Young Man I agree with You... Men get off that couch and stop sitting on Your AS?.. because this fellow just showed You what Yoh can do if You put Your mind to it. I love his no quit attitude and because of it finished a true perfection restoration of an old Japanese knife..,,,, my hat is off to You for a superb job. Keep it up and maybe You can get the other men up.
Thank you very much!
Yeah, my goal is to motivate people to start doing things with their hands!
Who are you telling what to do ? Div.
Making a video on UA-cam isn't doing anything productive, making a video on UA-cam and getting paid is called free money money that you didn't work for,
@@oyesimon8112 Right? the same goes for writing software, or literature, or research, or digital artwork you didnt do anything you dont deserve to make any money from it. There should be no money in instruction, entertainment, or anything not physically tangable to the person viewing it.
But he did this awesome knife restoration while sitting his ass on the couch!
When working on a Japanese style knife with a flat side and a beveled side, the thing to keep in mind is that there really isn't a flat side. The urasuki & uraoshi combine to make the blade cut more effectively. The urasuki is a slight concavity in the "flat" side of the blade that reduces friction and helps keep food slices from sticking to the knife.
The concavity on the "flat" side also aids in sharpening.
Hey there, guys!
Thanks again for watching my video and for dropping a comment here as well!

Also if you wish to buy yourself whetstones and a holder you’ll find the link to ones I use!
Cheers!
Can you make a video of how you get your knife that super sharp
Very well done indeed! A great restoration and your jokes were so bad I had to chuckle. I also like the fact you left the bits in where it went wrong.
Thanks, Mark!
Awesome. My first restoration took more than 6 months. Every square cm I got right just made the rest look even worse. It takes on a life of its own. Then the sharpening - something else that can take a lifetime to master. Restoring a Yanagi-ba now; two months in, fingers raw. I thank the universe for every knife that is saved. Thank you for sharing!

He deserves a novel price
He deserve hand job from who ever
ima steal that, and put that into my rezz macro!
I’ve watched dozens of restoration videos and I throughly enjoyed this one. It’s amazing what can be accomplished with hand tools, elbow grease and determination to complete a vision of the final product. Nice job.
Thank you for the kind words, Steve! I'm glad you like it!
From this little line cook's perspective, I would say a Deba is basically a multi-use butcher's knife. Imagine a meat cleaver shaped like a kitchen knife. They're sturdy and built with that little stout groove on them to handle thick fish bones. They all taper off at the tip, however, so you can use them for small fish as well.
So badass you restored an old school one though, in case you read this.
Thanks, Marco! I do read all my comments! And answer most of them.
Japanese handle maker here. drill the holes in the wood before shaping and glueing. Line up the holes with a dowel or something similar covered in beeswax so the epoxy doesn’t stick to it, just to keep the holes lined up when you epoxy
This is how most people get started knife making. Rehandling an old knife or making a handle for a blade they bought from a knife making supply company like Jantz or USA knife.
Generally, you don't shape the handle until after you have it glued to the tang. If you make the handle oversized, you don't run into the problem of the hole being off center.
Awesome dude your videos are what actually inspired me to get off my couch and start restoring old tools. I didn't have any tools when I started and I still only use hand tools on my kitchen table. Thanks for all the inspiration.
I am glad you inspired to make something!

dig it! beautiful. and you're right, it doesn't take a shop, it takes motivation! get it!
Thanks!
I like your optimism I enjoyed the restoration.
that is such beautiful work that it literally brings tears to my eyes. thank you for sharing.
Very nice !!! i just ordered me a old Deba from Japan…can’t wait to start similar project
Have fun!
One of my favourite videos you've done, top job mate.
Wow, thanks!
Unbelievable! I just clicked on youtube after spending an hour on my Deba and this is recommended. I feels. My knife was used as a garden trowel for years, handle full of crap, tip of the blade snapped and edge saw toothed. It's taken me 4 years to get it looking and working like a Deba again with sand paper and stones. I did not use power tools to avoid heat. Yeah, the steel is really hard, but beautiful. Any hoo, 8000 grit for the win and cool video, thank you.
Thanks, Mark!
FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic job, love how you work around issues.
Thanks, Wesley!
Already picture it and is going to look badass
Beautiful. 100% better than what you get in shops nowadays. Love it.
Thank you!
Nice work. Beautiful outcome.
Thank you very much!
It is supposed to be concave on the back side. It is a single bevel fish knife. It is very important for this type of knife.
HaHa LOVE the part about the “ ifers” so true ... well done sir!
Thank you, sir!
Hermoso video!
Felicitaciones y gracias por hacerlo!
Excelente trabajo!
Beautiful! And I can’t agree with you more. No one has an excuse not to get off the couch and do something!
By the way, I love your sense of humor!
Beautiful knife and now it has a handle that's just as beautiful! Great Job!
Thanks, Greg!
The black and blue layers in the handle looks just amazing. Great work!!!

