This is great. I will adopt this. I see all of these three being the reason for my compulsive hoarding. Coming from a background of relative lack, I see why that could be so
I had a box on my bedroom floor for months that had odds and ends crap in it! I finally sat down on Saturday and went through it. About 50% of the papers got shredded and the rest thrown in the trash. I timed myself and it literally only took me 20 minutes to go through it! 🙈 The few remaining papers were tax related. What a great feeling to finally get rid of that box!

One of my favorite things is when she says, it doesn’t have to be finished. I was always raised and told to not do things “half way” (and I’m a VERY literal person) and that had held me back from so much in my life. I get distracted just like she said, and sometimes I don’t even have the mental energy to fully go though one container. So when she says that, it reaffirms that I have permission to just try and start something. Some really is better than none.
I have lost multiple family members. I have alot of their stuff. I have recently went through things. My sister is going to take it to our local cancer donation store. They were very happy to get them. I sent years buying things for my young younger years, I am letting that guilt finally. Thanks for your books and videos, blog, etc. You make a hugh difference in peoples lives .
Me, too. Half of my storage unit is old furniture and collectibles of other family who have passed away. The rest is box after box of old tax papers add supporting documentation that I haven't touched for 15 years. Yes, I have paid several times over their value. Goal: clear out the storage unit, have a shredding party, sell/donate the furniture. There are only 5 things in there I truly want to keep: my baby rocking chair, my lilac quilt, my aunt's teapot collection, my mom's handmade porcelain dolls, my teenage/college journals.
Thank you for this wonderful demonstration of the principle of decluttering without making a bigger mess. I really thought (unexamined expectation) that I *had* to take everything out in order to start decluttering a space. Now I realize the I am free to declutter only a part at a time, and I can just appreciate my progress at every stage, instead of feeling guilty because things are all over the floor instead of where they used to be or should move to. After watching this video I started decluttering a container that I have been looking at for actual YEARS. I'm not done with it yet, but it's got about 2/3 less stuff in it now. Again, literally more progress in two weeks than I had made in the preceding four years. I am so grateful.
I LOVE your sense of humor!!!! Your videos keep me on "the path" to decluttering and laughing through the overwhelming moments! Thank you a thousand times!!! ❤️
Yay! I've been cleaning out my bedroom. I'm doing the "take it where you'll look for it" plan and it's working. I'm getting something done and don't have a big mess. Thanks for all you do. You're awesome!

Hi Dana, I have been watching your videos and listening to your podcasts. I'm ordering your books this week! You have actually inspired me in a HUGE way!! I got up this morning and before I left my bedroom, I half filled a garbage bag for donate, found 2 bigger items to be donated, and started a garbage bag. I live in an apartment complex and we have a place for the donated stuff to go for others to use, so i don't even have to wait to get rid of it all! Yay!! Because of you, I am actually looking forward to finishing decluttering my home! Thanks to you, i have a plan in place and it is so simple to follow...too many instructions drive me nuts. I have ADD and OCD so i need simple!! I've written down your two questions to take with me thru my home, until I have memorized them. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I LOVE that scripture on your wall. 😊❤ You are so great for helping (EXTREMELY) ADHD people like me to declutter without getting overwhelmed! The older I get, the more I realize that ADHD is the chronic mindset of NOW. If I don't do it RIGHT NOW, it won't get done. If I don't write it down RIGHT NOW, I for sure WILL NOT remember it later. I am SO out of sight, out of mind. I need to apply these principles...take one item and take it where it belongs RIGHT NOW. I always end up sorting into piles on my bed, and inevitably, at least one of those piles won't get 100% handled and turns into a smaller pile somewhere else. Thank you so much! 😘💕❤
At first I kept thinking was this really necessary, but I persisted and am I glad! Because the reason I have a cluttered home is the inability to put things where they belong! Thank you for driving this point home!
Dana, my husband has been using "my" car since covid started, and I have been dreading cleaning it out! You just motivated me to remove a bag of trash, a bunch of tools, and a few kitchen coffee cups! Not done, but PROGRESS! Oh, and I have more dog hair than I ever thought possible, so I feel you in that concern!
We are finding so many of these since we've moved so many times there's always a few of the random stuff items that we should have just chucked in the garbage, but instead we gave them a cross country adventure in our moving trucks, lol
So many gems in this 9:29 "It's BeTtEr." "Let me save this for another time when I'm testing remotes." "I'm down to just a few pieces of hairy money." 😆😂 This is the best method! Thanks Dana.
