Miss Nancy use zucchini in a spiral cutter. Steam them or lightly saute them, makes excellent spaghetti noodles. Great for heart or diabetic folks God Bless
My daughter makes zucchini and yellow squash noodles also with a spiral cutter. She makes her spaghetti, butter noodles, and she also makes a baked version of her lasagna with sliced eggplant or sliced squash. Lightly salute or lightly steamed.
i love the way you guys love each other , the way you stand together and hold hands , that simple thing is the glue that makes life better and all else beyond it is blessed
Long time viewer, 10 years. Thanks for sharing your difficulties as well as your successes. You and Nancy are phenomenal gardeners, so I follow closely how you do things. Wishing you all the best!
Hollis you will be in my prayers, I hope the good Lord lays his healing hands upon you like only he can. With you as well Nancy, I hope you both stay blessed, healthy and happy! And of course as always, loved the video!!
I grow in North Florida and have had the same issue with pickle worms. Last year wasn’t as bad as other years but I have learned to keep the BT or Neem oil close by once the plants start producing fruit. You got to stay ahead of the worms and spray weekly and after it rains because the rain will wash off the sprays. Remove any damaged fruit as early as possible and look for those worms and remove them manually if possible. It’s all part of gardening in the South!!! God bless.
I have a question? Did the net help with this problem I want to grow spaghetti squash I love it but I don't want to deal with the worms. I live in central Florida
@@jeanettejarvis9669 I have never used the net but find the key is to be in your garden everyday inspecting for issues so you can take care of problems before they get out of hand (easier said than done right?! 🤣). I have only used netting before once for brassicas in the fall/winter, they worked great against cabbage worms.
well!!! It happened here in Maine!! The Squash Vine Borer Moths teamed up with the local Pickle Worms & started a full-on asssault on my peacefull Squash Village. NOW they have air support AND boots on the ground, excuse me, appendages on the ground. I had to evacuate the locals and turn the patch into bioChar. THEN rake up and sift the dirt to look for the SVB pupae. Which, as it turns out, I've been seeing them in their pupea form all my life, I ALWAYS wondered what those things turn into. I suggest you google what the pupea stage looks like, because chances are you've seen them before
Hello. Just wanted to say thank you for being transparent by showing the successes as well as the failures. I find you both to be reliable, dependable and trustworthy instructional leaders. Be Blessed.
Are they only in the south? Last year some type of worm took out all my spaghetti squash. the ones that looked good when I let them cure and brought them in would start to rot at the end and solost them all. So sad lots of work and tease that they looked good at first. I understand about the pain. arthritis is through my whole body. I pray daily for Gods healings and healing for both you and Nancy. God's blessing to you and yours
I’ve never heard of the dreaded dastardly pickle worm but I’m new to this gardening stuff. The one thing I try to do without fail is as soon as I put a plant in any soil, I water the new plant then I just wet the surface of the soil with Summit Mosquito Bits solution that I soak with about 3Tbs in 32oz jar with filtered water (not tap or anything with chloramines etc) for 1-4hrs then I shake and strain the bits out. Then add about 1/4c to each 1gal of filtered water in a shower head watering can. (I use a Boogie Blue Plus water filter for my plants) SMB is also a BT. Completely organic and safe for people, wildlife and fish. It kills gnats and mosquito larvae in case it’s in any soil or compost. I do that every 5-7 days for 2-3 weeks then every 2 weeks. Most time they’re gone by the second watering but want to ensure they’re gone. I’m wondering if you got them from your compost. Hey, have you thought of using predator mites? I’ve seen YT videos using a drone to spread them around or add pouches hanging on your plants. Just a thought. God Bless you both.
Hi! Just to add another option for you. We love Zoodles - spiral cut zucchini. We use it as a spaghetti substitute with my sauce and also I have make "noodles" but cutting the zucchini into thin planks and making lasagna. A great substitute and friends of our that were skeptical now ask for these alternative meals. Have a super day. We are here with you on your new journey and I am certain will all learn along the way. Oh I just came across a tool that may make your trellising a little easier and not sure if you have ever used it. It is called a Tapener. I have seen it on Amazon and a variety of other garden supply sites. Just though that I would mention it to you seeing that you seem to trellis a lot of veggies and it could be a time saver.
I'm in central NC and pickleworms are the very bane of my existence. Last year, they blessedly left my cukes alone, but year before last, I barely got any. I'm so sorry you lost your whole harvest, but you definitely gave it a good try!
They have those konyyaku (konjac) based shirataki noodles that have low to no carbs that people on keto diets eat. Maybe try that. Or spiral cut zucchini noodles...zoodles.
