Jen Taylor’s performance in this episode always sends chills down my spine. “But that wouldn’t be fair now, would it?” Salem just last episode “That’s not fair!” I’m sensing a trend. Also, I love that moment we get after Salem’s “I’m the only one who can get you what you want” speech. She just closes her eyes, sighs and says “And so we must press on.” It’s so subtle but she just looks so resigned and tired. Like, she has no choice in her mind but just to… keep going. It’s a small almost humanizing moment especially after episode 3.
I like how Salem chooses to punish Hazel by restricting his breathing since he can just turn off his pain receptors and his auras healing factor is so potent that any other way would be pointless.
When someone panics they tend to hyperventilate and by restricting their breathing it makes them panic even more causing them to hyperventilate more which can cause them to faint. She knew that she couldn't physically harm him so her doing that was quite smart. So what she did can be just as fearful, dreadful and mentally scarring as being physically beaten.
@@jimfox1477Emerald wasn’t exactly giving anything up, least of all her beloved Cinder. They all knew the answer, it was just a matter of Emerald having to weigh in an argument against Cinder. It cost her nothing to admit that, and might’ve even saved her from potential punishment. I wouldn’t exactly say that Salem “broke” Emerald, but I get what you’re saying.
I love Salem as a villain. Especially in this episode you know she’s evil but she never raises her voice so it ends up just sounding like she’s lecturing children
@@WingManFang1as much as I vouch for mercury. He does, and rightfully so, make her question his security. Not because he's wrong on her end, but cause he kinda has a point where he's coming from on his end.
Seeing everyone's reactions, I find it hard to argue with Oz. He really had good reason to keep secrets. Keeping secrets isn't very nice, but sometimes it is the less harmful option. Added note, notice how Mercury is the first to notice Salem's rage, and is the first out of the room? Considering his dad, he's likely seen this behavior before.
Oz is not very smart. He knows that he is clueless in dealing with Salem, and the best course in that situation is to share the difficulties with plenty of smart people so that they can use their creativity to brainstorm new strategies, but he keeps them in the dark so that he gets no real help. He told Leo only enough for Salem to easily manipulate him, and Ironwood had enough doubts to seize control of the security of the Vytal festival away from him.
@@jeffreysmith236 Again, considering how hopeless everyone becomes on finding out Salem is immortal, it makes sense not to tell them. The downside is it leads to people being stupid and going directly at Salem despite Oz telling them not to. All the people agreeing with the team seem to think that just laying down and giving up would have been the optimal solution. Just let the Grimm kill everyone. That's pretty much what the song Sacrifice is about. You bring up Ironwood, but I'm sure you know what happens when he finds out that Salem is immortal.
@@Kaylakaze Ozpin kept everyone in the dark, James suspected it. Keeping the secret is stupid and gives Salem power. Ozpin should have told his people his way and on his schedule. The real demoralization occurs when it becomes clear That Ozpin thinks so little of them, it was betrayal of Ozpin on his subordinates. It ought to have been part of the curriculum at the academy, Oobleck should have taught it. And Sacrifice is about Raven and her feeling of betrayal by Ozpin, different people take it differently, cowards apparently the worst. And who says lay down and give up? That is foolish and shortsighted. Fighting the Grimm is forever, always has been, nothing new.
@@jeffreysmith236 Except none of what you said is canon and the canon explanation is that everyone gives up when they learn Salem can't be killed, as shown here. The VERY CLEAR AND PLAIN fact is that Oz NEVER sent anyone after Salem and EXPLICITLY tells everyone to leave her alone and to only thwart her plans via her subordinates. Nothing that they have learned changes that, yet everyone's acting like they haven't been doing anything to protect the people all this time.
I could be giving a little too much credit but I do believe Oz doesn’t have a plan because his last one involved him being a headmaster at Beacon. So it isn’t that he’s never had one. He just currently doesn’t. Also I find it a bit sad Oz feared telling the truth because it made people betray him and upon them finding out, Qrow immediately assaults him after his fears were dragged into the open.
His only real long term plan is guiding humanity to be better, so they can meet the gods expectations should the Relics ever be brought together. Which is an insanely difficult thing to do. Beating Salem was never an option, but slowing her down and interrupting her attempts to divide humanity further is all he could really do.

it is rough for Qrow. Think how long he has been working for Oz under the premise that he was making the world a better place, when the reality was that he was just keeping the status quo. How many friends he has lost in this war, he even turned his back on his sister and tribe for Ozpin's mission. Finding out something you have suffered sacrifices and spent most of your life working for was a lie, that will screw with anybody let alone somebody like Qrow whose semblance ensures he is forever depressed.
So what does Qrow think he should have done (since you're speaking for him, apparently)? Just NOT fight and let everyone be slaughtered? He wasn't fighting for a lie. Salem's immortality has absolute zero bearing on what he has done to protect the people.

Summer died believing in Ozpin's lie. She deserved the truth. She isn't the only one. How many people died in ignorance? Ozpin deceived them out of his own convenience. It is easy to judge somebody when you aren't involved and sitting behind a computer screen physically and emotionally detached from the situation.

