How come good and book, for instance, are pronounced with a short vowel sound while food contains a long vowel sound? Is there a rule that governs the pronunciation of such words or not?

Being a South African is an advantage because we use British English here. Even though I learned English as a second additional language, it's much easier for me to correct some couple of mistakes I make when I speak as compared to someone who lives in a country where English isn't taught. With that being said, I'd encourage anyone who wanna learn this language to understand that pronunciation has got nothing to do with how words are written. The sooner you understand that, the better. Lastly, immerse yourself in this language if you wanna improve.
