Cited (especially by filmmakers) as one of the greatest films ever made, Fellini’s extravaganza - now restored - blends autobiography, fantasy, satire and self-critique.
Struggling with the follow-up to his recent hit, Guido (Mastroianni) - clearly Fellini’s alter ego - retreats into a realm of reminiscence, anxiety and fantasy that reflects his feelings about the film folk constantly pestering him and the women in his life: his wife (Aimée), his mistress (Milo) and his ideal actress (Cardinale). Gianni Di Venanzo’s striking black-and-white camerawork blends realist observation with an evocation of Guido’s inner dreamworld, Mastroianni invests the self-centred protagonist with charm and a degree of dignity, and Nino Rota’s score brings coherence to the freewheeling circus that is Guido’s chaotic routine. Creative block rarely resulted in such feverish invention.

Aside from being well-put together, these BFI trailers might be the few 1080p free excerpt some great films have on the internet. People really should be granted these 1080p glances at how good classic film looks.
TOO RIGHT
Amen 🙌🏼
So far I watched Michelangelo Antonioni La Notte … free !…. With sub titles on UA-cam
@@mordecaiesther3591 Whoa, a lot has changed since that comment (7 years ago). I believe you. I myself watched Abel Gance's NAPOLÉON (1927) in 1080p since. The classics are so undervalued today that not even the producers seem to care anymore... 😢
@@Daniel-Rosa. damn man you came back to respond to a UA-cam comment after 7 years the fact you even ended up seeing the comment and found it let alone reply to it is amazing to me think of how much your life probably changed in between these two comments
Groundbreaking in every level, beautiful and poetic, easily one of the greatest films I've seen!
I agree.
This film changed my life like no other.
Really? How exactly?
How so? I'd love to hear about it.
Me too
pls tell me ... are u actually a bean
How is thatt
Un grazie infinito a Federico Fellini e a Marcello Mastroianni🌹
Here we are... Again and again. From La Dolce vita to 8 ½ and the others and others...I'm even seeing in my dreams the Fellini.
Watch our brand NEW trailer for Federico Fellini's masterpiece 8½!
One of the best pictures ever made. And there is no question about it.

Onibaba is the best picture
Even if I hadn't fallen in love with this film at 17 and knew nothing about it, this trailer would make me want to see this.
Greatest Fellini film, and probably my favorite. Beautiful edit on this trailer. Can't wait to watch the restored version!!
Are you still alive
My favorite film as of recently. Such a masterpiece!
I don't like the film. 8 1/2 is about the struggles and complexities of the creative process, and the search for meaning in life. The film explores themes such as:The creative process Me: I understand but don't remember any creativity, but it was a Struggle to watch this movie.
The technical and personal challenges artists face when expected to deliver something profound while also dealing with their personal relationships and public scrutiny . Me: I see that in the film.
Personal confusion
The search for meaning, purpose, and understanding, intertwined with memories of the past I guess I see but the film was boring.
Modernization
The alienating effects of modernization Me: Sure that is so obvious! Actually I have no idea how any scenes would portray that. But was bored and didn't pay as much attention as I could have.
Guilt
A life marked by untruths, such as when Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni), a successful Italian filmmaker, compromises his deal with his producers and has an affair with his mistress, Carla (Sandra Milo), while his wife, Luisa (Anouk Aimee), is also present Me: If i don't see guilt through remorse or crying or facial expression .. I have no idea of guilt and remorse, again due to my boredom of all Fellini and this is his best film. But sure when i read it I can figure that was a theme
Self-reflexivity ( no idea what this pretentious term means and who cares?).
The film deals with its own creation, as Guido conducts screen tests for roles in the film he's a part of, similar to Fellini's own camera placement. Me: In a lesser director's hands, this would be called narcissistic but only the great Fellini can do it well?
No one could beat the beauty and the pure cuteness of "Saraghina" in movie history.
I've seen a few Fellini films and love them but I haven't yet got around to 8 1/2 thank you so much for allowing me to see it first in the cinema.
An ode to art and desire, long live the dance!
1:22 That is where the Pulp Fiction dance comes from Ladies and Gentlemen!
Watched this film for the first time the other day and literally wondered if that was the case lol.
What’s pulp fiction?
@@DanRustle It's a film by Quentin Tarantino from 1994. In the film, Uma Therman's character and John Travolta's character dance almost exactly like the clip at 1:22.
Just, wow. This is such a great movie. Now I need to watch it again.
a velvet underground fan that likes 8 1/2!!
pure surrealist cinema ...
(do not try to find a plot)
great BFI release in HD
One of the best movies of all time ❤️🔥
what's with the yellowish tinge?
Love letter for cinema by No other than Fellini!
haven't seen it in a long time. i remember it as a beautiful film about all the hub-bub around film making, and a director who is paralyzed by his own freedom.
So succinctly put!
Bellissima Claudia Cardinale ! ❤️ One of the most beautiful women ever.
Il piu straordinario e originale film che sia mai stato girato.
Masterpiece
My favourite one of his.
il film più bello della storia
Ci puoi giurare