@@LunarValkyria "Lying by omission" is, by definition, not a lie. It's just something whiny people call it when they don't get everything they want. And I already commented on the SR situation. Just like Pyrrha, though, she was arrogant and defied a direct order, thinking she was all that, and paid the price for it. True, maybe she wouldn't have done it if she knew, but that's not an excuse to run off half-cocked because you think you're unstoppable. They're not military, but they put themselves under Ozpin's command when they joined up with him. If he says "don't go after Salem" they should at least realize he has a good reason for saying that.
When they attacked the Brothers, the B.o.D. said HE gave them magic. And then, when they B.o.L. looked down, I think he knew EXACTLY what he was going to do and didn't stop him. I think ghat was a predetermined decision: Dark told Light he was going to give them power, and, warned him as to what he we old do if they aimed it at THEM.
From their actions its very clear they respect each others choices and decisions despite their completely opposite dispositions. As it is the balance. They are technically one being in two. So they probably don't give warnings or heads up. When they created man they just kind of battled it out until they had a consensus.
I don’t think Ozpin told Qrow and Raven everything. They knew about the relics and the fact that Salem wants them. They knew that Salem has lived just as long as Oz, but I don’t think he told them the details behind it. They were led to believe Ozpin had a plan in mind. I think Raven just became too overwhelmed with the idea of Salem being so powerful. She thought Salem couldn’t be beaten, so she left the fight. This was the first time Qrow had heard everything Ozpin had kept hidden.
I think Raven knew Salem was unstoppable. Just my personal belief, but I think Raven accompanied Summer on her final mission and saw what happened to her. I don't think she was assigned that mission by Oz, she just took it upon herself to go without Summer knowing she was being followed. At least, at first. Either Raven abandoned Summer once it became hopeless, or Summer never knew she was being followed and Raven left her to her fate. I also think that is a secret Raven has not let anyone know, and why she left the team. Due to her semblance, Raven can escape almost instantly. She, far more than Qrow, makes a better scout or exit strategy. Raven knew that there was no stopping Salem. Again, that is all just theory, but it fits with the little bit we do know of Summer's disappearance.
Oz did not tell Anyone everything. Including his lieutenants, the other headmasters, the whole story. Lest he loose supporters who thought they were fighting the good fight. Same with Salem. She did not tell any of her minions the whole story either, as well as her goals. Otherwise she'd loose supporters as well, who thought they would get a piece of her new world. Raven is a wild card. She is apparently privy to a lot more background information on OZ and the world than most people are. At least up to this point.
My understanding is that Ozpin told Qrow exactly what he told RWBY. They just received info at different times. They're both have the same knowledge base. It's just the bare minimum and whatever is relevant at the time.
Long comment incoming... It seems implied in Raven's talk with Yang and Weiss back in V5x6 that Raven may had already learned most, if not all of Oz's secrets involving Him, Salem, and the world on her own. Knowing more than even the headmasters and the rest of team STRQ. (Of course now RWBY+Q are caught up.) It could be one of the reasons why she skipped out on STRQ. Once she learned what really is going on with Oz's involvement in the state of the world. Salem's die-hard status. And so on. Like she said to Qrow in V5x11, when Qrow said 'We can beat Salem'. To which she replied "You have no idea what your dealing with. There is no beating Salem." I had a theory that Raven somehow gained access to the lamp early on and asked that one question that was already used up by the time Ruby got a hold of it. Asking Jinn probably the same question Ruby asked, "What is Ozpin hiding". And what she learned scared her. Not sure when this would have occurred, but I'm thinking it was after she had Yang, But before she ran away, as well as becoming a maiden. Maybe Oz had the Lamp out of the vault briefly. Which may be how the previous spring maiden came into play. And during that time, Raven gained access to it to ask the question. Like she said. Oz told team STRQ (some) of his secrets. But Raven wanted to know more. 'And with each new discovery she made, the more horrifying the world became'. I think Raven learned too much and just wanted to get herself and tribe as far away from that stuff as possible. Till of course through the efforts of Qrow and Yang, it was brought right back to her doorstep. All speculation of course. But it kinda fits..
I think what made Oz keept going was simply preventing Salem. Remember, when all relics are together, teh gods will come back and judge the world, potentially destroying it if we are not united. Salem getting all relics will summon the gods, and since humanity is still very much so divided (specially with her help) the world will be destroyed, and potentially, she dies in the proccess (what she wants).
Recall back in Vol2 when they were deciding how to investigate Mountain Glenn to find the White Fang Hideout. *Ironwood:* If you mean that your plan is to merely _hold the defenses and wait._ *Ozpin:* _It is _*_not!_* Oz got _kinda_ snappy there, almost out of character for him to be so reactive like that. And, as it turns out, that's *precisely* what his plan is... just on the much _broader_ gameboard.
Ultimately if you remember, the Brother God of Creation foretold that they would return one day to judge mankind once more. if they continue to fight amongst themselves and prove to be irredeemable as a species, mankind will cease to exist altogether. Ozpin knows the only way to achieve this, is to forge bonds between man and faunus. The problem though, is that Salem has wedged a very strong gap not only between the species but the nations as well, because she wants to end everything. So Ozpin is met with an impossible task because of Salem, on top of the fact she can not be killed and reasoning with her will be next to impossible, he worries that mankind has met its final days. It can be hard to come up with a plan when the key instigator is Salem and she is a hurdle no one can seem to overcome so far.
I’ve been watching your guys’ rwby reactions for a while and can I just say that I love the way Bethany puts into perspective everything when she’s analyzing the episode at the end 😊 There are things that are so easy to understand when watching an episode but compared to how she puts everything, it seems so surface level now so I just appreciate her input on this
I have to wonder about Salem sometimes. She _cannot die._ She has power _no one else has._ She commands the worst _scourge_ on the planet, like their entire species is just an extension of her will. If she hates everyone and everything SO MUCH, and wants the world itself destroyed... what's stopping her from just _waging an immortal war on mankind?_ From scouring every inch of the world, piece by piece with her seemingly endless hordes? What's ANYONE gonna do about it? Stop her? _Kill_ her? Yeah right.
She doesn't hate humans, she just doesn't care in the slightest. And she will not allow them to obstruct her plans since they are mostly an inconvenience except for the few she finds useful. And she needs something to occupy her endless existence.
Her forces aren’t limit less. You’ve seen the pools of annihilation are mostly puddles of annihilation now… but aside from that , that is EXACTLY what she has been doing this whole time. 😅

