Learning where the modes of the major scale come from is a waste of time IF you are not prepared to do the following…
Learn how and when to apply each mode over different chord progressions.
Many guitar players are taught what’s known as the ‘relative approach’ to understanding modes, which is essential to know as it clarifies exactly what is meant by ‘modes of the major scale’
However, these same guitarists often hit a wall when this is the only approach they are taught for learning and applying modes in their playing.
The approach they need to learn next is one that I teach in my Bulletproof Guitar Player courses. It’s called the ‘parallel approach’, which concerns looking at each mode as an independent scale and analysing its scale formula next to that of the major scale.
So, instead of only learning about the relative approach which teaches you that D dorian is the 2nd mode of C major, E phrygian is the 3rd mode of C major, so on and so forth, you are then able to compare them all using the same root note - for example, C dorian, C phrygian, C lydian.
The benefit of doing the above is that it allows you to hear the unique sound of each mode as you’re able to build them all from the same root note.
If you only take the relative approach of playing C ionian followed by D dorian then, E phrygian, F lydian, so on and so forth, then it’s likely that you’ll just hear them as if they were different positions of C major…
When you understand the scale construction of the mode i.e. the parallel approach, you’ll be able to figure out which notes will fit and/or clash with the notes in the chords that you’re playing over.
That’s exactly what this free UA-cam lesson is all about - we’re specifically taking a look at two of the major scale modes that have a predominantly minor tonality - dorian and aeolian.
I’ll be showing you how two different chord progressions and how to determine which mode - dorian or aeolian - is the best fit for each one.
In the bonus content for subscribers at bulletproofguitarplayer.com, you will find downloadable Guitar Pro & PDF TAB files for everything played in the UA-cam lesson plus SIX bonus licks - three for the dorian mode, three for aeolian, and you’ll also get access to the downloadable backing tracks.

Some might say this guy is doing the Lord's work. I've watched countless videos online about Modes, none even come close to the detail level of this guy and the ease of understanding.

You are absolutely right. I only got better as a guitar player after 20 years of goofing around and not learning any theory. During Covid, I decided to teach myself and a huge breakthrough was mixing of major and minor pentatonics and the various modes. Huge lightbulb moment and I am ten times the better player for this one dive into theory.

Incredible lesson Ross! One of the best lessons on Dorian vs Aeolian. If you can please do the same for the major modes (especially the Ionian vs Mixolydian) - this will be great!

Nice lesson. I cringe whenever someone says “modes are just the major scale started on a different note.” Dorian is fun. 2 shared notes between chords and you get the fun of both minor and Mixolydian along with Dominant arpeggio usage.

Hello, your videos are very good and practical. I've played guitar for over a decade and really made little progress until I started to really dig into music theory and set in place a practice routine. As far as scales do you recommend sticking with one key and fully learning and applying concepts explained in your video like the people's key G/EM? Where did you learn your music theory and how long until you felt like you had a good grasp on it?

ROSS, try to make a video lesson on playing the blues rock using different MODES. When yngwie malmsteen plays the blues he is using harmonic minor BLUES and phrygian dominant BLUES. You use the same top 100 blues licks but you convert the blues licks into MODES by focusing on the modes tendency tones and modes leading tones.

A Dorian is the same notes as G major scale only start on the second note of the G Major scale (which is an A note) & play from A to A & you have A Dorian mode. A Aeolian is the relative minor of C Major (the 6th note of the C major scale played from A to A) & are the same notes in the C Major scale only when played from A to A you get A aeolian or the A minor scale-