If you use a crop cover threw the season of the moth that creates the worm and take of the cover after the season of said moth that has worked very well for my wife and I. We live in Missouri Zone 6B and we use crop covers for a lot of our garden and we have never grown such wonderful crops. Thanks for all of your content that you guys create you are a inspiration to many that are seeking this information. God Bless you all
I never seen a pickle worm B4 thank you for sharing, also it's been 40 or 50 years since I've seen a tomato worm. If you come across one could you show that also. Sending virtual Granny hug's and prayers to everyone ☺️💕
Oh gosh watching this from seed, to seedlings, to all the work in trellis garden prep, and tieing up trellis to see this happen breaks my heart. I have never heard of pickle worm, watching from frozen Reno Nevada. I pray it all recovers! Love you Nancy and Hollis! Great learning curve!
I was told that if you put bat houses up around the garden property they will take care of the pests in the garden and fertilize it for you too😇 Thank you both for all you share I'm starting some containers this week if the weather will only cooperate!😱❄️ Blessings and prayers for your health 🙏
Brother, try low carb or keto with intermittent fasting. Sarah at Living Traditions has some videos sharing her keto recipes... stuffed bell peppers, for example. Yum!! You can overcome this diagnosis and even come out healthier on the other side. 😉 Also, look up Dr Berg's videos about Berberine ...does everything metformin does without side effects. Berberine is also anti-cancer. Cinnamon is good as well...
Thank you Hollis and Nancy❣️ i’m in California and I am growing my garden in buckets..this is my second year. I really appreciated your video on growing plants in buckets, as I live in an apartment with a very small backyard, and not able to grow directly in the dirt... I am more able to reach and take care of them in the buckets, and have not had much problem with pests. I planted almost all my plants from seeds of vegetables that I have eaten. They’ve all done pretty well. When I planted the spaghetti squash, I didn’t know what the seed was, so I had to wait until it came up to try to figure out which vegetable it would be. This video has helped me very much to try to keep and save my squash plants. Lord bless you and keep you and your families.❤️
So my husband is diabetic and we use the spaghetti squash but in the summertime I also use zucchini and make noodles out of it and lasagna sheets out of it. My kitchen aid mixer has attachments that cuts the sheets and noodles for me. Takes just a few minutes and it’s done. You can use several vegetables to substitute for noodles you can spiral cut or sheet cut.
hello MR HOLLIS and MS Nancy i am somewhat a gardener myself nothing big i only plant for home use i am in nyc we don't have too much hot weather here i do enjoy your shows sir and i do enjoy that little prayer you and MS Nancy says you guys keep doing what you are doing very good work
hi hollis & nancy 🤗 your videos are the best. been watching for years and subscribed last year. im in socal/zone10. ive experienced pests for the first time as well - aphids this winter and fig beetles last summer. i never had them before. i really think its the crazy changes in the weather. ive never sprayed anything on my garden, but ill try bt & baking soda. tfs
Thanks for sharing your experience Mr.Hollis and Miss Nancy 🙏😇🙏 I am sorry about the pickle worms 🐛 problem! I had them last year on my tomatoes 🍅 too but my neighbor has lots of birds from her backyard and they help me solve the problem. I love your spirit of not giving up 👍😍 let’s try again this year 😅 May God bless you both with good health so we can enjoy more videos and learn more form you 🙏😇🙏 Have a blessed day❤
We live in Miami Zone 10 and this year the weather has been so crazy that we’ve had several pests already. Whiteflies, powdery mildew, hornworms… it never ends. Thanks for the baking soda tip. We’ll try it. 😅 ❤
Back in the sixties my grandfather used to put stockings ( before pantyhose) around his Papaya plants to keep the bugs out. I grew up in Hialeah Florida.
Well, that doesn't work for pickle worms. The worms lay their eggs on the actual flowers and the fruit and the stem near the fruit. It's impossible in the South.
Thank you, Hollis and Nancy, for your informative videos! I live in Southern California on a very small plot of land. I am trying to grow some food for my husband and I. It’s a challenge but we need to have a plan in these uncertain times. I watch all of your videos and appreciate your thorough approach. God bless you both!
I just picked the first zucchini off the plant and it was turning yellow. I read it was possibly due to calcium deficiency. This is my first year gardening, so it's a real learning process. I see how you're using a generous amount of bone meal and I've seen you use a lot of Lime. I have both, but apparently didn't use near enough.. Next Time...😊
I have so much respect for you Hollis and Nancy. I am impressed by the way you reveal your successes and your failures with your gardening. And how you track the progress of the plants from start to finish. I have learned so much since I started watching your channel and now I have learned to not be discouraged when I don't get the results I was expecting from my garden.