The "Take it there right now" is absolutely essential. It means that if I have to quit in mid-process, then I am going to come back to something better and not worse than it was. Sooooooo important. In the past, I'd dump everything out and end up with a huge mess because I'd get called away before I could finish. It was paralyzing seeing such a bigger mess. (The Marie Kondo method does not work for me.) I've made so much progress thanks to you, Dana! AND ... I gave myself a rule ... I'm not allowed to add anything to those areas that I've begun working on. That's training me for how to keep things uncluttered. If I get overwhelmed, I sometimes go to a different area and say, "What's trash? What can I donate?" .. and sure enough ... some stuff leaves the house and I see a bare spot on a shelf or floor! (And I am not allowed to put anything else there! ha! I like the empty spots!) I'm not finished, but I feel good about the process and can keep doing a little all the time.
I just recently found you, Dana, by going down the rabbit hole of UA-cam videos as I began my journey of minimizing my house. Your 5-step technique of decluttering works for me. The idea of not using a keep box is revolutionary to this professional procrastinator. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
Me, too...Dana K. White, where have you been all my life? I grew up in a mom and grandmom hoarding environment, so I inherited the hoarder gene. I collect yarn, books, and kitchen stuff and have paths from front door to hallway to bathroom/bedroom suite and from hallway to my rocker recliner, i.e., the main walkways. My husband and I have way too many clothes, a lot of which are too small, but I need help going through the boxes of clean clothes to weed out donatable items. Then I have to get rid of all the too-small clothes in my dresser drawers. But, I have to declutter the bags abd boxes in front of and along side of my bed. Oh, I don't sleep in the bed; I sleep in by chair in the living room. There's so much dust in the debroom that I have to wear a mask just to be in there since I am allergic to dust, yeasts, and molds.
I‘m in love! I tended to get so overwhelmed with kon Marie and such since you always have to dump everything out and make a huge mess first. And sure some people will work through it to get there home back. But I can just live with it and get reminded everyday what a failure I‘m. Your method is sooo much better! And I love that I get some exercise through it as well ❤ Thank you so much for sharing your journey, your learnings and reminding us again and again how we can make our home better without making it worse first
Just watching you go through this with an actual process inspires me to put that process into use for one of the multiple spots in my home tonight. Thank you.
Acting on the decision has really helped me protect the work I’ve already done and get rid of the last 10 percent that always kept my house from looking the way I want.
I LOVE this. I end up going as far as dividing into various boxes and then I have random boxes all over the place and don’t know what’s in them. I end up buying what I need when I need it when there is probably some in a random spot in my house. I think this is definitely the method for me.
Thank you for making this process so simple that it is easy to follow. I love that you are making videos again, it really helps this “visual” learner. 😁 Please keep making videos. Blessings!
The bonus to the “put it where it belongs right now “ method is that every item you put away is time saved from having to search the entire house for it later! Also, less arguments about who used the items last and what did they do with them. So much less stress in your home that cannot be measured but is priceless!!!
I really like your method! My favorite part is the take it there now. In the past, I would put those items in a pile to deal with at the end. The problem was, I was mentally "done" at the end and didn't want to mess with putting it all away. You're a genius! :)
Progress and only progress no matter how long you have to declutter. That's what I love about your method! And how you're always keeping it real. I've got a German Shepherd-Border Collie mix. Dog hair everywhere!
Dana, I am so glad I found the video where my other mentors were telling us about the course we can buy made by the three of you. Since I was not familiar with you yet I checked your videos out at their urging and found out you and I are alike in sooo many ways! I am of course a new subscriber! I am going to look into buying both your books and I am feeling like I may even purchase the course because it may just be the very tool I need to tackle my cluttered LIFE! I love the way you clean without making a bigger mess! I am pretty sure that I don't start a lot of times because I can't get started and run out of time, energy or both, to complete my task so I don't start. Then it stays that way "YELLING" at me to get it done. Honestly I am being converted by these wonderful videos on youtube that are so helpful in my recovery. I count you as friend, Dana, THANK YOU!
I love the way you work. I love that you use the container method. I love the way you do thrash, then easy stuff. I have only watched half of this video, but I'm all in on your method. I did my clothes closet trying to use your container and hanger method. I ran into a slight problem when I kept finding more hangers. But my closet makes me happy. And I swear that I will not buy any more hangers. Please take this as a huge thank you. You are very much appreciated!
You have the hands-down best decluttering method. I wish all the other decluttering gurus, many of whom I enjoy, would adopt your “take it there now philosophy.”
