I think the Celts called these beings the "Tuatha Dé Danann."
Maybe it's just a coincidence, but even their names sound slightly similar.
In the tamil language of india 'thaatha' means grandfather. In mayan it means respected elder. Very interesting similarity
In Filipino folklore, we also have Aghoy (helps you find lost things)
, Tahamaling (red complexioned),Mangmangkit (cut trees at your own peril) they are also called Duendes, adapted from the Spanish and become the general term.
Awesome ! What an info. Thanks. We too in India have "Ara-kashu-Amman" which very few know about except in South India. It translates as "Half Coin Mother Goddess" , a half coin literally means half of the single unit of currency from whichever country you belong to. If it's U.S : 50¢ ; EU : 50 Cents ; India : 50 paise ; U.A.E : 50 Fils etc.
By keeping a 50% of a unit currency and praying to Arakash Amman , one is said to get back lost or stolen items. The coin is them given for charity or temple trust for the disabled, children/people with illness etc. In that way there is huge devotion for the Goddess. Love from India.
What's unique about the Belize mythology along with the sightings is that it's very similar to mythology on Gnomes from other cultures. Mythology teaches that Gnomes are magical creatures with magical powers and very similar to this creature the Belize speak of, very fascinating!!!!

I was thinking about that too. Europe also has myths and legends about creatures such as elves, fairies and gnomes. So the fact that they say that this comes from the Mayans and wasn't something that the colonialist Spaniards brought makes it even more fascinating. How did two very distinctly different cultures a world apart from each other come up with very similar creatures? It makes it seem that much more credible to me.
Braiding the manes of horses is such a fascinatingly specific detail, also present in the lore of the tomte/nisse (Scandinavian), & of the little people (many native North American tribes), & if I remember correctly, also certain types of fair folk (Irish).
The tata duende reminds me of the fey folk of the British Isles. Especially the braiding of horses' manes.

My Grandfather in Norway believed in tomte (gnome-like tcreatures) so much he had little rock piles in his yard to keep them busy, one morning i woke up and noticed the piles were shifted, it was probably him or a neighbor, was an awesome experience for an 8 year old though.

There is no telling what exists in those forests; forests across the world have hidden animals that are likely horrifying.
I want to move to Belize. I think I would get along well with Tata Duende. As a native Floridian, I grew up in the forests, swamps and in the water. Now there's too many people from out of state, and too many swamps are now shopping malls, Florida is becoming one big city. City life makes me sick 🤮. I've been a fan of bigfoot since I was a child, and I've gotten an interest in these gnome-like creatures in the last few years. I wish the Belize people could learn from Florida's native citizens, and realize how horrible this state has become due to developers and greedy politicians. Let the tourists in, and try to keep them in certain areas, they will bring in money. But don't overdevelop, because you will wind up regretting it.

I think this earth is too old for us to know everything about it.
I believe there are spirits or an energy that connects us all.
Its foolish for us to think everything is scientific is our definition.
It might be explainable by logic but just a different type of logic.
The unexplained is a different type of science that we just don't understand yet.

There was something very similar that used to chase me down the stairs when I was little. It felt like it's name was hognog, that's what I used to call it.
Its similar a brazilian indian legend, called Curupira. He had a red hair and turnback feet. He is the protector of jungle animals and nature.
Duende is a goblin, tata is a father figure.
Same here, these little ppl have a giant matriarch, very beautiful too! Our elders said they would braid horses hairs if they liked them, they would also and have broken horses backs too, if they do not like you.. or If you go to areas they are protecting, we have lots here, very fast, very powerful.
After a little digging, Belize is not the ONLY country believing in Tata Duenda... The Aztec also knew of them. I am curious if the Olmec knew of them, and I haven't found anything as to whether or not the Inca knew of them, though would be interesting to know. It's not just a Belizian belief... And I have heard a Mexican Family in America discussing it, because the "Little People of the Forest", a Native American belief, in America were brought up in conversation.

