I'm a DM in Alaska and honestly the worst part about being a DM up here is the amount of time we spend in the water. We are first in last out setting down lines and floats. My OW instructor made all of us schlepp our own gear, do all our set up and checks ourselves. It was tough, lotta gear for cold water diving, but it made all of us much better divers. Now, even in places where people do all the set up, I still make sure to check through everything as a final check, because it's my butt that'll be on the hook if something's not right!
The diff between DM and DI "those who can't do teach" LOL DM here for 15yrs mostly dive leader but I have done some helper to the DI and all true what you said all too true! I do Tech as well and there is a world of diff from tech to rec diving I love it all, but I really loved playing the distress diver it was always fun.
Agree, 7 year DM here Instructor cert on the horizon. I feel ALL good instructors spend a few years as DMs. I'm also a deep Tec diver and I feel that makes me a more competent DM. If I can handle divers at 200 feet, 40-120 ain't nothin.
I want to find some kind of internship in Dive centre in 2020 to work and get qualified after that. Not sure where exactly, but it could be anywhere in the world tbh. I've found out that working 9-5 isn't for me, so probably I'm gonna go for working in dive centre in future. Also, I definitely want to be instructor - just for myself, not even as a job

Just completed my Rescue Diver 2 weeks ago and now started on my Dive Master Training, can’t wait to eventually complete it, but going to take my time to take it all in, then probably on to Instructor course :-)
Back in 2007, I signed up for the PADI - DM training. My PADI instructor did not charge me a cent. I was a DM trainee for almost three years. In this time, I did approx 250 open water dives, plus many pool dives, I learnd how to handle a boat, how to deal with customers in the shop and how to recommend products. I learned how to fill cylinders, how to use the marine radio... I was out there almost every weekend, many days just as the boat-bitch, doing slave labour... my reward: smilling faces, happy divers. In 2006 I went to Bali and a PADI shop there offerd me a DM training & certification for US$ 800 in 7-10 days... Well and now? What is better?
If you like to dive just go diving. Way to many people think they need to go the DM route. There is nothing useful about it unless you want to teach, once you start to teach something it gets less fun.
Tribal Sorry you are so wrong. For many teaching is a passion and the greatest reward. Now I am new back to diving but the reason I stopped many years ago was because of my skiing I was qualifying as a ski instructor and yes I have had days and ski runs when just out skiing I will never ever forget and skied with some of the most famous skiers but the biggest buzz was always seeing my students face when something they thought was impossible something they thought they could never do finally click and they did it. That moment is priceless you have to experience it to realise what teaching/doing any sport is truly about. Not saying everyone needs to be a DM or instructor for most just diving for pleasure is enough, but your statement that once you start to teach something it gets less fun is what is so wrong. Lastly there is something useful about taking instructor courses at any level it makes you think outside the box and any quality learning will always make you in this case a better diver.
I’ve never had a DM in the water with me, on all my dives they just help people get in and out of the water from the boat and check for the OK signal when we surface.
Long ago when I first started I went on every local trip that my dive shop had. Two weeks after being certified there was a trip to North Carolina to dive on the graveyard of the Atlantic. This one particular going to dive on was very deep and very technical and known to have sharks on it. It was a six-pack boat we were all from the same shop and I was outvoted on this. Started to go down and when I reach 120 ft that's when things went bad. My dive Master who I go with throughout my training realize what was happening to me and immediately grabbed me and took control. He physically put my hand back on the anchor line and started to put some air in my BC. Once we made a stop at 40 ft and then the rest of the time was at 15 ft. Once I started realizing what had happened my dive Master everything under control and started me on a second bottle of air that was kept at 15 feet. After 45 minutes I finally made my way to the surface. Immediately I had everybody's attention. I was very fortunate that my divemaster was there and knew me well enough to realize I was in trouble. Now the bad part. Once we return home I always stop back off at the dive shop to talk about what we did. When the shop owner and manager found out what wreck I was on and how deep I went we're not happy that he took me and another new diver down that deep. I tried to explain to them it wasn't his fault I even explained how he saved me. That is when things got worse when they found out what happened to me and why. they clearly made sure I knew that it wasn't my fault but I don't feel it was the fault of my dive Master he did not twist my arm or the other divers. I unfortunately after that they fired him. I have great respect for dive Masters and for a long time I was working on becoming one. It just didn't work out do to life getting in the way. I would one day very much love to start over and reach my goal.