the problem is, waging an immortal war on mankind isn't going to break her curse, something she's wanted from the start. The only way she can see it finally happen is the Brothers deeming man irredeemable and destroying Remnant permanently, harkening to their statement to her, 'so long as this world turns, you shall walk it's face'. Wiping out humanity is not her goal, after all, man can't be found irredeemable if they've been made extinct all over again, it's to divide humanity as much as possible to ensure they completely fail to meet the Brothers (frankly ridiculously high) expectations while she finds and collects the relics from wherever Oz hides them in order to summon them back and finally end her curse
Ok so here’s something to think about. We saw that Salem didn’t have those red cracks on her body in the flashback but we’ve also seen she does now. We also know Summer and possibly Raven went on a mission to which Summer never came back and Raven seems to be scarred for life from that mission onward. Last thing we know is that Silver Eyes have some form of effect on Grimm and Salem is kinda part Grimm from falling into the pool to try to unalive herself but backfired. Wonder if those two things are connected.
I love the variety in Salem's minions, everyone fulfils a different cliché. "I want revenge and you can help me get it" - Hazel "I'm loyal to the person that saved me (Cinder), shame she's loyal to Salem" - Emerald "I'm good at doing bad things and you want someone who can do bad things" - Mercury "I'm just literally insane and want to watch the world burn" - Tyrion
You guys talking about 'what they fed their wolves' in regards to Salem and Oz is so interesting because on the one hand you're so close to reading them perfectly but on the other hand you've kind of missed a key bit which is that Salem, for all she's powered by spite and ego is actually VERY clever in her vindictiveness whereas Oz... He *mostly* 'fed his wolf' on love and kindness, but he also fed it on fear and pain as well: Hence all the lies (because he's scared people will hate him/give up on 'the mission to protect' without a clear end goal) and the fact he DOES put himself up on a pedestal (its clearly not as intentional as Salem's but notice how he always tries to frame himself as the 'age wisened mentor' and when he's 'explaining' things he always has his backup like Qrow or Glynda there to say all the uncomfortable bits before he comes in with the 'reasonable' sounding final blow? Yeah). ...Which is why Qrow didn't know shit alas. Oz clearly adores Qrow (and if the 'magic gift = adoption' theory is right then he probably adored Raven every bit as much) but like. He still recruited them from school age to be his 'eyes' (aka bird spies) and told them 'hey I'm this very important immortal hero facing down the leader of the Grimm called Salem' without, you know, telling them that Salem is unkillable and well. Raven apparently found out the hard way and in terror/refusal to acknowledge her terror blamed Oz and 'went back to old habits' about the lies since her 'good' parental figure couldn't be trusted, while Qrow literally was so faithful and trusting of Oz that he questioned nothing and sided with Oz against his literal twin sister. So. Given this reveal happened while Qrow is probably still feeling the pain of finally cutting all ties with Raven due to 'Oz's war', the terror of having his nieces and their friends completely wrapped up in everything, and not too long after finding out dozens of his old huntsman buddies were off screen murdered because of a secret war they knew nothing about, the reveal that Oz has been lying to his face for *decades* kinda resulted in a kaboom (which was also made bigger due to Qrow's massive self loathing issues now having every reason to resurface because well, the person who probably helped Qrow most with them just turned out to be a massive F%#king liar). Honestly I sympathise with Oz a ton here too; he's scared and has been making a lot of very terrible decisions (the moment Salem managed to get into his head and convince him that no one would stay with him if they knew the truth was the second she won) but like. Given how often and horribly he's probably died to those he once trusted, Salem actively hurting him, the sheer despair he must've felt from the moment he found out Salem was unkillible... Ahh dear. It's a glorious mess isn't it? XD Love that you can tell Oz isn't 'the villain' here though; he might've eventually ended up that way if he hadn't been exposed (thank you again Oscar for calling the old man out XD) but like, now he gets to see how Teams RWBY and JNPR fare when facing the idea everything they've done is pointless and doomed and well. He really needs that fresh perspective I think
Pardon my french...but i fucking love Salem...Paladins did a crossover patch that incorporated RWBY Characters into their Game, and I have the Salem Skin for my favorite Support Healer, Seris.