Amaazing trailer!
THE best film of all times!
Hmmm. This looks very inspiring. I might write an album...
Just bought the recently remastered bluray.......is this the same restoration or another new one
Splendido.
Italian cinema one of the finest sensibilities in all of early cinema content creations, abstract , absurd with so much conviction that audience attention gets absorbed even in suspension of disbelief, so was french cinema these two Nations dominated in Europeon cinema
early cinema ? This is the 1960's, not the late 19th century
Seems good. Haven't seen it yet
Not my favorite fellini (which is La Dolce Vita), but great regardless. It's just wonderful, delightful and magical
tell me you guys are going to do more fellini films soon? especially la dolce vita
gsian187 you got your wish
Great
Please tell us!
I had 2 see this film 3 times just to understand it..remember in the world of Star Wars & Titanic (which by d way has faded way as a movie over d yrs, except for Leonardo himself who shines everyday !!), its hard 2 understand such a movie..
And then i had 2 watch it 5 more times 2 appreciate it..
Given your use of grammar, it is no surprise you incurred such difficulty in grasping the concepts of the film. Our society saddens me.
un bianco abbagliante ha questo film
Гениально
In today’s society I feel guilty for loving this film!😂
Perché?

BFI When is this coming to Blu Ray?
+IM863 It's been out for Blu Ray for a while. Look for it in the Criterion Collection.
I did, thanks. Thought this was a new transfer from the bluray.

As someone who only speaks and understands English fluently, I am appalled how the English dubbed version is not made available.
I first came across "8 1/2" at my local video shop around 1996. It was a well worn VHS copy from the 1970's that I managed to rent some 20 times before it was taken off the shelf and shipped to some storage facility on the east coast around 1998. Before that, I was excited to purchase a new Critereon copy fully expecting it to be in English. It was in Italian with English subtitles, I took it back for a refund. Now usually I don't mind films with subtitles but the English dubbed version (supervised by Fellini himself) is vastly superior to the subtitled version. I say this because there are scenes with background conversations that are totally lost and some of the translations are different and not in a good way. I even went to see it on the big screen at a local repetory theater around the same time but no, it was the subtitled version. When Critereon came out with the DVD I immediately bought it, hoping the English dub would be available, but again no.
I have done my homework; the film was shot without sound (as was the practice in postwar Italy) and subsequently dubbed in Italian, English, French, and German. I have seen the English version posted on UA-cam before only to see it taken down, citing copyright infringement. Is there a conspiricy to keep the English version unavailable? I would fully expect a company like Critereon to at least make it an option for DVD. The funny thing is, if you look for it, there is nobody even talking about the English version.
The reason I'm making a big deal about this is because it's my all time favorite movie, but if I had seen the Italian/English subtitled version first, I don't know if that would be the case because there is so much subtlety lost watching it in another language. Thoughts... ?
I see your point of view, but though here in Italy they usually make a good job dubbing foreign films, now that in cinemas we can often see both versions I can tell you that I prefer watching a beautiful film in its original language with subtitles. Many things simply can’t be translated and I’d miss them, such as the actors’ real voices.
This movie makes Plan Nine from Outer Space look like Ben Hur.

I've seen it quite a few times but to be honest It's not a film I personally like. Much prefer La Dolce Vita.
This film redefined self-indulgence and for that reason has proved influential in an era were the promotion of self has become a social norm. It was curious to note the number of "pop" videos influenced by the movie. Other than that the movie contained little value.Europe needs a cinema to investigate its own cultural, moral and demographic disintegration but is unwilling to address those themes. To quote the Scottish philosopher Alisdair MacIntyre: "Europe needs another Benedict". One will emerge but I suspect not in my lifetime.
very interesting. When do you think it will emerge ?
Well ain’t that a review from high up on a ledge!
i hate this movie.
i whatxed it it sucks
This film is so incredibly boring
:O
True
Is it? I was going to watch it tonight at my condo theater, it would be difficult and embarrassing to leave in the middle of the show. 😂
It is not the most accessible film for sure, it's one that I think takes multiple viewings to fully appreciate. Nonetheless, even if you find it slightly boring, the beauty of the shots and the way it functions in general is absolutely worth seeing.@@lupebutterfly9161
Only boring people get bored.
what a crap movie
😁
Your taste is crap dear sir, your taste, not the movie. Remember and think about it. Your. Taste. Is. Crap.
he spoke the truth but they didnt listen
Tbh la dolca vita is waaaay superior, this film is a bit overrated
@@o.l4890 it isnt, it's a personal movie, if you're not a artist of any kind then this movie is not for you.
rubbish.
