualifications are required for this sort of work?
I assume electrician would be one?
and plumber
I've always wanted to own an industrial motor. Preferably vintage.
Everyone talking about the lock on the fuse thing and I'm just thinking about the missed opportunity to say the word BALLCOCK! :P
What’s the name of the chlorine tabs you are using? Can they be used in a residential pool chlorinator? I like that they don’t have conditioner in them to better control CYA. Love your videos!
How do you like the accu tab system? My aquatic center uses pulsar and I absolutely HATE it! Weekly to daily problems with the hoppers clogging, sensors sticking and flooding out the chlorine room.. been Trying to talk them into switching to accu tab, seems like a more simple and efficient system.
Can’t imagine the pump seal lasting very long on that pump with all the concentrated chlorine slurry it pumps. That particular seal definitely didn’t look good but at least the bellow on the carbon side looked intact. Would probably have fewer issues if the pump was pushing instead of pulling. Or at least had a way of rinsing the housing, impeller, and seal with fresh water before shutting off. Also, how are the chlorine fumes from the open slurry tank even remotely tolerable?
Chlorinator? I never knew there was such a thing! We in India chlorinate our pools manually, kuch chucking in the granulated chlorine, calculated according to the volume
Great fuse lock.
Only thing i would do is using fully insulated electrical screwdrivers and always double check the power is off regardless if you have turned it off at the mains, Would hate to see you hurt. But as always your content is fantastic.
I kinda expected the camera to go through the slide at the end
That chlorinator is full of gold. $4 a tab retail these days!!
Excelente usando bloqueo y candadeo!!!!
You disconnected the wrong wires at first didn’t you???
I can't get anything past some team members can I? Yup, disconnected the signal power from chemical controller.
Nice information
Chlorinators are my nemesis.
The pump looks like the exact same one we have on our pool lol.
The box could a bit neater but its save and it works
yay lock out tag out!!!!! osha approves lol
7:44 Is there anything special about this motor or why is there a sticker on it that it is illegal to be used in residential installations in California? Seems a bit odd to me.
California has some weird laws.
Similar pucks as my aerobic septic uses. Calcium Hypochlorite. Can be quite unstable if get to hot and because its an oxidizer you can't mix it with anything combustible. The ones I use are 2 5/8" x 1" or about 5 oz each. Keeps the yard watered well! 💩💩
Are pump motors rebuilt or do new ones get purchased?
Anything below 10hp is typically a recycle. All motors larger can be rehabbed with relative savings.
@@thepoolguy Bearings and wet ends/seals can be had for most of these relatively cheaply, beyond those about the only other thing that might go bad is the capacitor(s) provided you don't have corrosion issues. A little GoogleFu should find the parts.
@Exploring With Dark Dreamz this one received some chlorine water, it's was all locked up internally. Plus, it's a cheap replacement.
i wanna see the slides run but with water at the start just to see what it looks like
What happens when you go on vacation? I'd there anyone else that works at your park?
Cool shit like the piping videos
I managed a 250,000 gal pool and we used a chemical pump from myers that would pump liquid chlorine (like Clorox) from a 500gal storage tank into the return line to the pool. The pump was very easy to adjust with one little knob and it worked flawlessly for years. This thing looks over complicated
Liquid chlorine is for chumps.
@@thepoolguy it worked perfectly. Way better than an overcomplicated pile of pipes and wires and way less expensive than tablets
Chlorine and water is hard on metal seal tight fittings. Carflex and plastic fittings are much better in that environment.
Those ceramic seals should be facing each other
The white side on the one half and the black shiny side should be touching When placing those seals
Was the motor single phase or three phase?
Single phase 120
@@thepoolguy 7 hours later when laying in bed at 11:47pm I realize what a stupid question I asked. You literally showed the process of locking out a 1 phase breaker lol. These are the things I think about as an electrician when I should be sleeping, Kinda surprised the manufacturer used a single phase motor over 3 phase. I’m sure they have their reasons since they are the engineers.
@Exploring With Dark Dreamz this motor does have both
I'm sure you've been told this before but to my English ears, your accent sounds similar to Joe Rogan 😁
Stabilized VS Un-Stabilized chlorine. What is a better choice? I’ve been using stabilized but my gut tells me I should be using un-stabilized.
Are you testing and adjusting once or more per day? If not, stabilized is the way to go.
@@RobertSzasz I was using the Frog Leap system but this year I switched over to a chlorinator. I think this is the better way to go. Also less money and work.
What level do you keep your chlorine at
For most pools 2 to 3ppm fac. For the kid attractions, 3 to 5 ppm fac.
@@thepoolguy CYA 50-60?
@@ChrisEpler no more than 10ppm on Cya and only in big pools. No cya in kids pools.
I am getting air intake into our pump how to diagnose
Do you have a flooded volute, and have you purged the air from the top of the volute?
You may also check that your strainer basket is not the cause, sometimes those gaskets can leak. If not, check bolts.
Why’s the LOTO lock hasp plastic?
It sits well protected inside a breaker box, not like it's hanging out on an industrial shop floor where it would get knocked off by accident. Or are you worried about people breaking off LOTO tags?
@@pepperypeppers2755 I’d be concerned with the ease of forced removal. I mean the shackle on the padlock. Black piece. Not the breaker lock
@@_ohmz_electric does LOTO really need to be that secure? Someone needs to know they are screwing up, not be totally stopped from malice.
Its just to stop someone from accidentally turning the breaker back on. its not really to secure anything.
How much would a degree level qualified electrical engineer be looking to earn in the us in this kind of field? I would love to make the move out but not sure on the numbers. A
Can you do a few real time videos to see if people like them or not
What was the lock for
so nobody turns the power on while he's elbow deep in the electronics/mechanics
It’s a LOTO (Lock Out, Tag Out) lock, it’s to prevent someone from turning to breaker back on while he’s working on the equipment. The idea is only he has a key to remove the lock.
What's the difference between calcium hypochlorite and sodium hypochlorite
Hypochlorite is a negative ion, so you need something positive to get it to form a crystal structure (which can then be smashed together into a puck). Ionic sodium and ionic calcium can both do that.
Sodium is very good at dissolving into water, and it won't really interact with anything in the solution once there
Calcium, when mixed with large amounts of another ion called hydroxide (i.e. when in basic solution), interacts with the hydroxide to leave the solution, crystallize, and fall to the bottom. This makes the solution more acidic.
Calcium also won't necessarily dissolve quite as readily, which could help control the addition of hypochlorite, but I'm not quite as sure.
@@0xEmmy I use calcium hypochlorite, is that why my water always goes acidic
The original seal was installed backwards
*LOTO* ❤️
To put a GoPro on a tube and send it down a waterslide
Okay, no one else saw that stray ground wire for the valve?
I have "your papi" on my lock.
Get some WAGO connectors and you'll never want to mess with a wire nut ever again.
completely distracted by mile marker 69
You show LOTO but no cover on an energized panel is a no no!
Are you talking about the panel I was working on? I was testing voltage out and other circuits. I closed after the video ended.
