    I jumped into MMG in 2012 on Steve's recommendation and now own 1.7i as of Dec 18. These speakers have taught me so much about audio and continue to give me breathtaking experiences that far exceed their price tag. I don't need to talk people into magnepans, they speak for themselves. A good friend of mine is waiting for his LRS now :D

      How large is your room. A salesman in my area wanted to move me up one notch over the 1.7i because of room size. I have a hard time believing it would be worth it for me.

    I was looking for new speakers in 1978 to replace my stacked Advents, and spent months traveling to high end dealers in Wisconsin and Illinois, with an LP of Joan Baez singing "Diamonds and Rust" as my demo material. In September of 1978, I walked into Audio Emporium in Milwaukee, and heard Magnepans for the first time. It was a pair of Tympani 1d's, and the sound blew me away. I had never heard recorded music reproduced so realistically before. I bought a pair of Tympani's and that began my 40 plus year relationship with Magnepan speakers, as well as that same dealer in Milwaukee. I've owned many different pairs over the years, and currently own 1.7's, 1.6's, a CC3 center channel and a pair of MMG's. The 1.7's, CC3 and MMG's are used in an all Magnepan surround system that I use just for music..and what it does for my enjoyment of music is glorious. I had the opportunity to meet Wendell Diller last year when he brought a pair of their 30.7's to demo at Audio Emporium, and what a treat that evening was. When I think back to all of the high end speakers I listened to back in 78, before choosing Magnepan, I realize that almost all of those other manufacturers who's speakers I auditioned, are gone today. It's quite an achievement for any business to survive for 50 years, much less continuing to thrive after all that time. Magnepan is obviously doing something right. Congratulations on 50 years of exceptional service to the audiophile community.

    I did a little research on magnepan speakers yesterday after Cynthia's video. I was really surprised by the price, especially considering what goes into building them.
    I recently purchased my first pair of speakers with ribbon tweeters and was impressed by their detail. To get that kind of detail full range must sound quite incredible.

    Wow! I had no Idea! Congratulations with deep love and admiration to Magnepan for reaching their Gold Milestone!
    I have been a Magnepan owner for almost 20 years when I acquired a pair of MG-IIc's from one of my direct supervisors. To this very hour, they continue to astonish me. They are sounding exceptionally great today with lots of low end bass response when powered from my vintage NEC AVR-1010 100/150 W 8/4 ohm receiver. Being I'm singularly most experienced with my MG-IIc's, and have rarely experienced my Aunt's 3.7i's (which I don't think sound as good with her Rotel RA-810A), I've started to wonder if the newer models of Maggies sound even better than my MG-IIc's! I've started to wonder where the MG-IIc's stand among the forest of Magnepan products, and gain a little history lesson about the MG-IIc's.
    Chuckle- But my favorite thing about Magnepans is their inherent ability to demonstrate uncompassionately just how badly mixed or flawed some albums are... Especially when thoes albums sound great through any other system...
    Thank you Steve. I'm glad I stumbled across your video. Even if it was just over a year later...

I've since listened to many different models and owned MMGs and 1.6QRs. All wonderful. The new LRS and .7 look especially attractive. I have visited the factory several times, and also the nearly nearby Audio Research Corp. factory. We sent pretty much the following to Magnepan a year and a half ago.....
    March 27, 1982, my wife and I purchased our MG1s (serial # 137786) from New Horizons Hi-Fi in Billings Mt. We still remember being awed by the musicality, openness and huge sound stage when we listened to them for the first time in this small town “hi-fi” store. They were only moved once to our current home in Minnesota and have been our prime listening speakers since that time. They began sounding a bit “muddy” about 18 months ago. Not knowing if that sound was a product of the speakers getting tired or just our hearing going to heck, we delayed replacing or repairing them until last week. had a chance to audition the new 1.7i and it brought us back to our first listening experience and confirmed that it wasn’t our hearing.
    In December of 2017, we auditioned and purchased a pair of used 1.7s from a very happy former owner who needed to create more space in his home office. They continue to amaze. I am unsure how many other speaker manufacturers can make the case that their products will deliver quality sound for 35 years without replacement or repair. My wife found the old paperwork (receipt/manual) and while $595.00 was a lot of money for a couple of schoolteacher types at the time, we have never regretted the investment in quality sound.
    Well done!

Slept in someones backyard.that night. Finally made it to the concert site Saturday morning. People don't tell you, but that weekend when it wasn't raining the sun was blazing. Sometimes it rained while the sun was blazing. The concession sold food and drink, which was hard to find. Of course, a coke was about $10 I think, so that was out of the question. I never had a chance to get high that weekend. The site sloping down to the stage was a trail of mud. The entire pasture was a muddy mess. People also don't tell you that no one bathed for the entire time they were there. The place, the site, everyone, stunk. I hitched a bunch of rides home that Sunday afternoon to Staten Island, NYC. Took the ferry across to Manhattan, then the subway to Brooklyn. Missed the first Yale Bowl between the Jets and the Giants. That pissed me further.