I love how much this reveal recontextualizes things that happened earlier in the show. It makes you wonder: did Raven find out the truth about Salem on her own and that's why she turned on Ozpin? probably. Was he gonna fill Pyrrha in on everything or leave her in the dark even though being a maiden would have put a huge target on her back? Either way not telling her all this BEFORE she makes a life altering decision is icky. And i love how it makes perfect sense and is totally understandable WHY Oz doesn't tell anybody about this, but it still doesn't take away from it being a selfish choice that people have a right to be mad over. There's no real "bad guy" here which is why the FNDM still has debates about it to this day. I'm team "people should make informed decisions about whether or not to Fight the Good Fight" but i still don't think Ozpin is a bad person for his choices.
- Qrow (and presumably the rest of Team STRQ) was aware that Salem is 'immortal' at least in that age has no hold on her. but Grimm are 'immortal' too, that isn't the same as unkillable. Actually, judging by the end of that first Ozma/Salem battle (where their kids died), it looks like Salem was 'killed' only to reform. - Tyrian continues to make Joker look relatively well adjusted. 😶 - Note that just after he says "Cinder isn't here to protect you anymore." he _deliberately_ rubs his cheek against Emerald's blade and cuts his own face. 😖 - the reasons Salem gave are the motivations of her followers. Hazel by love of his sister, Tyrian by reverence for Salem as his goddess, Watts by revenge for a slighted ego, Cinder by desire for power.
Ozma’s life has been thousands of years of someone putting a glass of water in front of him and saying, “turn this into wine or everyone dies.” He was never going to get better at it, there was never a plan to be made, all he could do is keep showing people the glass of water and seeing if they could do it.
Yang and Qrow messed up big time....Yang mental Bully while Qrow lashed out too much....yes the secret was huge but who would have handled that truth that easily?.....too make matters worse.....nobody tried to understand a burden of a guy who lives...over and over again.....as For Ms. Calavera..1 tough granny
A great setup episode for the rest of the volume, and really the next few volumes. Love the Ruby love, she is amazing, we all know it and see it. Qrow's brutal line, for a man whose whole life has been bad luck, to be the worst of it is... well... indescribable. Volume 3, Qrow always had Ozpin's back, always chastised Ironwood. Was always away on another mission for him. If you disappoint your most loyal follower, someone you essentially guided through adulthood, that's gonna make you want to run away. But that speaks to his good, that he can disappoint himself too. Because Salem would never blame herself. It's always others at fault, and she designs it to be that way. Excited!!!
I mean I know how it looks and it sucks he wasn’t completely honest but for somebody like oz who has lived for as long as he has u 100% understand why he withheld information
18:00, no, that's Cynder. Salem we saw, was the duaghter of Royalty and then she became totally dependent on Ozma because he WAS the only thing in her world. Then that was taken from her and the Brothers REFUSED, not that they couldn't, refused to bring him back.
The Brothers weren’t wrong in that regard, Salem was. Ozma dying of natural causes was regrettable, but again, a natural if unfortunate part of life. They were under no obligations to bring him back to life, and Salem had no right to demand such of them.
I think Oz has been at a stalemate with Salem for a long time and he knows how to maintain that. But he doesn't know how to defeat her. The god of darkness wiped out humanity because they followed Salem and attacked. It wasn't just about teaching her a lesson. It's only really Tyrian who worships Salem. It has nothing to do with her "need" for affirmation and everything to do with how chaotic-evil he is. The others are respectful because Salem is so powerful.
In ozpin defense he was betrayed a lot when he told secret to other's and i understand why they are mad because salem is immortal and can't be killed but he should had a better plan
I felt so bad for Oz by this point and the team's reaction initially surprised me, but one has to remember they've lost friends & classmates in this war already, and Yang lost an arm. Even Qrow despairs that all his efforts have been in vain. Like Ozpin already said: "It's all my fault. I've made more mistakes than every man, woman and child on this planet."
Some of your best post-chapter thoughts of the series so far, Ken & Beth!! Especially looking to Salem and her actions. Jen Taylor, her VA, really gave us some true depth of Salem's character. And how she sees the world and their place in it. Big hand to Maria...... Keeping this really shooked crew grounded and back to what's ahead. And ahead is...... Well....... Probably only option Oz ever considered was uniting humanity and then calling gods back to judge them. Not sure how much weight as human does Salem have though.
There is the phrase "Fake it til you make it". I don't think Ospin didn't have a plan before. In fact I think he had several. The problem lies with the question of "killing" an immortal - that being an impossibillity in and of itself. If you deal with that problem for long enough, you might end up over focusing on one aspect of it - "killing" Salem in this case - and ignorant other options. And i think that is Ospin's problem. He is simply overloocking his other options. Speeking of those: there is actually a lot of limitations on permanently defeeting Salem. There is summoning the gods and asking them for help. Problem is that they would "judje" humanity and human kind is very much devided. Ospin's current solution seems to be to simply stall for time and to keep the reliks hidden. (Good plan if there's a time limit, but there isn't...) You could imprison Salem, some might sugest. I'd agree that that's a good idea but where do you put her? She's essencially the greatest distructive force after the god of darkness so a normal prison cell of any variaty is only gonna hold for so long. Shootingstar her into the sun? Dust based engins can't reach space as their residual "magic" (if you can call it that) is ancered to the planet (acording to the lore). Long story short: critisysing Ospin for not having a plan is shortsightednes. I meen, World you habe had a better idea?
You about to get into the 90s childhood videogame trauma arc and its so good and also so recreshing even to me cause i said "WHOO" at the moment despite mild spoilment in advance like three years ago cause its actually fucking terrifying regardless, potential childhood trauma just adds on just ask me. Also yeah Yang acted completely in character and it super checks out because shes been kind of fucked over from all parties since birth. After all shes been through and asking Ozpin personally to promise that, whether he actually agrred to it or not, for someone who has lived nothing but lies and half truths that has to be fucking infuriating. Especially after you turn down your own mother thrice in a row who despite being a very hot fem Vergil enthusiast, turns out to be right in all her warnings on why following Ozpin is a death sentence. It makes you second guess everything on how hes constructed how he acts and if Raven betrayed him purely out of cowardice or if she betrayed him as a way to try and prolong the inevitable of her own daughter replacing her just to die sooner or later. A lot of this brings into question of some people were bad and yeah. Quite a few were. Raven is pretty bad in many ways i wont lie but that last talk with Yang in V5 is one of its most actual well written genuine moments and it feels like it cause Yang doesnt even realize she gave up her last known shot to know and understand her mom until way after its too late and breaks down crying. Imagine all that fighting, wasted recovery arc, and suddenly a few warnings your deadbeat hot Vergil mom tells you about ozpin are not only true but turns out hes left you in the dark a lot. Yeah if anything Yang is or should be so emotionally derailed at this point im surprised she never had an opportunity at the protagonist role but im more surprised shes kept it together in general as long as she has.
This Episode, right here, is where Ruby's slide begins---that doesn't end until the horrible mess of mid-Vol.9. Now we'll be lucky if we ever get to see the end of it all.
If you revisit the recent events. Oz used questions before sealing the lamp but lamp reset meanwhile cuz it was so long. But it had 1 question used. And Raven kept saying stuff like “impossible war agains Salem” and “there is no beating Salem” and such and she ran away. So did the previous spring maiden that had access to the relic and also Leo who was in charge of the maiden and the school holding the relic. So it is quite possible these guys used the lamp and they knew and thats why they left Oz. While Qrow followed and so did the team Rwby. Maybe this is gonna end up being a big plot hole but with how many lives Ospin has lived u would think that hes hade plenty of opportunitys to ask the Jinn questions that could help him. The questions we se him ask. Where are the other artifacts, Whats there power and How can i defeat Salem are very good questions to ask the first time u talk to the Jinn. But your telling me he never summoned the Jinn again after waiting 100 years to ask another set of questions. Its only 3 questions every 100 years but he must have hade that lantern for so long that hes been able to ask that Jinn many questions over hes many lifetimes. I would have been so pissed if i was Ruby knowing that he hade the key to pretty mutch infinite knowledge over 100´s of years and he only bottered to ask 3 questions.
The history of Oz indicates he was attempting to unify the world peacefully with the games and a unifying training system. That went to pieces so he's waiting for a better solution. Salem just desires an end to it all by recalling the gods in the middle of chaos. I suspect the gods are effecting an experimental program with the human psyche by arranging this "Devil" situation. It doesn't make much sense to me that this is all the result of arbitrary capriciousness.
I don't understand why they all reacted like this, yeah, Ozma can't destroy Salem, she's immortal... The gods said that he needs to use the relics to summon them, not destroy her. Destroying her was never the main goal to begin with. So their mission remains the same. Get the rest of the relics, summon the gods, and humanity would be judged. The fact that they got all mad at Ozma for that is weird and kind of poor writing.
Jen Taylor’s performance in this episode always sends chills down my spine.
“But that wouldn’t be fair now, would it?” Salem just last episode “That’s not fair!” I’m sensing a trend.
Also, I love that moment we get after Salem’s “I’m the only one who can get you what you want” speech. She just closes her eyes, sighs and says “And so we must press on.” It’s so subtle but she just looks so resigned and tired. Like, she has no choice in her mind but just to… keep going. It’s a small almost humanizing moment especially after episode 3.
Jen Taylor took Salem up a couple notches this chapter. And her best is yet to come.
I like how Salem chooses to punish Hazel by restricting his breathing since he can just turn off his pain receptors and his auras healing factor is so potent that any other way would be pointless.
When someone panics they tend to hyperventilate and by restricting their breathing it makes them panic even more causing them to hyperventilate more which can cause them to faint. She knew that she couldn't physically harm him so her doing that was quite smart. So what she did can be just as fearful, dreadful and mentally scarring as being physically beaten.

