I had a medical emergency on an international flight earlier in the year. I got pretty dehydrated and passed out when getting up to go to the bathroom. The flight attendants (American Airlines as well) did a great job getting me to come to and getting me help from a doctor that was onboard. I got everything I needed and felt 100% fine by the time we landed. Huge props to flight attendants and all that you have to put up with! You're truly saving lives!

On the news it was reported that a woman started to have chest pains during the fight. The flight attendant asked if there was medical staff onboard. There were 13 cardiologists going to a cardiac conference.

One time I got on a flight to see it empty!
I asked why and the FA said it was full and over booked, but at the last moment all of the passengers who were going to a psychics conference just got up and left.
( Just a bit of humor, in the midst of some serious stuff folks!)

I work as a dispatcher for your airline and I am the one that patches you guys in with the POC. You summed it up really well. One thing I will point out is while the call is going on, we are communicating with the captain on the ground usually coming up with a plan if we do need to divert for medical. You guys do a great job in these situations usually, and I know it’s not easy. Thanks for all you do for us, your work does not go unnoticed.

Julia, I was a Flight Dispatcher for 8 years. One night one of my redeye flights out of LAX to ATL a male pax 54YO was experiencing chest pains. I got a SAT-phone call from the CA, we got Medlink on the call and I went into a monitoring mode listening in and started to formulate a plan of action for diversion airport enroute. Ironically there was a cardiac IC nurse onboard. Medlink advise the CA to pull the medical bag and start an IV which the nurse helped out and did.I had 4 diversion airports planed PHX ABQ DFW and MSY. The PAX stabilized and Medlink cleared us on. 4.5 hours later they landed in ATL with medics at the gate. The PAX was taken to the hospital, ATL happened to be his hometown. Medlink is an amazing resourse and so was the IC nurse. I have BTW had 3 deaths on flights I dispatched, not a great feeling.

Honestly, Julia, I don't know how you flight attendants do it day in and day out.
Now, let me open up to you about a good experience I had with a flight attendant.
I was on a US Airways flight from Pittsburgh to Phoenix with my family. My siblings and I had a row, and our mother was across the aisle from us. I unfortunately had a head cold at the time. As we started our descent into Phoenix, I got a splitting headache. A flight attendant was coming up the aisle, noticed that I looked out of sorts, and asked if I was all right. My headache was so bad I couldn't get an answer out. My mother intervened at that point and asked the flight attendant to get some water for me. I survived the descent and landing, but at that point I was so exhausted I just wanted to get to bed.
Thanks for everything you do every day!

My first flight at 21 I had a panic attack. It sucked. The flight attendant sat w me the whole time and just talked with me. It was such an amazing gesture. Because I felt very off and was scared due to not knowing what was happening. I also felt bad for taking his time up, he reassured me that's what he was there for. It was a small plane and not a whole of passengers.

Back in the early 2000's I experienced a medical emergency while flying from London to Germany and the flight attendants were extremely helpful (it was nothing serious and I made a full recovery). I did think for a minute that they were so helpful because they knew I was travelling on a friends flight benefits but I dismissed that thought as quick as thought it. You guys do an amazing job. Thank you.

I was coming home after the special Olympics last year in berlin and it was a really long way back, 4 hs in train from Berlin to Duesseldorf from there we got in the first plane to Spain, during the landing i started a seizure. It was really chaos trying to figuring out next steps after we land. I was in Narnia at first because is slept pretty much the entire flight and after a seizure you feel like a truck knocked you off. I was there staring at everyone as i see all my team (80 people) go down the plane including my coach, and i was there with our doctor and some other sports coach who had my back pack and was stilling the show 😂.
But something i would never forget is the emphatic and loving flight attendants! They all decided to stay until someone bring a wheelchair for me.
And they talk to me, they explain me that there was a lot of pressure change that day and humidity. And they just wait there until they i think noticed they gained my trust a little more and also i was already completely aware of my surroundings, and one of them sit on one of the empty sites, i was nervous looking for answers and nobody looked at me. But that flight attendant stay calm, talked to me, asked about the games, about how i was feeling, and that pure women didn't receive an answer for a while... it was a tricky situation i have autism and all the sudden i was there after a seizure feeling awful and my coach had left. But at some point i was able to answer to her with my voice and i was so proud of me and sooo happy for her!!! She probably realizes that i never looked at any of them in the eyes but they got my ❤. Finally the captain came to talk to our doctor and they argue a little and he left, came back 15min later and clear us up to board the next flight ✈️ wich was a 12hs flight from spain to Uruguay my country in south America.
Of course i was asked a million questions by our doctor, and told that we could stay and all of that. He knows me and thats why we flew, he knew i was ok. They told me that while we were starting to land he was "eye checking" on everyone, and when he looked at me he told Andres MOVE ON, to the coach that was sitting next to me. Until today Andres says he don't know what he saw but he knew it was coming, they switched sites really fast because me and because LANDING, and as soon as he sit next to me i seized.