Well as a divemaster, you are responsible to follow standard procedures and stay within the limits, which I guess the said divemaster did not... though it happens a lot that professionals get a bit too comfortable and exceed the limits, which most times end up fine, but IF an incident occur and emergency service, insurance etc. get involved, then you are in deep deeeeeeep trouble.
He planned badly, broke the rules, and put you in danger. That's why he was fired. He didn't rescue you from an unforeseeable emergency, he caused the emergency by taking you on a deep dive that you were not certified and trained for. The vote should have never included sites outside the limits of the least experienced participant. Always dive conservatively.
I have 400 dives logged and that is not including training dives, bimbling in pools, testing equipment dives or just a few recreational dives in our local lake. Whenever I go overseas (twice a year to the Caribbean) I only ever show my Rescue Certificate and it becomes obvious I've put the hours in. By showing that ticket, I get to enjoy my recreational dives and feel no pressure. Had to step in a few times because of the "holiday" divers, but hey ho, all fun blowing bubbles !
Under PADI, Master Scuba Diver is a recreational certification that simply requires 50 dives, rescue training and any 5 specialties, but does not involve any specific training on its own. Divemaster is, instead, the first level of professional certification in the recreational diving world. It similarly requires rescue training, but is also partnered with specific training including more detailed study of the sciences surrounding diving, protecting students under training, being responsible for leading certified divers above and below water, and salesmanship. Further, the divemaster program includes additional skills testing. You are required to demonstrate all of the open water skills to a higher standard, as well as to perform a handful of more strenuous swims and skills. Finally, some level of search and recovery and deep diving training is required. Also, you need to pay annually to keep your divemaster status active, keep up to date with any changes to course materials if they are relevant to dives you are working, and depending on locale, consider paying for professional liability insurance.
@@aymenem5304 Its not much. I agree with everything horrerkid said about being a DM. If you decide to go that route then l can say the rewards outway the costs dramatically
Dive Master, at least for me, changed completly the view, attitude and ability to dive. First was Rescue to change my diving life, second was the DM. Many people wants to be a better diver. i suppose the only way is to challange your self doing the rescue course than few specialities like the wreck and the deep and than go for DM.
Overall, sport diving training has been dummied down to the point of no return. The only organization that appears to have maintained a higher than normal quality of instruction is LA County.
Best and worst thing about being a DM, Rescue Course! Worst because you kit may well get lost, like my prescription mask... Best because you get to be panicked divers and go for regs and masks! Especially to the instructor during demonstrations. Go in with malicious intent on the instructor, once you have their reg and mask, then panic. Great fun
A bit off topic, but... Im a dm who did the controversial zero to hero. I must say I dont agree about it being controversial. My training was geared towards being professional since my first dive ever, there was never any time to pick up any bad habits. And with diving, assisting, and taking dsds every day for 4 months, the learning curve was very steep. Did 140 dives in those 4 months, and was CLEARLY better than many of the customers who had hundreds of dives. I'll be going for owsi, but only because I feel more employable that way. I'd be happy continueing dm'ing forever if i could make it work.
Speaking of sucky dives I had some bad experience recently with cressi products. The new mask keeps fogging. I used it several times but still kept fogging. Finally i took a lighter to the glass. Will try again soon and see if it helped. Hopefully i did not damage the seal😅Also their supernova dry top snorkel stinks, literally. Reeks like chemicals. And the mouthpiece is extremely small. Like youth sized. And the replacement mouthpiece all seem the same size. I regret buying it overall and not very impressed with the mask, tbh. Next time I will try a different brand.
@@simplyscuba watching that review I never thought about shining a light at the watch and the dial being too dazzling from a metallic dial color. Brilliant thinking there also it is indeed a very smart watch!
Why would the DM write down all that detailed info for each diver? If you want to keep track of your depth and how much gas you used (and you should) you need to be logging it yourself.
It's more of an accounting process. Making sure all divers are back on the boat before you leave. Max depths, dive time and gas in/out just additional info to pad out the accounting process

I just doing my divemaster course, that's exactly what you sad haha, can you recommend which equipment should be the best for teaching? BSD & Regulator
Yep, dive guide/ dive leader is the best job in the world. my friend. This video is just so wrong about so many things. Just plain ignorant, really.