@@jimfox1477Emerald wasn’t exactly giving anything up, least of all her beloved Cinder. They all knew the answer, it was just a matter of Emerald having to weigh in an argument against Cinder. It cost her nothing to admit that, and might’ve even saved her from potential punishment. I wouldn’t exactly say that Salem “broke” Emerald, but I get what you’re saying.
I love Salem as a villain. Especially in this episode you know she’s evil but she never raises her voice so it ends up just sounding like she’s lecturing children

I keep thinking on in this Emerald had two separate hands on her shoulder. Salem’s cold, threatening hand, then Hazel’s protective, comforting hand.
She also had Mercury when he backed her up at the entrance against Tyrian.
I definitely imagine Salem's touch feeling ice cold on Emerald's shoulder.
@@WingManFang1as much as I vouch for mercury. He does, and rightfully so, make her question his security. Not because he's wrong on her end, but cause he kinda has a point where he's coming from on his end.
Seeing everyone's reactions, I find it hard to argue with Oz. He really had good reason to keep secrets. Keeping secrets isn't very nice, but sometimes it is the less harmful option.
Added note, notice how Mercury is the first to notice Salem's rage, and is the first out of the room? Considering his dad, he's likely seen this behavior before.
Oz is not very smart. He knows that he is clueless in dealing with Salem, and the best course in that situation is to share the difficulties with plenty of smart people so that they can use their creativity to brainstorm new strategies, but he keeps them in the dark so that he gets no real help. He told Leo only enough for Salem to easily manipulate him, and Ironwood had enough doubts to seize control of the security of the Vytal festival away from him.

@@Kaylakaze Ozpin kept everyone in the dark, James suspected it. Keeping the secret is stupid and gives Salem power. Ozpin should have told his people his way and on his schedule. The real demoralization occurs when it becomes clear That Ozpin thinks so little of them, it was betrayal of Ozpin on his subordinates. It ought to have been part of the curriculum at the academy, Oobleck should have taught it. And Sacrifice is about Raven and her feeling of betrayal by Ozpin, different people take it differently, cowards apparently the worst. And who says lay down and give up? That is foolish and shortsighted. Fighting the Grimm is forever, always has been, nothing new.

The VERY CLEAR AND PLAIN fact is that Oz NEVER sent anyone after Salem and EXPLICITLY tells everyone to leave her alone and to only thwart her plans via her subordinates. Nothing that they have learned changes that, yet everyone's acting like they haven't been doing anything to protect the people all this time.
I could be giving a little too much credit but I do believe Oz doesn’t have a plan because his last one involved him being a headmaster at Beacon. So it isn’t that he’s never had one. He just currently doesn’t.
Also I find it a bit sad Oz feared telling the truth because it made people betray him and upon them finding out, Qrow immediately assaults him after his fears were dragged into the open.
His only real long term plan is guiding humanity to be better, so they can meet the gods expectations should the Relics ever be brought together. Which is an insanely difficult thing to do. Beating Salem was never an option, but slowing her down and interrupting her attempts to divide humanity further is all he could really do.

Your breakdown of Ruby, Oz and Salem was great
it is rough for Qrow. Think how long he has been working for Oz under the premise that he was making the world a better place, when the reality was that he was just keeping the status quo. How many friends he has lost in this war, he even turned his back on his sister and tribe for Ozpin's mission. Finding out something you have suffered sacrifices and spent most of your life working for was a lie, that will screw with anybody let alone somebody like Qrow whose semblance ensures he is forever depressed.
So what does Qrow think he should have done (since you're speaking for him, apparently)? Just NOT fight and let everyone be slaughtered? He wasn't fighting for a lie. Salem's immortality has absolute zero bearing on what he has done to protect the people.

Ozpin didn't lie unless he told her that Salem was mortal and that the plan was to kill her. It had nothing to do with "convenience," it was about protecting the world. They're not military, but they put themselves under Ozpin's command when they joined up with him. If he says "don't go after Salem" they should at least realize he has a good reason for saying that.

When they attacked the Brothers, the B.o.D. said HE gave them magic. And then, when they B.o.L. looked down, I think he knew EXACTLY what he was going to do and didn't stop him. I think ghat was a predetermined decision: Dark told Light he was going to give them power, and, warned him as to what he we old do if they aimed it at THEM.
From their actions its very clear they respect each others choices and decisions despite their completely opposite dispositions. As it is the balance. They are technically one being in two. So they probably don't give warnings or heads up. When they created man they just kind of battled it out until they had a consensus.