I was just doing that type of cleaning before I started this video. My ADHD brain enjoys the slight change, and I remind myself movement is good. Thank you for this vid!!
I am at the stage where I am just picking up and putting things away all the time. I just take an item that is in the wrong place an hold it until I put it in its home. I can even get distracted and do other things but I make it uncomfortable by holding on to the item.
I love watching / listening to your videos while I do a pick up or declutter. Your books have changed my life and even my toddler is getting in on the act. Thank you so much.
I am just recovered from two years of Cancer treatments where I have done nothing for two years. Now I have started trying to declutter house and I find myself just starting and tearing things apart and making a big mess all over. Everything has to be dusted and washed even before I give it away. I am making baby steps thanks to your channel
Thank you so much for sharing this video with us! My house is filled with containers like these and you know what they are from? KEEP BOXES from previous decluttering projects I have done that I never got a chance to put away because I got distracted!!
Little places are so hard to clean out, but you made it look easier (and more fun!) !! I love how you call them “doo-lollies” instead of “thingies”!! A lot cuter!! 💕 Thanks so much!!
I finally cleared out the random basket in my laundry that has been there for months and seemed too much for me to face! Putting it in the bin, away or donate immediately really helped me. Thanks 😁
I do a container or drawer etc a day. Or even a couple and my house feels fresher. Makes me feel happy every time I open the drawers to these spots but what makes me feel even happier is that I know for sure that I'll be able to maintain it a lot better in the long run rather than everything going back to how it was 6 months to a year later.
For me, I have found making little piles as I declutter the little container, ie, to go to the kitchen, to go to the bathroom cabinets, to go to my closet, etc. then, after I empty my bin, I put all my piles of thingies where they belong instead of ping ponging all over the house. It’s just faster that way for me :). I love your videos!
Thank you. While recovering from a chrushing foot injury.Ive been watching you. Since watching the bathroom drawer bit, I decluttered mine last week. After hopping to the garage for the first time in 5 months. Im grateful for my 15 year old boy laundry work. However, seeing many coins stuck in the bottom of the washer, I freaked.. Went looking for tools ..which I found in the clean bathroom drawer. You are a godsend. May your life be uncluttered.
Thank you so much, I tried this and it worked. My kitchen table was always a catch all on one end. I got rid of everything in an hour, put away right away, throw, etc. This really worked, you are magic.
If I'm doing a larger area, I can't look so easily to see if there are other items that go in the space of the item I have in my hand. I just use a box and at the end of the project I take the box around and do it then. But I know what your'e saying....... if I just do it as I go, then I don't have a box of items that belong in other rooms just sitting around if I don't finish in one go. My house is three levels and I have RA so I just do what works best. These vids are helping me so much! I have thought about the course, but that is a lot right now while buying summer camp items, etc.
“I’m not THAT poor.” This is what I tell myself when telling myself to throw away throngs like hairy brads, bent pins, stretched out hair ties and other less than perfect, yet maybe still useful things.
I enjoy these videos best. I love hearing the reasoning behind your decisions, and that helps me in my own decluttering. I don't use your method, per se, but I still find these "talk through the process" videos very helpful....and motivating.
Girl, you think just like me. It is so refreshing that to find help decluttering from you and the Minimal Mom. However, I am so overwhelmed with stuff that I quit again. My family is pressuring me. I need to get back to watching more of your videos.
Girl, I have never met anyone who thinks like I do but you are my kindred spirit! I'm reading your book and am the same about time unawareness as well as things like the broccoli on the floor that the dog didn't want (from How to manage you home without using your mind). I call it visual white noise. If someone points it out, I can see it, otherwise it's just background hum.
I super appreciate this method! When time and space allow, going marie condo on an area is great!! But sometimes (most times) my life doesn't allow for that!! Thank you!!
I really appreciate your videos. You’re helping me loads. I bought your book on Amazon. Someone on a Facebook hoarding (collecting) group recommended your book :) you’re amazing. THANK YOU 💘🌈🥰
I love your process. I do this (test the remote right now) just to be done with things and deal with them right away. It’s an awesome process. And I love that there’s no mess to be dealt with afterwards

Oh, and I have more dog hair than I ever thought possible, so I feel you in that concern!
If it's his mess, why are you cleaning it?
@@kell_checks_in because it's my car and driving me CRAZY! 😂🤣😂
Atta girl, Lynn!❤👊
So glad you're back! LOVE your videos & have missed you not posting for years! PLEASE continue to post. Your content is great!
Her podcast is a slob comes clean. You may enjoy it. I LOVE it!
@@jesseb5112 yes!!! Love it too!
