The coolant system should be pressurized all the time. Being pressurized, will not allow cooland to boil at 100 degrees Celsius and the engine wil run more efficient with high temperature. Grate video, like always!
With coolant added and under pressure an engine coolant system can be 120 plus before it boils. It's usually radiator caps on Vauxhall's that cause bother, seen loads faulty. They leak and don't let the coolant pressurise then the temp for the fan to come on isn't reached. I've seen Vauxhall's that are set to 114 degrees. Dash's show running temp at 90 because that's how it's always been and would frighten most people to see it over 100. With the new bottle the system is under pressure it changes the temp. Always fit new cap with a head gasket fault.
Great video, you are not being petty. If you have certain standards you expect the same. Show you are proud of your work and do not like cutting corners.
The temperature gauges on modern cars aren't really accurate and are just there to assure the driver that the engine is within normal operating temperature they actually have a really large buffer range, on VAG cars for instance when it's bang on at 90º the actual temperature can be anywhere between 75ºC to 115ºC.
This is what I got my suspicions from I came from several older cars 80s and early 90s, then suddenly jumped into 2010s, I know modern temperature gauges don't so warm up the same and are suspiciously rock steady whether you're in on a cold day or weather in a hot day in traffic
I followed your idea basically I had a leaking you can’t even see but then I had watermark all over the engine then I found out what is the leaking radiator hose on the right hand side of the engine fixed it now the fan comes on every 10 minutes when the engine is hot thank you for your idea

Makes me wonder if someone cut the expansion tank deliberately to either ruin the engine or use that to sell them a replacement (oh look water is coming out your head gasket is gone) 🙄 there are so many idiots out there anything is possible. I think the sensor in the bottom of the tank is probably to signal that it's run dry as opposed to temperature. Super video though, another great fix 👍🏻

Currently have problem where the fan did not shut off after cooling the temp, not sure if you've come across that. Working since but haven't been stuck in traffic as I was that day. Relay? Coolant bottle looks low, no leaks around right side, but maybe water pump.

I pulled the ect sensor connector and fan kicks on high car idle. I pull the rad sensor connector and fan does nothing car idle. The car rad sensor gets to 106 and the diagnostic shows the relay 1 open but fan do not kick. Then relay 2 open at 110 ect sensor and fan runs at low speed. I test the fan relays with diagnostic and fan 1 relay do not open when activated fan nor working, but fan 2 relay do and is low speed. I swap relays and both relays are working. i am little stumped. LM Auto Repairs I hope My last comment didn’t come across as a dig towards you. your work and knowledge is outstanding and put “so called professionals” to shame
Hey, I have an Opel Insignia 2015 B20. MY radiator fan is not working, I have changed the temperature sensor and the thermostat. But it is still not working. Could you help me out? Is there a radiator relay, do you know the location for this. I googled but it shows for Insignia A and not B cars.
You will just going to carry on changing parts, if you don't stop and diagnose it correctly... Give it a scan, and check live data... You can try to actuate the fan, if it runs, then you issue will not be the fan system... Hope that helps... 👍👍👍
@@LMAutoRepairs Hey thank you for the information. I have tried to start the fan manually and it works fine. I have cleaned the radiator too and put in a new thermostat. Does the thermostat sensor have any connection with the fan? or the temperature sensor? Do you reside in Ireland or UK? I do not have a scan to check live data. Do you know where I can get that checked? Thanks again. (The isn't any codes coming up, I tried to check with a code checker device from amazon. The engine does not over heat and the fan does not work, but I get a message on my dashboard saying to switch engine off after driving 5-10 kms)
OK... so, if actuating the fan with the tool, the fan works, clearly there is nothing wrong with it... When you say the fan does not run/works, under which circumstances are you expecting it to do so, and it doesn't?
@@LMAutoRepairs When I start the engine, and the car is running. The radiation fan does not turn on. After few minutes of driving, I get a message on my dashboard, to switch the car engine off. The engine overheats and basically the water is not circulating. I am expecting the radiator to turn on when I start the engine. It is a diesel car, there is no coolant leak either or head cylinder leak. Engine is running fine, no trouble with starting the car either. It is just the radiator fan that is not working. So not sure what the issue is :(
OK... I had a quick look at diagrams... the fan is controlled directly by the engine ecu, by activating a relay in the engine compartment... there is about 5 relays on that system, but again, if when you activate the fan, it runs, then I wouldn't blame that side as the issue... To be fair, the fan shouldn't activate just by driving a few minutes... again, you need to check live data, and see what readings are reaching the ecu... A bad water pump can also be considered... if the water is not circulating, it will or can give you similar symptoms... 👍👍👍
In fact, a problem of the same sort happened with me 3 weeks ago when a 2008 Nissan Altima with 3.5L came to me with the check engine light is on and cooling fans not working even when the car gets overheated. I scanned the car & I found a code for the ECTs, I checked wires (5V ref & Ground) the circuit was intact from the ECM to the ECTs, everything was good. I decided to buy new ECTs because when I plug the connector into the ECTs the car starts stumbling and it shuts off straight away and when you restart the car with (foot on pedal) it keeps running until it reached boiling temperature while the cooling fan is shut off. even with the new ECTs nothing's changed, I left the car and the next morning I checked the Live Data I found that the ECTs was reading (-40) celsius even when the connector is unplugged!. When I keep the connector plugged the car won't start unless I unplug it then the car would start with cooling fans at high speed. That problem really freaked me out and I couldn't find a path to solve the problem. Then the customer took the car back to another workshop who found that the cooling fan Relay was not working properly they replaced the relay, the problem was solved! A relay really?!!
You've proven my theory about modern temperature guages, and I feel ok that my car doesn't have a temperature, just a warning light, .. those gauges just to show you a fault not the real information
Be as it may, I rather have a gauge that tells me progressively if the engine is starting to get too hot then a sudden light that turns on when the engine is already overheating.
@@t0nito that's just it if you looked at the gauge doesn't tell you progressively, it shows the solid 90 even when the fan came on. It only after officially shows three things cold normal and too late
@@jusb1066 yes but when it starts climbing upward of 90º you know it is *starting* to overheat when you have a warning light and it turns on I believe it means it's already overheated.
@@t0nito you've missed the point it doesn't climb, it's showed 90 when it was 108 with fan. It's not a temperature gauge anymore it's literally a malfunction status as a light bulb
The fans look to be running off radiator temp, modern temperature and oil gauges not much better than a light . car manufacturers do that so gauges dial indicators dont move up and down a lot.
I had a similar problem on opel corsa, but corsa have not have antifreez in the cooling system and water starts to boil at 100C and was boiling before the fan kick in,so i put mixture of 50/50 antifreeze and was fine.I think that desired temp is to high, the 90~95 is a stndard for most cars, anyway very nice video
On the astra h the sensor on the tank is for the check control system. You need to active it in the infotainment screen with op-com but you also need to washer level sensor installed otherwise it wil always show your out of washer liquid.
From one techician to another, what where they thinking to cut the radiator expansion tank?? Good man!! after replacing the radiator expansion tank, now know that your job was done100%
Thanks mate this just proves my mechanic dient know as much as he thinks. I used to hear my fan running when i got out of the car. I havnt heard it come on once since he worked on it changed coolent etc. Im gonna have to get it on diagnosis. Thank you.
Why did the backyard scam mechanic ruin a perfectly good car how did he think it's wise to cut the tank . Do you think he did it so it would blow a gasket or short out something else in the engine bay and the customer would have to come back to him again should have went to you in the first place
I had similar case - Insignia, 1.8 petrol, costumer came in to me with fan problem. Fan was running all the time, no temp readings on dash. Obviously I checked for fault codes and it was one - temp sensor open circuit. Before he came in to me, car had head gasket done and before he had done it, everything was ok with fan. When I started to look on temp sensor, I was in shock - somebody cut out a piece of wire with plug to temp sensor!!! I suggested to costumer to come back to previous guy to repair it. After few days he came back to me and said that previous "mechanic" said that he isn't car electrician and he won't do it!!! Finally I fixed it, sent costumer to scrap yard to buy piece of wire with plug, soldered it on and it was fine. I don't understand why people doing stupid things like these ones. Even if he broke plug when he was lifting head for gasket replacement, why he cut out wire?? So stupid... BTW another great video shoving how bad some "mechanics" are "skilled"
Another case of Bogging. Car gets bought by used car dealer he only employs cheap labour. Tells the cheap labour to just get the car running to sell on quick with little or no money to be sent, chances are neither the booger or dealer knows what they are doing. That where the bogging starts. No thoughts for the poor punter that buys the shed.