Sorry to hear about the losing battle against the famous warrior of the Pickle Worm. I used to have issues with the other well known garden worm "The tomato Horn Worm", but one year I grew my tomato plants near our backyard bird feeder, and I didn't see the first worm that year. I'm just curious if that might help in this situation. Might be worth trying. Also, my wife suggested planting marigolds or herbs such as Basil or oregano close by to help mask the scent of the spaghetti squash blooms.
This was so relatable, I grow a garden in south Florida and this spring was super hot and my cucumbers got destroyed by pickle worms and I also ended up ripping it all out and I planted okra in its place. Thank you for the great videos and it’s nice to see some of the realities of gardening.
I'm so sorry you didn't get your spaghetti but you can make spaghetti noodles out of sakini but I have them in the store too they're vegetable noodles Thank you very educational thank you so much
Love spaghetti squash more than pasta almost. Dad is diabetic so mom bought a spiralizer to make pasta from zucchini in the summer when the winter squash is gone so he can still enjoy some of his favorite dishes. Like it for when it's hot and you don't want to eat so heavy.
Also found out 3weeks ago I too am diabetic. I sure am going to miss the goodies but we can do it😁👍. Nancy is a true blessing God bless you and keep you both healthy and happy..btw I'm sick of the bugs in Tennessee I bought insect netting for this year
I’m a diabetic…. I also use a spiral cutter on my kitchen aid mixer. I cut zucchini into spirals. Also make a zucchini and spinach lasagna. It’s delicious!!
It's encouraging to see that even seasoned gardeners have failures too. We don't have the pickle worm here in Central Texas but we do have the dreaded Squash Vine Borer. Growing squash of any kind is near impossible. I keep trying though!
I would suggest keeping them covered the whole time to keep the moth from getting to it. That's what I do with my cabbage and cole crops. I don't like bugs. God bless you from Idaho!
My hubby & I picked up 6 bags of Black Kow manure today. Getting our garden beds ready here in PA. My seeds are sprouting inside. Growing more this year then we ever have!
I had a really good cucumber plants a few years back and all of a sudden I saw all my cukes with pickle worms, I was so dissapointed. They are gross. Before starting this year I dug in soil and picked them all out. I'll try your spray. Love your gardens, Blessings.
Hollis, I was surprised you didnt put in any peatmoss being that virgin soil to retain some moisture when watering. Getting ready to start our spring garden now so i might give this a try. Happy Gardening
Pickleworms are the worst in my area. I gave up on even trying to grow canteloupe. Cucumbers are also a challenge, I’ll get some harvested before I throw in the towel. Thank you for sharing your trials as well as your successes.
We got that Honda cultivator a year or so ago after watching you use yours. This is a nice little machine, and one of the few pieces of garden machinery I can start and use on my own. Recommend!
I have used spaghetti squash, the noodlesike angle hair pasta in size & texture. I take a large zucchini & cut thin lengthwise. They make lasagna noodles! I also will take yellow crook or straight neck or smaller zucks & chunk them up & use in casseroles like u would use like elbow macaroni or other pasta. Then... away from main dish, larger zuck.cut rings & quarter them... the look like apple slices, use all ur apple spice pie and cinnamon & put in ur pastry... MOCK APPLE PIE. I made zucchini jelly & zucchini pickles. I love zucchini
Do you think if you had encased each spaghetti squash in one of those pantyhose-like netting thing you mentioned that it might have helped prevent the pickle worm from getting into the fruit?
😢😢😢 ugh I wish it would of worked I want to grow them. But I don't need those headaches. I might do it with the mesh. But I will definitely think about it. Love you guys always ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing your hard work even if it didn't pan out this go around. Your explanation on how to eradicate and then letting us know that even all those steps didn't work is still helpful for the rest of us. Sure appreciate your tips & thoroughly enjoy you, Miss Nancy, and especially sweet Bing Bing. And nice shot of the eagle!
I’m in coastal Alabama and have had problems with pickle worms. Now I plant as soon as possible and try to get ahead of the moth that lays their eggs. Good luck!
So sorry things have been rough. Asking for healing and better results for rest garden this year. Love your show especially because you show to end season and on Till on table
Hi guys, thanks for posting - hands down my favorite farming site. Sorry to hear about your medical issues but have no doubt Nancy will take care of it. Was hoping if you get a chance to do a video on plants that should and shouldn’t get full sun. I know it seems trivial but I’ve had issues with some plants.