I don’t think Ozpin told Qrow and Raven everything. They knew about the relics and the fact that Salem wants them. They knew that Salem has lived just as long as Oz, but I don’t think he told them the details behind it. They were led to believe Ozpin had a plan in mind. I think Raven just became too overwhelmed with the idea of Salem being so powerful. She thought Salem couldn’t be beaten, so she left the fight. This was the first time Qrow had heard everything Ozpin had kept hidden.
It seems Qrow had no idea about how the relic of knowledge worked, so Ozpin kept him in the dark about that.
I think Raven knew Salem was unstoppable. Just my personal belief, but I think Raven accompanied Summer on her final mission and saw what happened to her. I don't think she was assigned that mission by Oz, she just took it upon herself to go without Summer knowing she was being followed. At least, at first. Either Raven abandoned Summer once it became hopeless, or Summer never knew she was being followed and Raven left her to her fate. I also think that is a secret Raven has not let anyone know, and why she left the team. Due to her semblance, Raven can escape almost instantly. She, far more than Qrow, makes a better scout or exit strategy.
Raven knew that there was no stopping Salem.
Again, that is all just theory, but it fits with the little bit we do know of Summer's disappearance.
Oz did not tell Anyone everything. Including his lieutenants, the other headmasters, the whole story. Lest he loose supporters who thought they were fighting the good fight.
Same with Salem. She did not tell any of her minions the whole story either, as well as her goals. Otherwise she'd loose supporters as well, who thought they would get a piece of her new world.
Raven is a wild card. She is apparently privy to a lot more background information on OZ and the world than most people are. At least up to this point.
My understanding is that Ozpin told Qrow exactly what he told RWBY. They just received info at different times. They're both have the same knowledge base. It's just the bare minimum and whatever is relevant at the time.

It seems implied in Raven's talk with Yang and Weiss back in V5x6 that Raven may had already learned most, if not all of Oz's secrets involving Him, Salem, and the world on her own. Knowing more than even the headmasters and the rest of team STRQ. (Of course now RWBY+Q are caught up.)
It could be one of the reasons why she skipped out on STRQ. Once she learned what really is going on with Oz's involvement in the state of the world. Salem's die-hard status. And so on.
Like she said to Qrow in V5x11, when Qrow said 'We can beat Salem'. To which she replied "You have no idea what your dealing with. There is no beating Salem."
I had a theory that Raven somehow gained access to the lamp early on and asked that one question that was already used up by the time Ruby got a hold of it. Asking Jinn probably the same question Ruby asked, "What is Ozpin hiding". And what she learned scared her.
Not sure when this would have occurred, but I'm thinking it was after she had Yang, But before she ran away, as well as becoming a maiden. Maybe Oz had the Lamp out of the vault briefly. Which may be how the previous spring maiden came into play. And during that time, Raven gained access to it to ask the question.
Like she said. Oz told team STRQ (some) of his secrets. But Raven wanted to know more. 'And with each new discovery she made, the more horrifying the world became'.
I think Raven learned too much and just wanted to get herself and tribe as far away from that stuff as possible. Till of course through the efforts of Qrow and Yang, it was brought right back to her doorstep.
All speculation of course. But it kinda fits..
I think what made Oz keept going was simply preventing Salem. Remember, when all relics are together, teh gods will come back and judge the world, potentially destroying it if we are not united. Salem getting all relics will summon the gods, and since humanity is still very much so divided (specially with her help) the world will be destroyed, and potentially, she dies in the proccess (what she wants).
Anyone else notice that small moment of Vulnerability from Salem at 10.17. She had her back turned so the others couldnt see.
Recall back in Vol2 when they were deciding how to investigate Mountain Glenn to find the White Fang Hideout.
*Ironwood:* If you mean that your plan is to merely _hold the defenses and wait._
*Ozpin:* _It is _*_not!_*
Oz got _kinda_ snappy there, almost out of character for him to be so reactive like that. And, as it turns out, that's *precisely* what his plan is... just on the much _broader_ gameboard.
Ultimately if you remember, the Brother God of Creation foretold that they would return one day to judge mankind once more. if they continue to fight amongst themselves and prove to be irredeemable as a species, mankind will cease to exist altogether. Ozpin knows the only way to achieve this, is to forge bonds between man and faunus. The problem though, is that Salem has wedged a very strong gap not only between the species but the nations as well, because she wants to end everything.
So Ozpin is met with an impossible task because of Salem, on top of the fact she can not be killed and reasoning with her will be next to impossible, he worries that mankind has met its final days. It can be hard to come up with a plan when the key instigator is Salem and she is a hurdle no one can seem to overcome so far.
I’ve been watching your guys’ rwby reactions for a while and can I just say that I love the way Bethany puts into perspective everything when she’s analyzing the episode at the end 😊
There are things that are so easy to understand when watching an episode but compared to how she puts everything, it seems so surface level now so I just appreciate her input on this
I have to wonder about Salem sometimes. She _cannot die._ She has power _no one else has._ She commands the worst _scourge_ on the planet, like their entire species is just an extension of her will.
If she hates everyone and everything SO MUCH, and wants the world itself destroyed... what's stopping her from just _waging an immortal war on mankind?_ From scouring every inch of the world, piece by piece with her seemingly endless hordes? What's ANYONE gonna do about it? Stop her? _Kill_ her? Yeah right.
She doesn't hate humans, she just doesn't care in the slightest. And she will not allow them to obstruct her plans since they are mostly an inconvenience except for the few she finds useful. And she needs something to occupy her endless existence.

the problem is, waging an immortal war on mankind isn't going to break her curse, something she's wanted from the start. The only way she can see it finally happen is the Brothers deeming man irredeemable and destroying Remnant permanently, harkening to their statement to her, 'so long as this world turns, you shall walk it's face'. Wiping out humanity is not her goal, after all, man can't be found irredeemable if they've been made extinct all over again, it's to divide humanity as much as possible to ensure they completely fail to meet the Brothers (frankly ridiculously high) expectations while she finds and collects the relics from wherever Oz hides them in order to summon them back and finally end her curse
Yes Salem could so easily wipe out humanity, but her goal is to die. I don't think salem cares about humanity at this stage

Ok so here’s something to think about. We saw that Salem didn’t have those red cracks on her body in the flashback but we’ve also seen she does now. We also know Summer and possibly Raven went on a mission to which Summer never came back and Raven seems to be scarred for life from that mission onward. Last thing we know is that Silver Eyes have some form of effect on Grimm and Salem is kinda part Grimm from falling into the pool to try to unalive herself but backfired. Wonder if those two things are connected.