Slaging other mechanics is not very professional as well when yourself don’t look confident at what you say. You say everything is fine but your thermostat is naked
I might not be too confident, but I learn and do things properly... I don't bodge things pretending I know what I am doing... as most of the repairs I do, I don't know what the problem is, I investigated, learn how things work so I then understand how to fix them... the radiator temperature and the ECT had to be on the desired value . And these people who so called work on cars every day , they might be but they are …… and doing it wrong . They should get some schooling in difference between water and cooling fluid and it's use and about the reason why a cooling system is being pressurised . You made a clear point why some people should never touch a car

Thanks!
Were did you get 5 volt reference to jump back to ecu. Thanks
By shorting the pins in the connector. That wire is just a loop.

😬
That's interesting...
Really interesting...
🤔
Thanks for watching and sharing that!
Very strange! The relay has nothing to do with it.
@@engeneer_ru5827 I know that a relay would never do this, but that's what happened.

You've proven my theory about modern temperature guages, and I feel ok that my car doesn't have a temperature, just a warning light, .. those gauges just to show you a fault not the real information
Correct!
👍👍👍
It's not a temperature gauge anymore it's literally a malfunction status as a light bulb
what is the model of your Autel scanner please, thanks
MS908P
Thanks!
GM motors like them to run really hot 🥵 for emissions.
Thanks!
I noticed that radiator temp and ECT seemed to be going up at a similar rate from cold (possible thermostat issue as well)
The fans look to be running off radiator temp, modern temperature and oil gauges not much better
than a light . car manufacturers do that so gauges dial indicators dont move up and down a lot.
that Astra J Engine Code is Z16XER
Probably...
Thank you for watching!
Or A16XER 😁
I had a similar problem on opel corsa, but corsa have not have antifreez in the cooling system and water starts to boil at 100C and was boiling before the fan kick in,so i put mixture of 50/50 antifreeze and was fine.I think that desired temp is to high, the 90~95 is a stndard for most cars, anyway very nice video
Thanks!
👍👍👍
What you think is not in line with the engineering of the ecu software on opel.
liviu2004 that was only my opinion, coolant temp above boilng point is not good for engine head gasket and engine health generally
cro_ 82 most of the cars fans kick in at 105, seen mini cooper 112.5 degree kick in!!! Almost all of them above 100!!

31:00 you mean expansion tank coolant level low sensor?
Yep, but I guess this is ECU version doesn't take any notice, it would have found some kind of error or had a data PID
@@jusb1066 Not necessarily. Is that going to ECU or BCM friend? Have you checked the wiring or we just post for fun?
On the astra h the sensor on the tank is for the check control system. You need to active it in the infotainment screen with op-com but you also need to washer level sensor installed otherwise it wil always show your out of washer liquid.

Nothing wrong with the thermostat by the way...