Thanks for sharing Romans 8:28. Love seeing Bing Bing reminded me of our little Roxy -Jack Russell we lost last year 14 years old, best pet ever! Borders always get my squash in KY.
The good and bad… Its good to watch this video. I am new to gardening. I got a some cucumber, before aphids took over. It was discouraging. I watch tons of gardening videos. I’ll take the Good and bad. I’ll stick to it.
Sorry to hear you have diabetes Hollis. I was diagnosed with it about 8 years ago, and constantly struggle with my A1C being too high. I don't eat a lot of sugar but and not good at watching the foods that convert to sugar, such as bread, pasta, etc.... Just had a double bypass 2 months ago also. Watch it now Hollis. At our age, bad health really creeps up on us quickly, seemingly out of nowhere. I really thought I was all fine, only to quickly find out I'm not. God bless and keep you and Nancy.
07/06/24 First-time growing winter squash ( spaghetti squash) only got two squash of one plant because of a spine bor, powder mildew, and (after watching your video i know what these worms are) pickleworms. I'm going to try to grow winter squash again next spring. I have learned a lot from you. Thank you for all the wonderful information about gardening.
Using spaghetti squash in place of pasta is some good eating, that's why I'm growing it this year, I'm transplanting my seedlings from seed pellets I started indoors, weather has been wild & wicked out here in Cali. Spaghetti squash is rather large, at least the ones I've always purchased from the market. I guess I will see as I watch your video. Thank you in advance for the information, I'm clueless with this, yours is the first video I'm watching about growing this veggie.
I'm sure glad that you are taking your diabetes seriously, and taking steps to stay healthy. I'm diabetic also. Yeah, pasta, darn it. I love spaghetti too. Haven't tried spaghetti squash replacement yet. Rice, bread, and pizza are bad for us too, among other things. The delicious things in life!
Also Dr. Ken Berry in TN has great information on UA-cam for reversing diabetes. I don't have diabetes but have lived the Ketogenic lifestyle since 2017 and have maintained my 35lbs weight loss
I had them last season on my cucumbers...killed most of my crop. But I used what you are using and it did save a few cucumber 🥒 but I discovered them a little late but lesson learned...lol
Enjoy watching your channel I'm sad this one was a failure but thankful you post the failures as well, that is how we all learn and its always better to know about something that happened to someone else so we can be aware of it. I live in Idaho do not believe that we have them here, but if we do, I'm sure I will find out this year. My nemesis is the squash bugs!
Hollis...The cotton pickin worms...and squirrels! Yep, they get way more than we do. But, this year, I am not spraying and fighting! Yes, I did the insect netting and it did work. However it sure made it a pain to try and care for the plants. So, this year....tulle! I got a bolt of tulle and will be making a pile of squares to tie around each section of the fruit...Not the plant, just the fruit! it might seem like a pain, and probably will be. But, if we get fruit....IT's worth it. Oh, and I have a pile of old cotton t-shirts...I cut those in strips..the best ties..THE-BEST!
Hi guys! Last year, squash bugs decimated my squash and zucchini, so I had the same disappointment, too. I love watching you work the sandy soil in your area and am envious of your being able to cultivate with the small tiller you use. I live in MO, and my garden grows rocks and weeds with equal proficiency, so I have to use a large, rear-tine tiller. Sorry to hear about the diabetes, Hollis. Sounds like you and Nancy are going to stay on top of it, though! Best wishes and God Bless.
We live in Central Florida. You have to spray good every day. If it rains you have to spray again. That's what they do in Zellwood growing corn. We have to spray too. Seminole pumpkins have very little pickle worm problems if any. Love your videos. Thanks
That's exactly how I feel about the dreaded "Cucurbita Moth". This moth lays tiny brown eggs in singletons all over my squash, cucumbers, melons....all vines. The tiny disc shaped eggs hatch out to become the dreaded squash vine borer grub (a fat white grub with a brown head). This critter is my arch enemy. I have only had a few squash by covering and hand pollinating every morning before I head to work over the years. So, the last two years I'd truly given up, and let it all go. The cucurbita moth in case anyone isn't so familiar, is a daytime flying moth usually humming around my garden around 1100am. It looks like a red and black, or orange and black moth resembling a wasp. We have two generations here in Central Oklahoma each year: May, and August. Ive studied this critter for a decade and I've tried all methods, and I mean all methods. *my best advice for prevention in your area is to keep all types of predatory birds...and don't bring in compost from other gardens. This critter is found east of the Rocky Mountains. I wish everyone the best of luck with all things, and happy gardening!!!! ❤
Miss Nancy use zucchini in a spiral cutter. Steam them or lightly saute them, makes excellent spaghetti noodles. Great for heart or diabetic folks God Bless
Wonderful thank you for the tips and sharing with our homestead family
Ma ke the zuchinni noodles, dry and store
Yes my friend with diabetes does this and loves it! ❤
My daughter makes zucchini and yellow squash noodles also with a spiral cutter. She makes her spaghetti, butter noodles, and she also makes a baked version of her lasagna with sliced eggplant or sliced squash. Lightly salute or lightly steamed.
