This laptop is built like a tank and is not super light but you can see the quality in the construction. It's fast, responsive and has an excellent backlit keyboard. It won't win any beauty contests but it is a business laptop after all. I own one of these and use a 5310 at work and both are top quality machines.
This is 2023, and I have this Latitude, but the I7 8665U version, I installed the WWAN module, a 1 TB NVME SSD, and 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, and it works excellent nowadays, I design in all autodesk software, Auocad, Inventor, Revit, and so on.
Interesting. I'm looking at i7 8665U 512 GB SSD 16 GB of DDR4 RAM listings (and similar) and worried that it may not be enough for running things like SolidWorks simulations without dedicated graphics. If you're still around, what do you think? How does this computer perform on graphic-heavy tasks in CAD softwares? As a gamer I have no trouble turning my graphics settings all the way down to get a playable experience, but for college the CAD software graphics are what they are, and I want to make sure I have the performance I need.
@@samuelfaville2415 Hi, I have no problems by running CAD software in the 8665u latitude, I still working on it at home, I have installed SolidWorks and it runs excellent, sadly dedicated graphics are not correctly exploited at the time of designing or making simulations, but at the time of creating static renders or videos. In my office, I have an 8 core/16th Xeon workstation with dedicated graphics by Nvidia Quadro 4000, and I don't perceive significant difference in performance at the time of designing in 3D or 2D, but the latitude has better response at the time of switching between open applications. For CAD software, is better having a workstation with the higher bus/memory bandwidth instead of powerful graphics. I recently installed ASPEN PLUS and COMSOL in the latitude 5400, and both run great depending on the configured mesh complexity.
I got a thing for old business computers and I just picked up this today for under $300 on Amazon. Comes with 512 nvme and 16gb sodimm ram so I’ll probably add a second stick because reasons. Same processor you have. 95% of anything I do is on my desktop rig which is quite the powerhouse but I find myself needing a laptop sometimes. I’m thinking this will serve me for years to come.
I just bought the 5411 with an i7... not cheap but beautifully crafted with 10th gen I core series with vPro. Not bad. I love my Dell products. Great review.
I have not been here for years. Was here at the beginnings of the channel but i just ran out of laptop need and interest in my daily life. Found myself looking for a cheap laptop on eBay and only one place to come at look at reviews even after all these years. Many thanks ol' chap.
To add to this, if I'm not mistaken, all 3 USB A ports are 3.1 gen 2, or 10gps theorical bandwidth instead of 5! In my experience, this means transferring several gigs of files within mere seconds with a proper external NVME. So you could use the Thunerbolt to expand or have an external GPU to transform it into a gaming laptop (hell yeah!!!) while transferring data at unreal speeds on multiple drives. This is the ultimate sleeper laptop!
I use this everyday for approximately 8 to 10 hrs just coding in an multitasking manner if anyone knows that terms as a software developer, if you don't it basically means you could have 10 different Microsoft VS Code open alongside SQL Server and an Android Studio IDE and some usual apps running in the background too! These laptops are way beyond capable and love mine. Thanks for the video :)
@@lilith6162 Sorry for the late reply! Yes still going strong. The only thing I had to do was to upgrade the memory RAM to 32GB that costed me about £60-70 and apps are running much more smoother! The other thing I noticed is the fan noise that seems a little loud compared to other newer laptops, and I think that's totally normal if you are listening to music or something as you wouldn't hear it then! Hope it helped :)
my god imagine running linux on this thing with those cpu benchmarks. These things or going for just a couple hundred dollars used and they are insanely fast
i got a chromebook one and im getting the joy of upgrading and salvaging a $70 ebay i7 donor board, even upgrading a bunch of silly stuff like screen and battery ill have an insane amount of laptop for $100-200
Really a No Nonsense laptop with Decent Specs, Good Thermals, Great Battery and Well priced laptop. Off course great review as always and bloopers in the end are welcome edition made me laugh. Best of luck for 2020 excited to watch much more from you this year. Thank you Andrew.
Interesting. I'm looking at i7 8665U 512 GB SSD 16 GB of DDR4 RAM listings (and similar) on amazon, etc and worried that it may not be enough for running things like SolidWorks simulations without dedicated graphics. If you're still around, what do you think? How does this computer perform with these slightly higher specs than your current review n higher graphics? As a gamer I have no trouble turning my graphics settings all the way down to get a playable experience, but for college the CAD software graphics are what they are, and I want to make sure I have the performance I need.
Costs 263 dollars in Mexico. Carbon fiber on laptops is so awesome by the way. More elastic than aluminum bodies that Macbooks got and still metallic looking.
I agree with you about all the features but the design ..... Dell could made something better!!! When you go at the client or when the client comes in your office you would like to have on the desk a performing laptop as well but also a nice designed laptop too.... (Sorry for my English I am Italian and I follow your reviews!) thanks and good job
Oh my word, they still sell these things with an i3 and 4Gb of memory, a spindle disk? What is this 2012? I would just walk away from my desk and tell them to give me a laptop I can do work on, not something that I have to wait on forever to load up a local program. Only at 1200 USD, it is starting to look a little better, but still only 8Gb so it is only using the single lane of memory... What in the world does a class 35 solid state drive mean? Oh it is less read and write than a class 30 drive, jeezus, 800k read speeds? That is barely over SATA....
i got gifted this laptop today and i was wondering if it can handle any coding or programming for my university courses. Im on a budget so if i dont have to buy another one thatd be great. I havent seen anyone mention if this laptop would be suitable for CS students if not what would you recommend. (if u suggest a different one my priority is coding and programming but i would also like to be able to game) pls help. thank you
Storage is a shocking limited to 512 GB at the Amazon website. Apple promoting a maximum upgrade to 8TB on their MacBooks yet Dell boasts a max of just 1/2 a TB?
I liked the following: 1. Footage was sharp 2. Editing was to the point and nothing seemed extra (except for one thing) 3. Titles were not flashy and seemed professional 4. Narration was crisp and clear. I feel what could definitely be improved are: 1. You did not test the thermals properly when the system was under load, which makes me and other viewers be led to believe that thermals will always be good even under load. But that's not true. I have colleagues at work who are facing heating as well as throttling issues when compiling code. So I find it highly irregular that you didn't show the thermal results of the system under load. 2. The segment after the main video ended was unnecessary and felt like you were selling a product. The portions just before it were good. Wishing you well nonetheless.

The battery is awesome on the business laptop. Solid offering from Dell. Let me know what you think.
@Dominic Ramos do you get an answer?
Do you think that its a good upgrade from Acer Aspire 3 with Ryzen 7 3700u and Radeon Vega RX 10 ?

I have not reviewed it unfortunately. The 5400 is very good.

How does this laptop compare to the 2017 MacBook Air i5? Also how does it compare to the Medion Erazer P6679? I didn’t know this had optional LTE.

Cool camera, not the best of the world, but it has some nice colors and a nice resolution, for a good video conference.
I got it for 250 bucks used, i5 8th gen with a 512 ssd. Worth the money?

what does the HDD slot there ? I mean ... a HDD doesn´t fit there.

79%? That's a fairly low rating, compared to the majority of laptops you have been reviewing. I'm looking forward to some of your CES videos. Always interested in the latest new toy, even though I'm not in the market!
Pretty similar to HP elitebook 840 G1 in design.
