How many lakes are there "really" in The Lake District - there's more than 1

  • There are many lakes in The Lake District (obviously) but there is a common misunderstand that only a lake with Lake in the Title is truly a lake. Obviously this is wrong, as there are many lakes in The Lake District.
This misunderstanding, is very common and came about due to the naming of an 1860’s train station, on the shore of Broadwater Lake, after a local Lake District village called Bassenthwait. To differentiate between the station and the village the station was named Bassenthwait Lake. After some time this name was given to the lake itself and Broadwater became Bassenthwait Lake.
As all the other large bodies of water had been named in the previous centuries, which is those days named lakes either meres or waters, Bassenthwait Lake was the only large body of water with Lake in the title - and this is where the misunderstanding came from.

This channels waffles are more entertaining and informative that most channels entire videos. So a dedicated waffle video is like a Christmas present.

Brilliant Waffle! I only come for the waffle, not the map and compass stuff! (Ok, that’s not true but I like the combo)

Its a bit like rivers in Sweden. We have no (=0) rivers in Sweden. That's even less then the number of lakes in the Lake District.

I think the lake thing is just a little fun trivia which as he even explains is correct by title and Bass isn't a lake either it's a train station.

Also their geological terms are all lakes: Windermere is a 'ribbon lake'. Ullswater is a 'glacial lake' etc.

I spent much of my younger years in The Lakes, and even I have erroneously called Windermere "Lake Windermere."😱

Are there several districts in the Lake District area? How many train stations are there?

There used to be many, many train stations in the Lake District and all over the UK.
Google search "Beeching Cuts" and this will explain why the arn't so many any more.

Therefore initial base point definitions are critical - otherwise "“When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less.’
’The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’
’The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master - that’s all.” Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass .

It’s sounds like a fun play on words and the kind of dad joke my father would have said. Therefore, I’m going to agree that there is only one lake. 😊

There are a couple, for example the Lake of Menteith in Stirlingshire. I believe it comes from the Scots word laich, meaning 'low' or 'low lying place,' don't know if that's the same root as the English word 'Lake' or not...

When we were kids we were told that it is the only Lake in Scotland because it was named after Stewart of Menteith, who was the man that betrayed William Wallace, so it was a snub to him, but that is just an old wives tale :)@@astrecks