You sure can have pasta. But 100 percent semolina pasta from Italy. Don't let idiots steal your joy. LOL. It's even gluten free.
i love the way you guys love each other , the way you stand together and hold hands , that simple thing is the glue that makes life better and all else beyond it is blessed

Hello. Just wanted to say thank you for being transparent by showing the successes as well as the failures. I find you both to be reliable, dependable and trustworthy instructional leaders. Be Blessed.

I'm so sorry you didn't get your spaghetti but you can make spaghetti noodles out of sakini but I have them in the store too they're vegetable noodles Thank you very educational thank you so much
Thanks for the tip
Thanks for the info!
Hollis,
I was surprised you didnt put in any peatmoss being that virgin soil to retain some moisture when watering.
Getting ready to start our spring garden now so i might give this a try.
Happy Gardening
Just love y’all to pieces & enjoy all your video!
Thanks so much
Pickleworms are the worst in my area.
Recommend!
👍
@@kingscairnAnd apples, but it is very labor intensive if you have very many.
Thanks for sharing!
You all are such hard workers. I love all your shirts,Nancy.
I’m in coastal Alabama and have had problems with pickle worms. Now I plant as soon as possible and try to get ahead of the moth that lays their eggs. Good luck!
Good job bless!!!!!!!
I sure do love your vedios!, I hope you start feeling better soon!! God Bless!!
I live just a bit farther south. Never had pickle worms but have unbelievable trouble with vine borrers.
Love spaghetti squash thank you for this video
You are so welcome!
It work very well, love you all, what a beautiful couple you are
So sorry things have been rough. Asking for healing and better results for rest garden this year. Love your show especially because you show to end season and on Till on table
I’m so sorry, but thank you on the honesty. Love you guys, and prayers for you both.
Drink plenty of water and really watch what your eating and you will control the sugar fluctuations.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Had a hard time last year with pickle worms and vine borer worms…fought a losing battle! Got all my zucchini and cucumbers…I’m in central Mississippi…
The good and bad… Its good to watch this video. I am new to gardening. I got a some cucumber, before aphids took over. It was discouraging. I watch tons of gardening videos. I’ll take the Good and bad. I’ll stick to it.
I always learn something from you and Miss Nancy
Love how do you use the cattle wire and the 4 x 4 posts thank you so much
Afternoon y’all
Howdy 👍
Sorry to hear you have diabetes Hollis.
I was diagnosed with it about 8 years ago, and constantly struggle with my A1C being too high. I don't eat a lot of sugar but and not good at watching the foods that convert to sugar, such as bread, pasta, etc....
Just had a double bypass 2 months ago also.
Watch it now Hollis.
At our age, bad health really creeps up on us quickly, seemingly out of nowhere.
I really thought I was all fine, only to quickly find out I'm not.
God bless and keep you and Nancy.
Thank you God bless you. Maranatha! How about letting the chickens roam around the squash? What about a paper bag around the vege?
Problem is we are too old to catch them 😂😂
Thank you for the info !!
Good Job! 😊
Another great video, Thank you!
Hollis & Nancy, Dr. Berg in Virginia has alot of good info on reversing diabetes naturally. It's a big deal. I've lost many relatives to it.
He has a UA-cam channel with his name.
Also Dr. Ken Berry in TN has great information on UA-cam for reversing diabetes. I don't have diabetes but have lived the Ketogenic lifestyle since 2017 and have maintained my 35lbs weight loss
I'm so sorry about your squash. I learned a lot from your experience. Keep up the good work!
Would covering the fruits when they are small work?
Zucchini noodles are good too 😋 👌
Yes they are!
Thanks
Yea! I’m diabetic and that’s what I do! I love it
That's exactly how I feel about the dreaded "Cucurbita Moth". ❤
That is a tough one Hollis and Nancy y'all worked hard but the netting will be the best way to keep them Moths out Good luck on the next round
Yep, pickle worms here in SC!
The pickle worm's got my cucumbers last year
I definitely hear you on the reach but you guys will definitely get there . 🙏