I'm not actually bothered by the revelations, because i agree with what was discussed last episode. Nobody said Salem can't be stopped.
With her insight into Ruby... she's not gonna be ready for Volume 9
You guys talking about 'what they fed their wolves' in regards to Salem and Oz is so interesting because on the one hand you're so close to reading them perfectly but on the other hand you've kind of missed a key bit which is that Salem, for all she's powered by spite and ego is actually VERY clever in her vindictiveness whereas Oz... He *mostly* 'fed his wolf' on love and kindness, but he also fed it on fear and pain as well: Hence all the lies (because he's scared people will hate him/give up on 'the mission to protect' without a clear end goal) and the fact he DOES put himself up on a pedestal (its clearly not as intentional as Salem's but notice how he always tries to frame himself as the 'age wisened mentor' and when he's 'explaining' things he always has his backup like Qrow or Glynda there to say all the uncomfortable bits before he comes in with the 'reasonable' sounding final blow? Yeah).
...Which is why Qrow didn't know shit alas. Oz clearly adores Qrow (and if the 'magic gift = adoption' theory is right then he probably adored Raven every bit as much) but like. He still recruited them from school age to be his 'eyes' (aka bird spies) and told them 'hey I'm this very important immortal hero facing down the leader of the Grimm called Salem' without, you know, telling them that Salem is unkillable and well. Raven apparently found out the hard way and in terror/refusal to acknowledge her terror blamed Oz and 'went back to old habits' about the lies since her 'good' parental figure couldn't be trusted, while Qrow literally was so faithful and trusting of Oz that he questioned nothing and sided with Oz against his literal twin sister.
So. Given this reveal happened while Qrow is probably still feeling the pain of finally cutting all ties with Raven due to 'Oz's war', the terror of having his nieces and their friends completely wrapped up in everything, and not too long after finding out dozens of his old huntsman buddies were off screen murdered because of a secret war they knew nothing about, the reveal that Oz has been lying to his face for *decades* kinda resulted in a kaboom (which was also made bigger due to Qrow's massive self loathing issues now having every reason to resurface because well, the person who probably helped Qrow most with them just turned out to be a massive F%#king liar).
Honestly I sympathise with Oz a ton here too; he's scared and has been making a lot of very terrible decisions (the moment Salem managed to get into his head and convince him that no one would stay with him if they knew the truth was the second she won) but like. Given how often and horribly he's probably died to those he once trusted, Salem actively hurting him, the sheer despair he must've felt from the moment he found out Salem was unkillible...
Ahh dear. It's a glorious mess isn't it? XD Love that you can tell Oz isn't 'the villain' here though; he might've eventually ended up that way if he hadn't been exposed (thank you again Oscar for calling the old man out XD) but like, now he gets to see how Teams RWBY and JNPR fare when facing the idea everything they've done is pointless and doomed and well. He really needs that fresh perspective I think

Pardon my french...but i fucking love Salem...Paladins did a crossover patch that incorporated RWBY Characters into their Game, and I have the Salem Skin for my favorite Support Healer, Seris.
That is THE definition of cognitive dissonance, Salem is the OPPOSITE of a healer.

I love how much this reveal recontextualizes things that happened earlier in the show. It makes you wonder: did Raven find out the truth about Salem on her own and that's why she turned on Ozpin? probably. Was he gonna fill Pyrrha in on everything or leave her in the dark even though being a maiden would have put a huge target on her back? Either way not telling her all this BEFORE she makes a life altering decision is icky.
And i love how it makes perfect sense and is totally understandable WHY Oz doesn't tell anybody about this, but it still doesn't take away from it being a selfish choice that people have a right to be mad over. There's no real "bad guy" here which is why the FNDM still has debates about it to this day. I'm team "people should make informed decisions about whether or not to Fight the Good Fight" but i still don't think Ozpin is a bad person for his choices.

- Qrow (and presumably the rest of Team STRQ) was aware that Salem is 'immortal' at least in that age has no hold on her. but Grimm are 'immortal' too, that isn't the same as unkillable. Actually, judging by the end of that first Ozma/Salem battle (where their kids died), it looks like Salem was 'killed' only to reform.

- the reasons Salem gave are the motivations of her followers. Hazel by love of his sister, Tyrian by reverence for Salem as his goddess, Watts by revenge for a slighted ego, Cinder by desire for power.

A great setup episode for the rest of the volume, and really the next few volumes. Love the Ruby love, she is amazing, we all know it and see it. Qrow's brutal line, for a man whose whole life has been bad luck, to be the worst of it is... well... indescribable. Volume 3, Qrow always had Ozpin's back, always chastised Ironwood. Was always away on another mission for him. If you disappoint your most loyal follower, someone you essentially guided through adulthood, that's gonna make you want to run away. But that speaks to his good, that he can disappoint himself too. Because Salem would never blame herself. It's always others at fault, and she designs it to be that way. Excited!!!

18:00, no, that's Cynder. Salem we saw, was the duaghter of Royalty and then she became totally dependent on Ozma because he WAS the only thing in her world. Then that was taken from her and the Brothers REFUSED, not that they couldn't, refused to bring him back.
The Brothers weren’t wrong in that regard, Salem was. Ozma dying of natural causes was regrettable, but again, a natural if unfortunate part of life. They were under no obligations to bring him back to life, and Salem had no right to demand such of them.
Hazel treats Emerald like an adopted daughter.
I think Oz has been at a stalemate with Salem for a long time and he knows how to maintain that. But he doesn't know how to defeat her.
The god of darkness wiped out humanity because they followed Salem and attacked. It wasn't just about teaching her a lesson.
It's only really Tyrian who worships Salem. It has nothing to do with her "need" for affirmation and everything to do with how chaotic-evil he is. The others are respectful because Salem is so powerful.
Salem is in the process of obliterating that stalemate, and Oz is clueless in how to stop it.