      I think that depends on the size of the Maggie (and also how loud you listen). For rock and pop, most people will want subs on the smaller Maggies to extend the bass and allow the speakers to play louder. But with each increment in size, you get more bass extension and slam. My old Tympanis are good to 25 Hz, the 20.7's go down to 20, and the 30.7's go even deeper. I don't think most people would need a sub with those. The 3.7 is more in-between, you might or might want a sub depending on how loud you listen. I think the best thing to do is to get the speakers first, let them burn in and position them, and then make a decision about whether you want a sub or not.
      Another consideration for rock is that planar bass is better for natural instruments like double basses and subs, but it doesn't pressurize the room like a dynamic woofer does, so it has less of a slam effect.
      But I really love big Maggies on rock. Good recordings can be stunningly lifelike on the natural parts of the mix -- voice, drums, etc.

      @@Josh442 I have a theory that the LRS sounds at least as good as a .7 and a 1.7i in the high end only. Freezer Burn I called Magnepan and as usual - great customer service. They take customer inquiries and issues very seriously. Every time they have an actual engineer or even business development person on the phone - not some part time customer service stooge. After a discussion with them, the cost to fix them didn’t make sense in consideration of the age. Hence it makes a good excuse to buy a new set. This is my third set of Maggies and happy to upgrade.
      FYI - The damage certainly wasn’t Magnepan’s fault. I had a chair tip over which caused a domino effect onto my speaker. I can still play it and still sounds great as long as I keep the volume moderate. This set will now go into my bedroom.

    A twofer:
    Have Magnepan users grown tired of them? Or is it just restlessness that cause me to find a lot of people who "used to have a pair of Maggies..."?
    What does it take to drive a pair to achieve say 115 dB crescendos at 10 feet in a moderately damped room? Can a class D drive them thusly of must it be a hefty A-B? (I would bi-amp a set of subwoofers below about 50-70 Hz.)
    Anybody out there doing this with success?

    • @miketomas8564
      @miketomas8564 3 роки тому

      Jim. I've never measured my dB levels, However, I did add a dual 12" sealed sub to the room for a while but found that the drivers were slow to respond and thus had to place them in the center of the room under a coffee table to minimize the muddy bass. But now that I've found the sweet spots for the Maggies, I'm finding I really don't need any additional bass then they can produce. I'm getting some great bass levels from The Chemical Brothers, Apollo 440, and Crystal Method. And Yes- they do get a little Philharmonic, Solti and Wagner from time to time. But mostly Cream. Lot's of Cream (not the group).

      You are right. We also sold a ton of Acoustats. We started with the Direct Drive 3 panel monitor, and then went from there. Sold all kinds of 2+2 and all the other for many years. I still own my original Monitor 4 in oak. I have had the units upgraded a number of times. But for about 45 years plus, my Monitor 4 have never had a problem. High quality for the audiophile is what it is all about. Great products stand the test of time. Loved having my own high end store (Audiophile Specialists In) in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Great products and great customers. Both speakers are great. My first planar was the Maggies Tympani 3, which was sold at the time through Audio Research. Used a D76 with a SP3A preamp. But I loved the Acoustats much better. Great people at Acoustat.

      Have you heard the .7's and in particular the 30.7?

    • @Josh442
      @Josh442 5 років тому +4

      @Steve Tllsdaleys My old Tympani IVA's go down to 25 Hz, the 20.7's go to 20 Hz, and the 30.7's are actually a few dB up at 20 Hz -- I don't know how far below that they go. Bass really depends on the size of the Maggie. Some Apogees were tuned to have deeper bass response for a given diaphragm and baffle size, but since there's only so much energy available for acoustic equalization, that came at the expense of a suckout in the midbass which you can see in some of the old Stereophile reviews.
      Build quality, certainly, although they haven't aged well and in-warranty ribbon failures apparently contributed to the demise of Apogee (though I understand the main factor was the cost of making the Grand). Crossovers, perhaps back in the day, but current Maggies use single pole series XO's with better caps than the old ones and it doesn't get much better than that. Drivers, well, historically the Maggie ribbon tweeter was better than Apogee's, the ribbon midrange of the Apogees was better than the Magnepan midrange, the Apogees foil woofers were better in some respects than the Maggie's wire woofers. But all of this is old tech, the current Maggies use foil instead of wire and the new high quality midrange on the 30.7 is at least as good as the Apogee midrange ribbons (though not available on the smaller models).
