another great video. I really like it when folks talk about some of those hidden secrets in our industry. Secrets that kind of plague or give our industry a little bit of a black eye. For example, like how dive shops as a whole seem to avoid or evade paying FICA or state employee unemployment taxes but then turn around and treat their 1099 subcontractors as if they are employees. I think some agencies even condone this practice and will tell instructors that you have to affiliate with a retail dive center, you have to wear a uniform which is the equipment that they sell in the retail store etc etc. I'd love to see a video on that one
Nice to hear a training center that points out the facts. I’ve seen shops do this to there dmc’s. I personally feel the same way,and this practice played a large part in my choice to not advance any farther beyond DM. It’s unfair to expect people to work for free. I don’t mind helping if asked a question by a customer if I’m in the shop. To ask someone to turn down overtime at there real job, or to loose family time or ..... is a violation of standards and honestly unprofessional of the shop owner. It can also create customers that are not served to the level of what the shops goals are. If the shop wants more sales people they should hire or pay commissions. If the trainee is looking for a career in this industry that training should be as an employee or employee training program not as a dive professional. They are not the same thing in my book. Great subject and really gutsy of you to put it out there
Im in the end of my 4-month divemaster internship and have no complains at all. It's a "free" internship, where you get the training for free and then spend the rest of time working to pay it off. The work consist of only taking customers diving, fundivers/dsds and sometimes we have to pack equipment (running schedule) for next days dive which most times takes around 30-60 min. We do no shop work, no sales work, no filling tanks, no carrying equipment to boat as work permit is required (Thailand). the knowledge and experience (>200 dives), taking customers, learn equipment etc. I think will help a lot when looking for a job in this hard job-finding industry, instead of just paying for a 2 week program with 0 actual working experience. Though I know to be careful when looking for internships because not every diveshop is taking care of their staff.
Hello ComboBreakeR7, glad to hear your internship is going well for you. Best of luck on earning your Divemaster Certification, and welcome to the professional world of Scuba Diving.
Thank you for the video. Great knowledge! What would be fair terms for an internship if it is not 6 months? 6 weeks? 2 months? What do good intern programs offer? Does a portal for intern programs exist? Maybe with ratings/reviews.
It just depends on the terms set by the individual store. Typically when we hire a new Instructor or Divemaster, they will get paid for the services rendered and agreed upon during the hiring process. In our case, Instructors and Divemasters are required to have all their own gear, which must be purchased from us (at cost of course) and they usually will teach their first few classes with another Instructor supervising them. This is just the make sure they understand the policies and procedures of Lake Hickory Scuba. Also, the more experience Instructor is there to assist them in any way necessary. This of course being one of the biggest reasons internships are so very important after the fact. Most new Instructors are typically thrown into the field without any guidence. Having an experienced Instructor there assisting them, gives them an extra resource to make sure they are providing their students the best quality of training. As far as time frame, it just depends on the new Instructor. Someone who is use to teaching or who works in retail may not need as much time as someone who maybe has only worked in construction or some other type of industry where supervision was not part of their daily job requirements. Hope this answers your question. Oh and as far as a portal, SSI has a link on the professional log in page, where you can see what jobs are available all over the world.
Great insight. How would one go about getting an internship as equipment tech are. This something I'm very intersted in making this my retirement plan. Would like to hear your thoughts on the viability of this for me say somewhere in the Carribbean like Roatan Beleize or???
Most equipment technicians start out as employees of a shop or Dive Center. Once the class is offered, its as easy as simply signing up for it, paying for it, and then taking the class. Get up with your local Dive Center and see what they have to offer.
Love your channel, but most annoying intro music on UA-cam. And so loud compared to the voice volume. Please adjust when you can, and keep up the good work.
Yeah that was crazy my local dog center basically told me the same thing And that the SSI minimum requirements are supposed to be met with 8 internship type situation I asked them why if I was paying for the course Why should I have to do a internship And I was still that's how it's supposed to be which is a load of crab out a completely other side note love the back drop for serious conversations And the man Fur doesn't hurt either lol
Thanks Rev Tech Marine. And I meant to message you today in regard to the 6mm Plate. I will do it first thing in the morning for you. I got tied up today with scheduling.
Duly noted adrian pereda, others have shared the same opinion. We thought we would try a new format to see how people would react. Thank You for letting us know what you think.