In ozpin defense he was betrayed a lot when he told secret to other's and i understand why they are mad because salem is immortal and can't be killed but he should had a better plan
I felt so bad for Oz by this point and the team's reaction initially surprised me, but one has to remember they've lost friends & classmates in this war already, and Yang lost an arm. Even Qrow despairs that all his efforts have been in vain. Like Ozpin already said: "It's all my fault. I've made more mistakes than every man, woman and child on this planet."
Oh, the Next Two episodes are gonna get super interesting, and kinda scary.

Probably only option Oz ever considered was uniting humanity and then calling gods back to judge them. Not sure how much weight as human does Salem have though.

There is the phrase "Fake it til you make it". I don't think Ospin didn't have a plan before. In fact I think he had several. The problem lies with the question of "killing" an immortal - that being an impossibillity in and of itself.
If you deal with that problem for long enough, you might end up over focusing on one aspect of it - "killing" Salem in this case - and ignorant other options. And i think that is Ospin's problem. He is simply overloocking his other options.
Speeking of those: there is actually a lot of limitations on permanently defeeting Salem.
There is summoning the gods and asking them for help. Problem is that they would "judje" humanity and human kind is very much devided.
Ospin's current solution seems to be to simply stall for time and to keep the reliks hidden. (Good plan if there's a time limit, but there isn't...)
You could imprison Salem, some might sugest. I'd agree that that's a good idea but where do you put her? She's essencially the greatest distructive force after the god of darkness so a normal prison cell of any variaty is only gonna hold for so long.
Shootingstar her into the sun? Dust based engins can't reach space as their residual "magic" (if you can call it that) is ancered to the planet (acording to the lore).
Long story short: critisysing Ospin for not having a plan is shortsightednes. I meen, World you habe had a better idea?

You about to get into the 90s childhood videogame trauma arc and its so good and also so recreshing even to me cause i said "WHOO" at the moment despite mild spoilment in advance like three years ago cause its actually fucking terrifying regardless, potential childhood trauma just adds on just ask me.
Also yeah Yang acted completely in character and it super checks out because shes been kind of fucked over from all parties since birth. After all shes been through and asking Ozpin personally to promise that, whether he actually agrred to it or not, for someone who has lived nothing but lies and half truths that has to be fucking infuriating. Especially after you turn down your own mother thrice in a row who despite being a very hot fem Vergil enthusiast, turns out to be right in all her warnings on why following Ozpin is a death sentence. It makes you second guess everything on how hes constructed how he acts and if Raven betrayed him purely out of cowardice or if she betrayed him as a way to try and prolong the inevitable of her own daughter replacing her just to die sooner or later.
A lot of this brings into question of some people were bad and yeah. Quite a few were. Raven is pretty bad in many ways i wont lie but that last talk with Yang in V5 is one of its most actual well written genuine moments and it feels like it cause Yang doesnt even realize she gave up her last known shot to know and understand her mom until way after its too late and breaks down crying. Imagine all that fighting, wasted recovery arc, and suddenly a few warnings your deadbeat hot Vergil mom tells you about ozpin are not only true but turns out hes left you in the dark a lot. Yeah if anything Yang is or should be so emotionally derailed at this point im surprised she never had an opportunity at the protagonist role but im more surprised shes kept it together in general as long as she has.
This Episode, right here, is where Ruby's slide begins---that doesn't end until the horrible mess of mid-Vol.9. Now we'll be lucky if we ever get to see the end of it all.
The next episode We'll be amazing because a certain somebody is making a grand return.
If you revisit the recent events. Oz used questions before sealing the lamp but lamp reset meanwhile cuz it was so long. But it had 1 question used. And Raven kept saying stuff like “impossible war agains Salem” and “there is no beating Salem” and such and she ran away. So did the previous spring maiden that had access to the relic and also Leo who was in charge of the maiden and the school holding the relic. So it is quite possible these guys used the lamp and they knew and thats why they left Oz. While Qrow followed and so did the team Rwby. And they all believed Oz is this wise man that always has a plan. So hearing he is literally just stalling and has no plan is totally devastating
Well, things are very tense now, for all sides. But trust me, it’s only going to get worse. Especially in two episodes. You’ll see.
Maybe this is gonna end up being a big plot hole but with how many lives Ospin has lived u would think that hes hade plenty of opportunitys to ask the Jinn questions that could help him. The questions we se him ask. Where are the other artifacts, Whats there power and How can i defeat Salem are very good questions to ask the first time u talk to the Jinn. But your telling me he never summoned the Jinn again after waiting 100 years to ask another set of questions. Its only 3 questions every 100 years but he must have hade that lantern for so long that hes been able to ask that Jinn many questions over hes many lifetimes. I would have been so pissed if i was Ruby knowing that he hade the key to pretty mutch infinite knowledge over 100´s of years and he only bottered to ask 3 questions.
I often feel like Beth could ramble on for hours.. which is a good thing! ;D

The history of Oz indicates he was attempting to unify the world peacefully with the games and a unifying training system. That went to pieces so he's waiting for a better solution. Salem just desires an end to it all by recalling the gods in the middle of chaos. I suspect the gods are effecting an experimental program with the human psyche by arranging this "Devil" situation. It doesn't make much sense to me that this is all the result of arbitrary capriciousness.
I also believe the first Question was asked by Summer, Raven, and Leonardo. Their outcomes don't lend towards revealing the secrets to others.
I swear, Tyrian's so unhinged he's actually one of my favorite characters in the series. 😁

I don't understand why they all reacted like this, yeah, Ozma can't destroy Salem, she's immortal... The gods said that he needs to use the relics to summon them, not destroy her. Destroying her was never the main goal to begin with. So their mission remains the same. Get the rest of the relics, summon the gods, and humanity would be judged. The fact that they got all mad at Ozma for that is weird and kind of poor writing.