We are finding so many of these since we've moved so many times there's always a few of the random stuff items that we should have just chucked in the garbage, but instead we gave them a cross country adventure in our moving trucks, lol
🤪
So many gems in this
9:29 "It's BeTtEr."
"Let me save this for another time when I'm testing remotes."
"I'm down to just a few pieces of hairy money."
😆😂 This is the best method! Thanks Dana.
Your comment that each thing done is progress has helped me so much. Thank you! At 74, progress isn't as fast as it used to be!
Hang in there, Terry!❤
I always enjoy your videos and your sense of humor!! Your decluttering videos make so much sense to me!!
Love your “Editor” he has your sense of humor 🙂
I'm loving the meta-communication with your son/videographer/editor! Thanks for another delightful and helpful video :)
I‘m in love! I tended to get so overwhelmed with kon Marie and such since you always have to dump everything out and make a huge mess first. And sure some people will work through it to get there home back. But I can just live with it and get reminded everyday what a failure I‘m. Your method is sooo much better! And I love that I get some exercise through it as well ❤ Thank you so much for sharing your journey, your learnings and reminding us again and again how we can make our home better without making it worse first
If it were me- - I would toss or donate the white bowl so there is no chance it could collect clutter again!
But it's a useful bowl!! Oh... wait...
no joke, right? and yet...
Just watching you go through this with an actual process inspires me to put that process into use for one of the multiple spots in my home tonight. Thank you.
I decluttered my coffee table basket while I watched! Thanks for the inspiration :)
There are others in the world like me. Oh thank God! Loved this video. With every object she explained how she felt.
I just find Dana’s voice so relaxing 😌
"There we go. All the hairy brads - sorry, if your name is Brad!"
🤣🙃 Dana, you are *HILARIOUS!*
My husband's name is Brad. And he is kind of hairy. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I HAD to laugh 🤣 at that part too!
That comment alone would have me subscribing if I was not already a subscriber. Thanks for the laugh.
I was just doing that type of cleaning before I started this video. My ADHD brain enjoys the slight change, and I remind myself movement is good. Thank you for this vid!!
Wow, that was a great walkthrough on decluttering those items. Really helpful. Thank you for sharing!
When cleaning my house, found money is my tip.🙂 To the laborer goes the wages!
Love the scripture wall hanging in the background 🥰
Thank you so much for sharing this video with us! My house is filled with containers like these and you know what they are from? KEEP BOXES from previous decluttering projects I have done that I never got a chance to put away because I got distracted!!
You are by far one of my favorites. You make me smile every time I watch one of your videos. Great inspiration!
I love the idea that even a little bit better is still better!!! 💖💫
Thanks 😁
Just used this concept yesterday with my oldest boy, for his pots of collections in his room! Explained the container concept to him.
This was small but effective Dana, thank you. I sorted a little basket and bag that had been sitting for ages while watching you 👏👏👏
Success does not have to mean finished. Success means to have done something. Thank you!
Dana you are so funny I love your sense of humor and good advice. Thank you .LK 😁❤🙏
This method makes so much sense.
I really like this method of decluttering. It doesn’t get overwhelming.
Putting things away in there homes does add 'steps' to your day so that's a win. Love this vid
“I’m not THAT poor.”
This is what I tell myself when telling myself to throw away throngs like hairy brads, bent pins, stretched out hair ties and other less than perfect, yet maybe still useful things.
I wish I could use more thumbs up for your videos lol I love every single one of them
LOL. Priceless and life-saving!! xoxoxo thank you!
Great demo on a small scale and you're so funny 😆
Maybe this is why, in feng shui, they say empty containers are bad! Because they collect stuff!
I love you because of the way you reacted to your own decision to throw away the brads.
The best part of taking things to their home “right now” is getting to your 10,000 steps easier!
You have many good ideas. Please don't keep repeating yourself. You time and our time us precious.
Good job! You motivated me to clean out the kitchen junk drawer!
Superb instructional lesson 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I super appreciate this method! When time and space allow, going marie condo on an area is great!! But sometimes (most times) my life doesn't allow for that!! Thank you!!
I really appreciate your videos. You’re helping me loads. I bought your book on Amazon. Someone on a Facebook hoarding (collecting) group recommended your book :) you’re amazing. THANK YOU 💘🌈🥰
Your humor is everything 🥰🥰
I love your process. I do this (test the remote right now) just to be done with things and deal with them right away. It’s an awesome process. And I love that there’s no mess to be dealt with afterwards
Thank you! This is so simple yet so powerful!