I think a lot of people intentionally avoid being properly hydrated before flying because they dread using the bathrooms, and/or if not in an aisle seat, making their row-mates get up and move to let them out. Or they've flown enough to realize there are times on bumpy flights when you might have to wait up to two hours with a painfully tight bladder before being allowed to leave your seat (I have broken that rule a couple of times over the decades and the more experienced FAs seem to give you "the look" but let you do that unless it's extreme turbulence.) Dehydration is a bigger problem for older folks who get dehydrated more easily. Of course the other side of this issue is being over-hydrated and having to get up every 30 minutes. P.S....Former Pioneer athlete from the 1970s here :>).

Hi Julia, I frequently catch your channel, but being a retired paramedic for Chicago and worked at Midway Airport for many years, this one caught my attention. I frequently responded to meeting flights at the gate for many different medical emergencies you described. I mainly dealt with SWA flight attendants, and were calm as you all were. Many flight crews (Captains/First Officers/Flight attendants) would come out and check on our patients once everyone was off the flight. While it might seem "routine" to us, you'd be surprised at how the littlest thing goes a long way. Many of my patients would compliment the flight attendants and I would always suggest they e-mail a complimentary word or two because they don't always hear good things from the public. Look calm (even if inside you're not...LOL), and always be nice to the paramedics!! LOL!!! Thanks for sharing, you all did great.

I'm fortunate enough where I've been able to manage it myself without any actual fainting happening, but it can be scary to know you're stuck in the air and aren't able to lay flat. If anyone else becomes faint or very light headed, what has helped me is to take deep breaths, close your eyes, put your seat back or head between legs (if you can), think of other things to distract yourself (if triggered by something) and tense your arm and leg muscles.

Speaking of medical emergencies there will be a whole bunch of EMTs, Paramedics, ER Docs, RN's, PA's converging on Vegas for a big event the 2nd week of September. Not that you want a medical emergency on a flight, but there is an extremely high likelihood that there will someone in the ems world on your flight that week.

As a passenger I once experienced a medical emergency landing. There was a doctor on the flight, who examined the passenger in question and asked the captain to land ASAP. The plane was going down so fast, I had never gone through anything like that on normal landings. An ambulance car and crew came up to our plane at the airport, they took the passenger off and we waited while they were assessing him in the ambulance. Finally, they shut the car's doors, and the ambulance went off with the patient, blue lights on and everything. We then waited for an hour for take off clearance, given that we had not been scheduled.
I still think of that passenger and hope he is OK!

Thankfully that’s all it was. It always seemed that I was the one doing a walk-thru and would discover a medical. The ol’ “you find it, it’s yours” sorta thing. But thankfully we always had medical doctors or nurses onboard when I had them. A few did require diversions.

Nice video. My wife is an RN and responded to a call for help on one of your flights from CLT to LAS. She was quite surprised by the medications and equipment you have on board, they gave her a list while she was evaluating the passenger. As it turned out, she thinks she was pregnant and having morning sickness but all turned out well.

With the book question when I see you read a book it reminds me that I should be reading. Fantasy is a really hard book genre for me. I had to force myself to finish shadow and bone and I haven’t pick up a fantasy book sense. I’m feel good romantic book lover and just finished my 33 book of this year and that is a big achievement for me

That is a huge achievement, that’s awesome!! Sometimes fantasy can be hard to get into because the world building is intense.

I admired you for all your reading and encouragement for others to read. I wish I could read a lot of books but do to medical conditions makes it difficult to read a book in total.

I’ve read a few books that you have recommended! My favourites were “Kyland”, “Love and Othe Words”, “The Collected Regrets of Clover”, “It Ends With Us” and “It Starts With Us”. I’m glad you were able to control the medical emergency on board. I’m an ICU nurse, I definitely would have given you a helping hand!

Great video as always! I first heard about Fourth Wing through some of your vlogs. I've never been a fan of fantasy, other than Harry Potter, but every time I'd walk into a bookshop, my eyes would keep falling on that Fourth Wing cover so I decided to give it a go and so far I'm enjoying very much!
    Kudos and happy landings!

Well if I had a medical emergency, couldn’t think any one else I would rather have checking on me. So far I’ve flown over 450 flights with no problems. Knock on wood. I keep hoping I’ll run into you at the Pheonix AirPort, but no luck so far. Be safe🌹