I knew a guy in Belize who claimed he had seen tata duende while walking through the woods. His feet pointed backward.

Duende legend is not limited to Belize.
Tata Duende is like the Alux (in the Yucatan) and the Chaneque (in the Nahua-speaking parts of Mexico). The backward-facing feet is similar to the Sisimite, a bigfoot-type creature in tropical Mexico and Central America. I talk about these creatures on my channel.
Between the Yucatec Maya of Belize and Mexico we have the Alux and the Tata Duende . The Yucatec Maya of Belize know the Tata Duende as Nukux Tat pronounce as "Nukush Tat". Between the Mayas of the peninsula they know them as Tata Balam or Balames . They are seen as guardians of the forest and animals . In my communities the Tata Duende or how we call it Nukux tat are given offerings to ask permission to enter the jungle . They protect us when we go to the jungle also.
Shiver should come visit me because my garden is invaded by these gnomes.

Hmmm...strange. This "Tata Duende" shares some resemblance to the Celtic beings called the "Tuatha Dé Danann." Even their names sound slightly similar.
The De Danann were supposedly the original inhabitants of Ireland & their descendants became the faire folk/fairies in Celtic mythology.
I am sure the ancient records were not destroyed. European colonialists often told that lie while quietly shipping the records back to europe, so people wont come looking for them. They did this world wide.

I live in Central America and I had a thing with a "Duende".... It stole my friends flute. He looked everywhere for it. He said he had seen a duende jumping around his firewood the day before . I had heard they like candy. Its a long story. Eventually I sacrificed a piece of my favorite candy, placed it under the deck, and he gave back the flute, Took a long time. He messed with us. Grandmas say they steal tThings. And so do the Phillipinos!

Duwende is also the Filipino term for Dwarves/Gnomes. Goes to show the extent of the Mexican influences in the Philippines and vice versa because of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon trade during the Spanish Colonial Era. Tiangge , Palengke, Nanay and Tatay are just some other Mexican Native American words I know that ended up in the Filipino vocabulary.

The Tata Duende actually seems synonymous with what they call "Odiyan" in India. A short black magician who can shift forms.

In Brazil there is a creature called Curupira, who also have inverted feet and live in the forest. Very similar role. It's probably iberian influence mixed with native legends in both cases.

I enjoyed the documentary except for the narrator who was like trying to make the Tata Duende look like "Evil Monster" . I like you guys got Doña Garcia to give her view on the Tata Duende and show the ritual . Between the Yucatec Maya communities the Tata Duende is known as Nukux Tat and are guardians spirits of the forest ,animals and humans. Some Yucatec Maya of Northern Belize and Cayo still give prayers for the Tata Duende (Nukux Tat) .
This is more of a Belize tourism/history documentary more than it is anything else.
Interesting that all but one referred the Tata Duende as "He". And that one refers to the Tata Duende" as "They".
The tat duvende is the spirit if the mushroom. Its not wearing a hat. It is the top cap of a mushroom.
Its worshipped by all south americans . It is the spirit of the forest and gives you life

The Maya people had a writing system and even after the conquest they continue writing books . It's common among the Yucatec Maya elders writing things and leaving it for the new generation to learn them if for encase no one did when they were alive . I'm sure it most have other Influences also the whole world have taken influence from other cultures.
I’m a very open minded person when it comes to certain phenomena. I 100% believe there’s Sasquatch living, reproducing, I believe there’s other life forms out there (ufo), but I kind of draw the line at certain things like this, but who knows maybe it is a spiritual type of being.

"Can't prove saints are real?" LOL! I can not speak for the Catholic Church as I am Christian Baptist. The Bible speaks of demonic interdimensional spirits, the Bible also speaks of those who paid homage to these spirits (they are not of the one true God) yet unfortunately people are allowing themselves and their children to praise these spirits.