Thanks a lot, Alex!
City-appartment-craftmanship. Every projects starts with thinking about: „How can I avoid making noise, how can I avoid sawdust, how can I avoid making my wife crazy?“ THEN the work starts. I understand this soooo well! Don't take advices from people with a one-billion-$-tool-shed on the countryside! :-D Very well done!
Thank you for showing the process with the marker!
Glad it was helpful!
what a neat job. Thank you.
Thank you too!
Great job!!!
Perfact work.

Oh my my 😄😄😄
Muito bom. Parabéns por este trabalho.
You Sir, are a Master, at everything you do!!
Thanks a lot!
Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
If you just polished the backside, it's a job well done. In case you completely flattened the concave back, then you took the last bit of life that knife had. The concave backside is crucial for Japanese one sided knives.
Awesome rhyme btw.
It is still concaved yes!
Thanks man!
Great job and great commentary!
Thank you this video, i really enjoyed it!
Thanks!
Keeping the art of using hand tools and not depending on modern tech for things like this is awesome. Never know, one day those modern tools might be all gone, or not work anymore.
As to the restoration, its BEAUTIFUL. Such a great job on that, i loved the look of the handle at the end. Amazing what a little patience and work can achieve. Congratulations on such a nice knife.
Thank you very much!
Excellent restoration. The choice of wood (love the grain) with the blue trim made for gorgeous replacement handle.
Thanks!
Japanese style restoration... good job
Thank you!
I like mixing epoxy in those little bathroom paper cups. In your case you didn't use enough to bother with one, but if you ever mix a lot it helps.
That's a great idea!
Your jokes alone make it worth subscribing. Thank you for the entertainment.
The slow talking and his accent make a bad joke come to life.
Wish the original handle could have been reused. Your lucky to have that my friend.
Thank you
amazing!!!
Thanks!
Wow, this is amazing. I really admire your work ethic and craftsmanship. I’m currently in high school and I just started my own knife restoration project because I’ve been interested in doing something like this for a while. Could you give me some tips on restoring old tools? What types of wood would you recommend using for creating a new handle? Finally, what tools should I use in the process. Thanks so much!
Good work. I enjoyed the humor and you not hiding mistakes. Mistakes can be fixed and you did. Thx
Thanks, Rob!
A beautiful knife resto, not just for your first, but as any resto.👏👏👏👏
Thanks, Steven!

Thanks, Bob!
Great job looks awesome
Thanks a lot!
Great, fun video.
Glad you enjoyed it
great job
Thank you!
A 4 in 1 wood file makes handle shaping a bit easier. One of these days I'm going to make a Japanese style chefs knife full tang Osage orange. I made a bowie with that handle and Love the waxy feel of that wood. I only make hidden tang knives with bolsters front and aft. I peen the tang on the pommel bolster. Living in the Appalachian mountain area we are blessed by many hardwoods. We are mostly poor. I started with no power tools and a home made forge.
Thank you for the video beautiful job and more power to you.
Thank you very much, John!
Take care!
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls
Thanks!
Beautiful restoration, better than could have done
Thanks, Dave!
Modify and adapt. Nicely done, sir. I'd use Starbond EM-2000 Thick, Premium CA - Super Glue.
Man you are an inspiration amazing job
Thanks!
Amazing result sir, congratulations. Work does pay off!
Thanks!
Superb restoration. well done.
Thank you! Cheers!
Amazing. Love the restoration and your jokes..
Thanks!
you the man, great work, greetings from Alabama,USA
Cheers, bud!
Beautiful! !!!
Thanks, Dawn!
The issue with the epoxy is the smooth surface on the blue pieces. You need to rough it up by "scoring" it. Or use a different material that will bond better like blue wood. You can also dye your own wood if you like.
I love your attitude and I love your humor. Awesome video!
Thanks, Cody!
well done.. nice restoration.. ✌️✌️
So glad to see you using electrolysis to clean the metal. Seen 3-4 other videos before now with just a soak, like "What are you even doing?!!" Very nice job!
Thank you!
Amaaaazing
Thank you!
This type of knife typically has a mulberry handle with a horn ferule, like what you removed. It is a fish knife, not a kitchen knife. Mulberry grips good when wet.
Not bad...not bad at all👍👍
Thanks!
Wow never seen this hardwork on other restoration video channels. Congrats brother
Thanks, bro!
Awesome work! I hope to see more videos like this one. It's a great hobby and seems like you found many Japanese friends, that's cool)
Thanks a lot, my friend!

Thank you!
Good effort.
Nice restoration.

Thanks!
A deba knife is supposed to concave on the back for easier sharpening without removing too much material.
For those who did not know
Do that's why they are concave, thanks.
They are a single beveled edge Japanese kitchen knives; there are many. Designed to provide a razor sharp edge for precision cuts i.e. the yanagiba (sashimi blade) and it's many varieties...all designs evolved over hundreds of years to dismantle anything and everything out of the sea. The concave back helps with an absolute straight back surface.
HOWEVER, the Deba is a beast, and can be used as a stud finder with no damage to the geometry of the steel 👍😎
Cool restoration
Rusty Restoration Fun