I'm at Rescue Diver level, and was thinking about becoming a Dive Master, but after listening to this I think I'll just keep it as a recreational hobby lol
Another great video guys, thank you.
Unfortunately I strongly agreed to this video but somehow also strongly disagrees😁 I been through becoming a DMT and becoming a DM for a year now, lugging those tanks and equipments really was grunt work but alot of things can be learnt from this as well 🙂 I am happy being a DM and now I am on my way to becoming Dive Instructor as well 😊. Sometimes I stop by just to get more info from this awesome channel and get pro tips 😁😁 awesome videos and advices. Thumbs up for me. Btw greetings from Malaysia 🇲🇾 (Borneo side/East Malaysia)
Im thinking about doing my DM IN FLORIDA NEXT WEEK LOOKING FOR A NICE dive shop
And your just making it hard for me🤦🏼♂️
Don't believe this video, my friend, it is wrong about so many things.
Would you explain please ?
Thankyou
Birds Underwater Dive shop in Crystal River!
Working as a dive master - safety diver got me lots of free dive trips .
what is the different between dive master and master scuba diver.
@@horrorkld9 cool, thanks.
BlackPaw how much should we pay evry year to keep the DM STATU Im planning to take DM CLASSES this month
@@aymenem5304 Its not much. I agree with everything horrerkid said about being a DM. If you decide to go that route then l can say the rewards outway the costs dramatically
BlackPaw you cannot be an instructor without being a DM
WE SHOULD Just suck it up mates
Great fun
I wanna become a DM coz now I have dived enough. Thanks for the info. I enjoy diving
Being a DM is like hearding suicidal cats underwater.
What kind of watch are you wearing here!? Very nice dive watch.
That's our 500m Dive Watch, you can get a better look here:

@@simplyscuba hey ty for the reply!! Love the content!!
@@simplyscuba watching that review I never thought about shining a light at the watch and the dial being too dazzling from a metallic dial color. Brilliant thinking there also it is indeed a very smart watch!
Well I‘m gonna start my DMT in 2 weeks, looking forward to it now 👀😂
Why would the DM write down all that detailed info for each diver? If you want to keep track of your depth and how much gas you used (and you should) you need to be logging it yourself.
It's more of an accounting process. Making sure all divers are back on the boat before you leave. Max depths, dive time and gas in/out just additional info to pad out the accounting process
Is 64 too old to train as a DM or should I just stick at Master Scuba and take some technical diving courses ?
How have Ashley Young or Dele Alli not been mentioned in a topic about Dive Masters?🤣🤣.
A pro of being a DM is that they only have to look after hot girls in bikinis........or at least that’s all my DM was good for. 🤫
I’m going too Tenerife for 6 weeks too get my Divemaster and Master Scuba Diver... this just made me nervous 😂 haha nah everything has a first step
Thinking of going there, too. How did it go for you? Which Center? Employment offered?
Must be a UK thing, because I've never had a DM log my maximum depth or gas.
Team Peg Leg aren’t you supposed to write it yourself?
@@diveinstructordaniel1095 At least in the countries I've been to, if you want to write it down it is all up to you. Myself that is all in my dive computer download.
A few other countries do it but in the UK we are very much Health and Safety. A rescue diver has to be in the water during a course to be able to recover the instructor if something goes wrong with them
Thats because it is your job
DiveMasters Wash Equipenents, wash the Boat, DiveMasters babysitter, DiveMasters No Salary....😂
But I thought we divemasters are indestructible? 😂😂
I'm a pleb
This isn't what won the vote tho
Am I really the first person to comment on this video good job anyway
Grow up
I see my wetsuit in the back 😂 mares reef 😎
I think this guy was bullied as a dive master 😂
i cancelled my dm course after watching this
peter liu Actually being a DM can be wonderful.I would not miss a minute at the diving shop and our diving side,It all depends on your instructors

Mmmm yeah no thanks, this industry can be so toxic lol The need men have to feel a little "superior" than others is patheetlc 🫢
