      United States Court of Appeals
      FOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA CIRCUIT
      Argued September 14, 2018 Decided November 30, 2018
      No. 18-5176
      "
      United States government. In
      September 2017, based on concerns that the Russian
      government could exploit Kaspersky’s access to federal
      computers for ill, the Acting Secretary of Homeland Security
      directed federal agencies to remove the company’s products
      from government information systems.
      "
      P.S.
      Kaspersky's product has the ability to organize remote access to the target PC using many different transport protocols, this is done with the aim of obfuscation of traffic.
      They also send endless telemetry to their servers and know everything about the target PC that is needed to launch an attack. Kaspersky products also scan the LAN segment, which gives even more scope for building potential attack routes.
      And this can go on for quite a long time, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with all the variety of malicious functionality using the example of Kaspersky Security Center, which I am currently working directly with.
      I think you will everything.

    Best defense against malware for any OS is, of course, installing only from trusted sources. Clicking on a .run from a company situated like Kaspersky fails that test in my opinion. I assume DT only installed this on a disposable VM.

    Kaspersky Lab was founded by Eugene Kaspersky, Natalya Kaspersky, and Alexey De-Monderik. Eugene Kaspersky, a Russian cybersecurity expert, is the most well-known among them and has served as the face of the company. The company, established in 1997, is headquartered in Moscow, Russia, and specializes in antivirus and cybersecurity products.
    Eugene Kaspersky graduated from The Technical Faculty of the KGB Higher School in 1987 with a degree in mathematical engineering and computer technology.
    Kaspersky lives in Moscow and Kaspersky Lab earns billions of dollars and no one is taking away such a profitable business from him. In Russia this is possible only in one case.

    • @protogionlastname6003
      @protogionlastname6003 3 місяці тому

      This was made for a cash grab from Russian state institutions. With Windows going away and more and more institutions moving to Linux, Kaspersky felt the urge to make something for Linux - entirely useless, but paid, so they would continue to milk down institutions like they were doing before.
      It was never meant for personal usage at all.
      There is a bunch of strange people in the comments fantasizing about them making a buck by selling data gathered by spying and such, but it is not how Kaspersky are making the money right now. It's contracts with Russian government to install expensive software on their machines. They force every institution to pay for it on every workstation it has.
      That does not imply in any way that it's not spyware, it's proprietary after all so it can be anything.

      OF COURSE Russia wants to weaponize the few other companies and systems that use Linux. Because most of them are simply not possible to break into without a lot of alarms going off. What people fail to realize is that every company in Belarus and Russia is no different than in China. When ( not if ) the government says that they want X to happen or Y to be done, it doesn't matter if you are the top general in the country, a business owner, or a peasant in the fields. You comply 100% or find yourself "relocated" immediately. So absolutely everything that has their DNA on it is being weaponized or will be depending on how Putin feels at the moment. Don't say we didn't warn you.

      Opening your rear to one out of two major sides by installing this rootkit is nutty. You seem to forget but we see less destructive actions from western glowies in terms of innocent people suffering. But even if we didn't why would you run kaspersky as root. Root... it's a proprietary "toolkit" running as root, doing who knows what at the behest of who knows who. Rootkit.

    • @newbtop
      @newbtop 3 місяці тому

      I think any program like this should operate in root mode to perform tasks such as deleting infected files. I've also tested ESET NOD32 for Linux, and similarly, you need root access even for installation. However, one can use existing online scans, but if you only scan without purging, what is the point?
      The Linux world should be prepared because, as shown in "The PC Security Channel," malware can easily affect Linux systems. Some viruses have been found in repositories for many years, not to mention issues with snaps and flatpaks. If the number of Linux users grows, who knows what might happen?

      As a Russian I've never heard such a thing stated in this way. People don't bother with Kaspersky because:
      1. As any antivirus monitor it slows the machine, which is especially noticeable on older office grade PCs and laptops
      2. It costs a lot of money
      3. Previously it had make weird sounds when detecting a virus, jumpscaring people
